5/7 Book Deals
Happy Friday, everyone! I hope your week has gone well. :) It’s been a stressful/anxiety-filled week for me, but at the same time this was also my last week ever of grad school, so there’s that positivity. And I’m getting my second vaccine shot tomorrow, so hooray for that. How are you all doing? I hope your week wasn’t too bad and that things are okay for everyone. :) Things are still so weird in the world and I know it’s been hard for a lot of people.
There are some really great deals for books that are on sale today, so be sure to have a look if you want to get some books for weekend reading. :) I read Yangsze Choo’s The Ghost Bride years ago and I’ve been meaning to re-read it and read her latest release, she’s a fantastic writer! Alison Weir is also a great choice, and I’ve heard good things about a lot of these. I was sent a copy of Ninth Street Women by the publisher back when it came out and it’s a huge tome, so definitely get some bang for your buck on that one, haha.

🏵️👑An overview of England's First Christian Queen Regnant: Mary (I) of the Tudor Dynasty, the "Unhappiest Lady in Christendom" 👑🏵️
Tumblr media
On the 18th of February 1516, Princess Mary Tudor was born. Her parents were King Henry VIII and his first Consort, Queen Katherine of Aragon. The long awaited Prince turned out to be a girl. While this was a minor disappointment on her parents, they were nevertheless joyful and considered this as a sign of good will. After all, Henry had replied to the Venetian Ambassador “if it was a daughter this time, by the grace of God, sons will follow.”
Immediately after her birth, the child was cleaned and presented to her parents. Two days later she was christened at the Church of the Observant Friars. Following tradition, her parents were not present. Her godparents were Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (who was fast becoming a favorite of her father), the Duchess of Norfolk and her grand-aunt, Catherine of York, Countess of Devon. Present at the ceremony were an army of courtiers; gentlemen, ladies, earls and bishops who were in awe of their new Princess.
After she was blessed, she was given the name Mary, her paternal aunt who had risked royal wrath a few years back, but had worked things out with her brother. Henry had always felt closer to his younger sister than his older one, and now was honoring her even further by naming his only surviving child after her.
Afterwards, she was plunged three times into the basin of holy water, then anointed with holy oil, dried, swaddled and finally taken to the high alter where it was proclaimed:
“God send and give good life and long unto the right high, right noble and excellent Princess Mary, Princess of England and daughter of our most dread sovereign lord the King’s Highness.”
Mary’s life would not be without struggle. She was constantly under suspicion and despite her father’s actions -influenced by her last stepmother, Katherine Parr- to restore her and her half-sister to the line of succession, she still had many enemies and her troubles continued well into her brother’s reign. Following her half-brother’s death, she rallied the people to her cause after she found out the King had taken his sisters out of the line of succession in favor of their cousins, the Grey sisters.
Mary’s popular revolt was astounding because she reclaimed her birthright without the need for bloodshed. After Mary’s forces became too much for the new regime, the Council turned their backs on her cousin and her family, and sent her a letter, pledging their allegiance to her.
Mary was declared Queen and she entered the city of London triumphantly. Months later she was crowned Queen of England, becoming the country’s first female monarch.
Mary’s reign however wasn’t easy. Once more she faced a lot of disagreement and tragedy, as well as an inability to bring what her dynasty needed the most: a male heir. Mary’s phantom pregnancies became an embarrassment to her, and her contributions became forgotten and attributed to her sister (who also appropriated her motto on her coronation progress). To make matters worse, her wishes to be buried next to her mother (as well as having her mother’s body moved to Westminster) were never carried out. She was given a modest plaque. Her eulogy changed to fit the new rhetoric of Elizabeth’s reign being a godsend as opposed to Mary’s. And after her sister died, her successor James Stuart, created an elaborate monument and put the two sisters together. But only Elizabeth’s effigy was included, Mary was once again absent except in the plaque that read:
"Partners both in throne and grave. Here rest we, two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, in the hopes of the resurrection.”
David Loades lists Mary I’s achievements in a BBC History Magazine article he did in honor of England’s first Queen. These include:
- Preservation of the Tudor succession
- Strengthening of the position of Parliament by using it for her religious settlement.
- Establishment of the “gender free” authority of the crown
- Restoration and strengthening of the administrative structure of the church.
- Maintenance of the navy and reforming the militia.
In her book Mary Tudor. Princess, Bastard, Queen, Anna Whitelock adds more, saying that she refounded various universities. Linda Porter in her biography Myth of Bloody Mary also adds that she established a curriculum that brought an emphasis to Humanism, and forced every priest to serve their parish and had very little tolerance for those that didn’t bend their knee to royal authority.

Need a Little Help Here Booklr
Hey everyone!
I’m currently working on a project for my Collection Development course and for that I have to build a hypothetical library collection. Naturally, I leapt at the chance of making a teen/YA Queer Lit collection. I’ve made a rough list of half the titles I plan to put on the full list, which should be about 50 titles.
Some of these titles I’ve read, some I haven’t, so if I have messed up in describing them let me know! Also, I’m trying to go for most inclusive collection I can make, so if you have any recommendations for other titles let me know! I’m currently on the lookout for more Queer YA Nonfiction Titles, Disabled Queer YA Lit, Pansexual Lit, and any books that would be helpful for allies to learn how to support Queer People.

Wanted Opposites!
This isn’t a very important post, especially when I should be doing drafts but if anyone has these faceclaims to go against any of mine, platonically, romantic, strangers, etc. HMU! (MESSAGES!) I will probably already be attached because I just adore ocs, but even better with these fcs. Don’t be discouraged though if you have none, it’s just a post to put out there if you’re interested in checking it out. I will roleplay with the majority of faceclaims except the ones on my banned list. Of course I’ll be open to writing against these faceclaims with any of my other muses, these are just first thoughts.
** Please bring me your underused faceclaims, poc, ladies, nb, older, etc! They don’t get much love in the indie rpc.
I tried my hardest not to repeat as there are several fcs I’d like for other characters too, but,
Below the cut is the list:
Angelica Ward:
Dominique P. Chalkley, Kat Barrell, Shamir Anderson, Paige Turco, Natalie Krill, Jodelle Ferland, Megan Follows, Zoie Palmer, Anna Silk, Ksenia Solo.
Brooklyn Nash:
Cameron Monoghan, Shanola Hampton, Emma Greenwell, Laura Slade Wiggins, Jane Levy, Joel Kinnaman, Ruby Rose, Dermot Mulroney.
Cody Jane:
Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Alexis Demie, Margaret Qualley, Elliot Fletcher, Noel Fischer,
Corrine Walker:
Charley Weber, Viola Davis, Matt McGorry, Tom Verica, Karla Souza, AJA Naomi King, Alfred Enoch, Alexis Bledel, Barry Sloan, Keiko Agena.
Dionne Davis:
Kristen Bell, D’Arcy Carden, jode Comer, Sandra Oh, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, Manny Jacinto, Emma Stone, Tiya Sircar, Adam Scott, Leslie Grossman, Stephan Merchant.

Third Thursday events and exhibitions for October 17
The next Third Thursday — the monthly evening of art in Athens, Georgia — is scheduled for Thursday, October 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. This month will offer four events in addition to the exhibitions. None of the venues will be closed.
This Third Thursday announces the addition of a new venue: Creature Comforts Brewing Co.’s CCBC Gallery. Creature Comforts’ taproom is located at 271 W. Hancock Ave., in downtown Athens; like all other Third Thursday venues, admission is free and all ages are allowed. CCBC Gallery art shows are presented by Get Artistic, Creature Comforts’ community impact program to support the arts. After its inaugural Third Thursday this month, the gallery will be dark in November and December, returning in January.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co.’s CCBC Gallery
“Creatures of the Night” — A Halloween-inspired installation of fantastical creature silhouettes designed by artist Elinor Saragoussi. Nearly a dozen of the artist’s sketches will be transformed into larger-than-life paper cut-outs that are then pasted onto Creature Comforts’ tasting room walls. Saragoussi is an illustrator, designer, textile artist and musician in Athens.
Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia
Lecture: Gavin Pretor-Pinney, 5:30 p.m. — In his talk, “Cloudspotting For Beginners,” Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, takes you on an illustrated tour of the sky. He shows how to recognize many of the varied and beautiful cloud formations, including how various cloud types appear in works of art in the museum’s permanent collection.
Yoga in the Galleries, 6 p.m. — Join us for a yoga class surrounded by works of art in the galleries. Led by instructors from Five Points Yoga, this program is free and open to both beginner and experienced yogis. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis; tickets are available at the front desk starting at 5:15 p.m. Yoga mats provided.
On view:
“Mary Lee Bendolph: Quilted Memories” — This survey exhibition features three decades’ worth of quilts created by artist Mary Lee Bendolph.
“Before the War: Photographs of Syria by Peter Aaron” — Peter Aaron’s photographs of Syrian monuments, many of which are now destroyed.
“Storytelling in Renaissance Maiolica” — Colorful tin-glazed earthenware from 16th-century Italy, including two new acquisitions by the museum.
“Drama and Devotion in Baroque Rome” — Paintings on loan from the Museum and Gallery at Bob Jones University that show the influence of Caravaggio, including works by Rubens, Orazio Gentileschi and Simon Vouet.
“Rachel Whiteread” — Five cast-stone sculptures by Rachel Whiteread reinterpret the artist’s earlier resin castings of the space beneath chairs.
Permanent Collection — Thirteen galleries house a large portion of the Georgia Museum of Art’s collection, including many of the 100 American paintings that made up Alfred Heber Holbrook’s founding gift.
Lamar Dodd School of Art Galleries, University of Georgia
“Kiki Kogelnik, Julia Scher, Erika Vogt, Lisa Williamson” — A group show that examines technology in relation to the human body, performance and formal representations of the female figure.
“Codified Color” — Dodd graduate students Mary Gordon, Christina Foard and Nick Abrami employ color to examine personal histories.
“Baci from Cortona” — Celebrating 50 years of UGA in Cortona, this show features a series of photographs, both professional and personal, that document this history.
“Immortal Beloved” — Dodd MFA candidate Robby Toles challenges authenticity as the artist’s image takes precedence over place and questions where the ‘real’ might exist if everything is performed.
Lyndon House Arts Center

This year, renowned watercolorist and juror Myrna Wacknov selected 64 works out of 194 entries. All artists are living and working in Georgia, and share their love of water-based mediums.
“This Is It!” — Features artists balancing their practice while working in the service industry.  Among the artists included in the exhibit are Lucy Calhoun, Toby Cole, Chris Collins, Kayla Cox, Jess Dunlap, Alexei Gural, Anna LeBer, Tim Root, Maximos Salzman, Elinor Saragoussi, Jessica Smith, Vernon Thornsberry and Robyn Waserman.

The Classic Center
Opening reception during Third Thursday, with light refreshments and a cash bar.
On view:
“Good Vibrations” — Taking a note from the Beach Boys, this show celebrates the end of the summer easing us on a smooth, harmonious, feel good transition into fall. Brittainy Lauback photographs cruise life, capturing the seascapes and portraits aboard a Carnival ship. Warren Slater draws from his Australian upbringing and interest in Aboriginal mark-making to create his pulsating pointillist landscapes picturing beaches and surf culture. Hannah Betzel’s vivid abstractions vibrate almost musically, conjuring images of the sea.
“Building Facades” — In Gallery II, on the second floor, Mike Landers’ solo exhibition of sophisticated, symmetric, minimally composed photographs will take you down memory lane. Images of Barnett’s Newsstand, Helix and the Gap will make you nostalgic for nights wandering downtown Athens of the late 1990s and early 2000s and make you realize how much has changed.
