Commissions like this are available starting at $200 for single character (includes painted background)
.
You'll notice that while I used the same poses, I fixed the anatomy. I use realistic anatomy and whoever threw this scene together in the film didnt pay attention to the placement of each characters leg 🤣 When I was redrawing it, I had to use photos of real wolves howling because the cartoon was THAT off/weird anatomy.
.
I'll have to find new brushes for the next one I do because this didnt have the texture I wanted despite me trying to use stock paper textures to enhance the paint brush effect. Krita is also a pill to work with so because the program is only half functional, I spent 4 days of 8-12 hours of work on the full image including trying to make it look like oil/acrylic paint on paper rather than digital art. That failed so its overly obvious that its not painted on paper 😭 I need "paint brushes" that actually look like a swath of paint brushed on a piece of paper. Photoshop has them! Krita just doesnt play nice no matter how many mods I shove into it :( and I cant make old PS work with my Pixelbook/ChromeOS. Yes I installed it via Linux, however all the UI is super tiny and it wont register pen pressure. I hate how Adobe split old PS into a dozen different apps and requires a subscription to use them these days. I miss PS from 20 years ago.

Two characters, one design
Okay, let's talk about something, what almost every fan of Balto movie(s) discussed — the design of the iconic character(s). After the sequel was released, the fans started pretty aggressive debates, insisting the idea of Aniu and the White Wolf being one and the same character or two different characters. The ones, who considered them as one character, used as proofs the interview with the director of the sequel and words about low budget of the sequel. The others, who were fans of the original film and considered them as the two separated characters, used for agruments the official novel of the original movie and the fact that Aniu and the White Wolf allegedly have drastically different design. Here and here we discovered that the White Wolf from the original film is a male and a manifestation of Balto's wolf side and self-acceptance. Here we discovered that Aniu the white wolf from the sequel is the wolf goddess, as well as how the idea of her being Balto's biological mother is impossible, and why the idea of Balto's mother being a wolf is the main problem of the sequel and creates lots of plot holes, contradictions and morbid moments, so better to think that Aniu is not Balto's mother, but just a patroness, for who every wolf and wolfdog metaphorically is a child, since she is the Great Mother of all wolves, and Balto's real mother was a husky.
So, there are two different and separated characters. Aniu is the wolf deity, the white wolf is a symbolical character. However, ironically, their design is identical. Yes, I'm not crazy. After detailed studying and comparing these characters, I can confidently say that their design is absolutely identical. But why they look so distant from each other more than every other main character (Balto, Jenna, Boris)? Because the white wolf was drawn and colored in different style. You can notice that every character, except the white wolf, have black outline, while the white wolf has very thin and light-purple-greyish outline — plus, the light-purple mask on his muzzle has no outlines, i.e. the white wolf has higher quality animation and coloring, very close to Disney films of 90s era, he is drawn and colored different from any other character in the movie, i.e. he is unique visually. In contrast to this, Aniu has thick and black outline (including on her mask around eyes) — just like any other character in the sequel. Another simple answer — because in the original film wolves looked realistic and feral, while in the sequel they look very cartoonish. So let's cover every aspect. Fur color. Many fans told that Aniu isn't white, but light-grey. It's not true. She is white just like the White Wolf. People, who said this, just have no idea or ignore how the light works. Look at the place, where Balto encounters Aniu. The evening, the clouds, which make this area darker. Plus blue, red, orange, yellow and pink colors because of the sunset.
Tumblr media
That's how it looked earlier.
Tumblr media
Aniu sat in the shadow, in the dark, with her back to the sunlight. That's why her face and chest looked greyish, and lighter places are purple-pink.
Tumblr media
In the river scene Aniu is white. And her grey-purple mask around eyes has no outline, just like the White Wolf's.
Tumblr media
In the scene with wolverines she is white.
Tumblr media
Like, compare the fur color of Balto and Nava, for example, in the day scene and evening scene. And there's the same pink lighting from the sunset.
Tumblr media
The White Wolf from the original film looked snowy-white or creamy-white, because he was in blizzard under the sun.
Tumblr media
Simply saying, Aniu is white too. Eye color and sclera color. People, who use that, ignore the fact that every character experienced animation errors and bloopers during the sequel. Especially eye color changing through the sequel. Not to mention that none of the eye color from the sequel was faithful to the original film. Like this: Jenna's eyes are red instead of golden, Balto's eyes are blue/red instead of brown, as well as his sclera is white instead of yellow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In contrast to this, Aniu's eyes are yellow just like the eyes of the White Wolf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The problem here exactly with her sclera. Her sclera is white instead of black, plus the sunset lighting made it seem pink. The same thing you can notice with Nava's sclera:
Tumblr media
The animation error made Aniu's and other wolves' sclera to be white instead of black. And the lighting added pink shade.
Ear color and absent black tips on ears. The White Wolf and Aniu actually both share this blooper. In one scene the inner side of ear is pink, in other scene is grey.
Tumblr media
Aniu's absent black ear tips can be explained with another blooper — in the original film Jenna had black ear tips too, while in the sequel she doesn't.
Tumblr media
Plus, as you can see above, the White Wolf's mask around eyes has no outline. Aniu also has this mask around her eyes, just with black outline (I guess, they were afraid that in the shadow the color of the mask will be lost, so they added outline). Muzzle/head shape, eye shape. That's apparently was favourite argument from fans of the original film. However, they ignore one simple thing — the camera angle and how the character holds his/her head. Because, again, the shape of muzzle, head and eyes are identical. Compare:
Tumblr media
Plus, you can notice here Aniu's black ear tips. And in previous screenshots you could notice that eye shape of Aniu and the White Wolf is identical, when eyes are open or closed too. And you again can see bloopers with outline etc.
Tumblr media
Plus, the White Wolf was in snow storm, so it makes sense, why his eyes are more narrow, i.e. not fully open. Plus, don't forget about different color of outline. Fluffiness and shagginess. Oh yes, people point out how Aniu isn't fluffy in contrast to the White Wolf, but ignore the inconsistency of the White Wolf's fluffyness in different scenes. First of all, the White Wolf was in the blizzard, so the wind was ruffling him. Second, in some scenes the white wolf is very shaggy (not only fur on the neck, but also on legs), while in other he's less shaggy (again, fur in neck and legs), the same thing with Aniu (in one scene she is very shaggy, in others not).
Tumblr media
So this inconsistency can be explained by the wind and animation being hard.
The size and proportions. Another argument from people, who have no idea, how the camera and symbolism work. The White Wolf seems way larger than Balto because of camera angle, it was made to emphasize the majesty of the White Wolf and Balto's fear and shame.
Tumblr media
When Balto realized, who he truly is (a wolf), embraced his wolf half and howled with the White Wolf (his true self), the White Wolf still was bigger and taller than Balto, but not like in previous scenes before accepting wolf nature by Balto.
Tumblr media
Aniu has the same proportions the White Wolf has. She is bigger and taller than Balto as well. Her height, head and muzzle shape and proportions are identical to the White Wolf's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It needs to be blind or incredibly biased for saying that Aniu and Balto share the same size and proportions. I'd say she is taller than even Nava, who was bigger than Balto as well.
So, in conclusion. Aniu and the White Wolf are two different characters. Aniu is the wolf deity, the White Wolf is a symbol. But their design is identical.

Puppy Balto with his mother and father.
Out of the blue I just got the idea for this. As for my headcanons about how his parents met, how they fell in love and what ended up happening to them? Idk. I don't have any. This was mainly done because I wanted to try designing Balto's father (his name is Nanook btw).
For Aniu I used the design of the white wolf from the original instead of the Balto 2 design (and yes I know there's been a lot of debate about wether the white wolf in the first one actually was Aniu or not but I always liked to think it was).
For Nanook, well as you can see he's almost the spitting image of his son. I basically took Balto and redesigned him to be more husky-like.

I was reading about Apollo's lovers and why is no one here talking about Rhoeo/Rhoio?
Like come on
Tumblr media
"I'm so sorry your dad is so terrible, honey. Wanna live on my sacred Island instead?"
Tumblr media
And he saved her sisters too???? And turned them into goddesses????
Tumblr media
And he was rising their son himself???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And apparently Apollo had no problem with Rhoeo marrying his apprentice??? And Zarex adopted Anius??? And they had 2 more childern??? (I saw the 2 extra children only being mentioned on Wikipedia tho, so if anyone have other source talking about them please share with me 🙏🏻)
Also, Zarex was grandson of Chiron and Chariclo who is said to be Apollo's daughter (in some versions of the myth at least) which makes Apollo Zarex's great grandfather.
Tumblr media
And Anius later become the king of Delos (you know the same island where Apollo WAS BORN) and also his father's priest 🥺🥺🥺
Why is no one talking about this??? Look I love Hyacinthus, Cyrene and Admetus, but we're sleeping on some good stories.
Anyway, Rhoeo is now on my top 5 Apollo's lovers list. Slay queen
Edit: I drew them -> Rhoeo, Anius Zarex

please tell me about the headcannons for the First Ninja 🙏
!!! ;D Since you asked so nicely! ;3 uuuuhhhhhh lets see...some of my personal headcanons for First are:
He is baby of Norisu Clan, aka the Youngest child.
He barely remembers his parents, for they died when he was young (courtesy to Sorcerer and thus one of the many reasons Norisu Clan sought to defeat him), so he was mostly raised by his Oldest Siblings.
When he was younger (toddler-ish age), he was dotted upon by his older siblings, so he was kind of a brat, since he was used to being center of attention and being taken care of (tho he grew out of it pretty fast).
Tumblr media
When he was younger (more teenager years) his hair used to be longer and he wore it in topknot (think Samurai Jack style).
And all of his Siblings were gone, he cut his hair off to honor their sacrifice and make a promise to finally defeat the Sorcerer (think sorta that Zuko scene from ATLA lol).
So, when we see First in Flashback of Ultimate Lesson, with his tiny ponytail, its (canonically i think?) several years after inprisonment of Sorcerer, that little tuft is what managed to grow back. (cause i think its interesting that we never see First out of the Ninja Suit in 13th Century Ninja episode)
Tumblr media
Speaking of 13th Century Ninja episode(I both love and hate that episode so much man): I headcanon that most of First's behaviour can be explained by stress and despair he started to feel after loosing his siblings (also probably mild sleep deprivation from nightmares and ptsd). Which was why he seemingly 'gave up' so easily (like ??? ugh).
The other contributing factor is First being confronted by unrelenting dumb optimism/hope of Randy and suddenly strongly reminded First of himself, when he was younger and still believed his clan could defeat the Sorcerer and how he was that same ray of hope for his older siblings who were becoming weary from the battles. But he is older now, and no optimism or hope helped to save his siblings from the ultimate sacrifice, so he understands that darkness his family tried to protect him from much better now.
So basically I like to think younger First was a lot like Randy in many ways, especially in that assurance/confidence that any mistake can be fixed.
Tumblr media
First is a great sea farer! Canonically, Norisu clan followed Sorcerer across the sea (according to Secrets of the 9 i think?), so they would have spent months/if not years at sea. And if First was young, it would have left a great impression on him, that expierence and time on the open waters.
That man can not cook to save his life, and he lost most of his appetite after his family's sacrifice, that's why he is rather scrawny.
First is not the best Ninja of Norisu Clan. He grew up in the protective shadow of his more talented and powerful Older Siblings, who in turn taught him everything they knew. So he might not be the most powerful of his Norisu Siblings, but he is the most rounded in his abilities and the most balanced one. ;)
hmmm i think im done for now ;D ask me later for more, maybe i'll have some more concrete ideas ;)

An idea I got in early January and I've been working on it on and off ever since! A fan-poster of one of my favorite movies, Wolf Quest!
ID below the cut because it's a long one.
[ID: A digitally drawn poster featuring various canine characters and a raven against a dark blue cloudy sky with a sea covered in ice sheets in the background. In the front of the bottom is Aleu, a tan-and-cream wolfdog with blue eyes. She is facing forward with a neutral expression. Above her is a flying raven. Above the raven facing left is Nava, an elderly wolf with a pale tan-and-cream coat, brown ears, large bushy gray eyebrows and dull brown eyes. He has a worried expression. To the right and also facing right is Niju, a large near-black wolf with a silver-gray stomach, a large muzzle and chin, distinct whiskers, black patches around his eyes and blue eyes. He has an angry expression and has his teeth bared. Above them in the center is a logo which reads "Balto II: Wolf Quest". On top above the logo is Aniu, a forward-facing near-white wolf with paler patches around her glowing yellow eyes and black inner ears. She has a neutral expression. End ID.]

Interview with Dev Ross, Balto-2 Writer
In 2020 there was interview with Dev Ross, published in 2020. Here is another interview with Dev Ross, Balto 2 writer, published in AnimationSource in 2021. Byanca Moureen: You mentioned that the studio wanted a sequel to be much more different from the original and with a focus on Inuit and Native American mythology, and that you were inspired by the biography of your husband and embodied it in Aleu and her journey. Can you tell us about the process of creating and developing the story? Have there been any early versions of the script before you or from you? How did they differ from the final scenario? Were there any darker or more dramatic ideas that ended up being scrapped? DR: The process of creating the story had to do with what I was personally experiencing at the time. I was creating a film with Native American teenagers in Oklahoma, USA, on their Indian reservation. I was inspired by their stories of trying to be their authentic selves in a white dominated society and how they, in many ways, were pressured into assimilating. There were no earlier version of the script and nothing of what I wrote was scrapped. Byanca Moureen: We heard that the script was a little longer than the final movie. Were any deleted scenes that remained on the script? And what scenes were not in the script, but they appeared in the film? DR: Sorry, but what you heard isn't true from my perspective. Perhaps, the director would say different, but I know of nothing that was cut. Byanca Moureen: Did you have an idea of who Balto's father was, and what was his backstory? Did Balto ever know and see him? Was this character ever discussed or created? DR: Balto’s father was never developed. It’s just a known fact that there are mixed wolf and dog breeds — as can happen in the wild, if a dog is feral or loose. I raised a wolfdog myself. In my own mind, I imagined Balto’s father to be a stray dog, a loner, a survivor. He is like a human father, who begets a child and then never even knows it. Byanca Moureen: I'd like to ask you about Aniu. She appears as a totem spirit-shapeshifter and clearly legendary figure among the wolves. Wolves refer to her as The Great Aniu and honor the information from the visions, created by her. She can take the form of different animals and appear in the dreams and communicate through them. The wolves never mentioned that Aniu died or ever existed as a living wolf. Even the film clearly hinted that all totem animals are her guises. Is Aniu a kind of wolf patron goddess for wolves? Who is she? What is she? What’s her role? Is she really Balto's mother or is she just a guardian spirit? Is there any backstory here? DR: Aniu became the white wolf and is now the Great Mother of all wolves and serves as their guide — if they will listen. She represents the "call of the wild" that exists in us all. Most of us ignore that call, repress it or can't even hear it. But some do. Balto did, but fought it to be like regular dogs. But his daughter could not repress the desire to return to her roots, her true nature. Aniu is part of the Great Spirit. She is the reminder that we all are part of nature and must honor nature as a powerful force. Aniu shows herself to those who will listen. (Trivia: In my mind, her great love for her pups and her wolf pack made her a guardian spirit once she died. And, yes, she joined in with a Greater Force, a Great Guardian Spirit. Unfortunately, I don't know, why and how she died — that was decided before I came on the project.) Byanca Moureen: Was Aniu a character of your personal creation, or she was planned by the team working on the original Balto? Was she the white wolf from the original movie? Was it your idea to make exactly Balto's mother to be his wolf side, or it was already stated by the original film and its team, and you just expanded and developed it in the Wolf Quest? What’s behind this mysterious character? DR: The white wolf was in the first Balto, but not developed. I loved her and wanted to make more of her in my film, so I made her Balto’s mother. No one gave me any information on her, so I named her Aniu and developed her a bit more. I was hoping to do more with her in another film, but I wasn’t hired to do another. Byanca Moureen: I’d like to ask about the totem spirits. The wolverines symbolized the fear, the fox symbolized the guile, the bear symbolized the intuition, the caribou symbolized life. What did the white wolf, the mouse and the raven symbolize? And what was the essence of the totem spirits? Are they some kind of the deities from the beginning or they were mortal animals in the past and before death? Maybe every spirit (including the ones in the cave) has a specific role, they have some kind of hierarchy, panteons? And if Aleu was the true leader from Aniu’s prophecy, why the dreams and the tests were addressed to Balto, why Nava considered Balto as this true leader from the prophecy? I feel the emotional and psychological arcs here, so I’d like to go deeper into this topic and to know a bit more. DR: White wolf symbolized being in touch with one's true self, one's true nature. She is an invitation to explore the deepest parts of yourself. She is the Great Mother, the one who loves you absolutely. The one who wants you to self actualize. The mouse is the symbol of wisdom of examining. The mouse seeks to get you to look inside your mind. The raven is a complex symbol. It can represent loss, prophecy and insight. Balto had the dreams, because dreams bring up what one often represses. His daughter was in touch with her wild nature, while Balto repressed it — thus his dreams. Nava felt Balto was the true leader, but discovered that Balto was only a part of a greater plan. Byanca Moureen: Many fans wondered about the puppies. There are six of them, and we only know the names of three: Aleu, Saba and Dingo. The name of the fourth puppy (Kodi) we learn in the third film. What are the names of the other two puppies? Or were they nameless even in the script? DR: I thought I gave names to all the puppies, but, sorry, I don’t remember. Byanca Moureen: Nava has the traits of shaman, he speaks with the spirits and the nature, the wolves themselves are clearly inspired by Inuits and Native Americans. Can you tell more about the culture and traditions of the wolves in the film? Maybe you had some ideas for their developing? DR: I can tell you that I studied how wolves are, how they exist in packs and fused that with Inuit and Native American culture. I had access to a lot of wisdom from Native American elders and used it in the film. Byanca Moureen: If you were again asked to make a continuation of the story of Balto or Aleu, would you agree? And if so, what would you like to tell about? DR: Yes, I would agree. I would take up in the wild with Aleu. Most likely, I would have her return to her father, because she needed help. Perhaps, because of enviromental issues or that her pack had been captured or run off by humans. I was very disappointed, when they did not hire me to do the third Balto, so I made myself look elsewhere for writing satisfaction. Balto 2 was very personal for me. Byanca Moureen: Thank you for your answers! Thank you! Dev

“Yushiro said this was a really good one,” Senjuro whispered. “He said he would taste really good, because he’s rich.”  Kyojuro squeezed his eye shut and tilted his head back. He didn’t want to know about the victim. Somehow, it made it worse, knowing that Tamayo and Yushiro specifically chose certain humans for this, that they didn’t just kill and eat the first ones they stumbled across.  “He says it’s because rich people are better taken care of. They eat better food and more often, so they taste better,” Senjuro continued.  “Just like livestock,” Kyojuro rasped before he could stop himself.  Senjuro’s eyes lit up as he nodded. “Yeah! Just like that!”
I know this is super traumatic for Kyojuro, but it's so amusing to me. Making Senjuro a demon while Kyojuro stays human for a couple years in the role swap AU is so fucking funny
