no because people say gilear is the worst dad in fantasy high as if he doesnt apologize to fig in the first episode of fantasy high for saying things he didnt mean and only said out of anger and shock. yes, he was absolutely in the wrong for that, but he spends the entire run of both seasons of fantasy high trying to make it up to fig and in the end, TELLS FIG he wants to be better FOR HER and she’s so appreciative of it! they literally reconcile and have a good relationship at the end of sophomore year.
meanwhile, on the tip of the iceberg, angwyn constantly pits the abernant sisters against each other, he tortures aelwyn by not letting her trance for a year and breaking her mind from exhaustion, tried brainwashing adaine to be the perfect daughter and oracle, and ultimately tried to kill both of them when they didn’t comply??? i’d venture to say he’s the fucking worst, wouldn’t you??
i just don’t get why fans are so needlessly mean about gilear when his whole character is just being Some Guy that keeps getting thrown into insane situations (but he helps anyway!) and his whole entire arc is him trying to better himself, which he DOES.

Personal Ranking of the Fantasy High Dads, From Worst to Best:
Angwyn Penguin Abernant: -100000/10. He's somehow both controlling and neglectful, elitist beyond belief, power-hungry and cruel, and doesn't see his daughters as anything other than tools and means to an end. Adaine killing him in one hit was one of the most satisfying moments in Dimension 20 history.
Mac Applebees: 0/10. He and Donna did clearly care about Kristen, but that was clearly conditional and all of those points are subtracted on account of him being racist and members of a conservative religious cult. And if Bucky is any indication, those parenting skills have not improved.
Bill Seacaster: 4.5/10. Absolute madlad? Yes. Chaotic king? Yes. A joy to witness whenever he appears? Yes. But despite the fact that he clearly loves Fabian, he piled on a lot of unreasonable expectations and didn't fully prepare him for the world... and he clearly had several bastard children who we know absolutely nothing about. He does get points for being totally cool with Fabian being a bard, though.
Arthur Aguefort: 5/10. Again, in the same realm as Bill---a chaotic madlad who's a joy to watch, but his parenting skills do leave something to be desired. He does get points for clearly caring deeply about his students and Ayda, as well as attempting to reconnect with her again, but he's got some ways to go.
Gorbag Last-Name-Unknown: 6/10. We don't know enough about him for me to give him a fair ranking, and he did become a dad at, like, fifteen. But it does mean a lot that he found Gorgug again and is clearly an active presence in his life.
Gorthalax The Insatiable: 7/10. Clearly a good dad to Fig, loves her like crazy, the chillest and nicest devil you'll ever meet. Does have a bad habit of getting trapped in rubies, but still. Great guy all around.
Pok Gukgak: 7.3/10. If he hadn't died before the show started, and if he'd gotten to be present in Riz's life, he'd get ranked higher due to us having more data. As it stands, though, he's a badass secret agent angel who supports and loves his son, and he even accepts Riz's sexuality, which is a win in my book.
Gilear Faeth: 7.9/10. Being a dad is literally the only thing he's actually good at, and it shows. Does get a point taken off for getting engaged and going on a cruise without telling Fig, but we'll find out more about that in a few days. There's probably an explanation.
Digby Thistlespring: 9/10. Loving, sweet, supportive, sex-positive---what's not to love about him, he's a great dad! Sure, he does do the parent thing of embarrassing Gorgug at times, and he and Wilma both clearly still need to work on understanding that their son needs to express his anger, but he does a great job.
Jawbone O'Shaugnessy: 11/10. My guy. He went from being a random NPC that Brennan named on the spot to being a central character in the whole damn narrative, and he shines. The fact that he's been through the ringer means that he gives out the best advice, and the man is one of the most supportive and caring dads in existence.

i'm not sure i get what the norm is for death mechanics in spyre ?? like when mr gibbons, doreen and johnny spells died, no one thought to revivify them and they were just buried, no questions asked (even when johnny spells' death circumstances were blurry !!)... also adaine just killed her dad and left him there and we don't know what happened to his body...? but when yolanda and lucy were found, even though they had runes on them that prevented them from being raised, they somehow got several people working on reviving them : is it because they were murdered by unknown attackers and it's an open police case ? is it just that the others were not relevant enough to the plot that brennan took the time to wrap their loose ends ?

thinking about how in freshman year coach daybreak quite literally tried to kill kristen to bring the apocalypse (AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS) and upon being told this her own parents turned their back on kristen and said (paraphrasing), “thats not true and you cant prove that.”
thinking about junior year where kristen’s parents SAY shes always welcome to come back anytime and in an effort to keep the peace she says “thank you, thats very kind” HER OWN PARENTS!! ITS NOT KIND, ITS THE BARE MINIMUM! but mac and donna will never see it that way, because to them they didnt fail kristen, she failed them.
ALSO thinking about adaine’s parents who so obviously had no real love for adaine until she had use as elven oracle. and even then it wasnt love, it was a power grab. parents who start a war and leave without you. parents who only cared about power to the extent that they would be angered by adaine revoking aelwyns diplomatic immunity.
arianwen who truly could not understand that adaine was talking about when she called her mother cruel, and angwyn who thought he could “fix” adaine BY CASTING LIGHTNING AT HER
anyway, big long post about the parallels between these specific Bad Parents (and literal bad parents)

The Perfect Daughter, Part 1
Just a little angsty comic of mine exploring an alternate ending to Sophomore Year where Aelwyn didn't have her change of heart in time.

Au where the Abernants are all a different class besides wizards?
Oooh, okay! I've had a few thoughts along these lines, but let's go for something a little bit weirder:
The Abernant adults are, to all outside appearances, a boring diplomatic family of non-adventuring civilians from Fallinel who have enrolled their elder daughter at Mumple. However, their younger daughter, while attending the middle school near their house, breaks a bully's nose with one punch to the face.
This is because, of course, all of the Abernants are actually Monks, and Adaine and Aelwyn have been raised with strict and most importantly secret martial training. Specifically, Angwyn, Arianwen, and Aelwyn are all Shadow monks, and the parents have been carrying out assassination plots on behalf of some faction within the Fallinel government for the entire time they've been in Solace. They're getting Aelwyn into the family business, too, but Adaine's been slow in her training and they don't trust her to know anything important beyond her own training yet.
They are EXTREMELY displeased by Adaine blowing her cover because she couldn't keep her temper and be a good and meek girl in public the way Aelwyn has, but with that cover blown they're forced to allow her to attend Aguefort - after all, she showed such potential, and completely untrained! She would be wasted on a civilian path at Mumple!
The elder Abernants refuse to share their deeper secrets with Adaine until she can prove her trustworthiness, and she starts to pick up another subclass from Aguefort - the Way of Mercy. This makes them distrust her MORE because the philosophy is anathema to their own beliefs, and Adaine finds herself more and more frozen out by her family; meanwhile, more pressure gets put on Aelwyn to make up for her disappointing sister.
Adaine and Aelwyn have a dramatic fistfight eventually when Adaine interrupts her first solo assassination mission; the target (an agent of the council of chosen who was on to the older Abernants) ends up arresting both of them after the fight, not realizing that Adaine actually saved her life. Aelwyn gets broken out by their parents but disavowed by Fallinel's government; Adaine gets eventually released under a severe set of unfair parole conditions.
