Quỳnh follows the line of her hand, looking for something, for anything, to tell her what Nile could be seeing. She sees the flicker of something at the corner of her eyes, the grey of impure steel and the inky blue-black of the deep sea where Quỳnh used to fish with her family.
The glimpse of pale skin that Quỳnh can see is less surprising for the shade and more for the lack of blood on those high cheekbones. The crown that Quỳnh manages to see is dark and spiked, glimmering menacingly, as though it were a predator waiting to ambush an unsuspecting hunter.
The woman’s eyes are intent as she looks straight across the battlefield, straight to Nile. Quỳnh moves to pull her sword, watching the woman’s gaze slide to her, staring intently. Her hand lets go of the blade, struck by the face that has haunted her dreams for years since childhood.

Self-rec! Mythology is one of my favorite things ever and to translate that into this fic was an absolute joy and a labor of love. I’m most proud of how Quynh comes to change her mind as well as showing Andy finding joy in her life again. I wrote an Orpheus/Eurydice twist on a Joe/Nicky fic and knew that I wanted to write a Hades/Persephone take on AndromaQuynh.

I’ve read your fic, so let me tell you and everyone about how much i loved it because is definitely one of my favs:
The mythology is so good developed and the characters so well written! Adventure, brave and soft Quynh. Andy as the guide of the underworld, iconic! A soft guide with a big heart, tired of being alone and carrying the mounrning of humanity. All the complexity of having that role! Quynh reminding Andy how to enjoy life again and how kind she can be in her role. All the soft andromaquynh moments. How they find a way to be together. How you write their points of view, their feelings and thoughts! Amazing! Great supporting characters with actually good storylines: Lykon and Celeste!! I love everything about them in this fic, such a good characterization. And their friendship with Andy is beautiful. And Nile, Sebastian, Joe & Nicky!! Also Quynh’s and Nile’s friendship ♥
And the art is beautiful!! So much talent!

Fic Recs!
So I realised today that I don’t think I’ve ever done a fic rec list, SO. Here we are. (Apologies if I haven’t tagged anyone I should have, I’m lazy). These are some of my all time favourite fics that I’ve read in The Old Guard and adjacent fandoms, arranged by completely arbitrary categories.
Fluff and Crack: Posterior Motives, by @boutiquetraveltravelboutique. Those who know me know I’m a connoisseur of smut and crack (or smack as the youths say), and boy does this deliver. This fic is all about Joe getting absolutely sidetracked by Nicky’s ass, and Nicky getting distracted in return, and is written in the 5+1 format which makes it perfect for reading in sections throughout the day when you should be working.
So Much Sex: Tales Of A Tavern Wench, by Imoshen. This is like a pick-and-mix of smut. You’ve got 10 chapters of Joe and Nicky getting it on in different ways and each one hits the spot perfectly. Maybe I have a thing for piercings in my smut, what of it.
Supernatural: Crimson Moon, by @catholicnicky. Do you want a beautifully long fic with multiple pairings and plenty of delicious smut? I do. This was one of those fics where I would straight up devour the chapters as soon as they were released, even if sometimes that meant staying up way past lights out to do. It has everything: plot, sex, and Nile’s grandma roasting Booker.
Multi Pairing: Geborgen, by @bewires. I’m such a sucker for a good Booker/Nile dynamic, and so having this particular entry in the pumpkin gnocchi verse deliver so fully on that front was a dream. Ofc the sex is wonderful, as usual, but the plot, man. I was hooked.
Nile/Celeste: who needs sleep, by @mieraspeller. Ok as much as I’m a sucker for Booker/Nile I’m also such a slut for Celeste/Nile. A bitch can be both. This fic is just so cute and charming and honestly, if I didn’t already love this pairing I would have been sold on this fic alone.
Andy/Quynh: Wandering Hands, by strangehighs. I actually only just found this one today whilst searching for another Andromaquynh fic (RIP to that one, I’ll rec you when I find you), and it’s another perfect example of how fun and fluff and smut can blend together so well. Short and sweet and sexy.
Kenzarelli: can’t win without a few punches, by @oldmagpie. I hadn’t really considered Mickey/Majid as a pairing before reading Magpie’s works, and this sold me. Historical sex, what more can I say.
The Richardverse: “Hi, my name is Joe,” by @kiaya. I know my Richard fics have been horrific and amusing in numerous measures, but did you know there’s more in the Richardverse? I may be biased because Kiaya wrote this for me, but it’s truly perfect. Richard steps in to cover for Joe on a first date with Nicky, and ofc tries to keep Nicky there until Joe can reach them, but has to not be so charming so that Nicky falls for him. Pure Richardness.

almost a thing that my heart could endure SWEEPS with 734 kudos! honestly i am going to use this opportunity to say thank you all, i never imagined that this fic would be as successful as it was, and i am so pleased and so touched that this fic has resonated so deeply with so many people. i am used to being a fandom and internet nobody so when i wrote this it was quite a shock!

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? i always do!! it often takes me some time, i currently am working thru comments i got half a YEAR ago, but i genuinely love getting comments and my readers are so awesome, i have learned so much from them about so many things! i also try to note in the fic notes if there’s a particularly fruitful discussion in the comments and give credit where credit is due to those who correct me.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? i’m gonna do a bit of a cop out for this one, but it’s actually my wip (i saw it all in a dream), i only have 1 chapter up rn but i’m steadily working on the rest!
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? i think i do love you so. is my happiest, usually my stuff is pretty open ended and bittersweet
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written? i do not write crossovers
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? once sort of….? it was a super weird comment bc it had a critique that didn’t make sense for the fic, so i responded to them and was like hi i think you’re in the wrong place and never heard back kskdjdjdjd
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind? i have but it is SO awkward for me and takes me forever, so the smut i’ve written has been like short paragraphs inside a larger fic
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i know of
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? no but i’ve thought about translating my own fics before
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? no but i have a fic idea that i have yet to work on that i think would be amazing with 2 writers
13. What’s your all time favorite ship? who knows not me
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? i have a DEARLY beloved fic that i started in like. 2012….? 2013 maybe? it’ll never be finished
15. What are your writing strengths? i think i’m good at writing dynamics between characters and found family stuff. i also am realizing more and more that i actually really love writing historical fic and fiction
16. What are your writing weaknesses? man some days i feel like genuinely everything is a weakness. dialogue is hard for me, plot and structure are challenging, keeping my writing lyrical but interesting technically in particular is REALLY difficult for me

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? oh boy buckle up SO i actually have very strong feelings about this but there is one (1) time that i would use words in another language in a fic and it is ONLY if the other people in the scene don’t know and wouldn’t understand that word. if the other characters understand the language, i might indicate that the language they’re speaking in has changed if that will help the story, but otherwise i would not change languages. this is because it does not add anything (in my opinion) can be inaccessible to people, and can in some cases contribute to othering and discrimination.
when i say this last part i am SPECIFICALLY thinking of when people use words for g-d that are in different languages. i will speak from my own experience here, some Jewish people who are speaking English will say Adonai or Hashem in conversation, but often, people just say G-d. and if you’re speaking another language, you would say the word for G-d in that language, so when i am speaking Spanish, i would say D-os. if you go out of your way to put the word for G-d in another language and keep everything else the same, you are taking the idea of G-d and making it ‘Other’. additionally, i have only EVER seen this happen with characters who are Jewish or Muslim, and because white Christian anglos massively dominate fandom spheres, when i see this in fic it makes me really uncomfortable. (also ok even if u are not Christian the vast majority of people in fandom have been socialized where Christianity and Christian ideas about G-d are the norm.) i have extremely strong feelings on this and u have now all been subjected to them whoops
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? doctor who!! i was 8 and i wrote a mini fic in a notebook my aunt gave me where i helped the doctor and rose solve a mystery. my parents still have the notebook
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to? ok i’m gonna blame @aphroditestummyrolls for this one, i have an idea for a Nagron fic that i haven’t actually started yet but am SUPER excited about

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? i think it was mamselle who said this question is like picking a favorite child and i absolutely agree. it’s like picking my favorite tattoo i love them all, even the bad ones. my favorite RECENT fic however is hips, which i wrote for Nile week and am very pleased with.

oh the most difficult question ever!! listen, i have to say at least four! Andromaquynh or Andy/Quynh, is so especial because oh my god they're immortal that's endless potential! and i don't think i'll ever write 101 one shots for another ship! Damie or Dani/Jamie, because maybe I only have two stories written for them but the love i feel for them is way too much, they are perfect, favorite characters too. Heistwives or Debbie/Lou, objectively i also wrote a lot for ocean's 8, they are the reason i started writing fanfiction! and they've lasted me a long time. plus there's also the ot3 i love. and a bonus mention for my current favorite Sameena! of Sam/Deena, because they are the only thing in my mind at the moment, except maybe for Sarah/Hannah

Okay so I genuinely started to write a The Old Guard x Hill House AU, like I had a full chapter ready I think and I was so excited about it, spooky, angsty, emotional. but then Fear Street took over my entire life. but! I love the idea and I have a full outline so I'm sure I'll write it at some point!! hopefully before the sequel comes out lol as soon as i can look past the problematic fandom again. but! one that i really don't think i'll finish, would be a tog x ocean's 8 AU, because i didn't feel as strongly about that one, didn't have an outline, technically didn't even start to write it, probably not going to happen

i genuinely have no idea what to answer, i swear

uhhh i don't know? if this counts, which i think it does because it definitely affects my writing, is that i have zero discipline. and i rather die than thoroughly proofread and edit everything i write...
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I was going to say I don't love it but then I remembered I've done it a couple of times! I think it's nice, but when it's not overdone, just a little thing here and there. in my case, i did short sentences on one shots, which meaning can be guessed or wasn't very important to the story, so that the reader doesn't have to stop reading to look up a translation, and then at the end include the translation. it's mostly about the feeling of it, to me
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Ocean's 8! and it was a 30k ot3 story because apparently i'm ambitious like that. and shortly after i started writing for the haunting of hill house!
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
Gunpowder Milkshake! I have an entire one shot already planned out but I haven't had the time :((( (fear street please let me live) and i have written for these fandoms/ships but not nearly enough!! so i'm also going to mention Dani/Jamie from bly manor and Dani/Grace from terminator dark fate. let's not overthink why i love so many ships that include a character named dani jgkhghk

I have many favorites but I'm going to be completely honest here and say that it's my heart (is like a haunted house) my Andromaquynh Ghost AU!

140,478 (that is. a lot of words.)

only one! which you can probably all guess but it's the old guard

tell him while i can (which was my first fic in this fandom and i'm pretty sure i've gotten a lot better at writing since then but. it still gets kudos every now and then which is nice)

i do try, but i'm... not very good at it. mostly because i get self conscious over the fact that i usually respond with the exact same thing each time because i can't ever think of what else to say. i do read them tho, and i'm not trying to ignore everyone i am just very bad at interacting with people
6. what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
i do write a lot of angst but it usually has a happy ending! that being said, it's probably disappear when i need you most (which is the second part in a series that does have a happy ending, but this fic on its own doesn't really)
7. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've ever written?
i have a tendency to turn media i enjoy into tog aus somehow (see: star wars au, lotr au, zelda au,) but i don't really write crossovers

yes! my actual first fic was a marvel thing that i co-wrote with a friend, and we also started writing a kaysanova crusades fic a little while ago just... didn't finish. it's a lot of fun tho!

i think you can all guess. but it's kaysanova (andromaquynh a very close runner up. zelda/link taking third place)

on my own, tog! i haven't been writing that long

it's currently not posted (or finished) but iron maiden joe is some of my best writing i think. in terms of fics i have posted, the lotr au joenicky fic, because i finally wrote a Romantic(tm) scene that didn't feel super awkward (to me at least), and correrai diretto al sole, because. baby nicky.

absolutely! sometimes it takes me a while and then i forget until it’s been a while but i do! i love comments!

since almost everything i write is not angst this is actually easy. without doubt it’s until the shadows fall (one of my earlier fics which i wrote for the librarians)
6. what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
i think i’m going to go with lover be good to me. as i said i don’t really do angst so this is a little harder. but if i go with look at where they started and look at where they are then definitely this one.

i haven’t posted any. or started any actually. but i plan them sometimes. i’m planning a leverage/old guard crossover that i will actually write and post sometime this year.

nope

me writing smut: this is terrible i’m never writing smut again
me several explicit fics later: huh. guess i write smut
what i do write is pretty vanilla. which has a lot to do with the above exchange with myself. it’s very difficult for me to write smut mostly from a logistical point of view. how to get these people from wanting to have sex to having sex in a way that’s sexy and fun!™

nope

hey @redbelles remember lenore? and girl!sirius? but no i’ve plotted fics that would be co-written but none that have gotten off the ground (to be clear while it would still be fun to do lenore, things happen. and i am not interested in girl!sirius anymore)
13. what’s your all-time favorite ship?
an impossible question. i go through phases. but i have to admit i do love the thing where one person looks at their s.o. like that’s my person/wife/etc and i love them so much. right now i’m mainly writing book of nile and immortal husbands.
14. what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
there are a couple that i started that are probably never going to get finished. most of what i have currently in progress in my docs i fully intend to finsih
15. what are your writing strengths?
humor. i think. and dialogue.
16. what are your writing weaknesses?
what is plot. i don’t know her. also it’s apparently become impossible for me to write anything under 15k? which is probably a me problem less than a reader problem
17. what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
so i’ve found myself throw in a couple words/phrases in languages i do speak and then what ends up happening is i have to shut off that part of my brain, because i’ll be ready to start writing the rest of the dialogue in that language. and i think without a better way to include translation it can detract from what’s going on. because you’ll have a bit of dialogue that you have to assume your readers don’t understand that would advance the plot but your readers don’t know what it means.
18. what was the first fandom you wrote for?
the librarians
19. what’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
this is maybe the hardest. i want to write and then actually post mckirk still. i haven’t really written andromaquynh yet but i want to. i would be down to write various ships, i just get in the groove of writing for specific ships in specific fandoms when i’m in the [insert fandom here] spiral.
20. what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
as i’ve been writing longer and been developing my skills i’ve gotten happier with my work over all. which isn’t to say i don’t like my older works. i do. but i like my most recent stuff best i think. no more complicated (than a kiss like this), the peaceful quiet you create for me, lover be good to me are probably my favorites. but it’s also kind of like asking you to pick a favorite kid you know?
