Don't be a hyppo*

Part 1: Humans are just an animal species

I was always scared of showing kindness. Fear of helping too much. Fear of giving too much to people, which would help them for the moment, but would make them dependant on me. I know that I have my heart on my sleeve, but I resist. I can help as much as I want to, without expecting anything in return, but constantly have the fear of being a 'mom', being someone who you can come back to, for anything, anytime. The fear of being the 'bakra'. The fear of getting lost in meddling with people's lives and not living my own.

I never liked to believe that I'm a good person. It must be because I'm an SKB- Sharma Ji ka beta (Refer to my first blog). Being good is attractive. And if you're too attractive, be prepared for the shit people bring with them. And you're too good to let them deal with their shit. So you would want to clean it up for them. And you would take over their lives and spoil them. Which makes your good eventually 'bad' for them. For many reasons I slowly started believing that kindness as a trait, is a vice rather than a virtue.

So every time I think of giving out a helping hand or being there for someone in need, there was a conflicting me who said I shouldn't do it. The good side of me almost always won, but I didn't like it. I never felt proud of my empathy.

I started practising to be ignorant, cold and rude. I started distancing out from people. I was scared to be myself and to express my thoughts, out of the fear that someone will get attached to me and then suffer. I thought that this is the only best way to shield myself and any other potential 'victims' of my goodness. I would not help people, I would not be there for them, for their good.

And

I was not comfortable to let people know that, I was a vegetarian because I don't want to kill someone to eat. I just gave some excuses. So scared to show that I don't wanna be a demon.

I was too scared.

Till I opened my eyes to see the cruelty. The cruelty which has been happening from decades, everywhere. The cruelty which we, the humans have been constantly blinding ourselves from. The cruelty which is happening to the animal's kingdom, to which we too belong.

The truth just slapped me hard. The morals with which I stand by, as a civilized and educated human being, became so meaningless. I called myself a strong feminist. I condemn any kind of mental, emotional and physical harassment to anyone. Exploiting and sexually abusing another human in the name of rape, pleasure or human trafficking always disturbed me. I treat everyone with respect, regardless of how they are- emotionally, mentally and physically.

It never occurred to my mind that I have been acting opposite to these exact values I stood for. The 'animal products' which I consume every day are the result of all these inhumane, uncivilized acts. The word 'Animal product' itself objectifies animals, us!

Animals are the raw material in any animal business. And business means efficiency. More productivity with lesser resources. So it's impossible to extract products from them without mentally, physically, emotionally and most importantly 'sexually' torturing them.

The reason with which I once opted out of eating meat is just a hoax.

I couldn't believe the abuses, tortures, rapes and the murders I was responsible for. I started researching about the sources from which these 'animal products' came. About the gruesome practices and the way culture and habits were weaved deep into our lives, which made us believe that we're doing the right things. No wonder it disturbed me for almost 2 months.

And then.

I made conscious efforts to stop putting 'animal abuse products' on my plate, or on my body. I Evolved. My insecurities about being kind and expressing compassion were gone. I started re-learning to be myself and to be more connected with nature. Compassion is not a vice or a virtue, its a luxury (dosen't mean you have to be rich-- Animal breeding, abuse and killing is resource intensive).

I no longer shy away from expressing that I'm with the animals and condemning speciesism*. I no longer show apathy to open my senses to hear the cries and watch the tears roll down- the unwillingness to die, the longing for independence, wanting to run, eat and play for as long as they want to, in their own safe territories, the unbearable pain to see their loved ones hurt and die in front of them- Aren't they just like us??

Further update to the ongoing travesty surrounding Shelley Cuthbert who has been ordered by the courts to surrender 10 dogs per month but instead has chosen to euthanize them, or not? Hopefully some animal rescue will rescue and rehome these animals before it is too late.
