Out for a walk to enjoy some sun and to overcome restlessness,

A flower fell to my feet

A blossom from my neighbor's Datura plant.

A delicate, supple orange yellow flower that closed up tight when hung from its stem, and unfurled to a broad five pointed star when held upright. The petals shaded from orange at the edges to green at the center, where it surrounded the sturdy pistil.

Today was this flower's very last day in full display. I picked it up, marvelling at how soft and pliable it was. The flower fit the palm of my hand well.

I considered, briefly but thoroughly, the potential risks of carrying a flower in my hand on a long walk that passed through a major transit point and a second, rough-ish neighborhood. Not only the risk of dropping or damaging the flower. Not only the risk of being jostled at a busy intersection. Also the risks to my person, if any. An older, obviously queer, male carrying a single flower, in his hand -- not gift wrapped. I mentally calculated the risk someone might take an unhealthy interest in me or the flower, and decided I was among the least colourful or noteworthy passers-by in any neighborhood I'd be passing through.

And so I continued my late afternoon walk with the beautiful Datura flower grasped carefully in my hand.

The only folks who noticed the flower, they all smiled and searched for my eyes. I smiled back and nodded. We passed each other, walking in different directions, a goal in our minds eyes, but for a moment, we shared the wonder of the ephemeral, precious, rare, beauty of desert flowers.

Brugmansia suaveolens, also known as Angel's Trumpet, is a plant in the nightshade family Solanaceae, native to south eastern Brazil, but thought to be extinct in the wild. The long, trumpet-shaped flowers are remarkably beautiful and sweetly fragrant. They are usually white but may be yellow or pink and hang downward.

Queen Brugmansia was repotted after sprouting in water since Dec 24 New Moon. I repotted between Full Moon and Last Quarter, On Jan 10.

She had the cutest little rootlets and now she grows roots under the Waning Influence.

Her mom is The Queen of The Street.
