i strongly believe that patton sanders, fans of patton sanders, and the general attitude towards patton sanders says A LOT about modern fandom “culture” and how toxic and uncreative it is becoming.
just to preface this post is absolutely no hate to thomas sanders. he’s an amazing creator and he can’t control how his fans interpret his work. moving right along!
in many fandoms, there are archetypes (typical roles that characters in media play), and there is nothing wrong with an archetype until the fandom prioritizes archetypes over characterization. a surface level example would be something like “prince charming from cinderella is a kind, sensitive man who doesn’t have the most common sense, but he’s got a big heart and a lot of love to share. but instead of creating fan work or headcanons or “kinning” that character with/because of those traits, the fandom just sees him as the one who saves cinderella. the savior. and that’s it.”
the big, number one archetype that modern fandoms have developed is “the uwu, smol, soft bean who is so innocent and can do no wrong.” an amplified and much more annoying version of the professional term “ingenue”. an ingenue (or ingenu) is a character in media who is very young and innocent, and tends to make big mistakes as a result of their youth and innocence. romeo and juliet are ingénus. anne shirley cuthburt is an ingénue. i like to argue that roman sanders is an ingenu but that’s a story for another time.
the difference between the “smol soft bean” and the ingenue is that it is clearly established in media that the ingenues are in the wrong, and despite their youth and innocence, their mistakes are present, front and center, and it is obvious to all that they’re in the wrong. of course, it isn’t always black and white. ingenues have been coerced by outside forces, or they’ve had turbulent pasts that have caused them to not know any better, but it is generally understood that these things are explanations. not excuses.
when fans talk about their “smol soft beans”, there is generally an attitude of superiority when it comes to them. “no no, that’s my wittle cinnamon role, they could never be a bully/abuser! they’re so clearly innocent and sweet!” when that character has indeed said and done awful things to others repeatedly. “my smol soft bean is always the victim and everyone else is always mean to them!” when that character clearly is not always the victim and is being mistreated by other characters as a form of retaliation or breach of trust. oftentimes, the modern fandom’s perception of a character overrides the actual actions of the character in the canon and i will explain why that’s problematic in the next paragraph.
this worlds generation has a huge, giant, collective victim complex. but it’s only natural. that’s just what happens when people go on the internet and see all of these “smol soft beans” being protected and adored, and their mistakes are being ignored. everybody wants that. deep down, everybody wants their mistakes to be erased, and for only the very best parts of them to be on display at all times. so they infantilize themselves, trying to make themselves act and look sweet and innocent and cute, so that way, they can never admit to being wrong. it’s a very imitatable behavior. one that people can emulate easily. and people do.
by now, you all may be like “but ez, what does this have to do with patton?” well, everything. patton is generally seen as the “smol soft bean” archetype in the sanders sides fandom, even though he has done an array of terrible things. here are just a few:
- he regularly ignores and teases logan, endlessly taunting the one singular vocabulary mistake logan made because he thinks it’s funny to make logan look stupid when intelligence is his entire livelihood.
- he guilt trips roman relentlessly and coerced him into making a huge mistake (choosing the wedding), and then when they all faced the consequences of roman’s mistake, patton distanced himself from it, and pretended like it was all roman’s fault that it even happened.
- he was one of remus’ biggest haters, insisting constantly on pressing him down and pretending he doesn’t exist. while all the sides essentially were remus haters (except eventually logan), patton was clearly the most prominent one.
- he infantilized virgil, even when virgil told him he was uncomfortable. he gave a false apology that he didn’t actually act upon, and he made virgil feel small.
again, that’s only a few, but those are some of the biggest ones. oftentimes, the fandom just IGNORES that these things ever happened, or gloss over them, even though they’re some of the most important lessons in the entire sanders sides storyline. people refuse to acknowledge such important truths because they want patton to be a “smol soft bean who does no wrong and is so innocent”.
and patton kinnies tend to take it a whole new level because they’re seeing this character that is being infantilized and reduced to nothing but the sweetest little gumdrop and deciding “i want to be that.” so they say that they kin patton without accepting the mistakes he’s made, or his controlling and abusive tendencies. they want to distance themselves from his mistakes, but capitalize on his innocence, which is an unhealthy way to look at things.
everyone makes mistakes. everyone is in the wrong. nobody is perfectly innocent.
and that’s why i hate patton sanders, the fandom’s attitude towards patton sanders, and pretty much all patton kinnies (unless they’re open about the completeness of pattons character).
please don’t dox me. thanks.

🏅 🌝 👩‍🏭
Hey! Thanks for the ask!
🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).
Oooh definitely my commitment to writing A Second Chance. I’ve been writing fanfiction since I was 13 and I used to write lots of multi-chapter fics but in recent years I’ve only been writing one-shots. It’s been so nice to be really inspired by an idea again - especially by Swanfire 💛.
🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?
There are so many! I would love to write fanfic for Anne with and E and about Anne Shirley-Cuthburt, especially a fic that continues the series because it ended too soon 😭
👩‍🏭 If one of your fics was going to get you arrested, which one and why?
Umm okay this ones a doozy just let me explain. So, it’s not available anymore but when I was 16 I wrote a Swanfire smut fanfiction and posted it on my account.
Now, why is this bad?
Well, in the fanfic Neal was 20 while Emma was 17. Of course, being age 16/17 myself, I saw nothing wrong with this as long as it was consensual. It’s worth noting that the age of consent in my country is also 16. But after turning 20, and then 21 myself, I am absolutely horrified by the prospect of dating a teenager, let alone someone underage. Yeah, safe to say it’s deleted but I still really like the story within it so maybe one day a heavily-edited version might end back up on my page who knows.
Anyway, that was quite a heavy topic. Sorry about that.
Thanks again for asking 😊

THOUGHTS SO FAR ON ST4 (eps 1+2)
***SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS IN THIS POST***
....…............................................………………………………………………
OK, IT'S SO GOOD TO SEE THEM ALL AGAIN! THEY'VE ALL GROWN SO MUCH AND THEY'RE REALLY SHOWING THAT WITH THE SUBJECTS IN THESE EPS SO FAR.
I LIVE FOR THE BYERS FAMILY OK AND EL BEING ANOTHER ADDITION TO IT. SHE'S LOOKING LIKE A MINI JOYCE. I LIIIIIVE FOR THE WILL AND EL BEING SIBLINGS OF IT ALL. I'VE WANTED THIS FOR SO LONG. WILL BEING CONCERNED FOR HER AS WELL AS SUPPORTIVE. I NEED MOOOORE.
ELEVEN- Oh el, you're really going through it. Those bullies are the worst and the fact she hasn't told Joyce and only Will knows... SHE IS A SWEET CINNAMON ROLL (who could kill you if she had powers) AND THE NERVE OF ANGELA TO EVEN TALK SH*T ABOUT HER PARENT WHO IS DEAD LIKE SERIOUSLY????? NO WONDER EL HIT YOU WITH A SKATE. I mean, it was bad and she really just jumped over punching (yes I shouldn't condone violence but ANGELA WAS THE WORST) like her dad does, to skate slap. At least the teacher picked up on this bullying.
Will- LET ME JUST START BY SAYING HOW DISAPPOINTED I AM THAT ONE FIGURE LOOKING AT A BURNING CAR SHOT WASN'T WILL. I NEED WILL TO HAVE POWERS. Ok but will just getting absolutely ignored by Mike was such a sh*tty move. Oh Will is going through it with him. They're really going through with it after all the crumbs turned obvious. It's just a matter of if they'll have Mike reciprocate those feelings (I'm only here for jopper with ships tbh but this would be everything. Also I'm just not feeling m*leven like eh. Sorry.)
JOYCE- JOYCE I'VE MISSED YOU. HER AND MURRAY ALREADY MY FAVE DUO. ALSO HI JAQUEN H'GHAR. JOYCE GO RESCUE YOUR MAN, BRING HIM HOME TO HIS DAUGHTER, GO ON YOUR DATE, KISS AND JOIN THEM FAMILIES.
ARGYLE AND EDDIE ARE EVERYTHING I LOVE THEM.
I LOVE THE D&D/BASKETBALL SCENE. EDITING IS *CHEF KISS* ERICA IS STILL ICONIC.
STEVE & ROBIN- AN ICONIC DUO. STILL GOT IT. LIVE FOR THEM TALKING ABOUT GIRLS TOGETHER AND THE CALLBACK TO THE TAMMY THOMPSON JOKE THEY HAVE. ALSO HI ANNE SHIRLEY CUTHBURT.
MAX- THIS GIRL NEEDS HUGS AND A BLANKET. HOW CAN SHE EVEN TALK ABOUT ALL THE STUFF WITH THE COUNSELOR WHEN ITS SUPERNATURAL STUFF?
THE VECNA STUFF IS TERRIFYING (AND HE TOTALLY POSSESSED BABY EL IF ALL THOSE SIMILARITIES WITH THE BREAKING BONES ARE SOMETHING) BUT DAMN HIS DESIGN IS AMAZING. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS SEASON WILL GO BUT IM SO EXCITED.

she thinks she is ugly and impossibleto love
when it is quite the oppisite
i wish i was her
i wish my mind was as beautiful as hers,
i wish my hair was not a boring color like brown,

Goodbye Sun
in which pain overpowers love.
gilbert blythe x gn!reader
genre: breakup; angst
Gilbert did not turn when Y/N called his name. He kept walking, despite the pleas that echoed in the woods. Did it hurt him to leave? Yes. But was he going to stay? No.
“Gilbert. Gilbert, please! You have to believe me!” Y/N cried with cold tears running down their face. With their eyes swollen, runny nose, and shuddering figure it was almost hard for him to not stop and hold them in his arms.
Almost.
Y/N mentally cursed and sped up, reaching for his shoulder.
At the very minute they made contact, Gilbert snapped. He turned around, pushing their grip away harshly. They each shared the same teary eyes, but for very different reasons.
“How could you! And how could you have the audacity to even make me feel sorry for you?” He shouted at them. While pointing behind Y/N, he had trouble speaking his next words. “You... you hurt me!”
They shook their head. “No, no. I didn’t mean to hurt you. You have to believe me, Gil, please-”
“How could I even believe anything you say right now? Why should I?”
Y/N was at a loss for words. “Because... because-”
His eyes narrowed and he let out a sound of disbelief. “What? Are you going to say that you love me? That you’ll never do it again?”
They lowered their head as more tears fell. Guilt was heavier than love. That was very much prominent at the moment.
Gilbert closed his eyes briefly, trying to relieve some tension. “If you had actually loved me, you wouldn’t have even thought about kissing anyone but me.”
His quiet, heartbroken voice absolutely shattered Y/N’s heart. They covered their face with their cold hands. It wasn’t the pain they felt at the moment that caused so much distress. It was the fact that they had hurt Gilbert, and that there was no excuse for it.
“I’m sorry.” They cried. “Please believe me.”
His eyes fluttered open. They looked so vulnerable. It was almost pitiful. He hated to see them cry. It was the last thing he’d ever want to see. Gilbert wanted to reach out, and hold them in his arms and mend them both back together.
But that was impossible now.
He took in a deep breath. The chilly weather surrounding them both was suffocating them. He could feel the sun setting, and wondered how life would be when he saw it again.
Y/N couldn’t bear to face Gilbert. It was devastating, but it was no one’s fault but theirs. They would have to live with that guilt until they died. Would I remember it, they wondered, after so much time had passed?
Their hands fell to the side when they felt warmth. Looking up slowly, Gilbert had removed his jacket and placed it around their shoulders. He then removed his scarf, wrapping it tightly around their neck. He pulled away with no emotion.
“I hate it,” he mumbled. “How I still want to love you. I hate it so much, it’s just about kills me.”
Without meeting their stare, he turns around and continues to walk through the woods, leaving Y/N alone with the last bit of warmth they would ever receive from him. It was a goodbye, an ending, for them.
Y/N’s shoulders shook as they watched his figure disappear slowly with the sun. Their hand clamped over their mouth to suppress a sob, but their knees trembled and they fell to the ground.
Yes, they concluded. They would remember the guilt for the rest of this life, and the next.

So Anne and Gilbert named their twins Anne and Diana right? Well it had me thinking...
Diana (di) Blythe has red hair and is the kindred spirit to Walter. She looks just like Anne (she is also stated to be Gilbert’s favorite several times). She loves poetry. She has a great imagination.
Anne (Nan) Blythe is described as very pretty. She had dark hair and eyes. She is described as a “dainty little maiden” (Rainbow valley, chapter 3) Anne is very proud that her daughter is so beautiful. She is said to be “Blithe in nature and in name.” (Rainbow valley, chapter 3)
SO my point is this: when Anne looks at Nan she sees what she always wanted to be: beautiful just like her best friend Diana. I think she’s proud that her namesake has the grace and beauty she envied as a child.
But I also think about what Diana Barry sees when she looks at Di. I think she’s proud for the same reason. Because growing up she stated that she would rather have an amazing imagination than be pretty. So when she looks at her namesake she also gets to live out a childhood dream... to be like Anne.
Tumblr media
Anne and Diana both got to see themselves the way they dreamed they could be as children, through the twins.

Diana, honey what's wrong?
Why was Diana so weird this episode? Like up untill now she seemed to genuinely like jerry, but that comment about him being "at least a handsome creature" like EXCUSE ME? she basically told him he lucky he's pretty, which is that she thinks he's dumb. Because he didn't understand Frankenstein the same way she did, which should have been obvious, because you know, he only just learned how to read English! Like this is probably the first book he's read in English. And then she just tried to brush that aside! And only wanted to kiss him! (Also you could tell after that kiss, he was upset that she said that to him)
And when he spoke to Anne! He cared about her so much and was clearly hurt by Diana. And Anne having to come to the realization that her friend Diana was the one doing those terrible things to Jerry.
Also, Diana trying to tell Anne that this thing with Jerry didn't matter, and basically that it was just rebellion (which is to some extent fine, if both parties feel the same way). That part really bothers me because up untill this episode. She doesn't seem to think about him as just a way to rebel but she seems to care for him.
Don't even get me started on the rest of that scene where Diana and Anne friend "break up"
