The Assassin’s Blade: The Assassin in the Desert by Sarah J. Maas got way gayer than expected. It went from, “And they were roommates.” “Oh my god, they were roommates,” to me thinking the gay wasn’t there anymore. Though, Celaena had said that Ansel was the most beautiful person she’d ever seen. And then, when all hopes of the gay being there were gone, it turned into, “Rule the kingdom with me” dark version. It hurt so much more than I thought it was going to. And Ansel and Celaena’s fight at the end that was so physically intimate but also heart-wrenching had me close to tears (don’t judge, I’m super hormonal). Celaena couldn’t make herself kill Ansel, she gave her twenty minutes to leave and then she’d fire one arrow at her from atop the parapet, aiming to kill. The arrow missed. Celaena had waited twenty-one minutes.

Sam Cortland knew she would not find him. Would not be able to come for him. He knew she did not know what was going on

That she was probably walking around the apartment, pacing, pacing, pacing. Looking at the clock, maybe biting her nails, her lip, playing with her hair. He knew she was worried

He knew she was going to be crying. Going to be sad and depressed and would go into a dark place.

But he also knew she was going to make it. He knew she was going to survive, knew she was going to live. Knew she was going to burn the world.

He thought of all the things they had wanted to do. Wished to see. Desired to escape.

He knew in some ways he failed her.

But he loved her. He would always love her. And he knew she would love someone else too.

And so while they broke his bones, beat him, yelled at him and destroyed him he kept thinking of her. Her smile. Her hair. Her laugh. Her smell. Her eyes. The eyes he could drown in. And when he knew it was coming to an end. When he felt it in his bones, in his soul. He said her name one last time. Celaena.
