Alvin Childress
Tumblr media
Alvin Childress (September 15, 1907 – April 19, 1986) was an American actor, who is best known for playing the cabdriver Amos Jones in the 1950s television comedy series Amos 'n' Andy.
Alvin Childress was born in Meridian, Mississippi. He was educated at Rust College, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. When he initially entered college, Childress intended to become a doctor, enrolling in typical pre-med courses. He had no thoughts of becoming involved in acting, but became involved in theater outside of classes. Childress and Rex Ingram in the Federal Theatre Project production of Haiti (1938)
Childress's first wife was the former Alice Herndon, who established herself as a successful writer and actress under the name of Alice Childress (1916–1994); the couple was married from 1934 to 1957 and had a daughter, Jean Rosa. From 1961 to 1973, Childress worked as an unemployment interviewer for the Los Angeles Department of Personnel and in the Civil Service Commission of Los Angeles County.
Childress moved to New York City and became an actor with Harlem's Lafayette Players, a troupe of stock players associated with the Lafayette Theatre. Soon, he was engaged as an actor in the Federal Theater Project, the American Negro Theater, and in all-black race film productions such as Keep Punching (1939). His greatest success on the stage was his performance as Noah in the popular drama, Anna Lucasta, which ran for 957 performances. He also worked at Teachers College of Columbia University. Childress also operated his own radio and record store in New York City. When he learned about casting for the Amos 'n' Andy television series, Childress decided to audition for a role. He was hired a year before the show went on the air.
In 1951, he was cast as the level-headed, hard-working and honest Amos Jones in the popular television series, The Amos 'n' Andy Show, which ran for two years on CBS. Childress originally tried out for the role of The Kingfish, but Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden cast him as Amos. Since he had been hired a year before the show began, Gosden and Correll turned the search for an actor to play "The Kingfish" over to Childress. In a 1979 interview, Childress shared information about some of the candidates. Cab Calloway was considered but found wanting by Gosden because of his straight hair. Childress said there were many famous men, with and without actual acting experience, who wanted to play the role. Eventually, old-time vaudeville comedian Tim Moore was cast as the Kingfish.
Shortly after the television show had ended, plans to turn it into a vaudeville act were announced in 1953, with Childress, Williams and Moore playing the same roles as they had in the television series. It is not known if there were any performances. In 1956, after the television show was no longer in production, Childress and some of his fellow cast members: Tim Moore, Spencer Williams, and Lillian Randolph along with her choir, began a tour of the US as "The TV Stars of Amos 'n' Andy". The tour was halted by CBS as the network considered this an infringement of their rights to the program and its cast of characters. Despite the threats which ended the 1956 tour, Childress, along with Moore, Williams and Johnny Lee were able to perform one night in 1957 in Windsor, Ontario, apparently without legal action. When he tried for work as an actor, Childress found none as he was typecast as Amos Jones. For a short time, Childress found himself parking cars for an upscale Beverly Hills restaurant.
Childress also appeared in roles on the television series Perry Mason, Sanford and Son, Good Times and The Jeffersons and in the films Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and The Day of the Locust (1975). When Childress appeared as a minister in a 1972 episode of Sanford and Son, he was reunited with two former cast members: Lillian Randolph of Amos 'n' Andy in the role of Aunt Hazel and Lance Taylor, Jr. of Anna Lucasta, with the role of Uncle Edgar.
Childress suffered from diabetes and other ailments. He died at age 78 on April 19, 1986, in Inglewood, California. He was buried at National Memorial Harmony Park in Landover, Maryland.

Marking the 125th anniversary of William Morris’s death, this is the most wide-ranging, comprehensive – and beautiful – illustrated study of William Morris ever published
William Morris's interests were wide-ranging: he was a poet, writer, political and social activist, conservationist and businessman, as well as a brilliant and original designer and manufacturer. This book explores the balance between Morris's various spheres of activity and influence, places his art in the context of its time and explores his ongoing and far-reaching legacy. A pioneer of the Arts & Crafts Movement, William Morris (1834-1896) is one of the most influential designers of all time. Morris turned the tide of Victorian England against an increasingly industrialized manufacturing process towards a rediscovered respect for the skill of the maker. Morris's whole approach still resonates today, and his designs are popular and much admired. Published to mark the 125th anniversary of Morris's death, this book includes contributions from a wide range of Morris experts, with chapters on painting, church decoration and stained glass, interior decoration, furniture, tiles and tableware, wallpaper, textiles, calligraphy and publishing. Additional materials include a contextualized chronology of Morris's life and a list of public collections around the world where examples of Morris's work may be seen today. This study is a comprehensive, fully illustrated exploration of a great thinker and artist, and essential reading for anyone interested in the history of design.

Bee Garden Design Document
1. Game Overview:
Purpose/Goal: A relaxing game I would like to play. As a study to improve my game development skills. To render stylized honey and flowers in a painterly way.
Genre: Idle simulation.
Target Audience: Casual gamers and VR enthusiasts interested in short play sessions.
2. Story & Setting:
Narrative: The player assumes the role of a new beekeeper who aims to unlock six special honeys. The journey involves planting, harvesting, and decoding riddles to determine the correct flowers.
Setting: A tranquil field featuring a beehive and four dedicated plots of land for planting.
3. Gameplay Mechanics:
Core Mechanics: Players plant seeds which grow into flowers. Bees then utilize these flowers to produce honey.
Objectives: Plant seeds, grow flowers, and decipher clues or riddles to produce six distinct honeys.
Challenges: Determine which flowers are necessary for each unique honey and the process for growing them.
Progression: Unlocking pages in a journal with each new flower grown. Harvested flowers are stored in a vase for viewing.
4. Characters & Entities:
Main Characters/Entities:
Player (First-person perspective): The new beekeeper on a journey to complete their honey collection.
Swarm of Bees: The swarm moves between the hive and the flowers. When the garden is empty, or honey is ready the bees buzz around it. They interact with flowers when collecting pollen.(This is a stretch-goal, they might just be static around the hive)
5. User Interface (UI):
Main UI Elements: Physical notebook (for game menu and progress), alert boxes, indicators for clickable objects.
Controls: Click-based interactions for PC and VR.
6. Art & Design:
Art Style: Painterly styled 3D, inspired by Anna Mason's watercolor flowers. See moodboard for more info.

Introduction by Stevem Craig Hickman
Andrew talking about the literature of exclusion:
"Of the literature of exclusion examined so far, only Siratori's glitch poetics would technically be electronic literature. The other works conform more to the definition of the literature of exclusion: works that confront the existential and ontological instance when meaning can no longer be grasped as a result of the authorship of cultural narratives shifting increasingly further away from human storytelling to the algorithmic functionalities of the apparatus."
Wenaus, Andrew C.. Literature of Exclusion: Dada, Data, and the Threshold of Electronic Literature
I think that's where we're at in the digital arts. It's now a collective enterprise, open and bound to the modalities of the whole planetary platform of open-source images. The idea of copyright is old school and is now going to be excluded in favor of a collective open world of creativity. It may be a battle for many decades to come but it will come, a new economy will supervene and change across the board. All these old school critics of capitalism are still bound to dead notions for a dead world. We live in the posthuman era beyond the staid humanistic individual and its sense of identity and ownership. Obviously here in the States people won't buy into such notions as of yet, but it won't matter they will because their children will be born into that world. Technology is changing the way capitalism works without politics even being a part of it. Politics is dead. Most of the world goes on without acknowledging the local political and social environments in which it operates. Capitalism just masks itself and goes about its business doing what must be done to continue in its own direction with technology. Capitalism is and never has been against technology, only ever conforming to the needs of its negotiations. As Andrew puts it: "The literature of exclusion is a print tradition grieving, revolting, or confused at the confrontation with the ontological implications that digitality and apparatus imply. "What they imply is nothing less than the end of the print tradition as a whole , and commodity and consumption era that supported it. Oh, consumption want go away it will become digital and a never-ending supply chain of automated digitality in every field will open up in an endless realm of readymade art, literature, etc. will be there for a mass digital consumer. In many ways the global internet has become a digital Disneyland of fakes, a world where everything is become artificial and artificializing us in process. We were always just images of images, now we will become ready-mades for and endless public digifest diet. In a black mirror world, the human has been excluded. We are all just bits and bytes in continuous parade of give and take negotiations. The flesh and blood body are not here, only the virtual avatar counts as our double and ally living in a virtual world of illusive and illusionary images. Baudrillard came just as all this was being born but had already brought the cynical gaze to its birth. Philosophers did away with foundations and essences in the past century and left us with this abyss of electronic mayhem. James Joyce conceived it on Anna-Livia-Plurabella, goddess of muck and mud bequeathing to us an etymsmashed world of punstership insanity. What Joyce wanted was to leave behind the nightmare of history... we're doing it now. A transitional era in which the partnership between human and machine intelligence is being born is now. The cat is out of the bag, there is no way back now. We are the first generation of a new era. Let's do this.
