Hey did the Rachel in your ‘verse hear the Ellimist’s story still?
Y'know, I still haven't decided whether "yes" or "no" is the funnier answer, so maybe I should put it to the masses:

Imagine it’s after the end of the series and Rachel is dead and everyone is at the funeral and I mean everyone, and so Arnold Schwarzenegger is there, obviously, and Marco is up giving his eulogy (over Rachel’s dead body, as promised), and he’s like “Oh yeah! Remember when Arnold Schwarzenegger saved that guy’s life? Well he didn’t! That was Rachel!”
And then Marco’s like ‘that was such a weird thing to say, imagine how that sounds to everyone sitting here’ and then he thinks ‘but no one can disprove that it wasn’t Rachel’ and little wheels start turning and he’s like, ‘hold up, what else can I attribute to Rachel?’ and then the rest of the eulogy gets real fun.

Reading Animorphs for the first time might post occasional updates if anyone cares enough to read them… Here are my brief thoughts from finishing The Invasion!
Animorphs: The Invasion was a lot of fun! I've been wanting to experience this series since I was a kid.
Something about long narratives always enticed me but for one reason or another buying 50 books just felt like... a lot! But I figure that now is as good a time as any to begin to experience these.
I'm kinda shocked at the end of this book. I knew that at one point or another one of these kids would morph more over two hours and become stuck. Like why else would the rule even be put in place? I always figured it was somewhere in the middle of the story, not in book one. So I'm shocked and excited as to where the story can go from here. In ways most books don't feel, this definitely felt like a pilot. And it is nice just to have some short easy books to read. I think the transformation aspect is more fun than I was expecting. Giving them the feelings and experiences of animals as opposed to just taking their form gives more weight to it all. Something about Tobias being the hawk and loving his experience as it resonated with me. I want wings too! I hope he enjoys his remaining life as a hawk.
Also why was Jake always talking about how pretty
Rachel is like bro....

All these Animorphs posts across my dash just got me thinking about how the whole conflict across the series is essentially the result of two artifical elder god gamers playing a 4X strategy game on a cosmic scale with real lives and civilizations at stake.
And that's kind of fucked up.

I wonder what would they do with the star trek franchise after the war? Like would they end the show? Would they continue as it is and get backlash for not including real aliens? Or would they try to retroactively incorporate andalites etc in the lore of the show? And most importantly, would they let Marco pitch his star trek ideas??
Also I just started watching ds9 last month (it's the first star trek I'm watching, it's great) and like it was airing during the war and it has A) an antagonistic/villian group of shapeshifters who infiltrate positions of power and B) a protagonist with a worm symbiot. And I can't stop wondering what the reaction to that would be after the war is in the open, would people think yeerks were involved in the production of the show?
No, I completely agree that sci fi is going to get awkward in the years after Animorphs ends. I haven't seen Star Trek, but that's why I have a through line in my fics about everyone suddenly not knowing what to make of X-Files, and the implication that the show itself is getting weird. It's partially because I have Thoughts about X-Files's wasted potential; it's mostly because I think postwar sci fi will be forced to grapple with all kinds of funny aneurysm energy (where events that occur after a work of fiction make that work deeply disturbing in hindsight).
Star Trek and other sci fi are going to have an upheaval after the yeerk invasion comes out. Kind of like the tectonic impact of the 9/11 murders on Hollywood, or the world's current ambivalence about COVID in fiction. I imagine there will be a lot of strictly metaphorical treatments of events (e.g. Inside and COVID, War of the Worlds and the NYC attacks). A lot of attempts to force the mold of a simple good vs. evil story (e.g. Glass Onion and COVID, Batman vs. Superman and the NYC attacks). Probably not a whole lot of nuance, at least not from Hollywood and not in those first years.

Jake was right actually when he said that some people would die and he didn’t care because they were going to win. He didn’t care if Cassie or Rachel or Marco died as long as they win. He could sacrifice even his best friends to save all of humanity and it was the right choice. If he had saved his friends but let the Yeerks win then he had only saved them temporarily because they were going to die anyway. He could sacrifice Rachel to keep the whole world safe. And we hate it because we love Rachel and she should have lived but for what? To be killed hours or days or weeks later by the Yeerks or the Andalites? Some people will die and it will be worth it. Jake saw everything and he knew.

I'm finally to a point where im happy with ALL of my animorphs playlists so im making a new pinned post with all of them:
They are all (except one) in the vicinity of an hours length bc i made these to share and i feel like you should be able to listen to any of these in a single sitting, two tops. I feel like you'll be able to tell who's who but I'll provide brief (ish) explanations under the cut just in case you care
While there are six playlists above there is not one for Ax. This is because while Ax appreciates many things about human culture he canonically dislikes music and also I can't even begin to fathom what he would listen to if he did
Meanwhile, Rachel has two playlists. This is because she is my favorite character and I think about her most often. One of her playlists "the original nike girl" breaks my "in the vicinity of an hour" promise but it's also more vibes based than any of the other playlists and the only one that's meant to be listened to on shuffle.
Her other playlist "Dirty Work" is based around my understanding of Rachel's character arc: her death was pointed to in the opening pages of the series and the entire length of the series was an exercise in a whole hecking lot of people (crayak/Drode, Jake, David, Cassie & Marco to an extent, etc) gaslighting her about what kind of person she was so that we could all sit here and say "Oh bUt shE wOUldN't bE aBLe To fUNcTioN WitHOuT tHe wAr" which to be clear is *not more true of her than any of the rest of them*. Yes I will die mad about this.
In Marco's playlist "RUTHLESS" my idea was really to challenge the idea that he coped with the end of the war better than the rest of them. Like, just because his coping mechanisms are higher-functioning than Jake's or Tobias' does not mean he's doing well. The entire series Marco acts like he's fine with the stress of the war and the *whole thing* with his mom but he is pretty clearly never for a single second fine, and personally I don't think that would be any different after the war. And I think I really managed to convey that with the frenetic tempo of this playlist so im really stinking proud of it
Cassie's playlist "to save some lives" has Americana/bluegrass/gospel/folksy vibes and I managed to incorporate a lyrical motif across several songs of going to a body of water and drawing from it until it was dry which convinced me of an interpretation of Cassie's character and role on the team being (what the other animorphs see as) a bottomless resource of justification for their actions which we see when Jake demands she justify creating the auxiliarymorphs in 50 and she finally has to say "okay. Then it's wrong. But we're going to do it anyway" and how that energy might carry her as the only survivor of the war
Jake's playlist "Brother Against Brother" is part of my ongoing campaign to rewrite the beaver book bc CIVIL WAR IMAGERY IS PARTICULARLY SALIENT TO JAKE FOR A FREAKING REASON. Ahem. But I am fixated on how personal and immediate the stakes of the war are for Jake specifically because he literally shares a roof with the enemy.
And finally we come to Tobias' playlist "A Kind of Freedom" which gestures at my understanding of Tobias as someone who wants to be happy at the same time he as he wants to wallow. he wants to sit in his sadness. and he does. And I am not judging him here because I was the exact same way when I was his age (which makes his books very hard to reread now) because he, unlike me, was not afforded the chance to grow up and learn what it felt like not sit in his sadness. Anyways yada yada yada there's a reason he didn't answer when the Ellimist asked him if he was happy.
Anyway, if anyone's read all this, I hope you enjoy these playlists as well!

you ever imagine that after the war when ax missed his friends, he'd just morph to human and stare at himself in the mirror? just to see their faces in his own? to feel like they're back together again? to notice all of his distinctly Rachel-like features and mourn her?
neither do I haha
