Thinking about the irony of Andy Berman being most famous for playing a paranormal detective who no one believes even though he's completely legit and then writing for a show about a detective with paranormal powers that everyone believes are legit when he's actually a total fraud.
I'm mulling over the fact that Dib (and Gaz?) were supposed to be clones, but focusing on Dib specifically, this idea opens up many questions and concepts. In the DVD extras, Andy Berman (voice actor of Dib) explains how Jhonen and crew planned to make an episode centering on Dib discovering why his life is such a mess- only to learn that he's a clone of his father. Did Professor Membrane also have some out of the norm interest he was obsessed with as a kid but suppressed for "real" science? Did he have a similar childhood? And it's explained as if him being a clone EXPLAINS why his life sucks. Dib being a clone kind of makes sense as Professor Membrane outright said that he was supposed to be the future of the Membrane empire- who else would be able to carry on its legacy than the man himself? And what's Gaz's purpose? Maybe an experiment to make a girl out of his own DNA? There's never any expectations put on her to be into "real" science- in fact her interest in video games are always encouraged. But back to Dib; He obviously is nothing like his father aside from having his intellect. He developed his own personality early on. Are there failed Dibs? Are there previous Dibs? Are there more Dibs? Many interesting ideas that could further connect him and his father despite how distant they currently are.
...AND THEN THEY RETCONNED IT BECAUSE THE EPISODE WAS NEVER PRODUCED. GRAAAHH
here’s a compilation of why rick berman of star trek fame could have ruined the franchise with his bigotry, thanks to @/thisismewhatevs on twitter:
- rick berman is usually cited by writers as the main reason gay characters were not allowed on screen in TNG/VOY/DS9/ENT even though gene roddenberry specifically wanted gay representation in the 1980s
- notably, he is responsible for demanding female actors be "sexed up" in various ways including jeri ryan's catsuit and padding terry farell's breasts
- when terry farell asked for a reduced contract similar to those of her male costars, she was fired, leading to the sudden death of jadzia dax
- with seven of nine's catsuit, not only was it berman's idea to make her "born sexy yesterday" her original costume pinched her neck so much she kept passing out. rather than change it, berman brought in nurses to administer oxygen between takes
- berman would continually comment on the appearance of female actors to the point that marina sirtis developed an eating disorder. sirtis also mentions how tight her corset and how large her breast padding was under her "uniform"
- berman was left in charge of trek because he was in the right place when roddenberry got sick. He had no experience with scifi previously and didn't really believe in roddenberry's vision of the future:
- In addition to being a dick to denise crosby after pushing her out, he's also the reason for wil wheaton was kicked out for similar contact negotiation as terry farrell
- harry kim was never promoted from ensign since berman hated his actor, garrett wang, according to him
- enterprise was a step backwards in a lot of ways because berman had far more creative control (seasons 1-3) and took a much more hands on writing role. here's t'pol actor jolene blalock discussing his sexualization of her
- as DS9 went on, garak and bashir spent less time together and garak was given zyial as an incredibly gross love interest because andy robinson's portrayal as queer coded made berman uncomfortable
- despite the "equality" promoted on the show, berman hired very few female writers, with less than 30% of episodes having even one female writer during his time
- “Rick Berman is not the only asshole to have worked on Star Trek and he is not the reason for every bad choice from TNG-ENT. However HE WAS the executive producers and show runner in charge of production so much of the sins of that time lie at his feet. When people get confused about how some people seem to "misunderstand" the point of Star Trek and don't know how they can watch/enjoy the "progressive" nature of the show and be such vile sexists and racists, this is how. They let a sexist asshole run the show for three decades. On screen representation is important. It's amazing for people to see themselves in such a hopeful future, but the behind the scenes matters just as much if not more than who is in front of the camera. Representation without responsible storytelling is a tragedy.“ -Deep Space Fine on twitter
this is not to say that TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT are bad shows, or that they shouldn’t be watched, or anything else; but that understanding why these awful choices were made behind the scenes in depicting a “progressive” future. rick berman didn’t agree with this future because he didn’t want others who weren’t white, cis, straight men like him to benefit in the ways he did.
an irken oc. just a cool visual. idk what their backstory would be

dibship rising has such a strange ending. always makes me feel super weird. it's so melancholic and almost sad, the way andy berman delivers his lines as the ship recounting dib's life. and then gir yells. great episode
We gotta talk about how Sid's face was so beautiful he literally altered the show's trajectory twice. Once, as we all know, when he made Andy insane the first time they met, and Andy was like, "yeah- Garak wants to obliterate that twink" and once when Rick Berman saw Sid acting when he was 25 and decided he needed to hire him on the spot. Like.... the power that man has.

legopsych A non-Lego post this week! Lego weirdly overlaps with a lot of other types of art and design more than you would expect it to, and I dabble in a bit in graphic design and various fiber arts as well, purely just for my own amusement. One of the things that I’ve started doing over the last couple years is designing merch for myself whenever I can’t just actually buy the thi
ng that I wish existed! I’ve made a couple of Psych T-shirt designs so far but I think this may be the one I’m most excited by and proud of! This is the logo for Phat Thai Jones - the Afro-Thai fusion restaurant from “Autopsy Turvy” where @andyberman24 appears as waiter Singh. (The tshirt is meant to be fake merch that you would buy at the restaurant itself if it were to exist.)
The logo appears only briefly as the camera pans over it in the episode and it appears at a funny angle and a bit blurred from the camera movement, so my only choice was to literally draw the whole thing by hand - all font/lettering included. I used Procreate to draw it and then screen printed it and this is basically my current favorite tee that I own.
I was so overly excited when I finished making it that I ended up sending tshirts to the one and only Singh himself - @andyberman24 - as well as his ever brilliant cowriter for the episode @jamesroday (who I think might have also been in the episode). They were both so incredibly kind in their response to receiving the tshirts and sent this amazing photo back! Thank you both so much (along with the always lovely @marikacahn ) for sending this, allowing me to post it, and for just sharing my enthusiasm over such a random silly project!!
Thinking about how Jhonen is a fan of Evangelion and the first time I heard Shinji's English dub voice I totally thought it was Andy Berman for a hot minute, and now I'm wondering if part of the reason Andy got the job voicing Dib is because he sounds like Spike Spencer.
what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?
I love using the block button to curate my Tumblr experience. Mostly it's used for porn bots and users whose posts say "ZADR DNI". If they don't block me first, I figure I'll just go ahead and do them a solid. Also, if you spam like dozens of my posts without even a single reblog to help share other people's hard work on their art, I'm gonna see it and stop that quick. :/ C'mon, people, it ain't hard to share art you love.
what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
I don't really pay attention to how fandom acts about anyone. If this was the case, I'd hate Zim and Dib, because my views on them are so far from how most of the fandom sees them.
you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
Nothing! I have no shame. I like what I like, and I don't have any problem announcing it.
common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
"Jhonen is such a prick, he's so mean to his fans, he hates us ZADR fans" - He's a troll. He's no Rebecca Sugar, but that's why I like him. He's gonna say shit that makes canon break or make fun of things he sees. But I sincerely DOUBT he takes it seriously. And that's what some people tend to do... take things waaay too seriously. I like a lil clownin' around, and I think the jab at @mybrainisbigpoop (for asking Andy Berman say "I love you, Zim!" in that iconic moment back at InvaderCON) in Enter the Florpus, where Dib says "NO!" to Clembrane asking if he loves Zim, is fucking hilarious.
