PERSEPHONE’S LAMENT ⇢ a gcu installment
Dr. Erin Angelos was comfortable in her position as an attending physician in one of the top hospitals in the country. Still, something was missing. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it. But when a position opened up at Metro-General for a new outreach program, she couldn’t stop herself from transferring, uprooting her life to start anew in an all too familiar place—Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, New York. A place she hadn’t been to since she left for medical school.
Though the city was a bit different than it was when she was younger, much of it was still the same. Erin settled into life in Hell’s Kitchen as well as could be expected. Her new job entailed house calls and visits to various shelters, footwork she didn’t mind doing, and it felt much more satisfying than her previous position. However, no one anticipated the sudden, staggering surge in gang violence. Doctors were needed more than ever before and Erin was kept busy at the hospital and on the streets.
She was ordered to go home, get some rest, but with the carnage she’d seen, sleeping felt like the last thing on her mind. So, she found a little bar off the beaten path called ‘Josie’s’ and made a home out of a barstool. It was there she met Karen Page as she ordered another round for herself and her coworkers—a pair of local lawyers, Erin learned. Notable ones. Karen offered Erin a round at the pool table. And, although she wasn’t keen on the idea of butting into strangers’ spaces, it sounded like a decent way to get the blood off her mind. Karen introduced her to Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock and they played a round.
Who would’ve thought that an innocent game with strangers would lead to the destruction that followed? Or to a tumultuous relationship with one of New York City’s best lawyers—and it’s best defender?

Wanted to write a fairly short succession future fic set in 2044 where Connor has been voted president lmao and the Roy’s and all their kids, plus a grandkid via Sophie are all at his house for his 80th birthday, Tom and Shiv had two kids in the end a girl and a boy, and Greg also had a son from some woman who he was with for like 6 months when he temporarily called off the Tomgreg affair, and all the Roy’s refer to her as an nrp of course cause their awful. Anyway Tom eventually leaves Shiv (Shiv living her best life in 2044 with a younger guy) for Greg and sort of ended up being in Greg’s kid (Layton’s) life more then his own (although he wasn’t even in his that much because of the job) but it obviously causes tension, but Eliza and Angelo (Tomshiv kids) don’t actually hate Layton or anything but there is some jealously but they like to keep him in their little trio, they sort of mirror ken/shiv/Rome, and would be at Connor’s birthday bitching at each other. Anyway Eliza is the first child and is like 24 and I gave her a girlfriend to be her plus one at the birthday, but then I was like how did they meet? And I was like her girlfriend Khalie was a college intern at Waystar of course. And then I wanted write about how they met the year before, then do Connor’s birthday. But then I got really into Eliza as a character and wanted to write about an argument she overheard when she was 10 between Tom and Shiv not long before they divorced. And now I’m just really into Eliza and the inherent trauma of being the daughter of Tom wambsgans and Shiv Roy. And also wanted to do a whole thing where Greg proposed to Tom and few years after Tom and Shiv divorced, but Tom rejected saying it wasn’t the right time, but it actually had more to do with his internalised homophobia and his issues with marriage, and Greg is still hinting about marriage but Tom worries he is too old now (he’s 69 😏) Also wanted to do something about Roman and Connor trying to get Shiv and Kendall to make up after 24 years of basically not talking and turning into the next Logan and Ewan.
Also Conwilla have 4 kids. Also as Roman seemingly escaped the cycle in the final episode so I let him come out and marry and Irish guy and they have a daughter called Erin. Tom is still the American CEO at Waystar, Greg is head of parks, I figured Shiv would work at Pierce (maybe CEO I don’t know) and Kendall and Roman started the 100, which is semi successful idk. Also Kendall has a six year old that he named Kendall junior lmao who is the same age his grandchild via Sophie. Anyway this is basically potential novel length at this point and I just wanted to do a crack fic about Connor becoming president at an extremely old age. And I already have 3 other succ fics I have on go that I do plan on finishing eventually ugh why am I like this.

37, 34, 27 for the ask game :p
I see you've not only asked them in descending order, but also order of ascending difficulty
37. Dogs or cats?
I like well-behaved dogs to visit, and cats to live with
34. Favorite flower?
My answer is very normie and I'm sorry
I always thought black flowers were cool-looking because they're so iridescent and interesting to look at.
Symbolically, my favorite is the hyacinth.
If we take aesthetics and symbolism together and meet in the middle, I'd say gardenias.
As for usefulness, I really love dandelions; they're also pretty in a very nonconventional way, and they carry dreams with them on the wind so. Dandelions are just the ultimate flower.
27. Favorite book?
You know I have trouble with these kinds of questions Ciphey-wiphey
My favorite "adult" book is Armor, by John Steakley (pronounced "steek-ly," which I just learned today; been pronouncing it "steak-ly" forever). It's a great military sci-fi that my dad leant to someone so I can't read it anymore and I'm so fine with that really it's not a big deal- anyway it's about a lot of things, including the effect of violence on humans and it's very good and everyone should read it
I also really liked Dracula, but because of Reasons I still haven't finished it, so I don't count it as a favorite. Yet.
My favorite "children's" book is. Well, see, it's complicated. When I was little, it was Little Pilgrim's Progress. When I was a little older than that, it was The Chronicles of Narnia. After that, it was, on paper, Warriors by Erin Hunter; but in secret it was a comic series called Bone by Jeff Smith. I was... going through a lot. After that, I was reading a lot of library fantasy books, my favorite of which were Children of the Lamp and Peter and the Starcatchers (I was very upset when Pan came out. Still haven't watched it).
And then I discovered Percy Jackson, and lemme tell you, that was the most obsessed with a book series I ever was, for a few reasons:
1. It was a Greek mythology fanfiction. During the time that I was reading Bone, I was also poring through all of the mythology books I could find in the school library, most of which were Greek. This meant that Rick Riordan had reawakened in 14-year-old me a hyperfixation that had lain (almost) dormant for... *counts on fingers* nine years (edit: i was wrong i counted wrong i'm sorry it was five). And he did it well (I will fight anyone who says otherwise).
2. It was about a guy who'd switched schools a lot, and had nowhere to call home really, finding a place where he belonged with people who were like him. It was a literal power fantasy for me.
3. Even though he'd found a place, he was still very different from his new extended found/actual family. This was something else with which I could connect, as someone who'd often felt like a stranger in my own home.
4. Cool action and magic and fighting and blood and hero complexes and swords and secret swords and secret magic swords and did I mention the swords and also there was Nico di Angelo, my son, my everything, my favorite boy-
Right. Back to the question. Um. What was it again? Right! Favorite book: there are too many throughout my life for me to decide.

Erin's quotation about ‘making a mess’ carries valuable lessons regarding taking messy action, fostering creativity, and embracing intention. It emphasizes allowing oneself to explore and experiment without fear of perfection or rigid structure.
My key takeaways:
Embrace Imperfection: By allowing ourselves to make a mess, we let go of the pressure to achieve flawlessness. It encourages us to embrace imperfection as a natural part of the creative process. We discover new possibilities, unexpected outcomes, and uncharted territories through messy action.
Spark Creativity: Making a mess opens space for innovation and creative breakthroughs. It encourages us to step outside what is familiar and comfortable. When we allow ourselves to explore without constraints, we tap into our innate creativity, sparking fresh ideas and novel approaches.
Cultivate Intentional Growth: While making a mess implies a degree of chaos, it is essential to approach it with intention. It is not about aimless or haphazard actions but rather a purposeful exploration. By intentionally immersing ourselves in the messy process, we create opportunities for growth, learning, and personal development.
Build Momentum: The quote suggests that momentum arises from making a mess. When we take messy action, we generate forward movement and energy. It propels us beyond stagnation and inertia, driving us toward progress and accomplishment. Embracing messiness builds momentum that moves us closer to our goals.
The transformative power of ‘making a mess’ encourages us to let go of perfectionism, nurture creativity, act with intention, and harness the momentum that emerges from embracing the mess. By doing so, we unlock our full potential, drive innovation, and embark on a path of continuous growth.

Family Ties Chapter 7
By the end of day, the Unit had tracked the PI and found he had been paid for by one of Michael’s cousins that encouraged Michael’s power grabs within the family. Hank without Brie knowing actually reached out and contacted Michael’s uncle Angelo. They met and he gave Angelo the proof of Michael’s moves against Angelo and attempts to grab power. Angelo asked about Brie and Hank shared with him a digital picture from his cell. “Voight, take care of her. She deserves better than my nephew. She was always better, and I saw that.” Angelo said turning to leave.
“What do we do about Michael?” Hank asked him.
“I have given him my council. If he chooses not to follow it, then he deserves what he brings on himself. I will remove all the family resources from him, but he has friends elsewhere who will not honor the family codes. Watch her back, Voight.” Angelo said entering the car.
The next day when Voight arrived at the precinct, Brie was at her desk completing the needed paperwork based on the day she missed as well as the reports that covered her call from 51. Her phone rang and gained her attention. It was Trudy from downstairs. “Hey Cinderella. How are things up there?” Trudy said to her causing Brie to smile knowing if Platt gave you a nickname you were someone she liked.
“Fine, Sergeant Platt. How can I help you?” Brie said.
“Got a set of paperwork that needs to be shared up there based on a current case. But I am slammed down here. Can you be the messenger for me?” Trudy said.
“I’ll be right down, Sergeant.” Brie said hanging up her phone. She stood from her desk straighten her skirt smoothing it down and grabbed her coffee mug. She walked into the break room and dumped the cold beverage and grabbed her water bottle from the refrigerator setting it on her desk before she began to walk down the stairs. The guys and girls had noticed that she was trying out a new outfit today. The girls had commented making her blush about how she was working her curves and Jay inwardly couldn’t disagree. He watched as she walked past in the new skirt and heels leaving the unit to head to the main desk. He also had noticed in the air a new scent. It was vanilla and seem to spread as she moved around so it must have been hers.
After passing through the gate, Brie finished her trek down the stairs and arrived at Trudy’s main desk. Trudy passed a stack of files and envelopes to her and smiled. “Thanks, Princess.” Trudy said as she turned to the men gathered around her desk. Brie quietly smiled to herself. She had decided that Trudy was all gruff but was in fact a warm person and a good friend to have in your corner.
After walking halfway up the stairs reaching the gate for Intelligence, Brie felt as if she was being watched and looked around the lobby. Her jaw dropped and the envelopes dropped from her hands onto the stairs as she pulled the files closer to her chest. Michael was there staring right at her with a dark coat on. His eyes filled with such hate and anger that Brie felt her skin chill. He nodded his head at her and smiled a smile she knew in her gut was backed with evil. He raised his hand only to show her former engagement ring off to her on his pinky finger.
Trudy noticed her actions and her pale complexion after not hearing her use her code to enter Intelligence and looked to see who Brielle was staring at. Trudy moved to react and the guy she didn’t recognize took off running out of the precinct. At the same time, Kim had come down when Brie hadn’t returned right away and began to pick up the envelopes to help Brie who was unsteady on her feet trying to back against the wall of the staircase. Trudy came over to them. “Who was it, Brielle? Who did you see?” she said quickly.
Brie sat with Trudy and Kim’s help stunned into silence and from fear. She could feel her hands along with the rest of her body shaking and her stomach was turning. “How did he find me? Why was he here?” she whispered out loud enough Trudy and Kim to hear.
Kim placed her hands-on Brie’s shoulders getting her attention. “Who was it, Brielle? Was it Michael you saw?” she asked. Brie just nodded as she began to feel numb and couldn’t focus on the people around her. Kim immediately helped her to her feet and moved to scan her upstairs to the safety of the unit with Trudy helping them both. “Come on, Brie. Let’s get you upstairs. Can you help me please, Sergeant Platt? I need to get her safe and then tell Sergeant Voight what just happened.” Kim said quickly.
Jay saw Brie’s face coming up the stairs and knew immediately something was wrong. “Kim, what happened?” he called getting the team’s attention. He moved to help them get Brie upstairs taking over from Kim and Platt by placing one arm around Brie’s waist and putting her arm over his shoulders quickly lifting her out of her shoes on the stairs as he swung her legs up into his other arm. He moved her easily while Kim and Trudy followed behind towards her desk inside the unit. He inhaled her vanilla scent again and felt her curl closer to him but was more focused on her shaking hands and pale features as her hands went around his neck.
“She said she saw Michael in the lobby downstairs.” Kim said quickly as they reached the top of the stairs with Brie’s shoes in hand.
“I noticed her reaction and by the time I spotted him and moved to react. He took off.” Trudy said.
Jay nodded as they helped Brie to her chair at her desk. He looked to Ruzek and Atwater who pulled up the lobby cameras and quickly found the person Brie had seen. They printed the picture and showed it to Jay and Kim. Ruzek held it up, “Is this who you saw, Sergeant?” he asked. Trudy nodded quickly.
Kim and the others went to brief Voight. Trudy watched as Jay tried to talk to Brie. “Brie. Look at me, Brie. It’s Jay. You’re safe. He’s gone.” He said placing her hands on his chest to feel the vibrations. Brie began to move her eyes and look around her.
“I’m back in Intelligence. He’s gone.” She whispered.
Trudy nodded her head and spoke to Jay. “Look after her, Chuckles.” Jay smiled slightly as Trudy turned and headed back downstairs.
Brie continued to look around and heard Jay start to talk to her again. “Brie, can you hear me? Talk to me, Brie.” He said quietly.
“Jay?” she asked.
“Yes, I’m here, Brie.” He said placing his hands around hers.
“He was here, Jay. Downstairs. He looked so angry. He had my old engagement ring on his pinky. His look was so evil at me. How did he find me, Jay? How?” she said quietly.
He felt her hands shaking in his. “I don’t know, Brie. But I do know we won’t let him hurt you.” He said his presence calming her.
Voight came out and moved straight to her desk. “How’s she doing, Halstead?” he said quickly.
“Seems to be in shock. Slowly coming out of it. Realizes that he is gone. Still a little out of it though.” Jay said moving to stand but feeling her grasp out for him. Her movements surprised the team. He kneeled back down in front of her. “Hey. It’s okay, Brielle. I’m here. You are safe with the team.” He said again.
“The team?” she said finally looking into his face meeting his eyes.
He smiled slightly at her. “Yeah, you’re upstairs with the team. Michael is gone and didn’t have a chance to get near you. We have your back, Brie.” He said as she began to look around her at all her friends watching over her.
She blushed slightly bringing color back to her face. “I am sorry to be all this trouble. I know you all will support me. I just wish he would go away and leave me alone.” She said looking down embarrassed.
Kim, Hailey and Vanessa moved closer and placed their hands on her shoulders and back. Vanessa spoke first. “Remember, none of this is your fault. It’s all him and I know there is not one of us here who think it’s your fault. I’m sure there are others who might like 5 minutes with him alone but can’t ever promise that will happen. I can even think of some guys at 51 and Med who would help.” She said making them all laugh slightly.
Seeing her start to come back from her surprise and shock allowed the team to all release a deep breath. Brie looked down and was surprised. “Hey, what happened to my shoes?” she said.
“They are right here. Halstead kind of picked you up out of them when we were moving you upstairs.” Kim said bringing her shoes to her.
Seeing a slight twinkle in her eye, Brie spoke again. “I thought it was the guys at 51 that were supposed to sweep people off their feet, Detective.” She smiled as the others all began to laugh. Jay smiled and laughed moving back to his desk.
He listened as Voight called down to Trudy with instructions of how to handle Michael’s reappearance. Jay took a deep breath trying to expel Brielle’s perfume from his senses as he refocused on the job in front of him. He knew she trusted him and the feel of her in his arms was a surprising experience. He remembered the night she had appeared in front of the precinct injured from the abuse Michael had put her through. Jay knew he felt differently in protecting Brielle than anyone else. But he set that aside as they worked together, and he had been down this road before with Erin. Plus, he had no clue what she was feeling after the appearance of her ex-fiancé.

Detective Chuckles
Jay Halstead x reader
So this was requesteddddd I hope this was what you wanted if not I’m sorryyy
“Knock knock, your favorite detective is back!” Jay cheered as he pulled up a chair next to my desk.
“Mhmm welcome back” I rolled my eyes teasingly.
Jay always liked to hang out by me, it was obvious he had had a little crush on me from the time they brought me in the building. Technically I was assigned to Intelligence, but I’m not a cop. Actually all I was there for was to keep records straight for the team and basically get coffee for everyone. I was an over glorified receptionist.
I was a little annoyed, I had a lot to do. They had just broken a big case where some sort of gang retaliation murder went down, Jay was happily rambling on about it to me. I could never be mean to him though, he was such a kindhearted guy and we had been through some of the same things.
He drummed his fingers on my desk, “Soooo how has your day been?”
I smiled a little. Not many people actually cared enough or had the time to ask me about my day, I didn’t take offense to it though I just held up in my corner in intelligence filling away.
“My day as a whole has been alright Jay but right now it’s going pretty good. What about you?” I questioned and his eyes lit up, I guess he saw an opening.
“It’s been pretty good, knock on wood. I was looking to ask about something though.”
“Well don’t leave me in suspense what is it ?” I cocked my eyebrow up
The big bad cop actually blushed like a schoolboy, “ Well I want you to know I’ve cleared it with Voight so ya know if you’d like I’d kinda like to take you out to dinner tonight. Ya know... as a date.”
I wasn’t surprised but I wasn’t aggravated either. It was actually kinda sweet how excited Jay was. Plus If we went on one date and it was a bust at least he’d stop pestering me, I thought.
“Sure, let’s go for it. Where’d you have in mind?”
“How about Angelo’s? The Italian place down on the corner.” I nodded, I loved that place and he knew it. He had actually brought take out from the restaurant for me for lunch a couple of times as a surprise.
Six o’clock rolled around and I followed Jay out. I’m assuming he had told Voight that I had said yes to his offer because he smiled and waved us off as we left. Jay looked awful excited. As we approached the parking lot Jay turned and stopped me before I veered off to my car.
“How about I drive you? I’m sure you’re tired. You’ve had your work cut out for you with this last case.” I thought about it for a second and thought what the hell why not.
I climbed up into his truck with the help of the running boards he had bolted on, him teasingly laughing at me for being short. When I finally got up into the truck I slapped him on the arm.
We sat in a few moments of silence at a traffic light before he finally broke it. “Thank you for giving me a chance,” he said,” I know I’m a bit of a pest but since Erin left you have been the nicest warmest person to me, I’m sure it’s been a little obvious that I’ve got a little crush on you..” he trailed off, glancing over trying to catch my reaction.
My heart kinda melted when he said that, I came into the unit right as Erin left and I knew how heartbroken Jay had been, we’d spent many late nights at my desk multitasking between talking and finishing reports. I knew I had pushed him away before, but that kind of pushed the image I had had of him previously out of my mind. I guess I had assumed he’d be some sort of player after everything that happened with Erin. I didn’t expect him to be as vulnerable of a person as he was. Maybe I was the one afraid of being vulnerable.
I reached my hand out and patted the hand he had rested on the gear shifter. “Two things Jay: I love Angelo’s, and I think you’re worth giving a chance. You aren’t a pest though.”
He tried to hide the grin plastered across his face as he pulled in. One thing was for sure he was a better driver than me by far, I hated driving in the city.
He actually told me to wait for a second and came around to help me down from the truck, and ushered me inside. He gently placed his hand on the small of my back to guide me, “Is this okay?” He asked. I nodded and smiled; I really did like it.
We sat for hours but it kinda felt like minutes. We shared stories, I told him about my home town. Jay genuinely sounded like he wanted to know all about me. All of what he didn’t already know anyways. Jay shared with me about his family, his hopes and dreams, trivial things like his middle name and his favorite color.
For a moment I suppose we forgot ourselves because I looked down to realize he had been holding my hand in his, I guess I had been having such a great time I didn’t even think to pull my hand away. I suppose that meant I liked it.
We sat and talked and talked, it must’ve been ages. We actually sat till about a half hour until closing. It was so late by then he figured I’d be too tired to drive, I guess the couple glasses of wine that I had had wouldn’t have improved my driving skills any further either.
He was nice enough to drop me off at my house, walking me up to the door and everything.
As I unlocked the door I turned back to him and smiled. “If you’d like, I’d really like to do this again sometime.” He asked.
I nodded and I made him blush a little as I gently placed my hand up against his chest as he leaned in closer to me, “Sure, if you can stand to see me two days in a row how about you come by for breakfast tomorrow. I’ll have everything cooked when you get here.” I offered.
His tired eyes lit up, “I’d really like that.”
I let him continue to lean in close to me as he placed his hands around my waist, he placed a tentative kiss on my forehead then looked to me as if he was waiting for approval. I smiled and it was like he could finally breathe.
“Goodnight Jay, see you in the morning. Text me when you get home so I know you got back alright.”
He blushed a little,”definitely, goodnight. Again, thank you for giving me a chance.”
“I’m glad I did. I’ve had a great time tonight.”

While the night is far from quiet, what with all of the costumed patrons milling about the lobby and rubbing elbows on a too-crowded bench, it is peaceful. It’s been at least an hour of carefree mingling, and the only inconvenience anyone has found thus far is the guy dressed as H.H. Holmes being a little too method in his acting, stalking around amongst the crowd before disappearing the moment you see his blur in your periphery. Those who haven’t indulged in the open bar serving jello shots downstairs have likely opted to wait until after their tour through the undoubtedly haunted house, while others nurse their flasks and plead with whatever cosmic force they believe ( or don’t believe ) in that the line will shuffle a touch more quickly so they can black out for the night.
Fortunately for the impatient, a handful of groups are called to enter their respective rooms, though instead of enjoying the night with the ones who came here on their arms, they’re suited with a handful of strangers, acquaintances, and enemies. Now isn’t the time to brandish your weapons—let’s call it a truce for Halloween. Each group is assigned a specific room, and, satisfied with their groupings or not, they press forward. At first glance, no room looks any different than what you’d expect, maybe more void of furniture and spooky decor than ideal for the holiday which revolves around that sort of thing, but for once, it appears the night may go smoothly. Until the doors lock behind them.
Part II of the Halloween Murder Castle event has begun ! Your characters are assigned to a group, which then are assigned to rooms. It is up to you and your groupmates how they will survive the obstacles hindering the exit—but be warned; there’s an imposter in your midst. Someone in your group, who agreed to what they now realize is a test of their wit and strength, may opt to take the selfish way out and preserve their own life over the lives of their teammates. Imposters, determine whether you will prioritize yourself or your group to escape each room. Good luck !
This event will last until 9 PM EST on NOVEMBER 3RD, 2020. Under the cut are your group assignments, plus room assignments. PLEASE collaborate with your groupmates to determine how your characters will solve their rooms and make their escape. If you have any questions, always feel free to reach out ! Happy Halloween !

ROOMS
ROOM 1 — THE PIT
SUMMARY: You and your fellow group members enter the room, and it seems relatively normal, if not a touch boring. The walls are a sleek chrome with a matching floor and ceiling, and the only thing that stands out is an ornate door opposite from—and identical to—the one you entered through. You try it, but it doesn’t open, and the door you just came through suddenly decides not to open either. Then, you feel the tremble, and the center of the floor begins to open up into an abyss lined with jagged glass, and metal, and everything else that screams tetanus. In the center of the new floor is a pedestal, and atop the pedestal is a key—surely the way out.  CHALLENGE: You and your teammates must find a way to retrieve the key before the floor fully gives way and engulfs all of you. How you do this is up to your own discretion, but you’d better count on some injuries.
ROOM 2 — THE OCEAN
SUMMARY: You and your fellow group members enter the room, which is devoid of any furniture, and, well, much of anything, really, besides what looks like a hatch on the ceiling. Oddly enough, the walls look like glass—or some version of it—though they’re not as breakable as they seem when you rap your knuckles against them. For the first minute or so, you’re confused, but then a pipe creaks somewhere overhead, and water bubbles up from under your feet. You all realize it at once—the room is filling up fast, and the door you entered through is deadbolted. You’re trapped in here.  CHALLENGE: Find a way out of the room before the water reaches the ceiling. You’ll only have about twenty-five minutes to determine which part of what wall is breakable enough to escape through. Alternatively, you can test your swimming skills—and gamble with what’s left of your oxygen—to get the hatch on the ceiling open. It will take all of you, so no matter your allegiance, it’s imperative you work together.
ROOM 3 — THE VIEW
SUMMARY: This room is not what it appears—it’s decorated floor-to-ceiling like the streets of France, complete with a gaudy painting of the Eiffel Tower, street lamps and mannequins in period clothing. It’s beautiful, and a far cry from scary—that is, until you start to lose your breath standing in place. At first you wonder what’s wrong with you, until you realize your partner’s breath is becoming ragged and wheezy, too. It strikes you a second too late; the oxygen is being removed from this room little by little, and suddenly the breathtaking view makes sense. ( What a horrible pun, eh ? ) You’ll suffocate if you stay in here any longer, so it’s up to you and the rest of your teammates to find the exit.  CHALLENGE: The door you entered through is locked, so weave your way through the “street” to find the other exit. You should know it’s locked, too, so you’ll have to work together to find the key. It could be in a flower pot, it could be inside the skull of a mannequin—but if you don’t find it, this cheap version of Paris is the last thing you’ll ever see.
ROOM 4 — THE TUNDRA
SUMMARY: The moment you cross the threshold of this room, you feel the drop in temperature, and the door falls shut behind you. The moment you turn for it, you realize it’s jammed, and your only choice is to get comfortable. You look around, your eyes wandering across the painting hung ceiling-to-floor on the walls and wonder how many of them are watching you back. For the minute or so you stand in place, you feel the temperature get somehow lower. Those around you seem to notice the same thing, and the epiphany strikes at once—someone is freezing you into the room.  CHALLENGE: There is a locked door on the opposite wall that is surely your exit. Collaborate with your teammates to find the key inside the paintings before the room freezes over. You only have fifteen or so minutes to leave the room.
ROOM 5 — THE OVEN
SUMMARY: The room you enter with your teammates is an obnoxious white, and the lights seem a little too bright for anyone’s liking. It’s also warm enough to have anyone shedding an extra layer, and the longer you explore the room the hotter it becomes, as if you’re baking alive. The realization hits you all at the same time, but the exit at the end of the room won’t budge. A voice over the speaker above you—was that there before ?—urges you to sacrifice one member to the room.  CHALLENGE: You must decide who will stay behind so the others can escape. If you choose the correct imposter, you may leave the room, thus sacrificing the imposter to the room.
ROOM 6 — THE HOURGLASS
SUMMARY: This room looks relatively average at first—you toddle in a couple of steps, and it doesn’t seem particularly out of the ordinary, save for the junk pile stationed in the corner of the room. You think it might be a prop closet, but when you feel the first trickle of—is that sand ?—sweep over you, there’s suddenly a weight in your gut. The room is filling up with it, and in the center of the junk pile sits an hourglass that dwindles down in sync. You’ll be buried in the next twenty minutes if you don’t find a way to escape. CHALLENGE: You turn to the door you just entered through and realize there’s a keypad you may use to unlock it from the inside. Now all you have to do is find the four-digit code ( and the order in which to input it ) separately hidden in the junk pile to escape. Just don’t take too long.
ROOM 7 — THE BANSHEE
SUMMARY: Nothing seems out of the ordinary in this room, save for the padded walls and the giant, creepy painting of the man of the hour—H.H. Holmes—on the opposite side of the entrance. You get a brief look at the room, the four buttons on the floor, the fine china lining the shelves on the walls, before the room goes dark. The floor trembles beneath your feet, and sure, it’s a little campy with the filtered-in gunfire, but then the sounds get louder, and louder, and louder. You can hardly listen to it without physically wincing, and there’s no doubt the looming possibility of hearing damage, not to mention loss. You can practically feel your eardrums beginning to drip—you have to get out of here. CHALLENGE: You have to escape the room to avoid causing irreparable damage by searching with your teammates in the dark for the buttons you saw earlier. Find all four buttons, then press them simultaneously to pop open the painting, which doubles as an exit. If you don’t get out, someone will get you out, but they’ll be far less welcoming than a few loud noises.
ROOM 8 — THE FLASH
SUMMARY: In this room, all of the empty walls are a stark white, almost hard to look at when you first enter. The lights above your head are bright enough to radiate heat, and you can already see colors swirling in your vision. The floor pulses in a pattern, lighting up red like a guide to the exit on the other side of the room. Before you take the first step, the lights flash brighter, so much so the whole room melts into a blur in front of your eyes. You take a moment to get your bearings, then blink away the moisture spawning at your lash line. When you open your eyes again, the room is back to normal, but the pattern on the floor has changed.  CHALLENGE: You and your teammates must navigate the floor tiles before the room resets. If you simply approach the door, it will remain locked, and the puzzle will simply reset. The longer you’re in this room and exposing yourself to the flashes, the more likely you are to leave with permanent damage to your retinas. Also, you’d better work quickly, because that ticking sound underneath your shoes probably isn’t a good sign.
ROOM 9 — THE CHALICE
SUMMARY: This room, compared to its predecessors, is pretty tame—the four walls are a dark velvet with a golden table in the center. On the table are a set of four chalices, each more ornate than the last. The voice that plays on a loop overhead establishes the rules; choose who will drink from which chalice, but be warned: three of them are poisoned, and only one holds an antidote. Determine who will be sacrificed to which chalice. To escape this room, everyone must take a drink.  CHALLENGE: There’s no way around it—no one is leaving this room until each chalice is sampled. Each member will have to sample their assigned chalice, and only time will tell who has the antidote. There is a possibility of exiting the room alive if the one left standing can evenly portion the antidote.
ROOM 10 — THE EXHALE
SUMMARY: As you enter the room, you instantly recognize the theme of charred remains, with a splintered set of dining chairs and the matching table, peeling wallpaper, and singed curtains decorating the walls that wrap around you. It even smells like smoke in here, and the longer you wander around the still smoking debris, the more saturated the atmosphere becomes. Soon, you and the other occupants of the room begin to cough, and you realize it’s not your imagination that’s making the air thicker—it’s the vent leaking a grey cloud into the room. CHALLENGE: The door at the far end of the room must be opened with a code, and you must find the code scattered among the debris. You’ll find four numbers in total stamped on various items—input the numbers in the correct order to escape the room.
ROOM 11 — THE CLOSURE
SUMMARY: You and your group step through the door into a room bare of anything as far as the eyes can see. After everyone is inside the door locks behind you and the small bits of confetti fall from the ceiling as a warm distraction. You missed the different patterns on the ground of your feet. CHALLENGE: The walls start to close in on your and the group. You notice the door in the opposite direction get crushed as the walls inch closer. You must solve the puzzle to get out of the room before the walls make you a Chicago style pancake.
ROOM 12 — THE DESCENT
SUMMARY: Everything about this room when you and your group enters seems mundane. An old fashioned study is stocked with bookcases against both walls. An old fashioned globe with a mini bar inside of it lays in the center. The door locks behind you, but then you take a glance to the ceiling and notice the sinister sleek metal inching towards you. CHALLENGE: The ceiling in the room starts to lower. You must locate the key to get out of the room in time to not be flattened.
ROOM 13 — THE KEY
SUMMARY: You and your group enter a moderately furnished room. Some small chairs, a small children’s desk, among other mundane objects like pencils and pens. A few books that are on the desk. In the center of the room is where your vision is drawn to a circular crater that holds an overabundance of keys. With a glance you can wager that the key to open the door across from you is within this pit.  CHALLENGE: A ticking above your heads alarms you to the fact that there are wired explosives ahead that are counting down. You must locate the correct key among dozens of faux ones. However, if you take too long the explosives will go off.
ROOM 14 — THE VOLTAGE
SUMMARY: Once you enter the room a soft breeze touches your face. You and your group take notice after the door locks behind you that the room is covered with different paintings of a cloudy sky. Lightning bolts painted on several places in the room scattered from wall to wall. Up above on the ceiling are shapes that seem to have formed grey clouds. All you’re missing is a nice cup of warm drink and a chair to leisure in.  CHALLENGE: At first you feel it, and you hear the zap. Small bits of electricity shoot up your leg, and then it grows worse and worse. As if someone has turned on the electric chair for everyone in the room. You must locate the key to get out of the other door.
ROOM 15 — THE BARBED WIRE
SUMMARY: You and your group enter a room that you would have thought was created in a horror movie flick. From the ceiling to barely above the ground are barbed wire. The door is on the other side that will grant you the way out. That is if the barbed obstacle doesn’t grapple any of you first.  CHALLENGE: You will need to get to the other side of the room through the barbed wires. Then you will be able to exit out the door, but you might want to be mindful not to become a mangled livestock on the conquest to escape.
ROOM 16 — THE ELEVATOR
SUMMARY: You and your group enter what you think is a normal room. However, once the regular door closes it locks. The room itself moves, and you’re presented with an elevator door in front of you. The keypad shows the different levels of the castle to the right, and there’s even a counter on the floors above the locked elevator door in front of everyone.  THE CHALLENGE: The room goes between dropping at an alarming rate to rising upwards quickly. There’s no end in sight no matter what buttons you press on it.  The elevator doesn’t stop on any floors. The group will need to figure out a way to disable the power inside the elevator and escape out the ceiling of it. But be careful it’s a finicky machine.
ROOM 17 — THE TAR
SUMMARY: The darkness captures you and your fellow group members at first. There is a light switch in this room that buzzes a dim cheap light onto the ground. Once everyone shuffles in you notice that the ground you step on is black, thick, and sticky. Black tar coats the ground of the room, and you notice it on the mediocre furniture that adorns it. A makeshift map with pins and faces of H.H. Holmes’s alleged victims are strawn out. You can take a breather or two, but then. THE CHALLENGE: The mechanic clink is heard around the room as panel boards slide apart. Through these panels projectiles are aimed into the room. Arrows & darts fly towards the group. Normally these would be easy to dodge, but you are stuck in place. You must work to get to the exit door on the other side of the room.
ROOM 18 — THE MIRRORS
SUMMARY: You and your fellow group members enter the room, the room is empty of furniture. Visibly on the roof are cogs and attached to them are large thick mirrors. The end isn’t in sight for anyone to see, and the only thing that looks back at you is your multiple reflections. The walls are lost and you swear they’re mirrors themselves. You can’t shake the feeling that you’re being watched. Are these two-way mirrors? CHALLENGE: The mirrors move with each step in a manner as if to smash or crush the opponent. The movements of them are precise and you can almost feel yourself being enclosed into a box of mirrors that gets smaller. The objective is to make it out of the reflective maze in one piece.
ROOM 19 — THE BARBED WIRE
SUMMARY: You and your group enter a room that you would have thought was created in a horror movie flick. From the ceiling to barely above the ground are barbed wire. The door is on the other side that will grant you the way out. That is if the barbed obstacle doesn’t grapple any of you first.  CHALLENGE: You will need to get to the other side of the room through the barbed wires. Then you will be able to exit out the door, but you might want to be mindful not to become a mangled livestock on the conquest to escape.
ROOM 20 — THE CLOSURE
SUMMARY: You and your group step through the door into a room bare of anything as far as the eyes can see. After everyone is inside the door locks behind you and the small bits of confetti fall from the ceiling as a warm distraction. You missed the different patterns on the ground of your feet. CHALLENGE: The walls start to close in on your and the group. You notice the door in the opposite direction get crushed as the walls inch closer. rating the switcheroo names in “life and death”
Carlisle to Carine: 9/10. not as good as Carlisle but damn near perfect. carries the same “gentle vampire doctor” feeling. it’s a very pretty name too, and it doesn’t really matter if it’s accurate to the time period bc who cares about 1640s British names. just glad it’s not Carly.
Esme to Earnest: 4/10. nowhere near as pretty or romantic as Esme. it is era appropriate to when Esme/Earnest was born, and it’s a good father figure name, but still doesn't hold a candle to the original name. not as bad as some of the other switched names, but not as good either.
Alice to Archie: 3/10. uh-uh, nope, not buying it. something about the name Alice just suits the character so well; it’s graceful, fun, beautiful, and cute all at once. Archie just doesn’t live up to the precedent that Alice sets. the one thing I will give the name Archie is that it’s cute, but that's it. Archie the psychic hits wayyy less hard than Alice the psychic. would’ve perhaps been better with Andrew/Andy??
Rosalie to Royal: 8/10. hell yeah, now THAT is what I'm taking about. while Rosalie makes you associate her with bouquets of roses and violets, Royal makes you think of gold crowns and velvet thrones. beauty in a somewhat more masculine way. idk if Royal is historically accurate and you cannot beat the name Rosalie, but still solid.
Jasper to Jessamine: 10/10. I SAID WHAT I SAID. Jessamine is perfect- dated (for 2005) but romantic, appropriate for the era, not too on the nose (like perhaps Jasmine would be). just fits Jasper to a t.
Emmett to Eleanor: 1/10. easily the WORST switched Cullen name!!! it is way too hard to see fun-loving, reckless, play-fighting Emmett get saddled with the sensible name Eleanor!! you had the opportunity to name her Emma and you didn't. fuck you.
Edward to Edythe: 7/10. I will admit I didn’t like her name at first- I'm not a fan of the name Edith. but spelling it as Edythe made it grow on me over time, and nicknaming her Edy is quite cute. just glad it’s not edna.
(Isa)bella to Beau(fort): 7/10. again, Beau had to grow on me a bit. I like that they both have shortened names of their full names. its not as pretty as Bella (and there’s a lot of pretty names for the male characters in twilight) but perhaps Bellamy would’ve been too on the nose for this one as well. bonus points that they both mean “beautiful.”
Jacob to Julie: 5/10. eh not bad but boring. wish we could've had a slightly more interesting name, like maybe Jacqueline (Jackie), Jamie, or even Julia instead of Julie. but still an okay name.
Mike to McKayla: 9/10. perfect. both are basic, white names that lend themselves to their slightly annoying characters. I was gonna suggest changing the spelling to Michaela, but McKayla is too good.
Eric to Erica: 6/10. again, pretty basic but it works. might’ve preferred Erin.
Jessica to Jeremy: 4/10. even though we’re not supposed to like Jessica Stanley, I quite like her name- I think Jessica is a pretty name. Jeremy just doesn't do anything for me, but I can’t think of any decent alternatives either.
Angela to Allen: 2/10. no no no no no!!! if you were gonna be lazy and change any character’s feminine name to its masculine version, it should’ve been Angela. Angelo would have been a much better name for a kind, considerate character like him than Allen.
Lauren to Logan: 8/10. decent.
Tyler to Taylor: 10/10. my name is Taylor, so I will say without any bias that you couldn’t have picked a better name than this one for the beautiful, intelligent, amazingly flawless Taylor Crowley (even tho Tyler is a unisex name and it could've just stayed her name).
Victoria to Victor: 7/10. another obvious one. Victoria is objectively a better name than Victor, but it works, and Victor fits him quite well.
Laurent to Lauren: 6/10. eh. it’s pretty and I like it, but I sort of wish it was Lorraine so that the emphasis fell on the second syllable like Laurent does.
James to Joss: 0/10... you have got to be jossing me. out of all the J names in the world, and you choose that?? joss sounds more the name of a bird than a vampire. the Volturi don’t even factor into life and death, so you could've easily name her Jane without too much confusion. I can look past Allen, but I will not forgive Eleanor and Joss.

Chapter 1 - Reverse Reichenbach Fall
A/N: Starts somewhere between Great Game and Reichenbach
"The mold bomb worked, Sherlock!" Torry yelled up the stairs.
"I told you it would," Came the reply.
"Yes, Sherlock. But it stank up the whole flat for at least 48 hours! We had to sleep in a hotel!" Erin yelled from the doorway of 221C.
"I did not mind that as much as I thought I would. The pool was quite nice," John added in as he walked downstairs.
"You're supposed to be on my side, darling," Erin spoke sarcastically through a fake smile.
"Of course, love," He replied, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. "I need to run an errand to the hospital quickly. I'll be back as fast as I can."
"I'll come with you!" Sherlock announced. Running down the stairs, he swished on his trusty Belfast and swooped into 221C. "See you tonight at Angelo's," He said, giving Torry a quick peck on her cheek as well before heading out.
"It's still so weird seeing him act so," Erin paused. "So human! You and John have given him good training."
"Like you haven't told him all about my habits and secrets," Torry retorted. Both girls chuckled before getting back to cleaning their now mold-free flat. "I'm worried about Sherlock. Something's wrong," She said. "After the trial, I thought we would hear from Moriarty right away. What is that psycho playing at?"
*Knock knock knock*
"Expecting anyone?" Erin asked. Torry shook her head. Before either could reach the door, the lock was picked and the door swung open.
"I don't usually knock, but I thought 'what the heck! Why not!'"
"Moriarty!" They both exclaimed. "What do you want?" Erin queried. Moriarty just grinned and helped himself to a seat as the girls stood and watched his every move. He looked at the bowl of fruit on the coffee table and then looked at them questioningly.
"Help yourself," Torry deadpanned. Quickly flipping out his knife, Moriarty stabbed the apple and stared at it.
"Please, don't stand on my account." Erin and Torry slowly made their way to the armchairs across the couch Moriarty sat on. As they sat, Moriarty continued, "I know John's told you about the pool." Moriarty laughed, all too pleased with himself. "I promised Sherlock I'd burn the heart out of him. We have so much fun playing together. But I'm getting bored again!" He sing-songed. "Daddy needs more players in the game," He said, darkness overshadowing his features. "I'll burn the hearts out of you too. And your precious Johnny." He had been fiddling with the apple as he talked. Suddenly he took a large bite out of it and stabbed the knife into the table with the apple. "I O U," read the fruit. Moriarty, in one swift motion, was back at the door. "And if you even dream of telling anyone of this meeting," He spoke, eyes glinting with dark glee. "Your fall will come sooner than you think."
A few minutes later, after checking for bugs and cameras, Torry and Erin were discussing what to do. "Mycroft," Erin declared. "The 2nd time Mycroft, erm, took us for a ride in a mysterious black car. Remember what he said?"
"If we ever needed help, if we were truly in trouble, we could come to him."
"Today is that day. We need to make a plan and I think I know what to do."
"No," Torry said. "He's not concerned about this. We need to figure this out on our own."
"We can't finish this alone. Besides, I think he is concerned." Pausing, Erin thought over her next words. "And I'm willing to bet my life on it."
"Alright," Torry conceded. "Let's head out."
Somehow, Sherlock had not deduced something was wrong with their girls over dinner. That night was tense but they managed. A few weeks later, Moriarty's damage had nearly reached its peak.
"Dust is eloquent," Sherlock stated one particular afternoon. Mrs. Hudson had come upstairs and the 5 residents of 221 Baker St. were all currently in the living room of 221B.
"What’s he on about?" Mrs. Hudson asked quietly. Everyone else shook their heads. By now Sherlock was climbing on the furniture to look more closely at the top shelves of the bookcase to the left of the fireplace.
"Cameras. We’re being watched," He announced.
"What? Cameras?" Mrs. Hudson exclaimed with a cringe. "Here? I’m in my nightie!" The doorbell rings and she hurries out of the room, John following her. Torry and Erin stay behind, watching Sherlock look for the camera. Sherlock climbs down and checks in the eye sockets of the skull on the mantelpiece before climbing onto small tables on the other side of the fireplace to look at the bookshelves there. Checking the books on the top shelf, he realizes that the one on the far right has more movement around it than it ought and he pushes it deeper into the shelf, revealing a camera stuck to the side of the bookshelf. As he reaches up to remove it, Greg comes into the room followed by John.
Without turning around, still concentrating on removing the camera, Sherlock says, "No, Inspector."
"What?" Greg, John, Erin, and Torry say in unison.
"The answer’s no," Sherlock repeats, stepping down with the camera in his fingers.
"But you haven’t heard the question!" Lestrade exclaims.
"You want to take me to the station. Just saving you the trouble of asking."
"Sherlock," the inspector trails off.
"The scream?"
"Yeah."
"Who was it? Donovan? I bet it was Donovan. Am I somehow responsible for the kidnapping? Ah, Moriarty is smart. He planted that doubt in her head; that little nagging sensation. You’re going to have to be strong to resist. You can’t kill an idea, can you? Not once it’s made a home there," Sherlock replied, tapping Lestrade's forehead.
"Will you come?" He asks hopefully.
"One photograph," Sherlock begins. "That’s his next move. Moriarty’s game: first the scream, then a photograph of me being taken in for questioning. He wants to destroy me inch by inch." He holds the camera up for Greg and the rest to see. "It's a game, Lestrade, and not one I’m willing to play. Give my regards to Sergeant Donovan." Sighing and exchanging brief looks with John, and the girls, Greg turns and heads off down the stairs. "They’ll be deciding," Sherlock says a few moments later. He noticed Torry watching Greg leave with Sally. She looked at him and then Erin with a desperate expression, one Sherlock didn't quite understand.
"Deciding?" John asked, confused.
"Whether to come back with a warrant and arrest me."
"Do you think they will?" Torry asks.
"Standard procedure," He replies sadly.
"Should have gone with him. People’ll think-" John starts.
"I don’t care what people think."
"You'd care if they thought you were stupid, or wrong. You'd care about it was Torry they were blaming." Sherlock paused for a moment. He looked at the woman he'd somehow managed to fall in love with and couldn't read her. She'd been only the 2nd person in his life that he couldn't read immediately. She seemed to have a sad, yet almost guilty look on her face. She tried for a smile for Sherlock and the corner of his mouth quirked up.
"That would just make them stupid or wrong. Torry would never do such horrible things," He said lightly. Then in a sad whisper, he added, "She doesn't have it in her." He stopped there, leaving an unspoken 'But obviously I do' written on his face.
"Sherlock, I don’t want the world believing you’re-" John stops mid-sentence.
"That I am what?" Sherlock says, voice barely audible.
"A fraud." A look of hurt passed over Sherlock's face but it quickly turned to anger.
"You’re worried they’re right," He yelled.
"What?"
"You’re worried they’re right about me."
"No, Sherlock! Don't be daft."
"That’s why you’re so upset. You can’t even entertain the possibility that they might be right. You’re afraid that you’ve been taken in as well."
"No, I’m not."
"Moriarty is playing with your mind too." Sherlock angrily slams his hand down on the table. "Can’t you see what’s going on?" He screamed desperately.
"No, I know you’re for real."
"Me too," Torry said.
"Me three," Erin added with a small chuckle.
"A hundred percent?" Sherlock asks warily. "How?"
John smiles and looks at the two girls they both had gotten so close to over the past months. "Well, nobody could fake being such an annoying dick-"
"Tit," Torry adds.
"And prat," said Erin
"All the time," the three finished together. Sherlock locks eyes with each of them, before turning away, a smile threatening to show on his lips.
True to Sherlock's word they came back to arrest him. After some yelling from John, Erin, Torry, and Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock has been arrested. The officers take him to the street and lean him against the side of a police car, facing it. A minute or two later, the Chief Superintendent walks out onto the street holding a handkerchief to his bleeding nose.
"Are you alright, sir?" A nearby officer asks him. Sherlock turns his head to see what happened but suddenly John is slammed up against the car next to him and to his left. John is quickly followed by Erin and Torry being cuffed on the opposite side of the car Sherlock looks to each of them with an amused expression on his face.
"Joining me?" He asks.
"Yeah. Apparently it’s against the law to chin the Chief Superintendent," John says.
"And Donovan," Torry comments.
"And Lestrade. Still feeling a bit guilty about that one but he was being a right tosser!” Erin exclaimed. The four of them can't help but laugh, albeit quietly. Behind them, a couple of armed officers unlock the cuff on Sherlock’s right hand and transfer it to John’s right wrist, chaining the boys together. The officers do the same to Torry and Erin. Sherlock looks over his shoulder, watching what the officers are doing and where they’re standing.
"Hmm. Bit awkward, this," Sherlock notes.
"Yep. No-one to bail us out this time." Torry says.
"I was thinking more about our imminent and daring escape," Sherlock said. He looks down at the radio lying on the dashboard of the car they’re leaning against. The radio squeals as the dispatcher speaks.
"Oh flippity gibbet," Torry grumbled, realizing Sherlock's plan. She made eye contact with him and nodded so slightly it was nearly imperceptible. "Hold on," She whispered to Erin. Rapidly, Sherlock reaches through the open window of the car with his free hand and presses down on the Talk button. Instantly, the officers behind the boys and girls double over in pain and grab at their earpieces when a high-pitched squeal of feedback rips through it. Sherlock reaches behind him and pulls the officer’s pistol free, instantly raising it. Torry mirrors his actions perfectly. Both Erin and John are taken completely by surprise. Sherlock calls out as he aims the pistol towards the nearest officers.
"Ladies and gentlemen, will you all please get on your knees?" Sherlock yells. When nobody reacts very quickly, Torry raises her gun skywards and fires it twice.
"Now would be good!" She yells. They lower their guns and point them at the police again.
"Do as they say!" Lestrade orders.
"Just-just so you’re aware, the guns are their idea," John calls out loudly.
"We're just, uh, you know," Erin stutters. Both Sherlock and Torry promptly turn the guns to aim at their handcuffed friends.
"Our hostages," Torry yells, rather proud of herself.
"Hostage! Yes, that works. Of course, that works!" Erin and John sarcastically hiss through grinding teeth. After a minute or so of running, Sherlock grabs John's hand to run together easier.
"Having a moment there, boys?" Erin teases.
"That's not a bad idea," Torry smirks, taking Erin's hand.
"Oh, now people will definitely talk!" John jokes.
Later that night, after the whole confrontation with Moriarty, or rather, Richard Brook, John asks Sherlock, "Can he do that? Completely change his identity; make you the criminal?"
"He’s got my whole life story. That’s what you do when you sell a big lie; you wrap it up in the truth to make it more palatable."
"Your word against his," John says hopefully.
Sherlock just shakes his head. Torry pipes up, figuring it out at the same time as Sherlock. "He’s been sowing doubt into people’s minds for the last twenty-four hours. There’s only one thing he needs to do to complete his game, and that’s to-" She stops dead and looks at Erin knowingly. John, who has been rifling through the folder, looks up at them.
"Erin? Torry? Sherlock? Someone? What is it?"
"Something we need to do," Erin sighed.
"What is it? Can I help?" John offers. Erin chuckles and walks up to him.
"Not this time, darling. Torry and I had better be going. Will you be able to get home alright?"
"Yeah," John replied. "Are you sure we can't help?" He asks again. Erin nods and pulls him in for a desperate kiss. A minute later they break apart.
"John, no matter what, remember I'll always love you. And I will never, you hear me? Never leave you," She insisted, voice cracking slightly with tears held back. John nods, very confused.
"I love you too, dear. And I never want you to leave."
"Well, at least I won't have to worry about all those women going after you anymore," Torry told Sherlock. He smirked.
"I could say the same for you. It was getting awful tiring to keep all those Yarders away from you," Sherlock said. Torry laughed and smiled at Sherlock. He smiled at her in return but she could tell he was still confused about what they were doing. She felt tears threatening to make an appearance so she gave Sherlock a hug, burying her face in his shirt. "What brought this on?" He asked a bit worried.
"Sentiment, I guess," she replied with a dry chuckle. "Dinner at Angelo's when we return?" She whispered. She felt him nod and hugged him tighter.
"Torry," Erin said, a hint of nervousness in her voice. "We'd better get going." Torry nodded and looked at Sherlock one more time.
"I love you, ya big goofball," She said smiling.
"I love you too, my dear dork," He replied, using a nickname he'd learned from her. With that, Torry and Erin left. "Something's wrong, John. But I just don't know what it is," Sherlock said. "I hope they're alright," He added under his breath. John nodded and put his hand on his friend's shoulder.
"Me too, Sherlock. Me too."
"You idiot!" Erin yelled at Mycroft, hours later at the Diogenes Club. "You told him every bloody thing you knew about your precious brother!" She sneered. "If we didn't need you so much to make this work, I'd leave right now!"
"Please keep your voice down, Miss Erin," Mycroft seethed. "Now, I have set everything up. The only thing left to do before we go through with it is to deliver these instructions to Miss Hooper." He held out a manila envelope and Torry grabbed it.
"Come on, Erin. We need to finish this as quickly as possible." They both left without another word to Mycroft.
"It's all there, Molly. Can you do it?" Erin asked the young lady.
"Yes, I have everything we need. I know this sounds counterintuitive but, be careful." She smiled at them. "You know I liked Sherlock. He's still a good man but I'm past that phase now. This will undoubtedly hurt him so please go as fast as you can. We can't leave him like that for too long."
"I wish there was another way," Torry said. The air was heavy with tension. "Let's get ready, Erin. Send the text."
Come and play.
Bart's Hospital rooftop.
-EB
"It's done," Erin said. "Now for the call." She called John through a voice filtering app. "Mr. Watson?"
"Yeah, speaking."
"You're needed at the hospital. A woman named, Mrs. Hudson, is requesting your presence. She's in critical condition. Please come in through the main entrance and an orderly will take you to her."
"What happened? Is she okay?" He exclaimed. The line goes dead though.
"What is it?" Sherlock asks.
"Mrs. Hudson – she’s in critical condition. We need to go to the hospital."
"What? How?"
"I don't know!" John said frantically. "Come on!" The two immediately ran out to hail a taxi for the hospital.
"We can still prove that you created an entirely false identity," Torry said calmly.
"Oh, just kill yourself. It’s a lot less effort!" Moriarty drawls. Erin circled him, occasionally making eye contact with Torry but neither of them had found an alternate solution yet. "Go on. For me," Moriarty continues. "Pleeeeease?" He squeals.
"You’re insane," Erin seethes, whipping around and holding the man over the edge of the building by his collar.
"You’re just getting that now?" Erin pushes him over even more. Torry takes his legs so his balance is thrown off. "Okay, let me give you a little extra incentive." The girls frown. "Your friends will die if you don’t," Moriarty says darkly.
"Sherlock," Torry whispers, fear washing over her face. She drops Moriarty's legs back onto the rooftop.
"John," Erin says, mirroring Torry. She lets Moriarty stand back up. He grins maniacally.
"Not just your precious boyfriends," He speaks with glee. "Everyone."
"Mrs. Hudson?" Torry hazards.
"Everyone!" Moriarty exclaims with a delighted smile. "Even that annoying little inspector you like so much."
"Lestrade," Erin says.
"Four bullets; four gunmen; four victims. There’s no stopping them now. Unless my people see you jump." Both girls seem to be frozen in shock and horror. And Moriarty couldn't be happier. "You can have me arrested; you can torture me; you can do anything you like with me; but nothing’s gonna prevent them from pulling the trigger. Your friends will die," He trails off. "Unless-"
"Unless we jump therefore poetically killing Sherlock," Torry finishes.
"You’ve gotta admit that’s sexier," Moriarty exclaims, eyes closed, grinning, already basking in success.
"And he 'dies' in disgrace."
"Never to be heard of again," Moriarty sighs happily. "Maybe he'll even kill himself so he can join you!"
"You -" Torry starts, lunging at Moriarty. Erin stops her, pulling her back.
"Fine," Erin states, stepping up on the ledge. She holds her hand out to Torry, who takes it and steps up alongside her. Moriarty slowly walks to the other side of the roof.
"Oh, and just so you know," He says, back still turned to them. "There is another way to call them off. A passcode that only I know. Too bad." In rapid succession he turns around, raises his eyes to meet theirs, grins maniacally, opens his mouth wide and pulls out a pistol, sticking the muzzle into his mouth. He pulls the trigger and drops to the roof instantly. Torry and Erin stare in horror as blood begins to trickle across the roof underneath Jim’s head. Jim’s eyes are fixed and open and there is a smile of victory on his face.
"We're stuck."
Just as Sherlock and John were getting out of the taxi in front of the hospital, John's phone rang again. "Erin!" He answered, seeing the caller ID. "Mrs. Hudson's in the hospital, we're heading in now. Can you meet us?" He said worriedly.
"Mrs. Hudson is fine, John," Erin spoke into the phone, voice shaking.
"Erin, love, you okay?"
"Turn around and walk back the way you came now," She orders.
"What's going on?" He demands. Sherlock is listening in on the phone call, both men now standing back on the sidewalk.
"Sherlock, please look up," Torry asks, sharing the phone with Erin.
"No," Sherlock whispers at the sight of both girls standing on the edge. "Oh God no!" He yells. John looks up too, speechless.
"We can’t come down," Erin says, tears already coating her cheeks. "So we’ll just have to do it like this."
"What’s going on?" John asks anxiously.
"An apology," Erin says.
"Wh-what?" John stammers.
"Everything they said about Sherlock, we supplied. We invented Moriarty," Torry says.
"Why are you saying this? That's not true," Sherlock yells.
"I want you to tell Lestrade; I want you to tell Mrs. Hudson, and Molly. In fact, tell anyone who will listen to you that we created Moriarty for our own purposes," Torry says, voice cracking nearly every other word.
"We're sorry, Sherlock. And it's over now."
"Okay, shut up, Erin, shut up. You too, Torry," John says. "That-that's impossible. How-why-"
"Nobody could be that clever," Sherlock says. "You're both brilliant but you couldn't have come up with this ruse."
"Don't be so sure," Erin says chuckling dryly.
"We researched you. Before we met we discovered everything that we could to get under your skin, into your mind," Torry says.
"It’s a trick. Just a magic trick," Erin says. John has his eyes closed and is shaking his head repeatedly.
"No. All right, stop it now," He begs, starting to walk towards the hospital entrance.
"No, stay exactly where you are. Don’t move!" Erin orders. John stops and backs up, holding up his hand
"All right."
"Keep your eyes fixed on us," Torry demands. "Please, will you do this for us?"
"Do what?" Sherlock asks suspiciously and nervously.
"This phone call. It’s, erm, it’s our note. It’s what people do, don’t they? Leave a note?"
"Leave a note when?" John asks. But Sherlock already knows.
"Goodbye, John," Erin says.
"Goodbye, Sherlock," Torry says before taking the phone and throwing it down onto the roof behind them.
"No. Don’t," John begs to no one in particular. Sherlock is whispering the same thing almost as a mantra. Torry and Erin look at each other, hold hands, spread their arms to either side and fall forward, plummeting towards the ground.
"Erin!"
"Torry!"
Days later the two men have barely done anything other than drinking a cup of tea. Even then, they're doing good to struggle through one cup a day. Mrs. Hudson walks up the stairs softly, walking into 221B with a tray of tea and biscuits. "Do try to eat something before we go. And a shower?" She asks. John nods and mumbles something. No one says a word as the three ride to the cemetery later that afternoon. They walk to the two matching headstones slowly. Mrs. Hudson sets down two bouquets she bought and pats her boys on their shoulders. "I'll leave you two for a private moment," she whispers sympathetically.
"You-" Sherlock chokes out, voice breaking off. "You were the first person I ever truly loved," He says, voice wobbling. "Romantically at least," he teases, putting his arm around John, who lets out a cut-off sob.
"And you were the only other person in this world that I thought would ever want put up with the broken man I am," John says. "Well, other than Sherlock."
"Please, love," Sherlock begs. "Please do something for us-" He stops, unable to go on.
"Please, darling," John continues for him. "Please stop this."
"Please don't be dead," they say together. Both begin to silently cry, eventually allowing themselves to lean on each other for both physical and emotional support.
"See you soon, Erin," John says before turning to walk back to the cab.
"See you at Angelo's," Sherlock whispers.
Nearby behind a large oak tree, both girls stand, wiping away their own tears at hearing every word.
"We can do this. We need to. For them."
"Come on. Let's get this over with."
