“If you had married Roy Gardner, now,” continued Gilbert mercilessly, “you could have been ‘a leader in social and intellectual circles far away from Four Winds.’“
“Gilbert Blythe!”
“You know you were in love with him at one time, Anne.”
“Gilbert, that’s mean— ‘pisen mean, just like all the men,’ as Miss Cornelia says. I never was in love with him. I only imagined I was. You know that. You know I’d rather be your wife in our house of dreams and fulfillment than a queen in a palace.”
Anne’s House of Dreams, Chapter 14 “November Days”
"We make our own lives wherever we are, after all ... college can only help us to do it more easily. They are broad or narrow according to what we put into them, not what we get out. Life is rich and full here ... everywhere ... if we can only learn how to open our whole hearts to its richness and fullness." -LM Montgomery, Anne of Avonlea
Man, Kevin Sullivan really flattened these excellent words of wisdom from Mrs. Allan to Anne on the importance (or not) of Anne going to college into the generally cheesy aphorism of, "I went looking for my dreams outside myself and discovered it's not what the world holds for you, it's what you bring to it," didn't he?
(Also, wow is this akin to what Miss Fowler tells Emily in Maud Hart Lovelace's Emily of Deep Valley over a similar theme of whether college is necessary to the building of a full and rich life: "You've discovered, I see, that we have to build our lives out of what materials we have. It's as though we were given a heap of blocks and told to build a house ..." I guess Mrs. Allan and Miss Fowler would have been kindred spirits.)

Top row: A black typewriter with white paper in it, on a white background; a field of lavender plants; a picture of an unlabeled bottle of red wine with grapes, an apple, and two unlit tea candles on a table, with the idea that the wine stands in for the raspberry cordial Anne and Diana accidentally get drunk on in AOGG. Middle row: a purple square with diagonal yellow cursive text reading “for as long as the sun and moon shall endure” (the length of time Anne and Diana promise to be loyal bosom friends for; a picture of two girls with their heads bent together, one white with short reddish hair, one Asian with black hair; gold confetti pieces shaped like the word “love”, arranged on a white background. "Oh!" Anne sighed. "Marilla told me to get home soon, but the woods have so much to explore!"
"Meow?" Answered Diana.
"You are right, my lady. As always!" Anne replied, picking the cat up and hugging her with such tenderness and love.
"Oh, if only other people could understand you the way I do."
