I wanna have something clever to say about these pics (mostly the way he's staring in the first one because oh wow,) but that just made me realize this is really genuinely the last moment that he actually has any clarity or agency as a character, allowed to make his own decisions.
After this scene, for the rest of this movie and even D3, he's Never Allowed to Disagree With Mal Ever (but expected to take the blame for her actions, somehow) and like. I just wonder if he knows that's how it's going to turn out. He disagreed with her once, she ran off, and all her friends think he's the bad guy. He's still compassionate and it's framed as a bad thing ("The Isle are my people too" vs. "Ben, Uma captured you".) And he tells Mal, "do what you need to do."
The choice is squarely on her. If she wants to leave, fine. If she wants to stay, fine. She already told him they were done on the Isle of the Lost.
Cotillion comes, and hurray! Mal stayed! But Ben's under a spell and everyone acts like he's to blame, like he betrayed Mal somehow. Carlos even implying he would rather have left Ben for dead on the island.
I just wonder, if maybe Ben took a look at all the circumstances and everything, and Mal's mastery of manipulation, and understood what his future was going to be: Agree With Mal, Always, or he would be hated.
Unless Mal made the choice to leave again, but she doesn't.

The Villain was Mal: The century long Did I mention debate.
To this day Audrey and Ben are being pitted against each other in the Did I mention scene when neither of them were at fault.
Ben was the direct victim, he was unable to control his actions and did something he wouldn't even had done had he not been drugged and NOBODY out of all the people who knew him for years found this out of character or stood up for him. They didn't pull him aside afterwards to ask what the hell he was doing or if he was okay, knowing he was pretty much completely unprotected from magic and the VK girly is walking around with a spell book.
Audrey was the indirect victim, she was publicly humiliated by her boyfriend and watched people she was friends with cheer him on and the girl he's doing this with is the daughter of your family's enemy. You were visibly destressed and the same thing with Ben, nobody cares, nobody asks. So you do the only thing you can do to try and save face and find another date. She's got her heartbroken, she'd probably feel more humiliated even trying to ask Ben about it and it doesn't help all of her friends are cheering them on. She at this point doesn't even know what was really going on.
Ben ends up in this borderline abusive relationship where he's afraid to say no to his girlfriend/fiance and everyone including his parents holds her opinion of more value than his as king. Whenever he's being abused by magic, which happens in all three movies nobody (D1-D2) Sticks up for him they either don't care or blame him for actions he had no control over.
Audrey is shunned from Auardon and is blamed by her family for failing to secure the king as if they didn't have a genuine relationship and she doesn't have feelings. She falls into a depression and has fallen behind in school and questions her self worth because all of the people who were her friends or looked at her in awe were now asking "What is she doing here?" for showing up to a birthday party that in any other circumstances she would've been invited. How was she not supposed to tie her self worth in dating Ben when people started treating her like a waste of space when she wasn't with him?
In conclusion, after years we need to realize that this situation was neither of their faults, they had been used and manipulated in a plan that was barely undone because nothing was every clarified between the two. The ending of their relationship was forced onto them and consequently the destruction of any friendship they could've had. I don't want to be like "blame it all on Mal" but if we're going back and forth between blaming Ben and Audrey, then yes we need to blame Mal. She created the direct situation for it to happen, benefited from it entirely, lied about what actually happened (saying she spelled Ben for love) and she herself never tried to make amends or actually explain the situation. Mal spelled him taking away his right of action and she clearly wasn't sorry about what happened to Audrey because she insults her right after the did I mention scene when at this point she doesn't know anything about her. She further in my opinions shows a lack of actual remorse when she continues to try and spell Ben later on and when she gives up on magic gaslights him into doing what she wants (she doesn't take no for an answer.) (That's a whole different conversation but okay Mal, Audrey is the shallow one and Evie is better even though everybody knew Evie was only interested in Chad because he was a prince.)

I know I might be reaching but why does every complaint I see of Mal have something to do with her race?? Like her race has nothing to do with it sweetie. Mal sucks as a character I agree but I think we all need to collectively agree that we should not just label it all as 'white girl problems'. Like girlies no. That is "Mal problems".

someone can please talk abuot this scene?
Audrey: Hey! You’re Maleficent’s daughter, aren’t you? Yeah, you know what? I totally do not blame you for your mother trying to kill my parents and stuff. Oh, my mom’s Aurora. Sleeping-
translate: Hi, I just wanted you to know, my partner might want to give you a chance, but I don't trust you because you are being raised by the woman who cursed my mom when she was a freaking tiny baby, captured my dad and verbally abused him, and caused a lot of pain to my grandparents and my parents .
Mal: Beauty! Yeah, I’ve heard the name. You know, and I totally do not blame your grandparents for inviting everyone in the whole world but my mother to their stupid christening.
translate: Yes, but she did it because you disrespected her. This is a completely justified reason to curse a baby who is, like, about a month old.

It's not so much a dislike of Uma but a dislike of how two-faced the fandom is. If Mal had done half of what Uma had done in the last two movies, she'd have been ripped to shreds by the fandom.
Because we both know if the positions had been reversed, and it'd been Mal holding the ember hostage and Uma begging for it back, the fandom would have been eviscerating Mal to this day just like they do with the damn cookie that was only done in a last-ditch attempt anyway.
Or if Mal had abandoned her gang on the Isle for an undisclosed period of time, the fandom would be crying about how easily Evie, Jay, and Carlos forgave her yet with Uma, if you point that out, you're treated with 'she was looking for a way to break the barrier'. Really? It really looked like she was looking to break the barrier when she was dancing with the King she spelled (who not even 15 minutes later was agreeing to a list of kids to bring off the Isle even though he'd been love spelled twice in six months).
But no, we have to sit and bite our tongues and watch our favorite character get ripped to shreds if she dares sneezes wrong but a 'fan favorite' can literally hold the item needed to protect Auradon hostage and all the fandom can say is 'go queen'.
I think we might just have to agree to disagree here my friend. I do think Mal is awful while Uma is ok, and you think they are more even.
But saying Uma abandoned her crew on the isle... I mean the whole reason she was going out *is* to set them free? That is literally just what happened? She even uses the ember to ensure Mal will set *every* child free, not just her and her crew.
Her dancing with Ben is kinda a part of being his date to the cotillion? The whole plan comes as a package.
I used to like Mal a lot and had issues with Uma. I found her love spelling of Ben more troubling than Mal's, but the Mal critics weren't wrong when they say that's because Uma's is rightfully presented with the seriousness it should be, while Mal's is portrayed as Ben being drugged being a funny and silly joke. Which also means Audrey's boyfriend cheating on her against his will and her having no idea that he wasn't meaning to do it is presented as hilarious while when Mal was led to think Ben had simply moved on over her is presented as something tragic. If there are double standards, it certainly isn't in Uma's favour.
And Uma gave the ember back to Mal later on. She just didn't trust her that she would do as promised, and I mean... She was right? Mal was planning on locking the isle kids on the isle with their abusive parents for the rest of their lives.

My problem with Mal Bertha from Disney Descendants
Tumblr media
I know that probably nobody is gonna read this but idc.
I think enough time has pass, so it's time to have this conversation. Mal is the worst character from all the franchise (ik this might upset some people since she is the protagonist but she's is a horrible person and that has to be acknowledged)
This is going to be based in the movies, books and the mini series
Also I want to make clear that this is not against Dove Cameron(that's gonna be for another post) . With that being said let's start.
1) She's a bully
This is the most obvious reason and it makes me mad that she got away with it.
During the book and movies she bullied Evie, Carlos, Uma, Mad Maddy and Jane
in the first book she basically ruined Evie's life just because The Evil Queen didn't invite her to Evie's sixth birthday. First made her mother (Maleficent) put under home arrest Evie and her mom for literally 10 years and when the girl finally get the courage to get out of her house thinking that everything is forgotten, Mal tried to killed her multiple times
Mal literally locked Evie in Cruella's closed during Carlos's party knowing that they were traps in there and she could have been extremely injured (that was actually her plan but luckily Carlos saved Evie)
And that's not even the worst, because Mal was also planing on using Evie to get Maleficent's scepter back by letting her grab the scepter and get the same curse that maleficent gave to Aurora (fall sleep for 100 years).
And mentioning Carlos's party I need to add that kinda threatened him to make the party just so she could have her "revenge". It's important also to mention that Carlos didn't wanted to make the party because that would have caused him problems with his mom.
And the worst about this is that they both ending being her friends like nothing happened and being Mal's minions for the rest of their lifes
And some people in the fandom dare to call Evie "a bad friend" In the last to movies just because she stand up to Mal.
Maddy and Uma are kind of the same but in different ways
Because Mal was bestfriends with both but then betrayed them and humiliated then like the Judas she is.
(But Evie is the bad friend?)
With Maddy she literally threw lye on her, completely ruining her hair, forcing her to change her hair from purple to aqua green just because Mal felt like she should be the only purple hair girl on the Isle.
As I said Uma was a similar case because Mal also ruined her hair by throwing a bucket of shrimps on her, leaving the stink on her hair forever and then maked fun of her because of that calling her "shrimpy"
NO WONDER WHY THEY BOTH HATE HER
Jane was an insecure girl with no friends that was constantly bullied for her looks and Mal literally used that in her favor, manipulating her by using every single one of her insecurities against her.
And at the end she just had to say "I'm sorry" and everything was forgotten and she literally received no consequences. (And in some cases like Maddy and Uma' s she didn't even apologize)
And to finish this point I just want to mention that she was abusive to Ben and ALL AURADON KNEW IT, because Audrey in "Audrey's royal return mentions Mal's two attempts at spelling Ben. The first one is understandable to think that she knew that something was wrong with Ben and that she probably drugged him (which she did)
But how did she knew about the second one?
The only answer is that someone must have tell her about that and also that Mal run away to the isle opening the barrier and putting Auradon in danger and also causing Ben's (The king) kidnap
which mean that probably everyone in the kingdom knew about it AND DID NOTHING, not even Ben's parents, like why do you let your son get married with someone who is constantly putting him in danger?
And talking about the wedding and Mal being a bully just imagine the reaction of all of those children when they saw that their bully was gonna be their Queen. Life sucks!
2) she's a liar/ manipulator that victimize herself
If I could describe Mal in one word would be selfish because most of the time she only thinks about herself and what would be the best for her not minding if she affects others in the way.
I already mentioned how she manipulated Jane in the first movie
But now let's talk about the second movie
Basically this whole movie was her playing the victim when everything was technically her fault
Ben calling her out by ILLEGALLY using her magic and then her victimizing herself by playing the Jughead Jones "I don't fit in" card
Her running away indirectly causing Ben's kidnap and Uma's scape
Literally if she had just talk to Ben about how she felt instead of lying and using her magic to make everything easier for her, everything could have been avoided.
The third movie is when Mal selfishness and manipulative behavior is more noticeable
Let's star with Audrey becoming the villian in consequence for Mal giving Ben the love potion causing Ben not only dumping Audrey but also humiliating her in from of the whole school, so I'm sorry but she had every right to be mad at Mal.
Then, her wanting to close the barrier forever leaving all that innocent children to die in hunger and poverty just because she didn't wanna risk her perfect life in Auradon is just pure selfishness. Literally everyone else in the room thought that was a drastic solution.
To make it even worse she just lied to everyone for the rest of the movie.
She lied to Evie saying that was theirs idea and later when she gets caught she just plays the victim once again by saying she didn't have a choice and also confirming her selfishness by saying "I did it for us" NOT THE KINGDOM and even Evie's says that she did it for herself.
And do not forget how she lied to Uma, Harry and Gil by promising them that she was going to take all of the children from the isle to Auradon (even though she knew that that was never gonna happen) only for make them help her to defeat Audrey.
And in my opinion destroying the barrier was she stupidest decision ever made. The villains will try to get revenge.
But this is just my opinion.
Next I will be writing about my problem with the saga in general and I'll try to fix it. Follow me if you want to read it

The difference between krass and mal is krass's white woman tears (she's pink) is an actual character flaw she has to move past from and treated as such by the narrative meanwhile mal gets pity for hers and even rewarded while doesn't truly work on it.

Let's be real if Descendants wasn't a Disney movie and was a t.v show everything would be leading up to Ben going against his dad and them recreating the Gaston vs Beast fight on the roof. The only difference is Ben would actually try saving his father from falling to his death. But his father being an asshole would try to get the final shot. Top that off with the enchantress still being live but actually healing Ben and him showing up during a big ceremony just calling everybody out.
Okay I'll write it

I never noticed before, but Ben looks like he's physically hurting after the stone spell is undone... maybe that's why he seems so physically closed-off and withdrawn for much of the following scene, worrying over Audrey?
And even in the scene with Hades, when he's not forced to be in the middle of it to guide the conversation, when he's allowed to back off, he's got this closed-off posture again:
Tumblr media
Like whether he's actually, physically, hurting or if its just his posture reflecting some emotional turmoil (considering Mal's lie was just revealed, now he knows she's the daughter of Hades, all of that which she was hiding from him) it's just a detail I noticed.
Too bad we never actually get any kind of explanation on how he feels through almost this entire movie.

Realizing I would've liked Mal if they kept her as an evil shitty character and made it known that, that's what she's supposed to be. But instead I was attempted to be gaslit into thinking she had grown as a person and every time she continues to willingly do horrible and fucked up shit, she was either manipulated or made a mistake.
Example:
Mal attempting to commit genocide on the Isle as a gang leader: I would not care, she's a gang leader of course she's going to do fucked up shit, in fact I might have enjoyed seeing her rise with power.
Mal attempting to commit genocide as a non-queen/protector: complete self-serving bullshit that she's trying to mask as doing the right thing for Auradon when pushed for an answer she admits she was trying to protect herself and her friends and the lives that they had. Meaning her being queen and everyone loving her was more important than other kids getting the chance to not live in filth. She further proves that it is self serving because after making the decision to close it permanently she without hesitation opens it, to get the ember without security or anything and shocker Harry and Gil escape. But we're all supposed to agree and understand her decision and even after she takes it make we're supposed to realize she made a mistake.
If anyone is not understanding the genocide comment, Mal who had lived on the Isle her entire life, knew that to in order for the Isle to get the trash food they ate, Auradon had to open the barrier and dump it in there. If she makes the proclamation to close it for good they can't dump food in there, essentially slowly starving everybody on the isle to death.

There is sooo many things wrong with this scene
The crowd is just out there gasping like hOw DaRE yOu bring another girl to a special event when you're already taken?!?! NO ITS NOT LIKE HE DID THE SAME THING TO AUDREY IN THE LAST MOVIE AND ALL OF YOU HYPOCRITIC BITCHES JUST STOOD THERE DANCING
Uma has every right to enjoy Mal's misery because that girl was literally her middle school bully and practically ruined her life. Where are we at? Church? Yall telling me you wouldn't like to see your old bully get a payback?
I was about to say Mal was stupid for thinking Ben would be with someone who tried to harm him to get the wand but then I remembered the first movie...
All of Ben's friends are like "how dare you break Mals heart?" "How dare you hurt Mal??" Seriously, that's what you focus on? Core four I can get BUT Lonnie and Doug have known Ben for years- they know what he's like, especially Lonnie, who was one of the people who saved him from getting killed by the same person he's dancing with. Sounds a little odd to you? No? Why the hell are they worrying about Bal drama instead of pulling Ben up and asking him what the hell he's doing?
This scene irks me so much. People on the screen don't know that, but we do- Ben has every right not to want to be with Mal. He doesn't owe her a single thing and every "selfless act of love" she did through the movies could also be seen as her own benefit- but that's another story entirely.

I'm still not over people still forgiving and making excuses for Mal from the first movie. She had her "friends" (moreso minions, if you've read the books then you know full well how she treats them like shit) at her disposal and was undoubtedly groomed into a perfect manipulator or bully, ranging on what Maleficent used on the Isle besides her reputation and name alone to get people to either avoid or appease her and Mal. Why resort to magic? It's apparent that love magic, when forced on someone else, is known as evil. As seen in the third Cinderella movie, A Twist Of Time, when Lady Tremaine spells Prince Charming into loving Cinderella's step-sister Anastasia, instead of Cinderella herself.
Mal never admitted the real reason why she did it. She still wrecked a relationship and poisoned Ben with a love spell, also publicly humiliating Audrey.
And oh no, her mother's victim isn't happy to meet the daughter of her perpetrator, the one responsible from ripping her baby from her life, having her be raised by fae? How dare they not trust Mal, especially after using MAGIC to gain and garter the trust of the girls? Something even Fairy Godmother doesn't use, nor Jane does, especially being her daughter? This led to Mal wanting to steal the wand again.
Let's not forget her also threatening to spell Audrey because of her rightfully being angry that Mal stole her life and lover from her? And the other girls who felt awful for what happened to Mal?
Mal's "motivation" for being good was being in the best position in Auradon. Stealing someone else's life in a high position of power, guaranteed to marry the king and still bullying people and only furthering her own goals.
Mal never apologized or owned up to what she'd done in the book (the whole reason why Descendants even premiered was because of the books!) or to Ben and Audrey.
Mal didn't earn Ben's heart. She stole it. How do we know he isn't still spelled? He has no agency whatsoever.

Controversial opinion (or just an opinion that’ll make people offended haha):
I don’t like Mal and I don’t ship Bal because Ben can do so much better imo (the simple way of putting it lol).
I do however ship Malvie because they have great chemistry imo and I love wlw ships. Especially best friends falling in love. Though I do think Evie can do better than Mal in terms of gfs haha, this is the only Mal ship I like.
