French animalier Rosa Bonheur was born #OTD (16 March 1822 – 25 May 1899).
Barbaro after the Hunt, c.1858
Oil on canvas, 38 × 51 1/4 in (96.5 × 130.2 cm)
Philadelphia Museum of Art collection
“With soulful eyes, a chained Barbaro dries off after his bath. Rosa Bonheur's sensitivity to canine emotions (as well as her understanding of their anatomy) stands out here as she ably conveys the hunting dog's desire to be free of constraints. Barbaro was one of several animals she kept and painted at her home near the Forest of Fontainebleau.”
