Staff Pick of the Week / Science Saturday
My staff pick is A Treatise on the Artificial Propagation of Fish, with the Description and Habits of Such Kinds as are the Most Suitable for Pisciculture by Theodatus Garlick (1805-1884), published by A.O. Moore, New York, 1858.
Theodatus Garlick was a surgeon of diverse accomplishments who spent much of his life in Ohio. He developed new procedures in plastic surgery, and is noted for performing one of the most difficult and most successful facial reconstructions of his time. He invented new instruments for operations in amputation, trepanning (drilling into the skull), and obstetrics. Garlick was the first to take a daguerreotype photograph in Cleveland Ohio with a camera he made following Daguerre's, and he is also noted for taking the first photograph without direct light, in the shade.
In 1853, Garlick was the first to successfully artificially fertilize trout eggs and built the first fish hatchery in the United States, his work and research became an invaluable resource to the fish farming industry in the United States. Garlick first wrote these papers for The Ohio Farmer, a Cleveland Newspaper "devoted to the improvement and betterment of the farmer, his family, and farm." Before him there was no work on fish culture which focused on native species. This work includes descriptions of American fishes and their habitats as well as detailed descriptions for artificial propagation, and the appropriate kinds of water for each fish. His works are first compiled and published here by A. O. Moore, an agricultural book publisher.
The book has a very detailed embossed cover. The wood engravings are so finely detailed I could hardly tell how they were made. The wood engravings are likely printed from stereotype, metal reproductions of the original wooden matrix, a common practice in 19th century commercial printing.
Garlick was also a highly skilled artist. He created many sculpted portraits of his colleagues and medical professionals, as well as judges and politicians. If he were not so dedicated to the sciences he may have become a very successful and well known artist.

The Almaco Jack, also known as a longfin yellowtail, a silver coat jack or a highfin amberjack is a fish closely related to the Greater and lesser Amberjacks, reaching a midpoint in size between the two of them, with the biggest recorded Almaco being just over 130 lbs. or just under 60 kg. with most specimens being seen at anywhere from 5-25 pounds, rarely exceeding those sizes except in rare conditions, similar to Amberjacks. These species, while common in and around the gulf of Mexico and Atlantic ocean, can also be caught in the Pacific ocean, with both the largest recorded specimen of GAJ's and AlJ's being recorded along the Japanese coast. These fish are a fun, hard fight from an angling standpoint, with most anglers slow pitch jigging or bottom fishing to catch or hook these beautiful fish. Commonly found in deeper coastal waters, with larger schools congregating around wrecks or reefs. The Almaco Jack can be distinguished from the GAJ by the tall dorsal fin, and the shorter, less torpedo shaped body. On the other fin, GAJ's are known for being so hard to target because they are very hydrodynamic, with low fins and minimum shape changes, along with being a favorite target of sharks such as bull sharks or blacktip sharks.

Amberjacks typically have a broader stripe that starts after the eye, whereas Almacojacks have a stripe that is on both sides of the eye.
It's not even funny how hard it is to find pictures of GAJs without old white men holding them.

Typography Tuesday
Last week, as part of a gift, we received a 1914 copy of Days in the Open by American clergyman and angler Lathan A. Crandall with decorations by the English-born American illustrator Louis Rhead, published in New York and Chicago by the Christian publishing firm Fleming H. Revell Company. We were taken not only by Rhead’s Art Nouveau decorations and illustrations for this volume, but also by how he turned ordinary chapter-opening initial letters into Art Nouveau historiated initials through the use of five different cuts combined with the letters.
Louis Rhead was a prolific designer and illustrator who came from a family of prominent English potters and artists. He was initially trained in art by his father and then in Paris by the neoclassical French artist Gustave Boulanger. When he emigrated to the US at the age of 24, however, he became deeply influenced by the work of Swiss Art Nouveau decorative artist Eugène Grasset. In America, Rhead also became an avid angler, and much of his work after 1900 often involved angling art, as in this publication. Rhead even died in the pursuit of his avocation, dying of a heart attack soon after hooking and then struggling to remove a 30-pound turtle that had been devastating his trout ponds. Now, that’s devotion!
