Could you reccomend any good free programs to make 2d and 3d animations with that are relatively easy to learn and use?
Hi there! Thank you for your question.
I do know of some software that are free for 2D and 3D animation. I cannot say if they are easy to use, but I can say they have resources to help you learn them (artists also post YouTube videos to help you learn the software).
Here are some software you can take a look at:
Blender (Both 2D and 3D): Originally software to create 3D animation, Blender now lets creatives create 2D animation using the Grease Pencil tool. Both 2D and 3D are part of the Blender application once you download it.
Pencil2D (2D): Pencil2D allows you to sketch, ink and color your animation. You are able to import audio, but they recommend WAV files.
Krita (2D): Krita allows you to create 2D animation and storyboards. You are able to import audio for your animation projects.
OpenToonz (2D): OpenToonz (originally Toonz) is the software used by both Studio Ghibili and Futurama. Studios that created the films Belle and Promare also used OpenToonz.
FlipaClip (2D): While I have shared software for desktop and laptop platforms, FlipaClip is available for your mobile devices.
I hope this list helps you in learning animation. Each software listed has resources on its website for learning the program (YouTube is also a great help).

Never thought I'd get weepy over a software presentation keynote and yet, here we are
So for those of you who don't know, I use ProCreate. It's the only art program I've touched in at least five years, and aside from brief stints in my sketchbook, I've done everything in it. The animations I've done last year and this year were all done in ProCreate, which is strictly a drawing and photo editing software and animation was kind of built in as an afterthought. As such, the animation capabilities of ProCreate are kind of... nonexistent. Clunky at best, and I had no way to add sound. And because of how ProCreate's animation worked, I couldn't do long or particularly complex animation. Which is fine, like, I'm still learning how to animate in the first place. But we really are limited by the capabilities of our tools, and as much as I love ProCreate for static art, it left a ton to be desired in the animation department.
But the team that made ProCreate just announced they've made animation software. Not "are making," have made. And it's robust. It covers everything a full animation studio would do with multiple different softwares, all in one app. I can't even begin to say how excited I am for this. And it's only $20, where equally powerful—or hell, even less powerful—desktop animation software would easily cost $500 or more.
I'm so excited! I'll finally be able to follow along in a ton of the animation lessons I own! I couldn't do that before, because of ProCreate's limitations. Mostly the lack of animation timeline and I couldn't add sound—you know, the two most vital aspects of animation. But now I'll be able to! I just have to be patient until the end of November and fork over $20. And then? Then I'll be unstoppable.
I'm gonna conquer the fucking world, y'all.

Hello! I was reading through the asks you've answered and I saw that you use CSP Ex for animation line work but Opentoonz for color/fill-- is there a reason why you don't animate everything in Opentoonz? I ask because although I primarily draw/paint with CSP Pro, I've been practicing animation with Opentoonz because it's free and I'm hesitant to pay for the upgrade to CSP Ex
No worries at all!! Well there really isn't any grand answer other than I've been using CSP EX since I was 19 (7 years as of 2023). When I bought the program in college, I just couldn't afford Harmony or TVPaint and absolutely hated the UI interface for Adobe Animate, Character Animator and Photoshop. OpenToonz wasn't even a thing yet (or at least open to the public yet) so when I stumbled across CSP I tried it out. And it stuck with me! I just prefer CSP UI interface more because personally it feels the most natural to drawing/animating on paper while still having the option to do vector or raster layers. And once the animation feature came out, I just never went back haha. I do admit it's not perfect and can use some updating (audio scrubbing, symbols similar to Animate, optimize canvas playback, etc.) but after 7 years I just got comfortable with it I guess. It's not that I wouldn't suggest using OpenToonz (especially if it fits within your budget). It's just that the program would constantly crash if I tried to do anything beyond color/fill work. ^^; I guess my CPU specs don't really match well with the program so I won't force something that doesn't work.
But yeah, if you're on the fence about CSP EX I would say it's worth it in the long run. Compared to Harmony (which I paid $1K and some change for the discounted industry professional license, you can imagine what the full price is) you're getting your moneys worth with a one time purchase instead of the monthly/annual subscription model every software has decided to follow (which isn't ideal for people who can't afford that reoccurring expense). Overall, work what's best for you and your needs! I find it impressive to see other animators find workarounds that fit within their means. So if OpenToonz works for you, then I wouldn't pressure you to change your methods haha.
I hope that answered your question!

I am giving in to corporate pressure*
*whoops never mind
I hate to say it, but I think it's time I learn how to use Adobe Animate. They know perfectly well their shit subscription model is one of the only viable options for animators, but I don't really have much of a choice until Procreate Dreams is released. I SO want to do more advanced work, but through a single-layered timeline program like Procreate, that isn't really possible. Even with Dreams, most studios are unwilling to move over from Animate CC to options like ToonBoom or OpenToonz, despite being far more user-friendly.
Edit: As I am writing this, I realize OpenToonz exists, so I guess I've got a bit more time. Fuck Adobe :)

Does anyone know an animation software that lets you animate with things on separate layers? Or some way to have two animations in one gif or something? Putting together some sprite animations would be way less tedious if I had something that could do that.

hello! saw your short film and it was soo cute! i loved the softness of the lines. what program do you use to animate in? jw ;w;
Hi there,
I used two programs to animate Egg.
Most of the film was done in TVPaint, which is professional grade animation software. It’s great, but fairly expensive. I was able to get it with a student discount because they were nice enough to count proof of enrollment in an online animation course as an alternative to a student card. (They had great customer service when I interacted with them.)
For a few shots, mostly the quick cuts during the fight scene, I used Rough Animator on iPad. If you have an iPad you can use with an Apple Pencil I would highly recommend it. The timeline gets a bit clunky to use with very long shots, but it is still very useful to have good portable animation software, and for a $5 one-time payment it’s definitely worth it.
Interestingly, I noticed Rough Animator doesn’t drain my battery or lag in the way Procreate does when I have a bunch of layers active. (But I also have a fairly old iPad now, so that might not be Procreate’s fault.) But bonus points to Rough Animator for not keeping me chained to a charger, anyway.
Thanks for the question, I’m glad you liked my film :)

partner got me the roughanimator app and I love it
This is the first time i have been excited for and enjoyed animating on my pc
Only made half a second of a short amv with my fursona as a test but i’m super happy with how similar the controls are to flipnote, without struggling with my L button, blowing into the mic, and moving things with shakey ass hands on a tiny screen
So it’s better
The first time i can say i like a program more than i liked flipnote studio
Also yes i tried adobe animate and i hated it
I had to make my final project for ostc visual imaging on it and it sucked ass to work with
