Anthony van Dyck Flemish, Antwerp 1599-1641 “Study Head of a Young Woman” ca. 1618-20 Oil on paper, laid down on wood Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Study heads of this type were painted by Van Dyck using live models, whose features were then repeated in finished pictures, usually of religious subjects. Indeed, the present figure served as the prototype for a likeness of the Virgin in a depiction of the Holy Family. The iconography of the melancholy young woman with long hair streaming down her shoulders also suits images of Mary Magdalen; intriguingly, an early biographer tells us that Van Dyck once depicted his sister Susanna in that guise. The Betrayal of Christ, Anthony van Dyck, c. 1618–1620, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Paintings
Kiss of Judas: accompanied by soldiers with torches and lanterns, he kisses Christ. The scene is described in the Bible: Matthew 26:51, Mark 14:47, Luke 22:47, John 18:3-10 (Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave (Malchus) and cut off his right ear." John 18:10) Looser and less formal than the portraits that made him famous, this work was completed shortly before Van Dyck began a six-year stint in Italy. It follows the biblical description of Jesus Christ’s betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, brings a band of soldiers and religious officers with lanterns, torches, and weapons to arrest Jesus, whom Judas identifies with a kiss. Size: 55 7/8 x 44 1/2 in. (141.92 x 113.03 cm) (canvas) 70 x 58 x 5 in. (177.8 x 147.32 x 12.7 cm) (outer frame) Medium: Oil on canvas

ANTHONY VAN DYCK (Antwerp 1599-1641 London) “The Madonna and Child” c. 1630-1632 oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Shrouded in richly draped folds of silk fabric, the Madonna gazing up to the sky, supports the baby Jesus standing on her lap. The child supports himself on his Mother's breast, with a touching, natural gesture, grasping the fabric of her dress with his hand. It is one of van Dyck’s most famous religious compositions. It was created shortly after the painter's return from Italy and is clearly inspired by the paintings of Titian. Van Dyck painted as many as three original versions of the Madonna and Child. SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK Flemish 1599-1641 “Maddalena Cattaneo” 1623 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr In response to dynastic concerns of Genoese patricians, Anthony van Dyck began to portray individual children while in Italy. Painted in 1623, the likeness of Maddalena Cattaneo is among the most endearing of Van Dyck's portraits, in the way it capture the radiant innocence of childhood. As she looks out with wide open eyes and gentle smile, she captivate the viewer with the disarming directness of her expression. (This writeup is taken from the description at museum.)
