In the spring of 1972, my fourth-grade* homeroom teacher asked me to clean out a cupboard in our classroom. One of the things I found there was a textbook on modern British history ("modern" meaning since 1066). It contained, among other things, a smallish black-and-white photograph of a young woman who was, it seemed, the current monarch.

Even then, I knew to check the copyright page to find out how old the book was. It turned out to have been published in 1957, so the photograph was obviously out of date. What was a 15-year-old British textbook doing lying around at a fancy private school in Chicago? I don't know (and it actually wasn't all that fancy, just for the record), but the point is that it it dawned on me that millions of people were looking to a young woman as, if not the leader, then at least a leader of their country.

And that may have been the moment, even after all of those books purchased from Blackwell's, when I became an Anglophile — and a fairly old-fashioned one, I might add.

So this is a sad moment for me. My deepest sympathies to you all.
