Ex Wive's Club, Chapter 26

“She’s an unfit mother, your honor,” Andy growled as he glared at his soon to be ex-wife, “she has postpartum and hasn’t been taking any medication for it since the birth of our second child. She had abandoned our first child for the first few years of his life and put our second child through dozens of needless and invasive tests!”
“Do you have proof of this, Mr. Barber?”
Andy frowned, unhappy that the judge wasn’t just taking his side, “Gary, you know-“
“Mr. Barber, I took the case because numerous other judges recused themselves on personal grounds. A lot of us know you and your wife, but I’m going to remind you that this is an impartial case where accusations have to have foundations,” the judge reminded him, “you as well as anyone should know that wild accusations only hurt those involved. So unless you have physical proof-“
“After she gave birth to our son, she moved to Massachusetts to go to MIT!”
“Your evidence is that your wife went to school?”
Andy’s frown deepened, “Gary-“
“Mr. Barber…I will not remind you again.”
He huffed before standing beside his desk, “your honor. My wife and I were engaged when my son was born. She returned the ring to me and left. I then proceeded to see someone else. Someone who I was engaged to after her, who was going to legally adopt my son as Sasha was in the process of giving up all parental rights for him.”
“And was this process ever completed?” the judge asked, “Was the paperwork ever filed with the courts?”
Andy’s jaw twitched, and he shook his head, “no your honor.”
“Then where is your proof that she abandoned your son?” he asked, “because to me, it’s a mother who wanted to further her education. The two of you ended her relationship, but it just sounds like an undocumented agreement where you had sole custody of your son during that time.”
“She’s been diagnosed with postpartum. She was on medication after our son was born.”
“As many women are.”
Andy was quickly losing his patience with the judge.
He’d half expected the judge to make a personal decision and give Andy the sole custody of the kids.
And while his more logical side had known that wasn’t going to happen, it was a hope that he’d kept in the back of his mind, nonetheless.
“Mrs. Barber?”
Sasha stood nervously at her lawyer’s insistence, “Yes your honor?”
“Do you have any reason to think why your husband is making these accusations of you abandoning your children and putting them through needless medical procedures?”
“He believes I was cheating on him, your honor,” she admitted softly, “he kicked me out of our shared home, and-“
“He kicked you out?” he asked, brow raised as he looked at Andy. Judge Gary Tellman had known Andy for most of his career. So much so that Andy had considered him a friend before their court date began. He knew that Sasha didn’t have a job, as Andy had insisted she be a stay at home mother. And as the proceedings continued, Andy had begun to feel that maybe that was the issue. Maybe the fact that his friend knew their marital life, and wasn’t instantly siding with him, it was an issue.
“Your honor, she was cheating on me.”
“I was attending a support group for parents coping with their feelings,” she argued, glaring at her husband, “you had someone follow me and-“
“AND HE KISSED YOU!”
“I PUSHED HIM AWAY!”
“IS THAT WHY HE’S HERE NOW?” Andy screamed at his wife, “is that why the man you’re fucking is sitting behind th-“
“ORDER!” the judge commanded, banging his gavel, “I will have order in my courtroom!”
Both Andy and Sasha quieted themselves and sat down while the judge tried to get the situation back on track.
“I want the two of you to listen and listen right now. Whatever is going on is between you two. I understand that divorces and custody hearings are difficult, but this is what happens. You will not scream at each other in my court room. Is that understood?”
“Yes your honor.”
“Yes.”
“Now…Mrs. Barber. Is the man that your husband is referring to in this room?”
“He is, your honor?”
“And why is he here?”
“Because when Andy threw my stuff out, he was the one that picked me up,” she informed him, “Curtis was the one that let me stay with him. I babysat his daughter in exchange for the roof over my head.”
“And you didn’t have anyone else you could stay with?”
“My father is going through some of his own issues at the current point in time with his own wife,” she admitted, “he had some other things to deal with. And as he reminded me. I am an adult, and I needed to forge my own path.”
“And these needless medical procedures you put your children through?”
“They weren’t needless,” she said with a shake of her head, “Ashley has a heart defect. An arrhythmia. I thought she stopped breathing one night, and I brought her to the doctors. Clearly, they agreed with me, as they believed something serious could be wrong. She was born with it. Through the tests we found out that she can’t be treated like other children. No contact sports. No harsh physical activities…because that can cause the arrhythmia. Which can cause her heart to stop.”
“So they were necessary.”
“Yes your honor!”
“Very well…”
“Your honor…I’d like to address Mr. Barber’s own parental history as part of the record,” Sasha’s lawyer began, standing up, “it is of my knowledge that Mr. Barber had an incident on father’s day with his children where authorities were involved. I believe that we need to examine that.”
“What?” Sasha asked, her own eyes wide at what she’d heard, “Wh-what are you talking about?”
“You weren’t aware of the incident at your home with your husband and children, Mrs. Barber?”
“No….a-are they okay?” she asked quickly, “What happened? Andy?”
“It’s none of your business, Sasha!”
“They’re my children!”
“Mr. Barber, you had another pull custody from your wife last year,” the judge said firmly, “am I to believe that your wife had no knowledge of what happened on father’s day a few months ago?”
Andy’s jaw tightened, “she’s not part of it, your honor!”
He looked to Sasha and her lawyer, “Proceed with your evidence.”
“On father’s day, Mr. Barber had an altercation with his then 11 year old son and 6 year old daughter where they discussed Mrs. Barber’s living arrangements. The children were upset after not having seen their mother for a matter of months. After the six year old spilled her juice, Mr. Barber struck his son. There are bruises from abuse that the doctors at the hospital can place as early as two months after she was removed from the home. The eleven year old spun into the table and landed in the broken glass. The six year old called the police and retrieved the gun from Mr. Barber’s gun safe, believing that her brother was going to be harmed. When police showed up, Mr. Barber was arrested. The children were taken to a hospital where they were examined. The eleven year old suffered internal trauma and had bleeding which had to be repaired surgically. The six year old would have suffered a heart attack had the pace maker not shocked her heart back into a sinus rhythm thanks to the previous mentions to necessary medical care provided by the mother in the past.”
Sasha’s throat went dry as she listened to what her lawyer had just said.
She hadn’t been aware of anything going on.
She’d been so lost in her little life with Curtis that she tried to p ush the fact that she was without her children to the back of her mind.
“Andy?”
He only glared at his wife, “they’re exaggerating. Little brats learned it from you!”
Her stomach sank as the tears rolled down her cheeks.
She had abandoned her babies.
She’d left them with someone who she thought they would be safe with only for him to turn out to be a monster.
“My-my children?” she asked, on the brink of sobbing, “wh-where are my children?”
“They’ve been under the care of a Jake and Maddison Jenson since the time of the incident,” her lawyer said firmly, reading from the file, “in that time, Mr. Barber hasn’t been allowed visitation as suggested from the original hearing.”
“Why wasn’t Mrs. Barber contacted?” the judge asked.
“It looked like Mr. Barber used his connections to ensure that the children would go to a family friend instead of foster care, and the case is sealed under Judge DiMattio!” her lawyer answered, “I had to fight with the courthouse to get these documents and statements alone, but Mr. Jensen has been extremely helpful in the case. The Jensen family attempted to contact Mrs. Barber, but her phone had been turned off months prior by Mr. Barber. She was unreachable. The Jensens are outside the court room, sitting with a bailiff and the children.”
The judge shook his head, the disgust in his face obvious, “I think I’ve heard all that I needed to hear. I’m going to make my decision.”
“Your honor-“
“I have decided in favor of Mrs. Barber,” the judge answered shortly, “Mr. Barber has provided no proof of wrong-doing when it comes to the parental rights of Mrs. Barber, and while he, himself has utilized the system to favor him, I believe that was a gross instance of misconduct, which I plan on bringing up and filing a complaint. Mr. Barber. I’m going to let you know right now, you are on thin ice, which is about to break. You’re going to be brought into police custody for the misuse of power and what seems like a partial decision and treatment based on your friendship with certain people.”
“This is lud-“
“Ballif, take Mr. Barber away!” the judge ordered as he banged his gavel, “Mrs. Barber…your children are outside this room…they are now in your sole custody, with no visitation rights for Mr. Barber. I’m sorry that justice has taken you this long to acquire!”

Adott egy sajátos fantazmagória egy olyan világról, melyben angyalok, démonok és lovecrafti lények vívnak egymással végtelennek tűnő harcokat mágikus eszközökért, hatalomért, az univerzum birtoklásáért. Ez elsőre izgalmasnak hangzik, de egy kicsit alaposabban utána járva az a számomra már röhelyes megközelítés ugrott be, amikor a képregényrajzolóknak sem jut eszébe semmi különleges, ezért mindenkit összeeresztenek mindenkivel, végtelen dimenzióban és variációban. Ugyanez a helyzet a hamarosan debütáló DiGelsomnia nevű projekt témavilágával és zenei teljesítményével, értékével is: papíron kifejezetten nyálcsorgatónak hangzik, a végeredmény azomban finoman szólva kiábrándító. Nézzük, miről is van szó.
Magát a kiadványt összehozó Andy DiGelsomnia is egy érdekes figura, mivel az ezredforduló környékén antiszemitizmustól sem mentes thrash metal demókkal szórakoztatta nagy eséllyel saját magát, majd a semmiből 2010-ben kiadott Lyraka néven egy egészen különös anyagot, amelyben a 70-es évek végének hard rockja és az NWOBHM keveredett klasszikus zenei megoldásokkal. Rengeteg vendég és zenész tűnt fel a Vol.1 címmel ellátott korongon, ami a kissé erőltetett retró hangulat mellett azért nem mondható rossznak.
Ez önmagában még nem hangzik csábítónak, de ha hozzávesszük az új projekthez csatlakozó Robert Lowe énekest (Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Tyrant), akkor már rögtön kíváncsibbak lehetünk a végeredményre. Sajnos az általam igencsak kedvelt dalnok az utóbbi évtizedben látványos mélyrepülésben van azokkal a kiadványokkal kapcsolatban, amikhez a nevét adja és nem kivétel ez alól a DiGelsomnia sem. A törekvés egy fantasy tematikájú, Saint Vitus, Black Sabbath, Rainbow által inspirált epikus heavy/doom lemez létrehozására egyértelmű, de a végeredmény vérszegény és sokkal inkább hat amatőrnek, kezdetlegesnek, mint tisztelgésnek a nagy nevek előtt.
Lowe mentségére legyen, hogy ennek az albumnak a gyors elfelejtése és feleslegessége nem az ő teljesítményéhez kötődik, mivel becsülettel és a tőle megszokott érzelemgazdagsággal tolja végig a közel 44 perces dalcsokrot, aminek 7 tételének játékidejére tekintve szintén valami felemelő doomot várhatnánk. A valóság azonban az, hogy sablonos riffek és váltások sokaságával találjuk magunkat szembe, amit egy teljesen erőtlen, hozzá nem illő hangzás tesz még élvezhetetlenebbé. Dallamok terén sem kell számítanunk különösebb refrénekre, nagy pillanatokra, mivel a játékidő nagy részét a várakozás érzésével kell eltöltenünk. Ott az ígéret, hogy érkezik valami felemelő és emlékezetes, de ezek soha nem jutnak el hozzánk. Viszont találkozhatunk oda nem illő zongorabetéttel, feleslegesen eltorzított vokállal. Ami működik itt-ott, az maga a doom, de ezek a részek mind ismerősen csengenek más lemezekről.

A Sic Itur Ad Astra még így is lehetne vállalható stílusgyakorlat, de van még valami, ami még a hallgatását is megnehezítette, ez pedig az album már említett gyenge hangzása. Session zenésznek megadták Andre Maquera (gitár), Thom Carvey (basszus) és Gary Spaulding (dobok) nevét, de első nekifutásra esküdni mertem volna, hogy itt programozott dolgokkal is kozmetikáztak rendesen. Különösen a dob az, ami teljesen tompán és idegesítő módon puffog bele a fülünkbe érthetetlen módon. A hangszerek szárazak és élettelenek, pedig időnként elég komoly gyomrost is be tudnának vinni. Külön érdemes megemlíteni DiGelsomnia néha már hirtelen felindulásból elkövetettnek tűnő gitárszólóit, amelyek tudnak dögösek és hatásosak lenni, de a legtöbb esetben leginkább véletlenszerűen bedobáltnak, randomnak tűnnek.
A lemez meghallgatását azoknak ajánlom, akik arra kíváncsiak, hogy Robert Lowe milyen formában van manapság, egyébként érdemes leadni az elvárásokból, mert jó indulattal középszerű. Érződik, hogy mit akartak kihozni belőle és milyen célok vezérelték, de ez akkor is kevés.

Es war 1981 eine kleine Sensation, als das Depeche-Mode-Debütalbum „Speak & Spell“ veröffentlicht wurde. So einen Synthie-Sound hatte man auf diese Weise auf den Punkt gebracht noch nie gehört.
Klar, da hatte es vorher schon Gary Numan gegeben, auch Human League, natürlich Kraftwerk, und doch waren die Songs auf „Speak & Spell“ lupenreiner, songbasierter Synthie-Pop: leicht, griffig, voller Hooks und zwingenden Keyboards und Drummachines.
Mit dabei an den Synthesizern und auch als Begleitsänger: Der jetzt im Alter von 60 Jahren verstorbene, 1961 in Nottingham geborene Andrew John Fletcher, später nur noch kurz „Fletch“ genannt.
Fletcher ging zusammen mit Vince Clark zur Schule und gründete mit diesem die Gruppe No Romance in China, danach eine weitere Band und schließlich mit Dave Gahan und Martin Gore Depeche Mode, eben jene Band, die auch vierzig Jahre später noch Stadien füllt. Und wer war noch einmal Vince Clark? Genau: Der ist die entscheidende Figur hinter „Speak & Spell“ gewesen. Clark schrieb und komponierte einen Großteil der Songs, blieb aber nur für dieses eine Album dabei, um den Ursprungssound von Depeche Mode mit Projekten wie Yazoo und Erasure zu perfektionieren. In der Folge sollten Gahan und Gore die Geschicke von Depeche Mode hauptsächlich bestimmen. Doch Fletcher war derjenige, der den Laden immer wieder zusammenhielt, insbesondere nachdem das zwischenzeitliche Bandmitglied Alan Wilder Depeche Mode verlassen hatte.
Obwohl Andy Fletcher selbst keine Songs schrieb, war er für die Bandchemie ungemein wichtig, gerade um zwischen den beiden immer größer werdenden Egos von Gore und Gahan zu vermitteln. Dazu kam, dass Fletcher bodenständig und in England blieb und seine beiden Bandkumpel der Liebe wegen in die Staaten zogen. Was die Beziehung und die Kommunikation zwischen den Musikern nicht leichter werden ließ.
Wie schrieben es Dave Gahan und Martin Gore, als sie den Tod ihres Keyboarders in den sozialen Medien vermeldeten: „Fletch hatte ein wahres Herz aus Gold und war immer da, wenn man Unterstützung, ein lebhaftes Gespräch, ein gutes Lachen oder ein kühles Bier brauchte. Unser Herz ist bei seiner Familie und wir bitten Sie, in dieser schwierigen Zeit an sie zu denken und ihre Privatsphäre zu respektieren.“
Unbekannt ist, woran Andrew Fletcher verstorben ist, und auch, ob Gore und Gahan von einer möglichen lebensgefährlichen Erkrankung ihres Kollegen wussten. Denn es stellt sich natürlich nun auch die Frage, wie es mit Depeche Mode weitergeht, gerade weil Fletcher so unverzichtbar für das Wesen dieser Band gewesen ist. Ob sie sich ein Vorbild an den Rolling Stones nehmen, die trotz des Todes von Charlie Watts weiter auf Tour sind? Oder lassen Gore und Gahan, der in den letzten Jahren immer mal wieder Soloalben veröffentlichte, es jetzt sein? Schade wäre es, denn live sind Depeche Mode, ähnlich wie die Stones, weiterhin eine Klasse für sich.

The Cribs veröffentlichen das Video zu "Never Thought I’d Feel Again", der neuesten Single aus dem kommenden achten Album "Night Network", das am 13.11. über Sonic Blew / [PIAS] erscheint!
Die drei Jarman-Brüder - Gary, Ryan und Ross - transportieren mit dem neuen Song energiegeladene Nostalgie in Form von feinstem Indie-Rock, und erinnern sich dabei an vergessene Gefühle, von denen sie gar nicht wussten, dass es sie eigentlich noch gibt. "We were talking about how a song like "The Locomotion" is probably about as perfect a pop song as you can get - it's so immediate and catchy, without any hang-ups or self consciousness", erzählen die Drei. "That's what we were trying to do here - just be totally unabashed and heart on sleeve, no punk guilt, no baggage - just pure energy."

Das Video, das wie den vorangegangenen Auskopplungen “Running Into You” und “I Don’t Know Who I Am” erneut gemeinsam mit Andy Knowles und Nick Scott entstanden ist, featured dabei den britischen Schauspieler und Komiker John-Luke Roberts in einer Rolle als Radioshow-Host in den legendären Toe Rag Studios in London. "It’s easy to continually work with The Cribs, as the songs always serve as such a great place of inspiration for video ideas", schwärmt Knowles. "With this song’s references to love, loyalty and loneliness it was important to show a range of emotions, and we certainly got that from John-Luke Robert’s performance."

„Es gibt verschiedene Arten, jemanden klein zu machen.“
Nachdem der erste Teil bereits gewisse Tendenzen nicht verleugnen konnte, lässt Andy Muschietti in der Fortsetzung seines ES-Remakes alle Zügel fahren, so dass sein Herz für Trashfans vollends mit ihm durchgeht. Das muss man nicht unbedingt verdammen, aber man muss als Zuschauer schon spezielle Voraussetzungen mitbringen, um dem Ganzen etwas abgewinnen zu können, denn von einem stringenten Filmerlebnis ist „ES II“ meilenweit entfernt.
Dies äußert sich vor allem darin, dass Drehbuchautor Gary Dauberman alles dafür tut, dass die Handlung von niemandem mehr ernst genommen werden kann. Sinnlose Handlungsmotive wechseln sich hier zielsicher mit schwachsinnigen Dialogen ab. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein Resteeintopf aus Motivfetzen ohne jeglichen Spannungsverlauf oder sinnvolle Hinführung auf das Finale. Stephen Kings interessantes ursprüngliches Motiv der Überwindung von Angst durch Umkehr ihrer Machtstrukturen wird dann wie zufällig ans Ende geklatscht und kann dementsprechend den Karren auch nicht mehr aus dem Dreck ziehen. Da können auch die normalerweise talentierten Schauspieler nicht mehr glänzen und ihre Figuren vor dem Abziehbilddasein retten. Als Gegengewicht leistet „ES II“ jedoch etwas anderes. Diejenigen Zuschauer, die bereit sind, den Anspruch einer sinnvollen Handlung fahren zu lassen und den Film als Trash zu goutieren, kommen durchaus auf ihre Kosten. Schließlich wird hier der Kunstbluteimer mit Unterstützung eines Budgets ausgekippt, dass man in diesem Bereich selten sieht. Für den Genuss eines spaßigen No-Brainers ist die unfassbar lange Laufzeit jedoch ein echter Moodkiller. Insofern wäre eine sinnige Empfehlung für die Blu-Ray einfach radikal eine Stunde Langeweile rauszuschmeißen und fertig ist der Partykracher.

Peter Beard und »The End of the Game«
Peter Beard war einer der großen Künstler der Fotografie. Er berichtete in beeindruckenden Bildern vom Kampf um Lebensraum zwischen Mensch und Tier, war der Hoffotograf der amerikanischen High-Society der 50er und 60er Jahre und faszinierte sein Leben lang mit außergewöhnlichen fotografischen Arbeiten. Nachdem er wochenlang als verschollen galt, hat man nun seine Leiche gefunden. Im Taschen-Verlag liegt sein fotografisches Vermächtnis vor.
Wenn man etwas über das Phänomen Peter Beard erzählen will, weiß man nicht recht, wo man eigentlich anfangen soll. Bei seinen vielen Jahren in Afrika, seinen Modeshootings in New York und Paris, seiner Tour mit den Rolling Stones oder der Verwurzelung in höchsten Künstlerkreisen? Vielleicht ist der Ansatz bei seinem Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis passend, da er das abwechslungsreiche Leben des Amerikaners wahrscheinlich am besten widerspiegelt. Als Kunststudent erlernte Peter Beard bei Francis Bacon sein künstlerisches Handwerk, später lernte er auch Pablo Picasso und Salvador Dali kennen und pflegte mit Andy Warhol eine intensive Freundschaft. Bei Aristoteles Onassis und Jackie Kennedy ging er ein und aus; mit Jackies Schwester Caroline Lee Radziwill war er sogar eine zeitlang ein Paar. Über Lee Radziwill lernte er Truman Capote kennen und begleitete als Fotograf mit Capote die berühmt-berüchtigte US-Tournee der Rolling Stones 1972. Er kannte Mary Hemmingway, war mit Ava Gardner befreundet und gilt als Entdecker der Modell-Legenden Veruschka und Iman. Dass er ein Verehrer und Freund der dänischen Afrika-Kennerin und Romanautorin Karen Blixen war, deren Leben in dem Oscar-gekrönten Spielfilm »Jenseits von Afrika« verfilmt wurde, zeigt einmal mehr, wie legendär der Personenkreis war, mit dem sich Beard umgab. Man kann mit Fug und Recht behaupten: Beard war hatte nicht nur Kontakte zum Jetset, er war selbst Teil davon.

Mit der 53 Jahre älteren Karen Blixen verband Peter Beard die Zuneigung und Faszination zum afrikanischen Kontinent. Mit Anfang zwanzig reiste Peter Beard in den sechziger Jahren nach Afrika und lernte dort Blixen kennen. Er begann, den Kontinent durch das Objektiv seiner Kamera zu entdecken, einen Kontinent, den er bisher nur aus ihren Erzählungen kennen gelernt hatte. Was er in insgesamt 23 Jahren in Afrika sehen, erleben und lernen sollte, prägte ihn und seine Arbeiten ein Leben lang. Peter Beard war einer der ersten Zeugen der vom Menschen verursachten, katastrophalen Naturzerstörung, die er am eindrucksvollsten in seinem weltberühmten Werk »Die letzte Jagd« festhielt.
In sechs Kapiteln hat er darin die Eroberung des afrikanischen Kontinents durch die weißen Kolonialherren dokumentiert. Vom Bau der Eisenbahnlinie Mombasa-Viktoria-Uganda bis hin zum massenhaften Tod bringenden Wettstreit um Lebensraum zwischen Mensch und Tier machte er den Einfluss des Menschen auf die afrikanische Natur deutlich. Beard beschrieb auch seine ersten Erfahrungen mit dem afrikanischen Kontinent, wobei die eigenen Eindrücke zwischen der Faszination der Jagd und dem Erstaunen über die allgegenwärtige Kraft und Vielfalt der Natur wechseln. Beard erlebte in seinen Jahren in Afrika das, was er im Original »The End of the Game« nannte. Mit dem stetigen Wachstum der afrikanischen Bevölkerung wurde die Kampfzone zwischen Mensch und Umwelt derart ausgeweitet, dass der Vielzahl der Tiere nicht mehr genug Platz zum Leben blieb. Er hielt in seinen schockierend-erbarmungslosen Bildern fest, wie die Tiere in ihren zu kleinen Reservaten elendig verhungerten. »Ohne Furcht und Hoffnung stirbt das Tier«, so lautet dann auch das abschließende Kapitel in »Die letzte Jagd«, welches in schwarz-weiß das Massensterben von mehr als 35.000 Elefanten in Ostafrika festhält. Wortlos reihen sich in dem Kapitel die Bilder verendender Dickhäuter und ihrer Skelette unter längst abgefressenen Bäumen aneinander.

Der französische Philosoph Romain Gary schrieb 1966 nach der Lektüre von Beards fotografierter Geschichte Ostafrikas in seinem »Letter to an Elephant«: »In my eyes, dear Elephant, sir, you represent to perfection everything that is threatend today with extinction in the name of progress, efficiency, materialism or even reason.« Diese Worte sind älter als vierzig Jahren, doch haben ebenso wie Beards Fotografien nichts von Ihrer Aktualität verloren. Es gibt kaum ein eindringlicheres Zeugnis über die Fatalität des menschlichen Eingreifens in die Natur, als Beards bereits 1965 erstmals veröffentlichtes Buch.

In seinen afrikanischen Jahren führte Peter Beard unzälige Tagebücher. In diesem Dokumentieren des Alltäglichen kann man zweifelsfrei den kreativen Ursprung seines lebenslangen künstlerischen Schaffens erkennen. Er schrieb darin nicht nur seine persönlichen Erinnerungen und Gedanken, sondern er machte die Bücher im Sinne eines afrikanischen Medizinmannes zur Schatztruhe seines Lebens. Wie ein Alchimist klebte, band, knetete, schmierte und tropfte er Haare, Kiesel, Baumrinde, Falter, Federn, Knochen, Lehm, Sand, Blut und vieles mehr in diese schriftlich-gegenständlichen Zeugnisse seiner Existenz. Ein Großteil dieser Bücher ist im Juli 1977 in seiner New Yorker Mühle verbrannt. Nichts als die Grundmauern blieb nach einem verheerenden Feuer von seinem privaten Besitz übrig; 20 Jahre dokumentiertes Leben, darunter Geschenke von Andy Warhol und Francis Bacon sowie alle afrikanischen Bücher sind in dem Hausbrand vernichtet worden.
Doch Beard verfiel nicht in Depressionen oder Trauer, Beard machte weiter. Weiter schrieb, fotografierte, sammelte, montierte, klebte, arrangierte er. Die dabei entstandenen Collagen und Bildmontagen sind faszinierende Dokumente eines zeitkritischen Ästheten von Welt. In ihnen verband er seine Modefotografien mit den erschütternden Aufnahmen des verendenden afrikanischen Großwilds aus den sechziger Jahren. Er verknüpfte diese mit eigenen Zeichnungen und Grafiken, versah diese mit Kommentaren, Geschichten und Erinnerungen. Private Bilder finden sich zwischen Mode- und Erotik-Aufnahmen wieder, Zeitungsausschnitte sind mit organischen Materialien versehen. Diese wilden und experimentellen doch niemals sinnentleerten Collagen schweben in ihrem Durcheinander zwischen dem geordneten Chaos eines Jackson Pollock und der surrealen Ambiguität und Tiefe eines Salvador Dali. Diese Arrangements sind wahre Kunstwerke.
»Le hasard est le plus grand artist«, sagte Honoré de Balzac einst zur Bedeutung des Zufalls für den Künstler, doch Beards Montagen unterliegt eine derart tiefgründige Komposition, dass man geneigt ist, den Zufall aus dem Entstehensprozess geradezu auszuschließen. Aus ihnen spricht vielmehr der Geist eines Weltenbummlers, der das Leben verstanden hat und dem die Missstände unserer Zeit nur allzu bewusst sind.
Peter Beard war einer der außergewöhnlichsten Fotokünstler weltweit. Aus diesem Grund wurde er auch angefragt, die erotischen Aufnahmen für den legendären Pirelli-Kalender 2009 zu machen. Hierfür reiste er mit den Modellen nach Botswana an die Südspitze des afrikanischen Kontinents und fotografierte sie vor der Kulisse der afrikanischen Wildnis. Die entstandenen Fotografien und Collagen wirkten wie ein Konzentrat aus »Die letzte Jagd« und den unzähligen Collagen und Tagebüchern der zwei zusätzlich vorliegenden Beard-Bände. Im Zentrum standen wieder Elefanten, vor denen die Modelle oft wie zerbrechliche Elfenwesen wirken, die der unbändigen (Zerstörungs-)Kraft der afrikanischen Natur ausgeliefert sind. Es ist wie eine Rückkehr zu seinen Anfängen, wieder Dickhäuter, doch dieses mal massiv, kraftstrotzend, lebendig – nicht Opfer des Menschen, sondern vielmehr Bedrohung. Und zugleich sind da wieder seine Bildkompositionen gewesen, die verschiedene Szenen und Naturzustände miteinander in Bezug zueinander setzen und eine neue, faszinierende Ebene der Interpretation schaffen. Und genau in dieser Kunst des Zusammenfügens bestand die bestechende Kunst des Peter Beard.
Peter Beard litt an Demenz, vor wenigen Wochen wurde er als vermisst gemeldet. Nun fand man seine Leiche in einem Wald in East Hampton, die Familie bestätigte den Tod. Was bleiben, sind seine fotografischen Arbeiten und künstlerischen Collagen.

Die PDC Q-School ist vorbei und die Tourcard Gewinner stehen fest! In den vergangenen Tagen konnten sich wieder ambitionierte Dartspieler bei den Q-Schools der PDC in Hildesheim und Wigan um die beliebten Tourcards duellieren. Die Gewinner sind wie folgt: Hildesheim: Harald Leitinger, Mike de Decker, Karel Sedlacek, Steffen Siepmann, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Wesley Harms, Derk Telnekes, Martijn Kleermaker, Daniel Larsson, Boris Krcmar, Krzysztof Kciuk Wigan: Gary Blades, Jason Lowe, Bradley Brooks, Kai Fan, Jeff Smith, Aaron Beeney, Nick Kenney, Scott Waites, Adam Hunt, Ryan Murray, Peter Jacques, Damon Heta, Andy Hamilton, Alan Tabern, Wayne Jones, William Borland, Martin Atkins, Steve Brown, Darren Penhall, Lisa Ashton Somit konnte sich mit Steffen Siepmann auch ein deutscher Spieler qualifizieren und sich eine der begehrten Tourcards sichern. Außerdem konnte sich mit Lisa Ashton die erste Frau erstmals eine PDC Tourcard sichern. Sie konnte sich ihre Tourcard über die PDC Q-School Order of Merit in Wigan erspielen. Dabei machte am Ende nach 4 Tagen genau ein einziges gewonnenes Leg den Unterschied. In Hildesheim war außer Danny "The Bearliner" Tessmann als Berliner Vertreter am Start (siehe Foto). Viele bekannte Gesichter enttäuschten jedoch, bspw. Zoran Lerchbacher oder Fallon Sherrock, die beide bereits einige WM-Erfahrung gesammelt haben. Kurze Erklärung zur Q-School: Jeder Dartspieler ab 16 Jahren kann sich an der Q-School anmelden, um später ins richtige Darts Profigeschäft zu starten. Für die britischen Teilnehmer gibt es das Turnier in Wigan. Die deutschen Spieler und jene aus vielen weiteren europäischen Ländern können aber an der Q-School in Hildesheim teilnehmen. Das klingt erstmal sehr vielversprechend. Dennoch muss die PDC darauf achten, dass nicht zu viele Spieler an der Q-School teilnehmen, deren Talent für den Proficircuit nicht ausreicht. Hierzu erhebt die PDC eine einmalige Anmeldegebühr in Höhe von ca. 400 Pfund. Zusätzlich werden 50 Pfund fällig für die DRA (Darts Regulation Authority) fällig. Oder einfacher gesagt: für das Schiedsgericht der PDC.

Artists who work in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Video, Film, Photography, New Media, Multidisciplinary, Performance Art, Socially-Engaged Practices, Folk, and Traditional Art are encouraged to participate.

Alaina Claire Feldman, Director and Curator, Mishkin Gallery at the City University of New York (CUNY) Baruch College
Feldman recently organized the exhibitions The Aesthetics of Learning, Lise Soskolne: The Work, and Minerva Cuevas: Disidencia as Director and Curator of the Mishkin Gallery at CUNY’s Baruch College. From 2011-2018, she was Director of Exhibitions at Independent Curators International (ICI) and curated the traveling exhibition The Ocean After Nature as well as edited the subsequent catalogue. She was the Managing Editor of ICI’s Sourcebook Series and produced artist-centric publications. Her projects have included long-term support of artists, collectives, archives, and educational opportunities, particularly those beyond the traditional Western cannon. Feldman was previously an editor at the French arts journal May Revue. As a writer, her work has been published in Afterall, Flash Art, The Graduate Center Latinx Studies Guide, and in catalogues and anthologies for museums around the world. Feldman has lectured and taught at the University of Porto, The School of Visual Arts, NYU, Center for Feminist Pedagogy, and with ICI’s Curatorial Intensive. She was the 2017 Annual Beckwith Lecturer at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Tufts, Boston. She is a member of the International Advisory Board of Casa S. Roque – Centro de Arte (CSR), Portugal.
Rachel Gugelberger, Curator, Residency Unlimited
Gugelberger is a cultural producer with a focus on place-based practices around social, cultural, and civic issues. Projects include (after)care, a site-specific exhibition in a former emergency waiting room at Kings County Hospital in East Flatbush, Brooklyn (2019); the inaugural Southeast Queens Biennial (2018); Jameco Exchange, a site-responsive exhibition and socially-engaged education platform in a vacant storefront in Jamaica, Queens (2016); and Hold These Truths (2017) and Bring in the Reality (2015), exhibitions that presented works at the intersection of activism and storytelling at the Nathan Cummings Foundation in Manhattan. Gugelberger is the co-founder of “1@111,” a series of process-oriented discussions that focus on a single work, curatorial premise, or proposition. Independent curatorial projects have focused on the intersection of information, data, and art, including: Once Upon a Time There was the End, the Center for Book Arts, New York, NY; Data Deluge, Ballroom Marfa, TX; and Library Science, Artspace, New Haven, CT. She is the former curator at No Longer Empty (NLE), a non-profit organization that curates site-responsive and community-centered exhibitions, education, and programs in unique spaces, and also served as director of the NLE Curatorial Lab program. Gugelberger has served as co-director of Sara Meltzer Gallery and curator at Exit Art in New York, where she curated the organization’s final exhibitions Every Exit Is an Entrance: 30 Years of Exit Art and Collective/Performative (co-curator). Gugelberger holds an M.A. degree in Curatorial Studies in Contemporary Art and Culture from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, NY.
Peter Gynd, Director, Lesley Heller Gallery
Gynd is an independent curator, fifth generation artist, and the director at Lesley Heller Gallery in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Gynd studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design and has exhibited in both Canada and the U.S. Notable exhibitions curated by Gynd include a permanent exhibition at the Foundation Center, NY; an acclaimed two-person presentation at SPRING/BREAK Art Show (2015); and group exhibitions at Present Company, NY; NARS Foundation, NY; the Northside Festival, NY; Lesley Heller Workspace, NY; and at the Dynamo Arts Association, Vancouver Canada. Gynd’s exhibitions have been featured in Hyperallergic, The Carnegie Reporter, Blouin Artinfo, and Gothamist. Gynd has been a guest visitor at Residencies Unlimited, Kunstraum, and ChaNorth Artist Residency, and a guest juror at 440 Gallery and Sweet Lorraine Gallery.
Sally Eaves Hughes, Curatorial Assistant, Dia Art Foundation
Hughes is a curator specializing in contemporary art across the Americas. As the Curatorial Assistant at Dia Art Foundation, she has assisted on exhibitions of work by Dan Flavin, Sam Gilliam, Renata Lucas, Dorothea Rockburne, and Andy Warhol, as well as the Artists on Artists Lecture Series. Previously, Hughes held positions at numerous institutions in New York, Boston, and Chicago, including David Zwirner, The Whitney Museum of American Art, MIT’s art department, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Hughes holds an M.A. degree in Modern and Contemporary Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies (MODA) from Columbia University.
Eileen Jeng Lynch, Curator, Wave Hill
As Curator of Visual Arts at Wave Hill, Jeng Lynch organizes the Sunroom Project Space for emerging artists, co-curates exhibitions in Glyndor Gallery, and is involved in all aspects of visual arts programming, including publications and the annual Winter Workspace program. Current and recent exhibitions at Wave Hill include Figuring the Floral, Emily Oliveira: Mundo Irrealis (Wish You Were Here), Duy Hoàng: Interarboreal, Bahar Behbahani: All water has a perfect memory., and Ngoc Minh Ngo: Wave Hill Florilegium. Jeng Lynch is also the founder of Neumeraki, which collaborates with artists, organizations, and galleries on curatorial, consulting, writing, and editing projects. Independent curatorial projects include exhibitions at The Yard: City Hall Park, Trestle Gallery, LMAKbooks+design, Sperone Westwater, Lesley Heller Workspace, Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs, Garis & Hahn, and Radiator Gallery. In 2017, Jeng Lynch initiated the ongoing grassroots, multi-state advocacy initiative “Give Voice” Postcard Project. She has contributed to Two Coats of Paint and On-Verge. Previously, Jeng Lynch worked at RxArt, Sperone Westwater, and the Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Contemporary Art. She earned a M.A. degree in Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.A. degree in Art History and Advertising from Syracuse University.
Matthew Lyons, Curator, The Kitchen
Lyons has organized numerous exhibitions, performances, and other programs at The Kitchen since 2005. Recent work includes projects with Moriah Evans, Chitra Ganesh, Trajal Harrell, nora chipaumire, Xaviera Simmons, Sarah Michelson, Aki Sasamoto, Constance DeJong, Kembra Pfahler, and Katherine Hubbard. Upcoming work includes projects with Lauren Bakst and Ka Baird. He’s worked on group exhibitions The Rehearsal, The View from a Volcano: The Kitchen’s Soho Years 1971-1985, One Minute More, Just Kick It Till It Breaks (catalog), Between Thought and Sound: Graphic Notation in Contemporary Music (catalog), and The Future As Disruption, also at The Kitchen. In addition to his work at The Kitchen, Lyons has worked on group exhibitions Dance Dance Revolution at Columbia University, Character Generator at Eleven Rivington Gallery, and Two Moon July at Paula Cooper Gallery. He has contributed catalog essays on the work of Mika Tajima and Vlatka Horvat, and other writing has appeared in Document Journal, Flash Art, PERFORMA 07: Everywhere and All at Once, and Work the Room: A Handbook of Performance Strategies. He is Contributing Editor at Movement Research Performance Journal, having edited the “Six Sides, Typologically Distinct: Black Box / White Cube” series, which he initiated, between 2009-2015.
William Stover, Independent Curator
Stover has been a curator of contemporary art for over 18 years and has held positions in a number of important and diverse institutions including the Carnegie Museum of Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Independent Curators International (ICI), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Stover is one of the founding directors and co-curator for the non-profit arts organization Re-Sited, New York, which is dedicated to re-evaluating the psychology of the “exhibition site” – its particularities, materiality, and direct relationship to the work of art.
Tamas Veszi, Founder, RadiatorArts
Veszi was born in Budapest in 1972 and from a very early age became familiar with contemporary art, painting, video art, performance, and conceptual thinking. He left Hungary at 17, finished his high school education in Israel, and was later accepted to the art school “Instituto Per L’Arte E IL Restauro” in Florence. He lived and worked in Paris before returning to Israel to work as a jeweler and jewelry designer. In 1996, Veszi applied for a Green Card and moved to New York. In 1998, he and several other residents of 70 Commercial Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, formed the “Greenpoint Riverfront Artists" group. They generated several performances, rooftop independent film screenings, and the annual “Open Studio Tour.” He received his B.F.A. degree from Pratt Institute in 2000, and received his M.F.A. degree in 2006 from Brooklyn College, where he studied under Elisabeth Murray and Vito Acconci. He has his first solo show at Allannederpelt Gallery in 2010, and has since participated in several exhibitions in New York and internationally. In 2016, Veszi participated in the EFA Shift Residency program, which provides peer support and studio space for artists who work in arts organizations. Pebble Beach - U.S. Open 2019
Der Golfplatz am 17 Miles Drive in Kalifornien lädt zu den U.S. Open 2019 ein und das wird auch wieder ein Fest für´s Auge. Der Golfcourse an der Steilküste gehört zu den schönsten auf der Welt.
Pebble Beach schlängelt sich an der Steilküste entlang und ist damit fast immer dem Wind, der über dem Pazifik kommt, ausgesetzt. Also keine einfache Aufgabe für die Golfer, aber es wird bestimmt wieder sehr spannend. Und so ganz nebenbei präsentiert adidas seinen neuen Golfschuh in dieser tollen Umgebung. Also die U.S. Open auf diesem Golfplatz, das zieht aber auch jeden an.
Das sind genau die Turniere die unserem Sport gut tun und mitten drin ist Martin Kaymer. Was will das deutsche Golfherz mehr - ach ja einen SIEG! ;-) OK wir werden trotz des tollen letzten Auftritt mal die Erwartungen an unseren deutschen Golfer etwas runter schrauben. Aber wenn er die "Sterne vom Himmel holt", dann sind wir alle so richtig glücklich und können es wahrscheinlich nicht fassen.
U.S. Open 2019
Der Pebble Beach Golf Links hat es so richtig in sich und ist ein würdiger Rahmen für dieses Turnier vom 13. Juni bis 16. Juni 2019. Und jeder Golfer wünscht sich einmal in seinem Leben diesen Platz zu spielen. Warum, das zeigt das Video von Golf Digest.

Ab in den Flieger und nach den U.S. Open den Platz spielen. Na gut das ganze ist nocht so günstig, aber wann hat man schon die Chance das Open Layout zu spielen. Das 4th Holiday Package mit 2 Übernachtungen und 2 Runden gibts ab kostengünstige $2.495,- und wenn man nicht genug hat gibt es für die Verlängerung 20%. War für ein Schnäppchen! ;-)

Pebble Beach wird aufgrund seiner Lage direkt an der Steilküste des 17-Mile Drive oft als einer der schönsten Golfplätze der Welt betrachtet. Gleichzeitig gehört das Greenfee mit 495 US-Dollar zu den höchsten der Welt.
Das erste professionelle Turnier auf dem Platz waren die Monterey Pensinsula Open 1926. Das Turnier gewann Harry Cooper mit 293 Schlägen. 1929 wurde erstmals ein Major Turnier ausgetragen, die United States Amateur Championship. Das Turnier gewann Harrison R. Johnston. Weitere Austragungen der US Amateur gab es 1947, 1961 und 1999, die US Women's Amateur fand 1940 und 1948 in Pebble Beach statt.
Ab 1947 wurde das Bing Crosby National Pro-Am Tournament in Pebble Beach ausgetragen, heute als AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am bekannt. Allerdings findet nur die vierte Runde ausschließlich auf den Pebble Beach Golf Links statt, die ersten drei Runden werden abwechselnd auf dem Spyglass Hill Golf Course, dem Poppy Hills Golf Course und den Pebble Beach Golf Links absolviert. Die U. S. Open wurden bisher fünfmal hier ausgetragen.

[Album+Video] “Running Into You“: The Cribs sind zurück!
The Cribs sind zurück! Die Briten kündigen ihr neues, achtes Album "Night Network" an, das am 13.11. über Sonic Blew / [PIAS] erscheinen wird! Mit der Single "Running Into You" präsentieren die drei Jarman-Brüder - Gary, Ryan und Ross - den ersten Vorboten des Longplayers.
Vier Top-10-Alben in Folge in UK konnten die Indie-Rocker verzeichnen, ehe sich Band und Management zerstritten. Einige musiklose Monate folgten, ehe Dave Grohl auf die Brüder aufmerksam wurde und diese im Frühjahr / Sommer 2019 ins legendäre Foo-Fighters-Studio 606 in Los Angeles einlud, um dort ein neues Album aufzunehmen. “At one point we were actually so disillusioned with what had happened, we didn't even know if we wanted to get back into the band any more” berichtet Sänger Ryan über die ungewisse Zeit. Die drei Brüder, die zu dem Zeitpunkt knapp 5000km auseinanderlebten, groovten sich schnell wieder ein und begangen den Kreativprozess am Album und den zwölf neuen Songs aufzunehmen.

Als ersten Song aus dieser Phase präsentieren die drei Engländer nun den Track "Running Into You", der mit einer einzigartigen Mischung aus bittersüßer Melodie, brutaler lyrischer Ehrlichkeit und nicht enden wollenden Riffs besticht. Die Single erscheint samt Video, das gemeinsam von Andy Knowles & Nick Scott im Stile eines TV-Nachmittagsprogramms inszeniert wurde und den gefeierten Schauspieler Sam Riley (Control, Maleficent, ...) featured. "Our relationship with him goes all the way back to our very first headline tour which we undertook along with his band 10,000 Things - and we have considered him part of the family ever since", so die Jungs über die Zusammenarbeit. "It's an honour to have him involved."
