okay okay so i was rewatching 'smartie kid" right and there's a moment right before mk gets his gold vision back where for like a frame his eyes flash blue and it's such a quick thing that i didn't notice it the first times i watched it and maybe my brain is webbed up in conspiracy theories but that feels significant? like the writers probably don't mean for people to go through frame by frame or anything but with all the foreshadowing they've shoved into this show it feels like anything could be important??

Anon I will ask you this question—if it didn't matter and the writers don't mean for viewers to go through frame by frame, why include it at all? This is the first moment in s3 where MK uses his powers after supposedly "losing" them at the end of s2, so it's pretty significant. There's totally a reason they had MK's eyes flash blue during this scene. I think it suggest something along the lines of EAMK (Eldritch Abomination MK Theory—aka MK was something terrible in a past life and then sealed in the stone, hatching out a beautiful baby boy), but truly who knows what it's meant to imply.

There are also plenty of other strange occurrences like MK turning Tang Sanzang's magic blue:

Hell, even MK stopping the Samadhi fire in 3x11 all by himself! It all seems to suggest that MK is not what he seems (which currently it seems like he's a stone monkey, just like Wukong). I think you're picking up on what the writers are putting down anon! There are just a lot of weird details that are culminating somewhere, and I'm pretty excited to see where it goes

The Azure Lion's wikipedia mentions a story about him storming the Queen Mother's peach feast and demanding to be made ruler of Heaven, I don't remember this being mentioned in the Lion Camel Ridge chapters and can't find any other mention of it. Do you recognize a story similar to this or is it completely made up? (or am i remembering the chapter wrong)

It was from the mouth of a lakey that when the Queen Mother didn't send an invite to Azure Lionhe so he tied to FIGHT heaven. But he didn't quite crash the party, nor did he get close to fighting the Jade Emporer really. Just that he was able to take down 100,00 warriors in one go and they were no longer fight.

There could be some confusion because Wukong is the one explaining what HE has done when he was bragging about his weapon in chapter 75.

"I once disturbed with this rod the Hall of Heav'n; Its might broke up the Festival of Peach. Fighting it the devartija had no chance; Against it Nata found the task most hard. Struck by the rod, the gods had no place to hide; One hundred thousand soldiers ran and fled."

This is mostly just him bragging about what he has done and what he can do when he is fighting Azure Lion. At least that is the only connection I could find about anyone talking about the Peach Festival and fighting the Jade Emporer but Wukong is the one doing the talking. Wiki could be confused (as it often is) since both Wukong and Azure Lion have fought celestial soldiers before and also were not invited to the peach festival. Though Azure Lion would be just a pet of Manjusri so... don't know why he thought he was going to get one.

Yet despite also fighting he Lion shows that he was terrified of Wukong when he explained that well, he also didn’t get an invitation to the party, he didn’t just stop at fighting 100,000 soldiers but actually did go and ruined the peach party and he actually did go and fight the Jade Emporer himself.

He just built different.

Geez, it's been awhile since I've disturbed your askbox, hasn't it? I'm not going to lie, I bawled my eyes out on the latest chapter. I started reading JTTA when it was only 9 chapters in and now there's 48!!! Going to be 50!!!! You should be so so proud of yourself!!!!

JTTA has been with me and keeping me happy whenever times got too hard. Sometimes the only thing keeping me sane would be looking forward to the next update. And now we're here!!

For context, I just realized there even was a parallel yesterday while I was watching the opening cutscene - and though I thought I'd share it because people might have some interesting things to say about it, I didn't really think that deep into it myself.

That being said, I thought I'd at least give it a go !! Keep in mind though, this might be pretty disorganized since I am thinking it out at the same time as I am writing it.

Off the top of my mind, there are three important daggers I can think of when playing fe3h. The first one, and perhaps the most significant,  is Edelgard's, that was gifted to her by Dimitri so she could cut her own future. The second one, which I talked about yesterday,  is the one Rhea uses to kill Nemesis. And finally, there is a last one: the one Monica uses to stab Jeralt.

Interestingly enough, Seiros kills Nemesis for revenge- because her people have no future now that they've been genocided, because they themselves will not have the opportunity to cut their own future anymore. This is pretty similar to how Edelgard herself is the only one of her siblings left to build a new world where what they went through will never happen again. Both are motivated by their grief of their loved ones who were ripped away from them.

However, and I think that’s very important- unlike Edelgard, Rhea never really moves on from the grief. She tries so much  to stop such horrible things from happening again that she helps build and preserve a system that is, at its core, centered on a romanticized version of the past (what’s with how she rewrites history) and resistant to change (I believe  it is mentioned at some point in Cindered Shadows that she prohibited the development of the printing press and some medical progress). In that regard, you could say she doesn’t even have a “future” if you consider that with future comes change. She clings to the past while being stuck in a kind of “still life” that is her present- and hoping that she can go back to “the way things were” once she brings her mother back to life.

That makes Edelgard the polar opposite of that. She, too, disregards the present- but only because she herself cannot dwell on the past, and thus considers building what she sees as a better future her priority. Living in the present time isn’t worth it if her work amounts to no significant change, and fast -hence the radicality of her actions compared to the more gradual reforms Claude advocates for. She is the gal who devised a plan to take down Those Who Slither In The Dark with her goth best friend in her twenties, while Rhea barely made a move against them in a thousand years. 

Her act of desperation at the end of Azure Moon, when she tries to kill Dimitri last minute, is because she is unwilling to give up on the future she envisioned, not  a way to avenge the past. Now that I think about it, this is emphasized even more by the fact that her dagger is supposed to kill the one who gave it to her in a past she has no care left for, and barely remembers anyways. But this last action still leaves room for a better future- she doesn’t manage to kill Dimitri.

Rhea uses her dagger so the past can live again- Edelgard uses hers to kill the past.

So, now that I am wayyyy too deep into this to back down- where does Kronya’s dagger fit in all of this ?

Kronya/Monica killing Jeralt is the catalyst for change in Byleth. The one key element that allows for the return of the Goddess in the world of the living (speaking of that, have some cool symbolism about their fusion with Sothis I thought about the other day) . But, even more importantly, Byleth embodies the movement of the world itself, the force of change. They are interminatum, neither God nor mortal, everchanging and undetermined, unpredictable. They are the time that passes ("Byleth interminatum" is also slowly becoming my favorite way to call them but that's another matter entirely).

Without them, the conflict stagnates, torn in the struggle between the past and the future ; because neither Edelgard nor Rhea know how to live in the present. But you know what's pretty cool ?

Byleth never uses their own dagger. They literally have it on at all times but never use it. My guess is, it is exactly because they have been revealed "both sides of time" that they can live in the present without regret, kept in check by all of the ties they have made there with their loved ones. This might even be because they are the only character who was "cut from the world" and felt like they lived outside of it at the beginning of the story, whose entire character arc centers on finding their place into this world. Jeralt's murder is just what triggers this force of change.

Byleth is essential in that they teach both the archbishop and the empress something they have always been lacking- learning to live in the present, to be part of the world again, to open themselves up to others and love. Edelgard never uses her dagger in Crimson Flower because Byleth was there to keep her aware of the consequences her actions have in the here-and-now.

Aaalright, I guess that's a wrap ! Please forgive any mistakes as English isn't my first language. Similarly, I might not have covered everything and it's just me musing, don't hesitate to add anything to this !!! ^^ But the symbolism of the dagger was really cool to think about !!

I was hoping in the S4 Special, we would see Wukong at least try to reconcile with the Brotherhood. We know Wukong and Azure were close, and we spent a lot of time talking about Azure's trauma and feelings of betrayal from Wukong. But we never got to see them at least try to talk it out. The first part of the Special focuses on Wukong's mistakes, and it's all centered around Macaque. I know Mac was his BFF, but Azure was also hurting a lot, too, and that was a big focus this season. The second Wukong gets out, he wants to shove them all back into the scroll. We get a little sad face when Azure dies, but that's really it. Kinda makes me question what the point of Azure's monkey trauma alongside Wukong's regrets were if they weren't gonna even have Wukong attempt to fix things. Also, the Pilgrims sealing the Brotherhood in the scroll. Wukong looking menacing in the flashback. That's never touched on either. All those theories on Wukong possibly striking a deal with the Jade Emperor to protect the Brotherhood or being forced to imprison them. Wukong will fish with DBK and eat popsicles with Macaque, but wont try making peace with his other brothers? IDK, it just feels like there was a lot of wasted potential with this Special, which honestly is nothing new for the series.

Besides the demon kings mentioned as the sworn brothers of Wukong, and the father of Jade Faced Demon and Hu A'qi who are also mentioned as demon kings(?), what other mentions of demon kings are and which of these do the pilgrims kill?

I’m surprised you are not aware but MOST of not all the demons that the pilgrims fight are demons kings. We see that Wukong visited about 72 Demon Kings at the start and out of the 72, Wukong befriended 6 of them. A personal headcanon of mine is that there can only be 72 demons, no reason really just a good number, but that if a demon wishes to be the 'King' they must defeat the old one and take over. Such as Wukong taking down the Demon King of Havoc who was trying to take his territory and his subjects.

That should be all at them at least that I know are Demon Kings. There could be more but the reason I didn't add these demons to the list is that I didn't see them with an army or many servants if at all. So these are more honorary mentions cause they are still powerful demons that COULD be demon kings.

White Bone demon (白骨精) - killed by Wukong

Nine-Tailed Vixen (九尾狐狸) - killed by Wukong

Nine-Headed Insect (九頭蟲) escaped capture by Erlang

White Deer Spirit (白鹿精) subdued for Old Man of the South Pole
