I'm so cynical about that two-headed calf.

it's 2 weeks old and still can't stand. yesterday's update was "here is a video of her holding her head up", with a claim that it is growing in strength - but in the video, it very much looks like the heads are being propped up by a bag of woodchips.

calves should be standing within 2 hours of birth. by the third day, they should be mobile enough that they're hard to catch. by adulthood, they weigh over a thousand pounds.

there's also a religious angle to this. many of the farm's posts have been intensely christian, the farm has described the calf as 'a miracle from God', and nearly all the comments are people offering prayers. meaning.....they might not be making the most objective decisions regarding this animal's welfare.

I'm in a livestock Facebook group and two-headed calves aren't as rare as you'd think. mostly, they're born dead, or die shortly after birth. this isn't a deformity that is compatible with life, and I just can't see any outcome where this calf starts thriving.

I cannot stress this enough do not walk your dogs in high temperatures

Even if it’s reasonable for you, the pavement is hotter than the air and will burn your dogs’ paws. I have seen my fair share of blistered pads this summer. I have seen a dog who was so badly injured he had to be carried everywhere for weeks.

If you must take them out, drive them to a field where there is grass to walk on. It will still be hot but will be infinitely better than walking on concrete or any other kind of heat absorbent material.

Also: take water for your dog! You can get collapsible bowls to pour water in but even just poking small holes in the top of an everyday plastic water bottle and squirting out a stream for your dog to drink from/cool off in!

Sincerely, someone who works with animals for a living and grew up in an extremely hot and open climate

i had to emergency take my dog to the vets today and he's fine but man. they sure did make me pay £109.81 so that two nurses could hold down my dog whilst the vet yanked off his broken nail 😭

Poor bub is having a rough day, but it's all so we can help fix him. 🙁💙 Luckily we got mostly good news from the vet:

- weight isn't bad, just a bit low

- almost definite parasites, contributing to not eating

- bloodwork looks good other than low calcium (see below)

- some calcium sand present in stomach, but NO impaction & hopefully will pass fine with good hydration

The main issue as expected, is moderate MBD. Low calcium on bloodwork, his bones are very faint on the x-ray, but outlines present, as are wrist bones. But he also has a fractured front right leg 😭😭, which we can't do much for except pain meds.

He got subq fluids with calcium, we got pain meds to give twice a day, and we have a special critical care blend to syringe him once a day. Once we start getting poop, we can do a fecal to see what parasites he's got & get meds to boot those out.

Thankful for good vets, and nice staff who had to stay late for us to finish up. 💜 And very grateful that it's honestly better than I expected - I was very scared that he might have an impaction requiring surgery. I'm not sure we could've managed that. I've already spent over $300 over the weekend, getting supplies, and the bill today was $621. 😬

important update about monster under the cut

for those who don't know monster has developed a compulsive disorder that makes him bite his own tail to the point of actual self harm, weve been doing everything we can and hes been recently put on kitty antidepressants but its only been a few days so we haven't seen any improvement so far, hes been wearing a thick bandage on his tail to prevent him from further harm but recently he was able to rip it off and cause more superficial injures, after calling the vet and telling her the situation she told us to keep the wounds clean and change the bandage frequently

we had to take him to the hospital this morning because when we were changing his bandage last night he was yowling growling hissing and biting us viciously + the bandage was bloody and stuck to his fur and he wouldn't let us take it off completely without getting too agitated. they were able to take the remaining bandage off and clean the tail and they gave us a bigger elizabethian collar for him and told us to stop putting the bandage on because hes at risk of infection right now, and while they visited him they noticed that the last half of his tail was very limp and unresponsive so they suspect it might be dead from further trauma (probably when he took the bandage on and attacked himself) and it might have to be amputated soon. we'll be taking him to the vet on monday to run some tests and see how to go forward

im very sad and upset about everything, i didn't think it was going to have to come to this point but if amputation is the healthier safer option then we're definitely going to go through with it because all we want is for him to be safe and healthy.
