Palm Springs (2020)

Palm Springs is a consistently funny, well-executed time-loop comedy full of unexpected depths. I’d seen it before, called it one of my favorite movies of 2020 but was a little hesitant when my coworkers suggested we watch it together. A movie this good I don’t want to watch over and over; I want to space out my viewings so I can forget the little details and re-capture some of the surprise I got the first time. My apprehension was unfounded, as it proved just as good on a rewatch. You don’t know what you’re getting into when you step into this movie.

On November 9, in Palm Springs, Sarah (Cristin Milioti) is shocked when Nyles (Andy Samberg) - a complete stranger - gives a touching speech at her sister’s wedding. While everyone celebrates, they connect privately. The next morning, Sarah wakes up. It’s still November 9th. Nyles has been stuck in a time loop. Every morning, he wakes up and it’s November 9th. Now, it's happening to Sarah too.

You expect a certain kind of humor from this concept. Nyles has done it all so he knows exactly what dance moves everyone will pull during the wedding reception - it makes him move on the floor like no one else could - and his time in the loop has made him so nonchalant about stuff like death it’s hilarious. That’s all well done but the big laughs come from his pairing with Sarah. She’s new to this, so he has to do his best to explain to her everything he already knows about this time loop, to no avail. It gets funnier when she accepts her fate and decides to make the best of it. With their life free of consequences, they pull elaborate pranks on the wedding guests, spring expertly coordinated and rehearsed dances “out of nowhere” and find endless ways to mess around and have a good time.

With excellent performances by Andy Samberg and Cristin Milloti - who have terrific chemistry, it’s easy to think this will be a nice, breezy rom-com that eventually gets solved when…. I dunno. The two declare their love for each other and break the time-loop spell or something? but there's more to the movie. Nyles has been stuck in the time loop for so long this is his life now. While everything may reset every day, it’s a vacation that will never end. He never has to work. He can do whatever he wants and never suffer the repercussions. Nothing he does matters, and he sees it as a good thing. Every morning he wakes up in a relationship with a woman who’s cheating on him (Meredith Hagner as Misty) but he doesn’t care. In fact, he likes it. If he ever wants sex, he knows what to say to her and on the days where he finds Misty intolerable, he’ll befriend someone else at the party. What’s there not to love about this perpetual Palm Springs? As he falls for Sarah, it feels as though things have just gotten better… but they aren’t, because she’s not like him. Breaking free from the time loop could be synonymous with that stage in a relationship where you move in together, meet each others’ parents, or get married. Moving forward is scary, it carries risks, but without those risks, what's the point? Sarah understands that the uncertain is what makes life living. The way our protagonists grow and the realizations they make along the way is often upsetting, which compliments the hilarity wonderfully. This is the kind of movie you can watch over and over and always find some new detail that makes you see just how well-written it is.

Palm Springs starts off as raunchy fun and then comes at you from the side with the heavy emotions. The blend is so smooth you look back and are surprised you didn’t see it coming. It packs so much into its story and characters you’ll be shocked it only lasted 90 minutes. This is a refreshingly romantic and uproarious movie - a new favorite for everyone who sees it. But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) Teen romantic comedy about a young lesbian girl sent to conversion camp. Funny, sad, sweet, inspiring, sort of wish there were a lot more films like this because it warmed my little heart.

Barbie (2023) Everything that could be said about this film has already been said because people wouldn't shut up about it for months. For my two cents, I thought it was very well made and the script was good.

Women On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) One of Almodovar's finest, it is hilarious but also avant-garde, dramatic (the way a soap opera is dramatic) but also very real and it's just beautiful to watch.

Fever Pitch (1997) Colin Firth stars in this very British story written by Nick Hornby, about a man who really likes his favourite football team. It's funny, romantic, rings very real and also Colin Firth plays working class background remarkably well.

Underworld (2003) Dark, gritty, fun. Vampires, werewolves, guns. Action-packed, satisfying level of lore, good performances. Michael Sheen.

Heartlands (2002) Heartwarming, sweet, inspiring, it's a road movie about a man who rides his moped all the way to the big city to win back his wife and suddenly realizes how big and wonderful the world is. Michael Sheen.

Music Within (2007) Based on the real story of how veteran Richard Pimentel became a disabled rights activist and helped pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. Inspiring, funny, occasionally heartbreaking. Michael Sheen (actually steals the show as Art Honeyman).

7 Days In Hell (2015) Quite possibly THE funniest thing I watched in 2023. Mockumentary about two fictional tennis players (played by Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington), playing a match that lasts a whole week. There is not much to be said here, except that it was HILARIOUS. Michael Sheen (also steals the show for me).

Beautiful Boy (2010) Not to be confused by the 2018 film of the same name. This one is about a couple whose son has committed a mass shooting and then killed himself. It completely avoids any sort of sensationalism. The most dramatic moments happen off-screen. It is a study in the cruelty of time and how life has to go on, even in the face of great tragedy. I couldn't stop crying in the end. Michael Sheen.

This is a tough question to answer because I feel like it happens in stages. It's pretty clear that Ben has feelings for Devi from the beginning. He notices her. He sees her failed attempt at flirting with Jonah and he sees her reaction to Paxton. He goes out of his way to get her attention. All of that is straight out of the teenage-boys-with-awkward-flirting-skills starter pack.

His realization that he likes Devi happens in episode six. He is miserable because Devi is icing him out and Andy Samberg asks the question "why did Ben even care?" . Those of us who picked up on their flirting from episode 1 know exactly why, but for the rest of the audience and for Ben this is a turning point.  By the end of the episode Devi Venmo's him money "so he never has to accept food from a pedo again" which means everything to him. In a life of neglect, someone actually listened to him and remembered.

For Devi, things are more complicated. I actually believe her feelings for Ben have also existed from episode 1 but are very dormant. She notices the things he does, pushes herself to be as good as him, and obviously their flirty banter is off the charts. However, Devi confuses her fixation on him with hatred. Things start to change in episode 2 when he decides to be nice to her after she lashes out at him in class, and she thinks maybe he's not the worst. There is a turning point again in episode 5, where they decide to team up for Model UN and she thinks maybe they could be friends. The final realization that she has feelings for him happens in episode 10 when he says "I just wanted to make sure you were okay." Maitreyi is such an incredible actor, and you can see the realization flash across her face. She never turns back after that.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022, dir. Akiva Schaffer) - review by Rookie-Critic

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was face-meltingly funny. Talk about a non-stop joke machine from all angles: dialogue, environment, action; almost every second of this thing is jam-packed with jokes. The best part is, almost all of them hit! Even something as small as Chip & Dale walking through the front door of an apartment when they come in, then absentmindedly crawling down the wall of the building to leave while they have a conversation is just fueled with an awe-inspiring amount of comedic timing and prowess. This movie/concept just has humor baked-in at the seams and I loved it. Now, it's by no means as good as the all-time toon-meta classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, but it is this generation's equivalent, I would say. There were at least 2 different spots I can recall where I had to actually pause the movie until I was done having a laughing fit over what just happened on the screen. Andy Samberg, John Mulaney, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and literally every other member of this insanely large cast gives every single piece of themselves to their performances, and Akiva Schaffer directs so swiftly and effortlessly that it is hard to find anything to complain about at all. The only thing, and it's a massive nitpick, is that the story can be predictable, not that anyone watching even cares by the time that becomes a "problem." Admittedly, I have never seen a single episode of the original Rescue Rangers cartoon, not that that deterred me in the slightest obviously, so I would love to hear from someone who watched and loved the show to get their perspective on this, because I adored it. Easily one of the funniest movies I've seen in recent memory.

Score: 9/10

Just the fact that Ugly Sonic (yes, human-teeth, pre-fix, movie Sonic the Hedgehog) is a very important character tells you all you need to know about the quality and care that went into making this.

Over the course of its previous seven seasons, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has gone of out of its way to make its main cast of characters unusually diverse and compassionate, purposefully upending expectations of what “a cop show” should be and look like from the beginning. Jake and Rosa get some scenes with real teeth to them, especially as she calls him out on centering himself in her experiences - but her storyline is otherwise presented in something of a vacuum from the rest of the show. They’re all sad that Rosa quit, of course, but basically understand it as a personal choice on her part that’s irrelevant to their own experiences. When Amy comes back from maternity leave and excitedly asks for “everything that happened” while she was gone, the first answer is that resident dirtbag Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) retired. They’ve barely even reconsidered the nature of what they do beyond how uncomfortable it is that more people feel empowered to look at them with disdain. On the other, it’s downright jarring that no one else seems to have had the same debate with themselves. On the one hand, it makes total sense that Rosa, a person who only barely tolerates working alongside other people at all, would be the one to take the drastic step of leaving policing altogether. Take Rosa’s resignation, the season’s clearest response to the real world and biggest creative swing overall. Meaningfully addressing the consequences of police corruption would inevitably mean puncturing not just its premise, but its ultimately optimistic worldview.

At the end of the day, this series is determined to make people feel better by each episode’s end, and has successfully done so for many (including this writer, who has, full disclosure, more than once called “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” one of her “comfort shows”). On paper, each of these story threads makes perfect sense for the world that “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has established, in which its self-consciously “progressive” precinct is an exception within the more obviously backwards machine of the NYPD writ large.Īnd yet, it’s hard not to leave “The Good Ones” feeling like there was a whole other episode of meatier material left behind, perhaps because unpacking it might have imploded the show from the inside out. Amy (Melissa Fumero), back from maternity leave, spirals when she thinks she’s lost Holt’s affection, until he finally admits to her that he’s so shaken up from the year’s events that he’s barely been keeping it together. trying to help victims of police brutality, agrees to work with Jake on a case only to realize he’s just doing it to prove that “not all” cops are so bad. In addition to Rosa resigning, Boyle spends the episode annoying his Black boss Terry (Terry Crews) with anti-racist talking points that are as well-meaning as they are deeply annoying. After all, I can't imagine the series coming to a close without characters like Adrian Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas), Doug Judy (Craig Robinson), and, of course, Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), making a special appearance.“The Good Ones,” co-written by David Phillips and Dewayne Perkins, does its best to tackle the ongoing controversies around the police, systemic corruption, and community distrust of all the above. I hope that Brooklyn Nine-Nine finds a way to pack the final 10 episodes of the season with special guests. NBC recently announced that the final season would debut the week after the Tokyo Olympic Games, whose closing ceremony is set for August 8.
