you are NOT special because “you’re not shocked about how john mulaney turned out to be a horrible person” or “i already knew because of [insert prior joke or incident here]” or “he made that clear from [insert certain joke line here (moral backbone of chocolate eclair, etc)]
people, especially trans fans, are genuinely upset because they just had a piece of media/person that they gave them enjoyment and happiness in this reality that is a shithole taken away from them forcefully. not just by any other incident but transphobia.
what do you get out of making yourself look more morally and intellectually superior than people who are upset and angry and in distress and mocking them?

Do you think John Mulaney ran out of jokes and decided to promote a transphobic piece of shit because of his midlife crisis or because he divorced his wife and all his best material was about her ?

John Mulaney's got a new special and I could barely make it through the preview scene. It's got the vibe of someone who's aware he's a horrible person but thinks his self awareness automatically makes him not one

“but we’re not even supposed to know what happened bc it’s his personal life and it’s none of our business!”
yeah it should’ve been none of our business if john mulaney cheated on his wife or not, but regardless, we know now. we know he’s a potential cheater. I’m not going to give him special treatment just bc I found him funny (& as a jewish woman, I find him to be much more antisemitic than I thought, so have fun with that shit). it doesn’t matter if we’re supposed to know. no amount of saying “it’s his personal life” will make anyone magically forget that he’s most likely a cheater. I don’t want to associate with cheaters and antisemites in my personal life, so why the fuck would I spend my time supporting a man who is both just because “that’s his personal life”? he’s now in MY personal life. and I don’t fucking like him. and I don’t fucking have to.

People who dedicate their ENTIRE blogs to defending someone annoy me.
However if you dedicate your entire blog to hating someone? You go girl I admire that dedication and admission to the fact that the person literally doesn’t care about you <3

as…. someone who is a teenager right now and someone struggling with substance abuse, john mulaney’s new special is kind of eye-opening.

I was at this show and honestly nothing feels worse than thinking you're in a safe place and then having everyone immediately surrounding you laugh and clap at a joke at your expense.
If you laugh at someone who's already being discriminated against it is in no way funny. Gallows humor is only funny if the person on the gallows is making the joke. Not when a millionaire comedian takes pit shots at a marginalized group in front of 12,000 people.
I hope no one has to feel as unsafe as I did there.

I'd say the general priorities of "progressive" people on social media every time a big event has happened have shifted from condemning harmful behavior to proving they've always had the Right Opinions about the subject in the first place. it's so blatantly self-congratulatory and frankly insensitive

At this point I am waiting for John Mulaney to rebrand himself as a "canceled" former comedy darling and start talking about "woke culture" on podcasts

I’m real fucking sick of cis people saying “transphobia is bad, but I’m going to continue to support the person who did a transphobia b/c x,y,z”.
I’m sick of it. Don’t talk down to trans people like we’re stupid or reactionary for not wanting to support John Mulaney after the Dave Chapelle bullshit, or not wanting to support Chapelle himself. Don’t come at me talking about “Harry potter was my childhood!” MINE TOO, BRO. I SOMEHOW GOT OVER IT ONCE I REALIZED THE AUTHOR WANTED ME AND PEOPLE LIKE ME DEAD?!?
To be clear- if it comes out John Mulaney had nothing to do with Dave being there, I’m slightly less suspicious- but I’m still backed away fully.
Obviously everyone can make their own decisions around which media they choose to consume. It’s the defense and the wishy washy “well you can’t stop me!” That I’m against. You’re right. I can’t stop you. You are your own person with thoughts and feelings and beliefs same as me.
But don’t fucking cis-splain to me or LGB+ splain (like if ur a member of the LGB+ community and someone was phobic against you OF COURSE YOUD WANT TRANS PEOPLE’S SUPPORT, right?) or whatever else why you’re going to support said person. Whatever. Do it.
Don’t be shocked when trans people no longer find you safe, though.
