I've been wanting to make a post like this for a while now, and well, having just finished a crucial stage of my life, I think this is a good a time as any.

Like, I Am Going To Mention Every Single One Of My Mutuals By Name long (if you'd rather not be tagged in the future, do warn me)

First of all, the primary purpose of this post is as a letter of thanks for the wonderful months you Tumblr peeps have provided me this year. I am not hesitant to say joining the hellsite was the single best decision I have made in the last 12 months, heck, I think about 2/3rds of the friends I mantain regular contact with nowadays came from here. But this wouldn't be a long post if it was just a brief "thanks y'all for improving my life". I'm gonna get into detail. And I'm gonna be sappy about it. You can't stop me. You're not my mother. And not even my mother could stop me from posting this.

I would've said "I thought long and hard about who I'd start with", if there was any question about it. There isn't. @tearychildren, where do I even fucking begin. I can't really say anything too specific because if I begin I don't think I'll stop and half this post is gonna be about you, and this is already a very long post, so I'm just going to leave it at this, you already know well enough just how much you matter to me.

Going onwards, another of the early spots goes to who I believe was my first mutual, definitely one of the first people I followed, @chlorohexidine, a long-time mutual and recent good friend, our daily chats, however short, never cease to be highlights of my days, your art is really cute (love me some rounded shapes) and brainstorming ideas for your TTRPG campaigns is always fun (I really like your worldbuilding, too). It's only fair to mention your (and my, just needed to make this segue well) good friend @xsenpi, infodumping touhou to you both genuinely got me through that month, and Undertale 2: Revenge of The Robots with Rei and TC has been a blast so far.

@soundsofastar is another that warrants special mention for actually changing my brain chemistry and making me appreciate the local wildlife even more than usual (if we ever meet in person, WE ARE GOING ON A NICE LONG WALK TO LOOK AT BIRDS TOGETHER, WHEREVER IT IS WE ARE WHEN THAT HAPPENS, MARK MY WORDS). Your art also makes me feel things. Not many things make me feel stuff a lot. That is impressive. I should be in a good spot to finish reading the Illuminae Files within the next few days, so please do pester me about it, otherwise the piece of media that the next person I'll talk about recommended to me will consume all the time I'd read it in.

So, the next person I'll talk about, @northwest-cryptid, thanks for letting me use our DMs as my Mabinotepad, and for getting me into Mabinogi in the first place, you've been both the direct and the indirect cause of many good times, and I gotta be honest I kinda admire you a lil' bit (and if you know anything about how I talk, I am horrible at expressing vulnerability, admiration and these sorts of emotions without a bunch of euphemisms unless I'm doing this sort of tangent where I attempt to talk about myself in a more depersonalized way, so what that sentence there essentially means is "I admire you a lot and you are an inspiration").

Another pivotal figure in how this year shaped out is @ratlesshonret, creator of The Bird Nest, site of many good times, who has exposed me and many others to some wonderful media (I AM GOING TO FINISH POCKET MIRROR SOMETIME, MARK MY WORDS), reading through all the chats in the server is usually a blast, too. Your contributions to my life cannot be understated. Seriously, thanks.

The next great friend I'll mention is @transgender-lea-crosscode, we've started talking more only recently, but have already bonded a fair bit, I reckon, damn you're good at Blazblue. You've dared to make me good at the game and for that, I commend you. You should say words about Zeroranger in my general direction sometime, I'd be happy to hear/read them.

Now for those mutuals that I don't really speak to, but are responsible for like, 75% of my total notes, like, everyone is more than welcome to jump into my DMs and start talking about anything whenever, but y'all specifically are folk I'd have started talking with regularly ages ago if I knew what to talk about. @hoshinoreika2004, @ward-leon, @edenplumreal, @tabnk2, @tapok-eve , @boofbv and @sorcerousbrick, thanks for all the lil' dopamine hits.

@genericgirl420 and @mikusays-transrights, you two are the mutuals that suffer the least with The Distances, so let's do this in a more, well, local fashion. breaking the DC streak to go to Marvel because fun fact I've been into DC for six months and into Marvel comics for eight years so

anyway a majority of my spideypool bookmarks are from 2015 and I have no idea if most of them are any good which is an interesting problem to have but I still have a solid list for y'all

Say Anything...Except That - I was following this from the first chapter and I'm now mutuals with the author which was very fanboy moment for me (if you're seeing this, hi!). it has a lot of old school fanfiction.net quirks to it which might be a bit difficult to swallow if you've only been reading fic for a few years, but honestly I think this fic is really good and holds up to this day. it's been a while since I read it last but iirc Deadpool has to protect Spider-Man or Peter from assassination attempts and there's a lot of pining involved. also mattfoggy ended up having a nice arc because this was 2015 and Daredevil had just aired (this is technically incomplete there's one chapter left but if I had to reread it multiple times when there were only like ten chapters you can handle it)

under attack - more fics by people who are wayyy too cool to have followed me back and yet somehow did? anyway this is part of stackthedeck's team red slash series (ELITE ship fyi) but this one is spideypool focused and has some nice fluff. fighting as flirting idk what else to say it's golden

#NoPlaceLikeHome - do y'all know ask-spiderpool? you should it's one of the best blogs on this damn website and a must-read for spideypool shippers. anyway this is that version of spideypool's first time together which is cute :D short and sweet basically. sciderman has a lot of fics for the spiderman fandom in general and their ask-spiderpool au in particular and they're all worth reading

Dissonance - another longfic that took half a decade to write about deadpool protecting spider-man from harm. I actually don't know why this trope is so good peter really can defend himself but there you go

Perfect Enough - ohm y gOD this fic series is so good. this au hinges on such a tiny difference in peter's history but it makes ALL the difference. anyway in this world basically nobody has a functional secret identity anymore except for spider-man. meanwhile, wade wilson and peter parker start dating. so much plot, two separate longfics each around 140k, good luck this CONSUMED my life

speaking of consumed, rippling - this is part of a series called Into the Multiverse and is based on the Spiderverse film so it's Peter B. which I LOVE (spideybpool FUCKS). the series spun out of the authors' other series and it is, in fact, a pain to read the main entries in the series without reading the other serieses which means that I did spend two weeks doing little to nothing except reading deniigiq's work, but a. it was worth b. this one can be read as a standalone! wade jumps in front of a bullet for peter b and he angsts about it I love it

finally ahem speaking of Peter B, did you know I've been writing spideypool fic since 2015 and I wrote one specifically for spiderverse? I'm a mess (but I'm the mess that you wanted) is really a mix of spiderverse and comic canon like, five years into the future, and deals mostly with like, depression and suicidal ideation on Peter's behalf, but hey there's also a plot AND a happy polyam ending which, what else could you want really

A little rant about leaks because I'm lowkey dreading them. And I'd appreciate it if you'd read it (and if not... 👁👁).

I find the jjk fandom's (though it's true for others too) reliance on leaks very off-putting. I know people want to look forward to something in the middle of the week and talk about it, but this just feels disrespectful, while also being at the cost of other people getting to enjoy it as they want to whether you care about getting spoiled or not.

So many people just don't tag leaks and spoilers properly (forget places where tagging doesn't even make a difference). Seeing things trending with the context of previous chapters explains everything. Not to mention people mis-tagging spoilers and leaks interchangeably (you can remove leak tags after the chapter is officially published but not spoiler tags!!) And no, you're not subtle with your 'out of context spoilers' to someone who has all previous context.

But what boggles my mind is why would you want someone to shout the punchline of a joke in your face before any of the setup has been done. You'll have a bunch of deepfried 2 pixel screenshot of screenshot quality manga panels of crucial moments with none of the build up and pacing. Paired with the most lacklustre explainations of what's happening (the phrasing of which can be biased to the leaker's opinions). Translating isn't easy. To convey what exactly something means from one language to another in an effective and in the intended way isn't easy (shoutout to fan translators tho y'all are amazing thank you for your time and effort)

And whether you care about the story or not, heck even if you think the mangaka themself doesn't care about it, it is just so disrespectful to the content that you're consuming. Making comics and manga isn't easy (churning them weakly is insane imo esp when a lot of mangaka aren't even full time artists) so why wouldn't you allow yourself to consume their story the way they've themself laid it out. Where one panel comes after the other. Where one expression has context in the next page. Where a dialogue has weight only when placed with another dialogue. Give the creator(s) this little grace too, because whether you like a story or not, there is still a huge amount of effort and skill, by multiple people, going into it.

And I personally love interacting with the fandoms I'm in, literally sometimes the only source of joy I have (yes ik leave me alone) is interacting with other fans and having my mind blown over their art and writing and theories. And I'd rather not be spoiled unless I'm myself seeking them out or just reading the actual chapter. So this involves me either spoiling it for myself before someone else does it, or spoiler dodging for 5 OUT OF 7 DAYS A WEEK EVERY WEEK.

I'm not even saying you should only look for official sources or whatever because I know not everyone has access to legal places to read (tho the shounen jump app is there for those interested, but yeah i get it for other publications), but there are better ways to read/hate-readyour fav/least fav manga out there without ruining it for someone else. The wait is juuust a couple of days more. There is absolutely no dearth of fan made content that can't help you last another few days, maybe your new fav fan creator is right around a little wait (ahem check my bs out if you'd like ahem ahem).

I just want to be able to interact with the fandom for more than just 2 days a week, and I don't like my accounts dying because i dissapear 5 days either, and is that a such a bad thing? I come online to have fun, not run an obstacle race y'know?

📇 Amai's Writing Goal

I don't need to write a lot, but I do want to write every day. Even just one sentence! I wanna keep up my momentum!

I'm estimating the end of my story to be at around 300-350k words and I think I'm at around ~270k words? I literally don't know, everything is in different places... 😅So anyway, I just want to ensure I'm always making progress.

Plus, I tend to write more when I'm writing more! So I think this will be healthy for me, as long as I pace myself!

🛁 Amai's Self-Care Goal

I need start (again) setting Quarterly Goals and I need to start journaling every day again. I don't have to write a ton, I have to write 5 bullet points:

What's up with my at-work job?

What's up with my social life?

What media am I consuming lately?

What's up with my personal projects?

What's going on in my personal/internal world?

My sense of time has been absolutely shot since the start of the Pandemic and graduating college hasn't helped. See, what ends up happening is I get to the end of any chunk of time -- a week, a month, a season -- and I PANIC that I haven't accomplished anything.

But having a literal checklist of Quarterly Goals helps proves otherwise -- I can cross off a bunch of stuff, add new things that I accomplished not-on-the-list, and I can tell my anxiety to shut up. (And yes, I don't measure my self-worth by my productivity but I AM aware that my time is limited on this earth and I want to make sure I'm doing the things that are important to me during it!)

And journalling every day is another good way to ensure my sense of time stays in-tact! And having an in-tact sense of time ensures I talk to my friends enough and give myself enough free time and etc. etc.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 22,961

3. What fandoms do you write for? I actually just write for JSHK, and currently writing some as of the moment! I attempted to write for Omori, but I couldn't continue because I forgot the prompt for the WIP I was about to make and for the life of me, I still can't up to this day.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

An Unlikely Alliance = 226 kudos

5. Do you respond to comments? Yes! It's always a joy to read them and I try to respond as soon as I get over myself lol. Sometimes a comment makes me so happy I have to compose myself sksks.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

whoever made your smile must've made it to get in my way! Angst is my cup of tea, but if you ask me this actually isn't angsty enough. It's more or less bittersweet. I wrote this around the time of the Severance arc and I remember getting a barrage of messages from my best friend because they wanted to fight me with how angsty I made the fic. I should write more :3

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Hmm, probably An Unlikely Alliance. This was the first fic I wrote, and it's pretty lighthearted compared to turn off the music (and listen to the quiet whisper) which has a happy ending too, but it's more subtle...if that makes sense?

8. Do you get hate on fics? Nope. And I sure hope that doesn't happen.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Nope...I wish I could lol. But I get so overtaken by embarrassment I die before even typing. Kudos to the writers who can write smut though. Ily all. I wanna try it tho, but I think I'll start with implying these scenes happened in my fic lol.

10. Do you write crossovers? Nope...though drawing crossovers seem like something I'll do.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Nope, and I hope this doesn't happen too.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Hananene! Listen I've never been so consumed by a ship like Hananene. I was just going to read the manga for funsies and I ended up spending the WHOLE day catching up to it and that was THREE years ago. I was in a chokehold. Still am lol

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? So there's these WIPs I wanna finish (tucks hair behind my ear):

Twoshot Childhood best friends/College AU Hananene - I think the problem with this WIP is I keep forgetting it exists sjkfhksj I just found it yesterday lol.

16. What are your writing strengths? Hmm...I guess if there is one, emotions of the characters and the overall setting. I find it really satisfying if I'm able to tie in a character's emotions and make the setting a supporting detail to said emotion. And like, double meaning descriptions...if that makes sense? Idk what you call em sfjhg

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I struggle with the flow and brevity a lot. I take a lot of time with WIPS because I keep trying to see if the flow goes smoothly or wonky, then I have to keep tweaking till it sounds alright in my head. As for brevity, sometimes I drown in descriptions that the fic drags on and is too long. This is where being detail-oriented becomes a con T_T

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Uhh...probably not. English is actually my second language, but I suck at writing in my native language simply because it's kind of a "heavy" language, if you get me. And I haven't mastered other languages enough to write fics with it

19. First fandom you wrote for? JSHK! I'm usually a lurker lol. This is the first time I actively participated in a fandom.

I 100% agree with your tags about what could have made EE look a little better. I really didn't mind RR as much as EE probably because it at least retained the Blazblue aesthetic and style. RR felt like a weird knockoff Blazblue game, BBDW was an actual Blazblue VN dressed up as a gatcha game (my possibly unpopular opinion is that if BBTAG can be considered a legitimate part of the series so can BBDW), EE doesn't even feel like a knockoff it just feels like Blazblue characters in a completely unrelated game. And from what has been revealed about EE's story this may literally be the case as in that is the whole plot. That I feel is what specifically gives off the "parading around the corpse of the Blazblue franchise" feel to me.

A quick salt warning; I aim to fall somewhere in the range of neutrality on this blog, particularly when dealing with Entropy Effect. I want people to be able to enjoy the game fairly and to feel safe sharing that excitement here! I'm willing to try to meet the game on fair, even ground. That said, when it comes down to my own biased feelings, I would've married BBDW if I could've, and I already have some pretty strongly negative feelings about the studio behind Entropy Effect. So I have a bad taste in my mouth about this upcoming game. I don't plan on being particularly harsh in this post, but I will be sharing my uncensored opinions here. No disrespect meant.

Now. Carl. Oh my god, Carl. I'm dying, Carl.

I played Revolution Reburning while waiting for BBDW to launch, trying to scratch the "upcoming game hype" itch, and the gameplay was super fun! But damn did it leave me with a serious hatred for the game itself and the studio behind it. The game has a story mode that is poorly translated, horribly bastardized/watered down, and just... just really bad. I'd respect it as a fan game, but the fact that it's a legitimate thing just pushes my buttons too damn much. Call it a pet peeve.

Again, the game is fun! It's cool! I really enjoyed playing it! There is not an ounce of doubt in my mind that Entropy Effect will be fun as hell, because this studio knows how to make a fun game.

But I really, really wish they weren't involved in BlazBlue. As I mentioned elsewhere, a lot of my rage comes from this sense that what I personally love about the BlazBlue series [the story, the setting, the world Mori has crafted since his youth] has been placed in a zero-sum game against another totally enjoyable aspect of the series [gameplay, and if I'm feeling bitter, the whims of ArcSys's marketing team.] It's not like these two facets actually need to be opposed to one another. Hell, they should be flourishing in tandem. But after everything that happened with BBDW and Mori leaving the studio, I can't let go of the idea that projects that focus more on gameplay and consumer appeal [such as EE] are being pursued "instead of" or "at the cost of" the parts of the series I love the most. So. I get salty. I do, genuinely, hope that time proves me wrong on this.

You, Carl, mentioned EE's story. Like you said, everything we've seen of it so far suggests this isn't even a real "spinoff" title for BlazBlue, in the sense that spinoffs like RR and CrossTag told their stories using the same building blocks as BlazBlue's setting. I personally don't interpret them as existing within the same canon, but they're undoubtedly using the same material.

Entropy Effect's story and setting seem to be entirely original. They look interesting, but I'm stuck with this feeling of "why the hell did they make this a BlazBlue title, and not just an original one?" Maybe when the game releases it will surprise me and I'll understand, but at the moment, with my current levels of saltiness, it feels like a heartless cash grab.

We know there's some level of turbulence behind the scenes at ArcSys around the BlazBlue IP, since BBDW's failure and Mori's suspicious departure. We also know that in the current media landscape, a lot of executive heads are rampantly refusing original projects and insisting on pumping out installments of franchises that already have a name and a following. I don't have any information on whether or not ArcSys is struggling with this, but it's been a growing problem in the gaming industry for years now.

The worst case of this in my memory is the Dead Rising franchise, another one of my all-time favorite games. Differing visions for the franchise and an unwillingness to support new properties let to an absolute mess on the development side of things, and ultimately the death of the series.

With that experience in my memory, I'm worried about the future of BlazBlue. I wonder if it was always the plan to make Entropy Effect a BlazBlue title, or if it was originally pitched as its own IP, but rejected unless it could be tied in to an established franchise.

this is quite a long post so please bear with mee . . . also this may be a bit all over the place because i just do whatever T^T my first tip is to just keep practicing ! try to challenge yourself with stuff you want to improve on. i struggle the most with drawing hands, hence why in all the recent art i've posted all the poses have hands in them :') you'd find yourself discouraged sometimes, when you try to venture out of your usual drawing practice, because (1) it's difficult, and (2) it feels time-consuming – but never ever let that knock you off of the progress/goal you're working towards on ! you'll thank yourself in the future when you can finally draw anything you want with minimal struggles.

second tip is to use references ! it's ok to use references to practice how to draw a full body (and to familiarize yourself with how to proportion like how long should the arms be? how long should the neck be? did i place the legs correctly? is this perspective right?) i've recently been taking my own reference pictures (for my traditional art which i haven't really posted...) since sometimes there aren't many reference pictures on the internet that encapsulates what i want ! it's actually quite fun to do, and can be another way to challenge yourself to draw difficult perspectives/angles. in terms of fanart, i base off of the picture that i want to draw ! like in my recent HAN drawing, that was actually based off of his recent picture from bubble !

i've also recently been trying "blocking" which is where i do a rough "paint" or coloring of a piece, kind of like mapping out how i want it to look like, then later on refining the details ! (u can do this as well if you want another challenge for urself!)

third tip is to watch drawing tutorials/draw with me's on youtube ! that's what i did growing up ! they inspired me a lot, and eventually led me to finding my own art style ^^

fourth tip in growing your community or finding people who love your art? welp i truly don't feel like i'm there yet ! but if you want to find people who have the same interest as you using hashtags can do a lot ! like for me, i'm trying to find people who are also fans of stray kids, hence the tags relating to the drawing (of any member) i made !

just always keep the tags accurate ! add a tag that describes your art, is it digital? is it traditional? did you use color pencils? did you use paint? adding the tag "artists on tumblr" helps you find your fellow artists as well <3 you can also create your own art tag to help people browse through your art easily !

LASTLY, PLEASE HAVE FUN ! i find it's best to truly be interested in what you want to draw. it shouldn't feel like a chore, it should make you happy !! :)) i hope this long post helps, and i wish you the best on your art journey !!

fanfic writer challenge!

@mostlymaudlin invented this challenge and was kind enough to tag me. it took my brain a few days to wake up enough to respond, but here i am.

ok - i'll do baz too, so we can compare.

first thing from me is i'm going to cheat, because i can't cover baz in 3 quotes. both he and simon change so much between carry on and WS/AWTWB that although they have a trajectory from one state to the other, and though i love people backreading AWTWB into CO!Baz.... i write them super different.

CO!Baz

1. And I'm hopelessly in love with him.

this comes at the end of a massive monologue - and then leads into another massive monologue. all about how baz is SAD but his love for simon is BEAUTIFUL and all consuming. it's so dramatic that he literally puts it on its own line, and then cuts to a new chapter. but it's also... resigned. nothing to do about it, just pine.

these are the chapters that i tend to listen to most often, as it's a long run of baz stuff, but i also do think it's pretty typical. (and i love him)

2. The World of Mages never had taxes before. Taxes were for Normals. We had Standards instead.

i thought about removing this a few times, it seems harsh - i only get three choices. but going to keep it in. baz has internalised a lot of shit, he uses learned hatred of others to protect himself against simon amongst other things. speaking of self-protection ...

3. 'You slept in my arms,' he says. / 'Fitfully.'

baz has got what he wants, but he's not able to believe it's happening so backslides immediately. it's a funny line, too - like he knows the audience will laugh with him, even if he doesn't mean simon to laugh. it's also (obliquely) the last thing i would say about CO-era!baz, which is that when faced with an opportunity to kiss simon awake or tell him he's interested in him..... he chooses not to do that. baz doesn't act, things happen to him - except on his crazed quest about his mother.

WS/AWTWB!Baz

1. i'll have the cheesecake factory scene, too - it does what rory says, and also tells us what (i believe) simon loves about him.

my favourite line is:

"I would never want to date you," he earnestly replies. "But it's not because you're mule-headed. That's practically my type."

ha ha. but also - it's true! and it's very kind of him to try.

2. 'I love you," I say. (And I know that's not a thing. I know it doesn't matter.)

so brave to come at all and track simon down! so brave to say it! it feels so unexpected to me and changes a lot of my baz characterisation from here on. now, i'm like: woah, baz can be the proactive character.

3. n.b. i spent a while thinking about what this would be. there are things that i think should be baz characterisation that i don't use enough (the playfighting at the ren faire; the fact he considers his culpability after america), and there's like.... the formal politeness. i've got kindness from WS, so we don't need the bit where he takes daphne home.

i think i'm going to go with ...

Is he scared? Embarrassed? Overwhelmed? Did he even want that to happen? He's never been with a guy, maybe he didn't like it. Maybe it wasn't what he was expecting. It's messier than being with a girl. (Isn't it?) (I don't know anything about being with girls.) (I don't know anything about being with guys.) (I know a lot about furtively bashing one out while my roommate is off fighting magickal crime, then hoping he doesn't wonder why I'm taking a shower in the middle of the afternoon.)

this is just a really fun passage in lots of ways. it has lots of short clauses, repetition, baz correcting himself. being funny, but it also has two new things. the first is that baz is like 'oh no, simon will have a freak out' and doesn't NOTICE that he himself is having a freak out, right now, a terrible spiral ... massive deflection onto simon. and using humour to deflect from own feelings too! (a personal favourite).

and the other is that.... before AWTWB, i enjoyed the shared headcanon that baz had researched himself into being a gay sex savant. what we find out from this paragraph is that he has literally not researched it at ALL, the same as he hasn't researched vampirism AT ALL. he's useless.... in this one very specific way, because he does know loads of other things. but there are things that he's afraid to look at too closely and it's this stupid fucking blind spot - and apparently sex is one of them. simon has to take the lead from now on, RIP to all future sexgod!baz fics. sexgod!simon only from now on.

vash/meryl (trigun): i watched this for the first time this year (@bbunbbi's excitement about it got me!), both the 98 anime and stampede! going in knowing a friend really likes two characters together is always influential, but there's something really special about these two - vash with his outward personality and inward baggage? meryl who thinks he's one thing and learns he's another and stays with him through thick and thin? good stuff!

kogami/akane (psycho pass): it's been EONS since i last watched this but i've been reminiscing with friends recently! iirc i watched the first two seasons of the anime and the first movie, and the highlight for me was always these two...akane the bright-eyed new inspector, kogami who used to be in her position but is now basically like, a dog on her leash? the way he's like, steady, willing, and calm to be just that? the way akane grows through real experience and is a bit hardened, but still stays herself...they go through a lot side-by-side and i think about them fondly!!

frederick/robin (fire emblem: awakening): lol okay piggy-backing on cotton's answer but!! i could name HEAPS of fire emblem ships i love, but these two have really been on my mind lately! frederick the wary will always have my heart lol but the way, re: robin, he goes from distrust to falling in love...but robin is actually (unknowingly) exactly what he was afraid of at the start?? there's romance there's humour there's tragedy....read cotton's work lol and you'll know what i'm talkin about!!!

First ever ship: hmmm i'm not sure if i remember! oh gosh actually i do recall liking amu/ikuto from shugo chara, which was the first anime i really like, properly watched all the way through when i was younger lol!! anne of green gables is something i grew up with too and anne and gilbert have always been the peak of romance for me!

Character Interview

Thanks @sio-writes for the tag! I'll ping @authoralexharvey @author-a-holmes and @friendlyneighborhood-writer for it!

For this interview, we'll go with Rain, the titular sorceress from The Sorceress and the Incubus. She's almost certainly had to do these for the mage reports at some point, so she's an old hand.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Unfortunately not. My parents are very fond of nature and decided to theme all of us children around weather. My sister is Sunshower - we call her Sunny - and my brother is Storm.

2. When was the last time you cried?

I cry pretty frequently, actually, at least if you're including any sort of tearing up. I think the last time was a few days ago, when I got really frustrated with a complicated piece of filigree work that I couldn't get right.

3. Do you have any kids?

Not yet! I think Saker would like having them, and it's not outside the realm of possibility for us. No idea what that would look like, yet, and if we do it I'd like to live somewhere more populated than Barixeor Spire, but given the length of our future, I think it'll happen eventually.

I think that's a yes from Saker on kids. He'll be a good dad, and I'll do my best to keep up.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

Hah! Yes, more than I should.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Given how much summoning I do, I have a tendency to note things that would set people apart as unique - things like asymmetries, how they hold themselves, attitudes, or the pattern of their soul-ley. On a casual inspection, I think probably eyes? I like to look into people's faces.

6. Eye color?

I was born with green eyes, but they're gray now. Not blue-gray or green-gray or anything like that; colorless gray. It took a while to get used to, and it's "off" enough from natural eye colors that people tend to notice them.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

I very much enjoy comedic plays, and not so much the tragedies. I can relate a bit too much to doomed heroes, and they usually leave me unsettled.

8. Any special talents?

Not that familiar with my work, huh? I'm the best dowser in the world; some would say freakishly so. Given that I only recently realized most mages can't see soul-ley without preparation, that's probably true.

My natural talents are with summoning spells.

9. Where were you born?

I was born in my parents' farmhouse in the Barrens. Not uncommon for farming folk, of course; the local midwife delivered me and both my siblings in the the same bed my ma was born in. The Barrens are good farmland, in case you're unfamiliar - it's magically barren, not physically.

10. What’re your hobbies?

I like tracking down artifacts and legendary creatures, places, and objects. It's relaxing for me, though rather time-consuming.

11. Have any pets?

Does Saker count?

12. What sports do you play/have played?

Eh, not really something I've ever been into. As a child I played hoop-games with the other local farm kids, and we'd play some keep-away games on skates when the ponds froze over, but ever since I manifested as a mage I've been a lot more focused on magecraft.

Ah, I suppose that's true. Saker and I do spar nowadays, though that's more for the fun of it than any real competition. I've always danced, too - but, again, that's for pleasure, not sport.

13. How tall are you?

I'm around five foot ten inches.

14. Favorite subject in school?

History, definitely. I'm especially fascinated with the First Age, though of course most of what we know from the time is legends. Maybe one day I'll manage to get one of the stars to tell me a few stories, though the only one I know of who was actually present in the Material Plane at the time was Tarandrus, and it doesn't remember.

15. Dream job?

Does inscrutable sage count? Not that I'm very inscrutable, but I think it would be hilarious to be some sort of wandering mage handing out ancient artifacts to worthy farmboys. Dropping Blackwings in Sersha's lap was honestly the highlight of my year.

First song/artist you remember liking: We were a pretty strict household in terms of music, so probably some kind of religious hymn of I'm being entirely honest. I was permitted whatever played on the Christian radio station. I think the first CD I ever got was Hilary Duff from a cousin!

Middle school anthem: Still not allowed much variety in music...but I had my very first crush on someone who's nickname was "Bumblebee" so when I found Bambi's - Bumblebee, I thought it was a sign.

Road Trip Must Have: Dragonstea din Tai. No explanation needed. If you can't handle me at my numa numa then you don't deserve me anywhere else on my music taste. I will be generous in case I'm traveling with a metalhead and put on the Feuerschanz version. I found them on TikTok recently and they are delightful.

Guilty Pleasure Artist: I second the opinion about nothing being "cringe", but there are a few considered so just because of the fan base around it being weird teenagers. Who cares. Teen years are for being really weird and finding out who you are so you can refine that weirdness blob into a fun personality. I got really into Vocaloid and honestly? A lot of it still hits. And (about to show my entire ass here) Homestuck music. (Gold Pilot 👍) If you know, you know and I don't have to explain myself. We have An Understanding. The Undertale OST by Toby Fox as well by extension. (Bless everyone who got us Muffet and Spider Dance.)

A song that makes you cry: Respite on the Spitalfields has hit different since the Ritual back in September. It came on shuffle as I left: We're leaving the city/So this is farewell/ as I merged on the interstate and the tears would not stop coming as I careened down the highway, screaming myself hoarse. How I didn't get into an accident, I will NEVER know.

A song to yell to: Amon Amarth has slowly crept their way into my playlist and I'm very fond of screaming to any of their songs in my car before I put on my "Respectable and Closed Off Worksona"... I really like Heidrun and Shield Wall! So I was really happy to see those pop up in my shuffle game!

Current favorite music video: I'm still obsessed with the animation for Autoheart's Hellbent. My gender crisis has been over for a while but that's what the beginning of it looked like back in high school.

Oh boy ~ well bearing in mind that I'm in a shared space and likely could have someone rolling their eyes at me for any of the stories I got, maybe I'll have you DM me and I'll share those there lol.  But basic gist: I've had enough experiences where I feel very secure in my belief of an afterlife.

taurus ⇢ what's your favorite food?

I don't know if I have a fave food per se, for multiple health reasons, but I can say I tend to lean towards bread and pasta options that are fairly plain when I do order things (I don't tend to be able to taste multiple ingredients in a dish - mostly in relation to chronic sinuses, so no sense in spending money on complex dishes when some noodles and cheese will do the trick lol).  I do joke that since I'm not too much into sugary stuff this body of mine is a pasta and bread body, not a sugar one lol.

scorpio ⇢ do you feel comfortable talking about taboo things?

I think it depends on what, and for what purpose?  Like I have worked in human services and done mediation work and am very open to discussions of trauma and the healing journey.  I've heard some heavy things, I've lived through heavy things, that society would consider "taboo" to discuss - only we can decide the boundaries around discussions of these things (like trauma is valid, *and* you cannot use it as a weapon to lash out at others), and depending on how detailed someone wants to get I might need to schedule that sort of heavy subject matter, but I'm definitly open to being a sounding board as someone is processing feelings and gently encouraging resources they might like to look into, or even virtually sitting in the discomfort with them for a moment because trauma likes to declare "you are alone in this" and I think in a moment where I'm able to say "I'm listening with an open mind, and open heart" that that can help combat that narrative.

Of course I'm only speaking for myself, and in general we should always do check ins first - even among friends - before we start, and even during the conversation, so if someone needs a break they can tap out and tap back in when ready. And also everyone has their own emotional boundaries and no one should feel forced to be more vulnerable with someone, or be held responsible for someone else's journey - or be guilted to holding space for someone. Just yeah, check in with someone first ;)

Since I'm in fandom for the fun, light stuff, I do have a fairly firm self policy on the kind of content I want to invest energy consuming - this is partially because I do a *lot* of emotional and mental labor with both my own healing, but also because I'm an advocate among my family's health issues (including my own), a legal co-guardian of an adult family member, special needs children, and volunteer where mediation and inter personal dynamics are fairly at the core of it - but anyway, it's a big reason why I don't engage with certain tags in fandom because the work it would require to consume would tap me out. And like I said, I'm here for some art therapy for processing and healing sure, but in general I use fandom as play therapy to lighten things up with the rl things I got going on.

However all that being said, I'm very open to someone sharing a hard time they're going through, because I know my boundaries and capacity for holding space for someone - and if I need a break, I'll gently point that out *and* plan for a time to come back to it.  If it becomes a subject matter that I'm unable to hold, or validate (like someone with toxic behavior who is trying to harass etc), then I'll place a boundary around that as well.  But all in all, I've heard plenty, been through plenty, and am good one on one talking about heavy things, especially under the context of processing to heal and growing on our journeys.

2H ⇢ do you have any object that you like a little too much? what is it and why?

I'm fairly decent about not placing too much importannce on materialistic items (probably because I grew up poor lol), however one object I've been wearing for years is my St. Dominic medal - I received it when I made my temporary promises as a Lay Dominican, and use it as my scapular essentially.  About a year later a local priest gave me a Miraculous Medal, that had been blessed by the Holy Father, so they both clang around my neck for some three years now lol.  I'm making my final promises next month, but I'm not sure if I'm adding anything else to the necklace!

this post actually drives me nuts and normally i'd be like whatever everyone on the internet uses hyperbole but op clearly doesn't know much about the genre or archetype and the fact that a bunch of people who also don't know a lot about the genre agree with them is a littleee aggravating likeeeee

while they aren't wrong that plenty of fictional detectives are affiliated with law enforcement most of them are not

arguably the most influential ones aren't affiliated with law enforcement and hate cops, not just sherlock holmes

'all of them should be weirdos about-' they are. they are amateurs who enjoy mystery solving.

it's worth noting -- bc op brings up holmes in the tags of their og post -- that holmes popularizes the fictional detective archetype and that's why many of them are actually not police detectives

let's look at a few of them

philo vance: famously hated by the police, messes with investigations for fun

john dickson carr's gideon fell: another amateur detective, also annoys tf out of the police

edogawa rampo's akechi kogoro: literally a college student with a hobby (sound familiar?) who often runs circles around and deceives the police to get culprits off the hook when he feels like it

soji shimada's kiyoshi mitarai: an astrologer and college professor who gets brought cases by his crime enthusiast boyfriend, hates the police and nearly gets arrested by an officer for being disrespectful

seishi yokomizo's kosuke kindaichi: another amateur sleuth who's often underestimated by police investigators

etc etc etc

like yeah there are many detectives who are even p.i's that are often affiliated with or working with the police (L from death note, shawn spencer, etc) to act like they're typically written or portrayed like a cop character is so...??

when. a very clear, defining facet of the archetype is that they aren't part of the police force. and it's usually because these stories often feature officers as their culprits. like. .

not to mention that many of these characters are also meant to solve their crimes in unconventional ways, apart from the bureaucratic methods of a crime scene investigator - again they are Guys With a Hobby they're Mystery Enthusiasts and i'm sure a lot of authors find more freedom writing a private investigator than a cop because cops are supposed to wrap things up a certain way. they're supposed to be aiming for arrests. sometimes a detective doesn't want to do that. sometimes they want to solve the crime, lie to the police, and get the culprit off the hook bc they know the truth and don't think that the culprit deserves to get jailed and they dgaf if that's "right" or "wrong" in the eyes of the system

like i do think that a lot of more 'mainstream' media like criminal minds or CSI or whatever do portray a very different sort of detective but traditionally your fictional detective is a private investigator and their stories usually mandate that the police are incompetent, corrupt, etc in order to benefit the amateur sleuth who usually has poor rapport with them

it's definitely rarer to find detective media where zero cops are involved, i get it, but i think it's crazy to completely ignore that the entire genre originated from and is built off the backs of guys who cannot mind their own business to save their lives

SUMMARY You've always had the powers you have now, but over time they grew stronger, taking over you. And one night, having lost your parents, you decided to revive them, letting Scarlet Witch take over you to continue with her plan.

If someone had ever told Peter that he would have to fight the woman he loves more than himself, he would have laughed, a lot.

But here he was, totally devastated by the fight he had just had with y/n, no, she wasn't the y/n he loved anymore, she was Scarlet Witch, she was consumed by the powers she had, she was almost unbeatable.

"What? Don't you love me now?" You laughed in a way he had never heard you do. It was evil in shape, heartless. The city was in chaos because of you, along with a lot of people dying to get what you wanted.

"y/n, you're not like this, you must..." you cut him off.

"I'm not y/n anymore, she died." you looked at him with fury in your eyes. "And if you want to stay alive, I recommend that you get out of my way."

"Sorry, but no, and if I have to fight you to stop you I will."

"Fine, if you insist." you answered simply, light began to be produced in your hands and with his sixth sense he was able to predict where you were going to hit him. "Oh come on! It's no fun if you dodge all my punches." you pouted and reached out your hand so you could lift him up too, you pulled him towards you in the air and it was impossible for him to move due to the force field that your telekinesis had.

"y/n you have to stop, this is not you." he mumbled slightly due to the strength you held in his body as he tried to wriggle out of it.

"I'm not going to stop, I just want my parents back, no one better than you should understand that." you looked at him and he could see betrayal, anger and sadness reflected in your eyes. "You should have helped me when I asked you to, when I was reasonable." your jaw tensed as you watched Peter carefully. "Let me do this and I'll stop."

"No." He responded after a few seconds, and for a moment the façade of feigned sadness that you had had disappeared, turning into anger once more.

"Well, you made me." With a movement of your hand you threw him away from there, with another movement you covered his torso with metal sheets so that he could not move.

Thanks to the strength that he also had, he managed to get rid of the metals that covered most of his body.

"Give it up, Peter." You muttered in his mind. Another of your powers is mental manipulation.

"No, I'm not going to let you take her." He responded back by walking out of the building you'd thrown him into to start swinging back to where you'd gone.

"She and I are one, Parker, if you kill me she dies." you laughed maliciously and he stopped hearing your voice in his mind.

He knew that you were going to go to some kind of magical pit that you had found from an ancient legend where previously kings and queens had used it to revive and live much longer.

When he arrived, you were ready to start with that ritual that you were planning to do.

He tried to send one of his cobwebs towards your hands but you could sense it before, undoing them with your powers.

"You are too predictable, Spider-Man." you said the name with contempt.

"You have to stop, you don't know what kind of consequences that can bring." He pointed to the pit with his hand, as he slowly approached you.

When he saw that you didn't move, he took the opportunity to get closer and take you in his arms, but you immediately turned to dust between his fingers.

"Wha-?" And suddenly the whole scene changed, he wasn't wearing his Spider-Man suit and he wasn't in the pit anymore, he thought you had teleported him or something similar but when he turned around and looked at you behind him, but without that scarlet red suit, if not you in your usual way got even more confused.

"Hi sweetheart." You smiled looking at him sweetly, he frowned as he looked at you.

"What are we doing here?" he asked looking around him, both were on your apartment.

"Listen, you have to let her do what she plans to do, you can't stop her." You denied looking at him with anguish.

"We don't know what kind of side effects it can bring, y/n."

"Listen to me, will you, love?" You were getting closer to him little by little. He wasn't entirely confident that it was you, but he still gave you the benefit of the doubt. "No one will be able to stop her, believe me when I tell you." You nodded looking directly into his eyes.

"But..."

"Shh, nobody." you finally denied taking him by the cheeks, he looked at you without understanding anything.

Your biggest mistake was standing in front of a mirror. Because if you had already convinced him, seeing that Scarlet Witch was in the reflection holding him by the cheeks and not you, he finally reacted.

"I'm so sorry." He murmured looking at you, you frowned without understanding what he was saying.

With one of his webs he took a knife. It took all of his willpower to do it but he finally rammed it into your chest, stabbing into you.

"I'm sorry." he repeated like a prayer as the scenery around them fell apart, returning you to the pit.

Seeing that he was still standing, he looked everywhere, trying to find you as Scarlet Witch, but when he looked at the ground and saw your normal form, he felt too strong a pressure on his chest.

"No no no no." He denied several times, taking off his mask and kneeling next to you. "Please no." he sobbed looking at your dead form in his arms.

He really didn't believe what Scarlet had said, if she died you too.

"I'm so sorry."
