@shadowen so you asked about music I listen to. In meme format, anyway.

I've been trying to find a waltz that makes me want to dance, other than Take This Waltz, which has meant a fair bit of wedding choreography on YouTube. Still looking for suggestions here!

I'm also writing a musician, so there's a fair bit of folk going round my head, which usually means Kate Rusby. (I love William and Davy, they're so silly and sweet and useless.) I'll probably be veering off into Child ballads soon because of vocal ranges, and there's always my playlist for Ellen Kushner's Thomas the Rhymer. I'm tempted to filk Mr Cody by the Honeycutters into the fic too (which may be relevant to @icryyoumercy's interests).

Side note, if you're interested in wlw artists, you should ask @spiritintheteapot. I was quite enchanted with O'Hooley and Tidow.

Once a week, until Hyacinth cozens me into succumbing on Wednesdays and Fridays, I play capoeira music, which does not sound like this and does sound like this.

There's usually some background level of Mountain Goats.

And I just picked up my music for orchestra this fall, which includes a lot of pops, but I'm quite taken with Palladio. We almost played it last year, and I took it with me to Iceland and played it on top of Rauðaskriður, which was incredible fun.

LOL This is how I do self-portraits. It’s a composite of me spinning, then doing a cartwheel, and then ending in the “pose” that we’ll call “queda de tres” or even “queda de rins” as movements in capoeira. I also had an assistant taking pics, they were VERY nervous. “Just take pics”!

Interview of the Month | Treinel Madeira ~ Mão No Chão

This month we introduce you to Treinel Madeira (Siobhann McCafferty) who leads the Capoeira Angola group ‘Mão No Chão’ in Brisbane, QLD. Significantly, this is also our first interview with a female Capoeirista, something which needs to change, as we strive to represent all aspects and truths within this art form. Read on for some of her insightful thoughts on Capoeira, breaking down stereotypes and the future of the Capoeira community here in Australia.

CH: How did your Capoeira journey begin?

TM: I first saw capoeira when I lived in Wellington and my housemate trained with Mestre Brabo's group Caoeira Mandinga Aotearoa in the late 90's early 2000s (http://www.capoeira.org.nz/). I was intrigued by the music and movements I saw and when I moved to Scotland I thought it was an ideal time to take up a new hobby and searched for some capoeira.

In Scotland I initially found Group Senzala in Glasgow and trained with them for perhaps 6 months, and then with their Edinburgh branch when I moved cities. After training one night someone mentioned the Capoeira Angola group that trained in the same space and I was curious to see what they were all about so I started to attend Mão No Chão classes also.

Those first few classes were a massive challenge, and I was very much out of my comfort zone - to move, to play, to sing! But, it was beautiful and I also felt very welcome and supported by the group, so I kept coming back and eventually started to train only Capoeira Angola under my teacher, Contra Mestre Dion.

CH: What brought you to Australia?

TM: I moved when the economy collapsed in the UK in 2008. My partner at the time got a job in Australia, and it was also an opportunity to be closer to my family in New Zealand so I moved, and I've been here ever since. Its a lot warmer than Scotland!

CH: What made you choose to teach Capoeira in Australia?

TM: When I arrived in Brisbane I searched for a Capoeira Angola group, but sadly their classes had stopped so I began to train with the Brisbane branch of Cordao de Ouro taught by Mestre Eurico (who is now based in Northern New South Wales) and his students. I spent a year training with Cordao de Ouro and helping take classes also, so I learned a huge amount about teaching and met some wonderful mentors and friends.

Eventually though, I began to feel that I wanted to just focus on Capoeira Angola and pass on the philosophy and style that I had learned with Mão No Chão in Scotland. So I talked with CM Dion and started to teach regular classes under his direction.

CH: What challenges have you faced teaching Capoeira in Australia?

TM: For me the biggest challenges are alway in the self - challenges of confidence, time... Outside of that though, one of the biggest challenges for me has been distance. I'm far away from my teacher and other branches of my group and I miss that community greatly. I'm very grateful for the internet to keep in touch with them!

There is also the distance of Capoeira Angola in Australia, though this is getting much better as the community grows and make strong connections. Five years ago though, when I started teaching, there weren't the connections that we have now. I'm thankful here for the work of Mestre Roxinho in Sydney in connecting up Angoleiros around the country and starting the Annual Australasian Angola Encounter which we were lucky to host last year. Another challenge has been experiencing machismo and gender stereotyping. These attitudes are a real barrier to equality in capoeira and it can go unchallenged by people who assume that it is simply part of the culture of capoeira. But, it’s not and for me I believe that capoeira has within it the seeds of liberation and equality, so its absolutely a part of my job as a Capoeirista and teacher to challenge sexism, ageism, gender stereotyping and oppression of any kind.

CH: How do you imagine capoeira will evolve in Australia in the future?

TM: I think as more people come to Australia and there is more travel we will see capoeira continue to spread and cooperative models develop for teaching and playing. I can see a really nice model emerging of a capoeira community where people share spaces and have open rodas.

There will always be a space for groups and traditional models of learning, but they are also changing in reaction to the internet and greater connectivity. So I see that opening up as really positive.

CH: How would you sum up your philosophy or approach to Capoeira?

TM: I think at its core, capoeira demands of you to be vulnerable in yourself and to connect with your camaradas and community deeply.

In the jogo, we react and create, we sing and respond - It is profoundly cooperative and also completely unpredictable. So, be flexible and open in your game and life, and try and dance with grace through both.

Always offer, never expect, always have a song to sing back...

Hyacinth is coming to visit in two weeks

I’m going to bring him to a capoeira roda, but I haven’t told anyone at capoeira that I’m dating him

I’m going to have so much fun with this

First because Hyacinth doesn’t play regional, so I can introduce him as a rank beginner, and then he can HULK SMASH (by which I mean sort of Ranma-dodge everything, because Hyacinth plays like a clown-fish)

Second because I will get to explain to Süß, and he’s going to be so offended, and he’s a theater kid, and I keep making up conversations in my head about how he will complain about why he wasn’t told and I will say it’s his fault, he didn’t tell me that angoleiros são mas bonita que jogadores de regional
