I am but an olive tree in Gods green pastures. David the poor sheppard boy was overlooked, abandoned, rejected and under- estimated by his own family. Like King David I will be introduced as a woman of God and blessed with a man after the Lords own heart.

PENGUINS

FOR MY BIRTHDAY

You get to ask questions while the penguins run around doing their thing. What's hilarious is YOU can't touch them. But they can touch you.

Which is how I got pecked by the smaller, feistier penguin of the mated pair. 😂

(Picture below of smol spitfire penguin taken 10 seconds before she wandered over and pecked me, so I think she's the Jane penguin in the Matt-Jane penguin partnership)

Zookeeper: I am so sorry she-

Me trying not to laugh too hard as I am pecked: I have a dog and cats and a snake so this bothers me less than you'd think

Things I learned:

These are HUMBOLT penguins, which live in Peru! They are ENDANGERED.

They nest with PEBBLES!

The way they do not crush their eggs when they sit on them (because they do not carry their eggs on their feet like Antarctic penguins) is a small slit in their bellies leading to a little skin pouch. They open it to surround, cradle, and warm the egg!

SPINY MOUTHES ARE REAL.

They are monogamous and generally form lifelong partnerships. These two have been together 13 years!

To court, these penguins bow their heads and alternate which eye they look at the other penguin with. They also stretch their head up, flap their wings, and do a long donkey bray call when trying to call to their mate or attract one. Hilariously, we got to hear their donkey bray call and it was so loud the keeper had to stop talking. 😂

THEIR FEET MAKE SLAPPY SOUNDS, THIS IS NOT SCIENTIFIC, I JUST THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW.
