Summary: Not long after the fiasco with Merrick, the active members of the guard spend some downtime letting Andy recuperate from another mission during which she was injured. After a few thousand years of immortality, Andy doesn't have much patience for how long it takes to heal. Nicky, Joe, and Nile's attempts at keeping her off her feet and the injuries off her mind by playing a game are interrupted by a call from Booker that he better have a good reason to be making.

I went to Harv’s Island and made Andy’s cave. I’m a little sad that apparently means Andy can’t hold tools, like, y’know, the Axe.

we know that Nicky and Joe are soulmates, right? They kill each other and become inmortal, soulmate behavior, right? And of course they will loose their immortality together, my sanity depends on that.

But hear me out, all those things are related to death in some way, so here comes my sleep deprived mind, they were born the same day.

Yes, I know that Joe is three years older, but I'm not talking about about years, I'm talking about days. (and maybe stars)

The poetic way to say this: "The starts were in the same position when they were born, just three years apart."

And maybe this idiots talk about their birthdays but because the calendar difference (may content errors, don't think too much into this.) and because the bigger problem was not being able to die, they just thought nothing of it, and never celebrate their birthday in general, whatever reason suits you best.

Until, Nile ask for the day they were born, and they answer with their respective calendar system, she does some mathematics and, guess what? same day.

An Old Guard fic

Chapter 2!

Fic Summary: It was a lovely, calm morning between missions. Breakfast had been leisurely and delicious. The back door was open to just the screen, left that way even after Joe and Andy had come in from puttering around the garden, smelling like sunshine and good dirt. Breeze and birdsong filled the main room where everyone was sprawled in the most comfortable, least ergonomic ways they could find across various chairs, the couch, the floor, and the one table capable of bearing human weight.

Then there was a loud crack, more like a lightning strike than a gunshot, and there were suddenly twice as many people in the room—the six new arrivals falling directly into the laps of those already present.

The Guard as we know them suddenly have their downtime derailed by themselves from the past—specifically, from the day they each came back to life for the first time. For some, it's a chance to reconnect with their own histories, for others it's a difficult reminder of their mistakes, for all it's quagmire of language barriers and phantom growing pains they're just going to have to deal with for as long as the situation lasts.

Headcannon that when it was just Andy, Nicky, and Joe, the two were still learning eachother's language and Andy was basically their interpreter. One day they're sitting around a fire after fighting in a battle and Joe says, "We should have a name for ourselves. I was thinking... the old guard." Nicky looks at him confused and turns to Andy for her to repeat it back in Italian. After she tells Nicky the two pause and then burst out laughing at the idea of it. Every now and then Nicky will bring it up just to tease Joe.

But like, Booker & Nile as a dynamic duo is so sorely under appreciated.

I mean, first, you’ve got characters counting lifespan in terms of millennia. On the scale of things, he’s really not that much older than she is. They’re both pretty much still getting used to this whole immortality thing. Prime example being the subject of family. Booker & Nile are still ineffably tied to the concept of family as something you’re born into. It’s not that they’re incapable of viewing the rest of the team as family, it’s that there just hasn’t been enough time to heal the hurt of severing the bonds which they started with. Andy, Joe, Nicky, & even Quyhn at one point had that time together. Those scars were able to heal and the bonds to be reforged by the company of each other. It’s why losing Quyhn was like tearing them open anew, especially for Andy whose whole identity by that point was as tied to that bond as Booker’s was to his wife and children.

Which brings me to observation number two, and this is part of what makes rewatching this movie so much fun. Coming off a first run through, you’re left with this strong impression that everyone eventually find someone to pair off with (read platonically or romantically as desired). Joe and Nicky. Andy and Quyhn. I dare you to rewatch the dinner scene and not read Booker wondering if Nile was supposed to be his partner. I double dog dare you. Because seriously, everyone is definitely watching to see what she’ll do but Booker full on scans her. It is such a quick moment but that question is non-verbally pitched to be left hanging in the air.

And don’t even get me started about their conversation in the cave. I get that tact is not usually practiced with each other, but Nile literally showed up at their door like twelve hours ago. Everyone’s been forward when it comes to the truth, but they deliver it to her in digestible pieces. They give Nile a second to process. Except Booker who describes what a straight up nightmare immortality can be. And yet, we as the audience get absolutely everything we need in that exchange so as not to hate Booker’s guts by the end of the film. Because he doesn’t want Nile to hate him. Which she doesn’t.

Nile is such a cool protagonist because of her capacity to forgive. She puts together the logic behind Booker (and Copley’s) actions, clearly expresses anger at both of them, but also doesn’t let either man mope or self-sacrifice because of a selfish mistake. She gives them the opportunity to make amends. It’s great because she’s exactly the kind of partner someone like Booker needs. Someone who can truly empathize while still calling him out on his bullshit. Meanwhile, that same empathy can work in the opposite direction from Booker’s side. He still knows exactly what she’s experiencing in a way the others are simply too old to fully connect with anymore.

TL;DR let’s show some appreciation for all the team’s interpersonal relationships, including Booker and Nile’s

It’s undisputed that Nicky gives God-tier hugs, so let’s get into everyone’s first experience of this magic.

Joe: They’ve been traveling together for years, they smile, they joke, they share food, but Yusuf still feels the caution. Until Yusuf is captured by bandits and rescued by Nicolo, who pulls him into his arms as soon as the last enemy falls and Yusufs brain just goes “.....oooh”

Andy: She still can barely believe their luck, getting two new little brothers at the same time and both so friendly and fearsome at the same time. They tried to hide the fact they were lovers for a while till she came back from a hunt to see them all over each other. Yusuf laughed in joy at her easy acceptance, and Nicolo......Nicolo found her later and offered her the gentlest hug she’d experienced yet in her life. She’s never been maternal but this must be what it feels like.

Booker: He isn’t conscious enough to register where he is or who is holding him. He knows he’s no longer in the gutter he lost himself in after the funeral of his last son. The love is overwhelming but when he lashes out it’s too strong to be his wife, too unyielding to be his sons.....

Nile: Andy had insisted she learned to ride a horse and despite having no more affection for the animal then before, she could manage. As they re-united with Joe and Nicky, she could see Nicky’s beaming face as should was then subsumed in the warmest embrace. She feels so at home , and as Nicky let her go, Yusuf laughs at her stunned faced. “Yeah, my love has that effect”
