Remember when captain marvel stans were lumping people who had valid criticisms like what happened to Monica (the first female captain marvel) and military propaganda about the movie with right wingers losers? And that we were homophobic for being upset that the movie erased Frank ( Monica’s dad who had a huge impact on her and made him the stereotypical black dad who isn’t there) just so they can gay bait Maria and carol? Because I do.

The #GirlBoss movement in the MCU is extremely pseudo-feminist.
I could be totally off-base with this, but has anybody else noticed that here lately the mcu has had a slight pattern of making a few female characters ridiculously overpowered as well as turbo-hyped by the narrative and marketing…
This specifically includes Wanda, Carol Danvers, and Sylvie.
I’m in particular talking about how all 3 of them had far less time for character exploration and strength build-up than the majority of the other more powerful heroes, had fairly bland and uncreative personalities compared to the other more powerful heroes (Wanda was coddled by the narrative and not allowed to have any ownership in her wrongdoings which would’ve made her more complex, Carol was a victim of the “having the same arrogant attitude as the douchebro male characters is all it takes to make a Strong Female Character(TM)” writers’ mentality, and Sylvie with mary sue-ed to hell), and were generally made more about the cool powers and ‘oooh such a badass’ moments and the aesthetic than the actual depth.
My point is… they’re all so shallow and performative. It’s like the (mostly male) writers looked at the female character and scoffed and said “ok there’s no way this lady’s gonna become a fan fave on her own- we have to help her. We have to give her a boost. I have zero faith in women being able to gain popularity by their own merit (because who’d be interested in a woman, ammiright?), so we can’t just give her a compelling backstory and let that be it. We have to make sure she has the most tragic backstory of anyone on screen at any given time, and we have to make sure the audience knows it! We can’t just give her a specific set of powers and depict them in an interesting and unique way. We have to make her stronger than any other character she’s going to share screen time with and we have to have her flaunt her powers every ten minutes to remind the audience how strong she is! We can’t just make her intelligent in her own way and give her witty banter with the male characters. We have to make sure she makes them look like idiots and condescends them as frequently as possible so the audience knows it! We can’t just flesh out her morals and let her get things wrong sometimes. We have to make it so she’s always in the right and the audience should always be on her side! And even when she does something wrong, we have to make sure the audience knows that it wasn’t really her fault and she still has the moral high ground! That’s the only way we’ll ever get people to like her as much as the main male characters!!”
It’s just…. This is just rank with a lack of confidence in women. They approach the idea of having women front and center with equal parts skepticism and greed. They’re so out of touch with what women want in superhero films and just what women want in general. They fall into the trap of thinking feminists want everyone to know that girls are actually superior to guys, when in reality we just want to be treated with the respect and humanity and agency guys have always been treated with.
And by creating these female characters the way they do (making sure they’re not equal but decidedly better than the male ones, making sure they’re nearly infallible strength-wise, making sure they’re never allowed to be held accountable for mistakes) they literally defeat that whole point. They’re being extremely counterproductive to what feminists are actually trying to do, because they aren’t actually interested giving women genuinely good representation- they’re just interested in pandering to Twitter stans and casual female fans who form their opinions based on a first glance and girls who are so starved for rep that they’ll praise movie-makers for serving up rank crumbs.
They give us female representation but not really, just like they give us queer representation but not really, and like they give us poc representation but oftentimes not really…. Because (surprise surprise) the multi-billion dollar corporation does not actually give a shit about minority issues.

Hot take :
Female characters can be abusive and awful people, and making them irredeemable is not misogyny. It's just an acknowledgment that not all people who treat others poorly have a good reason for doing so, and that includes women.
Can it be bad writing? Sure. Is it always, though? Not really. Especially if the toxic female character was always a bitch from the start and it's obvious that the writers have no intention of redeeming her and never intended for her to be sympathetic. (Looking at you, Stella Goetia stans.)
Though it's even worse when the female character in question isn't even acknowledged as a bad person by the narrative, let alone her fans. *cough* Chi-Chi from Dragon Ball *cough* MCU Captain Marvel *cough* Sam Raimi's version of Mary Jane *cough*

lmao so i was just going through my camera roll and clearing some photos out, when i stumbled across this screenshot i took in january of 2020 and…
Tumblr media
i’m in shock. i literally don’t know how i forgot this happened, like i was actually astounded when i found this. NEVER forget when steve rogers’ ending was so horrifically out-of character that SEBASTIAN STAN HIMSELF posted a screenshot to instagram of a tweet dogging on his ending. it’s been years and i still haven’t forgiven marvel. i don’t think i ever will.

incels trolling the marvels and trying to be objective with “the plot is bad”, DUDE, you’re watching marvel movies where captain america tried to choke a robot and iron man tried to fix ai apocalypse with another ai and hulk can only turn green when hes man paining and thor caused war just because his own stupidity and old man hawkeye can’t deal with grief so turn into a killer for hire
BUT YOU ARE TELLING ME WOMEN SAVING THE UNIVERSE IS BAD?????????
your misogyny is fucking showing

tony's been on both sides of the ultra-specific situation of confronting mortality on the ground, towered over by a friend, and wondering if this is it. if that's the last face they'll ever see.
tony and steve.
peter and tony.
but in the face of possible death, tony and peter were nothing alike.
the discomfort of facing a death caused by someone you're supposed to trust versus the comfort of departing in the presence of someone you love.
the shame of allowing someone you admire to witness your weakness versus the regret of showing them your pain.
the last defiant act of accepting your faith, maintaining eye contact, and daring them to do it versus trying to fight your destiny, looking away, and apologising for not being able to stay.
the millisecond of disappointment when you realise you'll survive versus the millisecond of utter misery when you realise you won't.
tony got up both times, and life went on.

Fic writers, if you're worried that the way you're writing your characters is out of character, remember that the MCU did the ultimate OOC move when they had the guy who said this:
Tumblr media
and this:
Tumblr media
leave his BFF — who he'd lost for five years and only just got back, and who was that someone with the most shared life experience — and other friends and found family to go back to the past to live that white picket fence life.

white feminists will jump me for saying this but I’m glad that the marvels is flopping. That’s what they get for ruining Monica’s reputation forever in the public eye and doing her so dirty in the mcu. Justice for Monica!
Also fuck Disney and I hope they continue to have awful box office records for their movies.

they really............named the new captain america movie...........after an antisemitic conspiracy theory............ started by the nazis....... the mcu really does continue to completely disrespect the jewish creators of their source material while also completely undermining their Black characters and characters of colour. what a disgusting mess.

So I made the mistake of stumbling onto the NOT STEVE ROGERS FRIENDLY tag today and..
Tumblr media
You have to be a special type of delusional to be this obsessed with a character you don't like!??
Over 2k fics have the tag and are almost entirely Tony Stark-centered fics. I'm assuming these are the "fans" who totally buy into the MCU canon and don't know any other Captain America lore outside of what Feige and Whedon have done. Or, they're the "fans" who refuse to understand the politics behind Steve's character and how he was inherently undermined throughout the entire ten years of the MCU by the directors and writers for most of the films.
Because the arguments in most of these fics for being "not Steve rogers friendly" are really surface level shit like:
1) "Steve refused to sign the Accords and broke up the Avengers" (he was right & he didn't break them up, an overemotional Tony did when he refused to listen to Bucky's side of the story).
2) Steve fought Tony and almost killed him (yeah, like Tony didn't blast Bucky's arm off and shoot his repulsor rays directly at Steve).
3)Steve is homophobic (y'all are just making up reasons to hate this man atp)
4)Steve is racist (Steve hated racists & you'd know that if you read the comics, or you guys are just that deluded that you're making Steve racist & trying to project it as canon and therefore a "reasonable" explanation as to why you hate him)
5)Blaming Steve for Rhodey's accident (WHICH WAS TEAM TONY'S FAULT!)
6)YALL, THEY MADE STEVE THE BAD GUY IN A BROCK RUMLOW/BUCKY FIC! I stg I cannot make this shit up💀 Steve's bad for wanting Bucky to be Bucky again, but somehow Brock's the good guy for wanting Bucky to be the Soldier...
Steve left Bucky for Peggy (we'll get to this soon)
There's a hundred more irrational reasons for the Steve Rogers hate, but let me get to the WORST part.
THERE ARE BUCKY STANS WHO ARE ANTI-STEVE ROGERS.
And I'm sorry, no. I don't accept that you love Bucky Barnes but hate the one person he loves the most in the world.
They argued in a couple fics that "Bucky also went rogue after Siberia but he didn't want to associate with Steve, Nat & the rest of the team- WHO HELPED RESCUE BUCKY & EVENTUALLY EXONERATE HIM- but rather, he went off on his own & eventually Tony finds him, they hash it out and become friends to lovers."
Helppp???? Wdym Bucky isn't gonna stick with the one man he's been keeping diaries about to try and get back his memories? But he'll go to the one guy that re-traumatized him by blowing out his arm again?
Not only that, but Bucky absolutely hates Steve in some of these fics and the reason will be, "he left Bucky to go back to Peggy." Like, you cannot be a serious fan if you're still going with the Endgame canon. For a majority of us, we recognize Endgame as being nothing but terrible writing and mischaracterizations. Why are yall not analyzing and interpreting media critically? The MCU has never been on Steve's side and have always diminished his character in an attempt to make Tony the ultimate hero of the OG 6. Don't yall know the discourse? It's embarrassing atp.
And this is my stance on the entire thing: there's nothing wrong with writing fics about characters you don't necessarily like or aren't interested in. It's OKAY if you don't like Steve Rogers- but you've gotta be rational about him, instead of hateful. Most, if not all of these "anti-steve" fics are written in bad faith. Bad understanding of the character and pure, shameless mischaracterizations which just makes these types of fics fickle and weak- hilarious to read though cos that Brock one had me deadddd😭💀.

Having been rewatching Avengers lately and I really hate the fact that Steve apologizing to Tony has been so constant that it actually became a pattern. He sends him a letter of apology at the end of Civil War, although he didn't actually do anything wrong, and in the beginning of IW Tony admits to Bruce that he still won't speak to Steve even after all these years. It's infuriating.
"I don't care, he killed my mom" - oh yeah? How many mothers and fathers have you killed? Did you forget that your missiles killed Wanda and Pietro's parents? You think that because you didn't do it in person you are excused? Winter Soldier at least had the courage to face his crimes. He remembered all his victims. You didn't even know yours. You never apologized to Wanda for what you did to her. You are responsible for deaths of both her parents and her brother, and what did you do? You imprisoned her in your home, traumatizing her even further by letting her think she is a monster to be feared. The first thing you did coming back from space in EG was yell at Steve for trying to give hope to his friends so they all won't go insane. You refused to help them in their hour of need. You took the shield from Steve, and he didn't even give you hard time for that. You basically ignored Natasha's sacrifice and death and made everything about you again. You, you, you, it was always about you, and Steve never said a word to you, never called you on your bullshit, although he should have.
You don't deserve Steve Rogers as your friend. You don't deserve Natasha, either. You never did.
