hey all you andre sexyman truthers: i’m reading André (1798) by William Dunlap so you don’t have to!
a bit of background about WTF this is: written only 18 years after his execution, andré (1798) is considered one of the first examples of american tragedy. it’s a 5-act play dramatizing john andre’s life and death that - despite being written by a self-professed patriot - is VERY sympathetic toward andre, who is the undisputed hero of the play. drawing inspiration from anna seward’s “monody on major andre” (the background of which, if you’re interested, is explained very well here), dunlap focuses heavily on andre’s relationship with honora sneyd, a young englishwoman who he had been engaged to - and forced to break from by her disapproving family for financial reasons - right before enlisting in the british army. anyway, if that didn’t bore you to death and scare you away LOL, i’m gonna be liveblogging this as i read it, starting with the prologue!
right from the get-go, i can tell william dunlap is a major simp for andre (aren’t we all...) LOL.
Tumblr media
i DO love the disclaimer that this isn’t necessarily historically accurate. sue me, but i actually fully support creative license in historical fiction! but yeah, maybe don’t use this as a source of actual facts about andre’s life lol.
Tumblr media
the last stanza of the prologue is basically like “teehee don’t judge my writing too harshly,” which, same, dunlap, same.
i shall reblog this with more commentary as i get into the actual meat of the play!!

what's up i'm still very ill with this bug/flu/whatever and i'm going to start binging all of good omens season 2 in a minute. but to spare you all 59850 posts on your dash about something you might not care about, i will instead use this post to liveblog! i will be going back to this post and editing it with every update, so if you're interested in hearing my thoughts you can come back here (and if you're not it should be easy to avoid)
here goes!
update #1: when i started watching i SWORE to myself i would let it all play out before obsessively rewinding the bits i liked after it was all over. less than 2 minutes in and i failed.
"I'd hate to see you getting into any trouble." now what if i chewed my arm off.
update #2: crowley shielded aziraphale first before aziraphale shielded him in the garden of eden???? what if i cried.
update #3: the power is finally back so i've finished episode 1. all this talk about the book of life is raising my goddamn hackles. terrified to see how it comes into play. it's very interesting to me that crowley hasn't told aziraphale about it, too. i personally think aziraphale would still hide gabriel even if he knew about the extreme sanctions.
also, shelly conn is fabulous but i feel her version of beelzebub is *much* more animated than anna maxwell martin's. she's incredible and i love all her mannerisms but at the same time i was very attached to the stoicness of the previous beelzebub so it'll take a little bit to get used to.
update #4: aziraphale doing the little 'one two three four' with his finger before singing to maggie. he's so precious to me he's the specialiest little guy in the world for me and i understand crowley because i, too, would get into trouble with both heaven and hell to keep aziraphale safe
update #5: episode two done. thoughts:
1- this is just a romcom isn't it. i mean.
2- the music that played while aziraphale said crowley needed to take him to hell invokes the music that played during the bandstand scene in episode 3 of season one. i LOVE each and every scene that examines the themes of 'your side, my side, our side' <3
update #6: i'm (not unpleasantly!) surprised that they're addressing aziraphale's classist rant from the book. on one hand i'd just considered it one of the things the adaptation decided to do away with, but now that they've acknowledged it, i'm now very excitedly anticipating a resolution to that conflict. because if i remember correctly in the book the matter didn't really get resolved, aziraphale just dropped this bombshell on me and i had to put the book down for a minute lol
i guess they've been hinting at beelzebub spying on the bookshop using the flies, but i'm curious as to why they would have that knowledge and pretend they didn't. what's the benefit for playing coy here? either there is, and we don't know what that is yet, or the flies are a red herring.
update #7: finished episode 3 and i'm honestly not sure i understood a lot of it! what happened to crowley after falling through the gorund?? did they send him to the pit of torture or whatever for stopping the suicide? also aziraphale is my favourite character but if he says something like "the virtues of poverty" again i'm going to bite his head off. anyway. crowley. don't you know you're a fictional character and that according to all laws of fiction, if you say "if any harm comes to aziraphale" it means it's probably gonna happen? smh
update #8: i still haven't watched any more since last update but. oh dear. i'm too worried to click 'next episode' because 1- the more it dawns on me what might've happened to crowley after getting pulled into the ground i get so hopelessly depressed and 2- 'it's too late. it's always too late' is a very worrying note to end on and i'm positively terrified!! for future reference don't watch anything emotional or worrisome while having a stomach bug. i'm writhing in my seat lol.
update #8: the chat between "jim" and crowley. i am gonna need a short break before unpausing :)
update #9: so i haven't updated for a while because i couldn't think but i just finished the series. i think i can't think. i think i need to sleep and i think i'm very very very very very sad.

ahahahahah I love that the captioners, despite having watched this all through, don't realize he's saying "Hester" with an h-drop dialect/accent/I am not wading into that controversy it is the word you like best. If you listen long enough to accents that feature h-drop, you can actually generally tell the difference between Hester and Esther, Hannah and Anna, etc, and I cannot to save my own life explain how it sounds different but it very much does.
It reminds me of what I liveblog tipping the velvet and every so often the caption will just be [unintelligible] and I'm like, "Uh they said X" like sure you have to listen a little more closely but it's hardly UNINTELLIGIBLE

I didn't "liveblog" the last ep because...it didn't feel livebloggable. I mean, it did. But it would have just been nothing but grousing, and I'm sure that would've gotten redundant.
The whole ep should've hit more emotionally, but the dialogue was painful in spots. And people were overselling it, making the hokiness so much more obvious. I get these were newer writers, but I also know enough about TV writers' rooms to know there is collaboration in every single episode. I...whatever. The Sam/Kam scenes were THE most (only) solid bits.
And I do not know who the hell was at the wedding planner because I don't know the two people that I saw, especially the one so obsessed with security and not wanting this stranger to call him by his first name yet totally throws caution to the wind and is comfortable making out in a public place. Near the windows.
The only thing I can figure is that Anna was being really weird, and Callen -- already notably on edge and still in work mode -- clocks this and is too weirded out to play along. You could tell he was starting to try, and then Anna was just SO extra he just wanted to poke holes in the persona she was putting on because he didn't get why she was being like this. And I didn't either.
Continuing on the "only thing I can figure" with Anna, is the fact that she's mentioned before about wanting to go full on "normal life." Or what she thinks is "normal" -- seen in magazines, Instagram, etc. She can't completely get out of it as we've seen; she still wants to do something adjacent. But she hangs onto the "normal" because she could only dream about it as an adult. She feels like she missed out on getting to be one of those little girls who dreams about your wedding day and grown up house because she was too busy being Black Widowed, er, Noble Maiden-ed. And the "normalness" she's seeking is so opposite of what she's done or had in the past for that very reason. Yes, the drama and spy jobs were how she met Callen. But it was also consistently what kept them apart time after time. After "Down the Rabbit Hole," I think she really, really was like, "I could lose him" and was so grateful she didn't. She wants to touch the normal that doesn't involve this kind of thing that could keep them apart...permanently.
And Fatima accidentally hits on this. She's frustrated with Callen, and hey, he got to come and have family dinner. She wanted to repay the favor, or so she thought, by helping Anna out with the wedding to give her a decent partner. But Fatima is all Beverly Hills. She's Hollywood. She's the Instagram wedding type. She makes the mistake of selling all this as normal to Anna, and talking about how this is that one special day when you get to just go full-on fancy -- and that's what everyone does! So Anna starts to adopt all of these behaviors, and she wants to play this part. She would NEVER truly allow Arkady to officiate (even if we, the audience, bribed her heavily). But doesn't it sound super sweet and touching to tell the froufrou wedding planner that her father wants to officiate? And the wedding planner reacts just as she thought she would.
Callen's facial reactions the whole time (and well done, COD on this) were such a mix of confusion that gradually started to turn into annoyance. He was not told they were playing this game, a game he really doesn't want to play. And I think he's trying to mess with her so she can see how ridiculous this all is -- at least for her to try to be this person.
So when he starts joking about this entire thing he thinks is a joke, a sitcom that he's watching, and grabs the piece of paper from her she at first replies like a high school girl. And then the minute she lets the aggressive part comes out that has been annoyed for separate reasons with him and trying to be perfectly pleasant in front of the wedding planner, a.k.a. Harbinger of Normalcy, it's the real Anna at the surface. The feisty one that Callen knows is the real her. And once the facade was broken, it was REALLY broken. And Callen was just so relieved that she was "back," he was like, "I guess she's on top of me now, so we might as well make out if this stops us from having to do that dumbass quiz." And then they have to run home. And this whole dumb d-story better not have been done because they needed a way to set up Anna getting accidentally pregnant because they were a little too impulsive that day.
Anyway, this comes after what we got of their relationship in the early part of the season, super healthy conversations that made them seem like the couple the writers always intended them to be -- and not what we had really seen. So, yes, extra frustrating.
But who cares, right?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not me. Clearly. That's for sure.

i cant sleep... lets go on with the liveblogging. ep2 beloved
episode two, really red. in which someone gets angry
i really do love mabels voicemail message so much. customer service voice
to let the world know that i died for love..ok
shes so parasocial but the best part about it is shes actually not
its so funny to me. mabel is, arguably, somewhat, dead in a ditch somewhere
YOU HEAR ME SO I KNOW IM REAL. dies and kills
annas Things with reality hit so much while quarantining they really did. it was so much.
Tumblr media
ive always wondered so much about this part. first of all, what is she talking about? i always kind of got the impression it was a bird. was it tressa? was it the dead baby crow from later in this episode? secondly, who is recording this? i don't think this is annas voicemails at all. for a while ive had a theory that the house/hill is the one listening in on everything and weaving a story together, which kind of falls apart if you consider episode eleven and a big chunk of season seven, but which is still interesting to consider. i just dont know what this is all about.
Tumblr media
SHES SO OBSESSED. i get her
mabel doesnt have to watch anyone die mabel doesnt have to take responsibility for anything...
sallys ambassador complaining about deforestation dream is so funny. ambassador for who mrs martin!!! like she is SO haunted by the faeries imagine what it must have been living there all her life, always reachable by them, always reached by the house...
everything will be the same until something changes another point for the timeloop girlies
THE HOUSE IS WAITING!
THE DREAM UGHHHH i do believe this is luna but of course the boundaries between luna and mabel are at this point sort of meaningless. and like. her letting mabel back into her head...also "i dont think our dreams really mean anything there's too much white nose in our heads" is soo her like subconsciously removing guilt from herself. love you anna
can you guys believe they werent written to be romantic until like episode seven or something. i cant!
shes soooo gothicheroine.......
Tumblr media
THIS IS SO FUCKING. UGH!!!!!!!!!! making her an accomplice making her culpable...
anna limon asmr
"this is as much your fault as it is mine. i hope you know that. you might not be here, but... you're here, you're in this with me. THIS IS YOUR STORY TOO EVEN IF YOU WONT ADMIT IT!!!!"

monarch rant
here’s a oops not so little review because i watched the first two episodes with @actuallylukedanes which meant no liveblogging but i won’t be watching any more so it’s time to share my thoughts (spoilers behind the cut):
literally the best thing about this show is its logo. i had to see it multiple times before i realized there was a glittering gold thin-as-wire butterfly embedded in the title card, and i had a genuine moment of enjoyment at the wordplay i hadn’t even understood they were trying to go for. i’ll always be the girl who got a cheap butterfly tattoo for no reason as soon as it was legal. give me a butterfly and i’m happy
this show was heavily marketed as ‘susan sarandon plays the matriarch of a reigning country music family, full of drama about the business and relationships.’ it was NOT marketed as ‘susan sarandon plays the country star who is the center of a family, and she DIES IN THE PILOT to kick off the drama and will only appear in flashbacks and weird hologram contrivances for the rest of the show.’
because susan sarandon’s character was by far the most compelling one, as well as the center the family revolves around, killing her off immediately lessened any interest i had in the show, and turned all the other characters into worse versions of themselves.
she and anna friel honestly played a great mother and daughter dynamic, they were interesting to watch (for the one episode of screentime they got). but anna friel is better than her character and the writing, tbh.
when she’s told she has to sing backup for her father instead of advance her solo ambitions, she declares all fiercely to her brother that she’ll find a way to make her stardom happen. i had a moment of excitement during the performance that followed, thinking maybe she would surprise everyone and blend a song of hers with what her dad was singing, show she had unexpected talent and was her own person. but nope, she did what she was told, and that line didn’t lead anywhere.
so far, that was true of the whole show--no surprises to be found. the show’s ‘twists’ were telegraphed so hard and far in advance that they only surprised me when i expected them to do something else because they couldn’t possibly be that obvious, and then they did the obvious thing.
the show also clearly thinks that guns are inherently dramatic, as if they can replace actual drama and plot--there were two firings of a weapon and two menacing scenes of caressing or bracing with one, just in the two episodes i watched. again, these were played for drama and often as cliffhangers...like ‘in three months an unknown person will be shot by this central character. you have to stick around now until we tell you who and why, right? right?!?’
the only thing monarch apparently loves more than casual gun use is people having affairs. the grand family of country in this universe includes the parents and their three children. the big regret (and drama) in susan sarandon’s life involves a youthful barn arson she committed with a person inside, and it’s implied that she was trying to kill her husband’s mistress.
both of her daughters are married to people who are actively cheating on them, and her son who isn’t married is the other half of one of those affairs. it’s a lot, but not in a ooh-how-scandalous way. it mostly just makes it harder to believe any of these characters care about each other or are worth rooting for.
the other half of that being the sisters dynamic, which i would have enjoyed if it had followed the arc it hinted at at first, where the younger fat and queer sister chose not to sing because her mother had belittled her into believing she wasn’t good enough. watching her come into her own and struggle with the way it would hurt her sister if she took the spotlight, because we initially see her loving her sister deeply, could have been interesting.
but as soon as we start to see her talent unfold, it turns out she secretly wanted to be famous all along and believed she was superior to her sister, and was basically ‘letting’ her have the spotlight in a patronizing way that made her unlikeable to me after that. i have no interest in a battle between two famous daughters who both believe they’re entitled to the crown and look down on each other.
meanwhile their abusive father takes his grief out on his weirdly-straight son...whose very first scene is SO queer-coded, leander and i were genuinely shocked he was sleeping with his sister’s wife.
if it isn’t painfully clear, i found the show really boring, and was forced to realize that i just don’t watch shows like this anymore. shows where the story is just ‘these people are conventionally attractive and interacting in today’s world and everything is very dramatic but their problems bore me.’
i watch a lot of dramas with supernatural or scifi or procedural elements now and comedies that also know how to make me cry...the only exception i could come up with after days of trying is succession, which feels so well-crafted and shakespearean that i never even think of it as a plain drama or a soap.
i wish i could say the music made the experience worth it, but i don’t enjoy classic country music much and that style is really prominent. there was one anna friel song that was kind of good, and one scene where the grandson sings--but it was only his voice i liked and he was singing with his grandfather. i read that there would be a ‘born this way’ cover and was looking forward to that, but it didn’t happen in the episodes i watched.
i’m happy to move on now, and needed to rant, because the viewing made for a fun discussion and hanging out experience but i cannot believe--given the people involved--what bad television it was.
