hey guys this is kind of weird but i have a question
im majoring in Anthropology (B.A.) and im in my first year but i’m second guessing my major already bc i don’t know what i can do with my degree? if you have a major or even minor in anything anthropology related plz send me an ask or dm with advice lol. ik it’s still far in the future but i’m scared for my future if i can’t get a job in this field?? and also, i chose this major bc it seemed really cool and interesting bc of my history obsession but also just my interest in humanity as a whole but now idk if that was the right choice to do while picking a major
maybe i should’ve followed in my parents footsteps and gone in the medical field

once again my undiagnosed adhd and autism is kicking my butt.
i still can’t figure out what i should major in. and my break from school is unfortunately being cut short because of my parents (i was hoping to have a full gap year but they want me back in school next month 😵‍💫 which is insane because they're not being helpful. and without a diagnosis will anything really change just because i took 3-5 months off?)
i have to go to community college because my gpa absolutely crashed so much that most universities probably wouldn't accept me right now. and my local school has pathways to transfer to a regular 4 year uni with a major in those pathways
anyways i can’t tell if i want to do an anthropology or physics pathway (two completely unrelated topics, i know)
i like them both but i don't know if i like them because of my hyperfixations or because i actually want to do it.. how do i differentiate that?
examples:
i majored in game design for a year. in reality i didn’t actually like 3d design/vfx, it turns out that animated things is a major visual stim for me. (narrative design is still something i enjoy but writing is definitely a hobby over a main career to me. no thoughts on programming: i don't dislike it but i also don't particularly love it. its just something i'm good at, it can be fun at times)
i also majored in astrophysics for a year. i liked it.. but the fact that all i could do was look at data through a computer and not actually research planets physically put me off from it — the idea of having a career where my work doesn’t actually do much in my own lifetime isn't something i enjoy
now do i want to do anthropology because i'd enjoy it or do i just like a slightly below surface level version... would i even enjoy the work environment? Is this a topic that i just like because as an AuDHDer, it's fascinating to learn as much as possible about the human experience
do i want to do physics because it's a hyperfixation or do i genuinely like this long term?
hhhhhhhh y'all i am struggling
could anyone in these two majors or graduates please tell me some pros and cons + the experience of them?

i can't believe i got my degree in anthropology and nobody ever told me about the small ethnic groups of far east Russia/Siberia. I had to learn that shit from Golden Kamuy. i didn't know people even lived out there.

Thinking of sharing here what I study!
Not always, maybe only when I come across something interesting. It could be fun~! There are many quirky and difficult words lol
It might come in handy if I decide to pursue a second major (where most of the classes are in English ew--)

I'm the most excited I've been in years! On the 21st o get to finally start my anthropology degree. I'm starting with English Comp, Interpersonal Communications, Psychology, and Cultural Anthropology.
I just wanna get started already! I can't wait to really actually learn again. It's cool learning things on my own but itll be so nice to have guidance and structure again :)

First week of this semester has started and I am already slightly overwhelmed. But with some planning and diligence it will all workout. It’s always important not to stress too much and to despair but to keep a clear head. You can do it

Hi! So, I saw your post about university and honestly? Incredibly relatable. However, I’m writing because I’m an archaeologist. Different from anthropology, yes, but it overlaps a fair bit.
Anthropology and archaeology both include a large aspect of fieldwork. That’s usually the part that puts people off. I won’t sugarcoat it, fieldwork can be absolute hell. It’s hot, it’s dirty, it’s complicated, and it’s hard. You’re trying to do something very precise in an environment that is almost always working against you. However, it’s also a lot of fun. It is so exciting to pull out a tiny shard of pottery from a trash heap. Is it effectively the same as the 200 other pieces you’ve found? Yes. Is it still AWESOME? Absolutely. It’s also amazing to see your progress day-to-day and there is nothing that bonds a group of people like digging for six hours in 107 F, every day. Depending on your route, your fieldwork may be community based fieldwork—that’s fairly common in anthropology. There are some really amazing community based projects about preservation in Hawaii, for example.
Outside of fieldwork, anthropology and archaeology are extremely heavy on reading, writing, and presenting. In my experience, you start presenting at conferences around 2nd or 3rd year (UK) or 2nd-4th year (US) in your undergraduate. It’s harder to find funding, but certainly not impossible. And honestly, having a strange, hyper fixation can be really good (it can also work against you, but usually it shakes out to be positive). The US is generally more generous with funding than the UK.
As a brief “day in the life”, I am working towards my PhD which is, at its core, based on archaeo-ornithology. I spend a lot of time in labs, I help teach a few courses, and I am planning a final season of excavation next summer.
I took many anthropology courses during my undergrad, and enjoyed all of them. Anthropology is an extremely interdisciplinary field and a brilliant avenue through which to learn a plethora of new skills. I don’t know if any of this was helpful or what you were looking for at all, but I’ll end it here. Best of luck to you with everything! ❤️
Hello!
Actually Archaeology is the main field of Anthropology that I'm interested in, so your response is very much appreciated! I think Anthropology and Archaeology are considered to be separate subjects in the UK instead of a branch of anthro right? I probably should have specified in my original post that I'm interested in either of them.
Thank you for mentioning the fieldwork! Most posts about the subject don't mention it much. Quite honestly, I don't think I could handle that. Which sucks because I did think I'd like the field but it's great that I know beforehand!
Labs sound fun!
Though I'm fine with a subject involving a lot of reading,, essays and writing are the bane of my academic existence. Since that's a major part of the subject I suppose I should probably look elsewhere.
Follow up question: Are there any free papers or sites to learn about Anthro/Archaeo deeper than surface level info for those outside the field?
