idk why im in such a bad mood rn but it actually PISSES ME TF OFF how the entire marauders fandom collectively decided to take this bum-ass loser character with one discernable impact on the storyline (regulus. im talking about regulus) and make him a super complex, three-dimensional MAIN character in the era that’s being literally paired with JAMES POTTER(???) when they could’ve taken a character who AREADY has existing complexities and everything they could ever want and develop them. but they won’t because that character is a fucking woman ☠️☠️

Young Snape:

a life of smoke and silvered glass: Slight AU in which Severus apologizes, tries harder, and stays friends with Lily. Severus doesn't become a Death Eater because he believes in it, Jily get married. Sweet, slightly sad ending. (So cute).

Falling Apart: Time travel fic, no pairings, Severus goes back to when James levicorpused him. (I loved this, I loved how Mary was included and Avery had a redemption arc. Severus never calls Lily mudblood.)

in glory and in ruin: Mulciber/Snape but it's not a main part of it. Basically, a Triwizard Tournament in between the school houses, and Severus gets chosen even though he's only 16. The Marauders and Lily aren't really in it, focuses on Snape's Gang, Charity and Aurora. WIP, and I LOVE it!

The Gryffindor Sort: WIP. Long. In which Severus is a Gryffindor, Lupin is hiding something, Potter and Black are the worst, and there's a Wizarding War about to erupt.

The Fields of Summer: Short and sad. His past was bleeding into the present, just as his future was bleeding out of the gaping wound in his neck. And since memories were useless to a dead man, Snape plucked them out of his mind and gave them to The Boy Who Lived. He didn’t realize that in so doing, he’d forget her.

seventeen moons: After the werewolf prank. Severus was bitten and Lily figures it out. I hated Sirius so much and he was barely in it but he wasn't villainised-it's just the consequences of his own actions.. Loved the Snily! Short.

Surprising Lessons: Tensions run high between the students of Hogwarts in the time when Severus Snape, Lily Evans, and the Marauders are teenagers. New spells are invented, insults are traded, new bonds form, and unexpected support blooms. Short and sweet.

Vox Severus: SO cute. When Severus Snape's voice changes in fourth year, everyone notices.

Ambiguous: Order member Lily did not have a baby. Death Eater Severus did not hear a prophecy. Consequently, the Dark Lord did not fall. ...but what happens when a long forgotten prophecy suddenly shakes, and flashes through the colours of the spectrum..?

Switching Wands: Severus and Lily acted as best friends should and talked about the Whomping Willow incident. Lily is less than impressed with Potter’s behaviour from that point onward.

Her Slytherin, His Gryffindor: Lily has had enough of James' bullying ways, so she decides to finally take advantage of her Prefect status. Or, in another universe, Lily helps Severus, and they become even closer.

Sweet Root: Lily decides to get Severus drunk one summer night. Angst thereby incurred happily resolves itself into, uh, happiness.

You Don't Bug Me: “Is there any reason you’re half naked in my room?”

Snape/Sirius:

Two Sides: A time travel fic where Severus and Sirius find themselves back on the evening before they graduated Hogwarts. With no idea how and why that happened, they set out to get back to their respective timelines. After all, Sirius has to save Harry at the Minstry of Magic, and Severus needs to tell Potter about the final Horcrux. Right? Too bad that they find themselves back on that evening over and over again. (Personal thoughts: I loved this one, very in character and I loved how they 'fixed' their regrets of the past).

Broken Me Found Broken You: It’s determined that Severus Snape and Sirius Black are immune to punishment after years of near-fatal pranks, bullying, and homemade curses. The only person who thinks them capable of ending the feud and finishing their education is Professor McGonagall. For the summer of ‘77, she gives them a pair of charmed hand mirrors and an ultimatum: communicate. That’s it, a mere ten minutes every Saturday. Back at Hogwarts, when their animosity proves insurmountable, Sirius and Severus are relegated to a small, Eighth Year dormitory. The tight quarters—wandless—are intended to force them to make a peaceful reconciliation, but peace is impossible with a bloody war ramping up inside and outside the castle.

Sorry: Sirius Black decides to make amends for the horrid way he treated Snape when they were teenages. Snape is less than amenable to the idea. (Written around the time of book three/four). Basically, Sirius apologises a lot. And then some fucking.

The Sin in Your Grin (And the Shape of Your Mouth): The Order needed Sirius, but he doubted they'd mourn him very long when he finally disappeared. The first Wizarding war, Snape and Sirius are fucking. Sirius thinks Remus is the spy, Severus tells him otherwise. Canon-compliant: James and Lily die, Peter is the spy. The last line. Shaking.

Dead Reckoning: Severus Snape delivers a potion to Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, holding a twenty-year-old grudge in his heart. He has yearned for revenge for so long—and he will have it. Along with something else he did not ask for.

Beyond The Veil: In one world, Sirius Black ignored Severus Snape's warning and went to the Department of Mysteries to save his godson's life. He died and went beyond the veil. In another world, Sirius Black stayed back. This made all the difference. An AU where Sirius Black survived and now knew Severus Snape's deepest secret.

Rings And Ringing Bells: A bastardisation of a traditional love story. Two men both broken by the world are at wit’s end trying not to kill each other. There’s Severus, a bitter insult who does not take fools lightly, and Sirius, a drunkard who has a habit of pressing his buttons. It involves a curse which forces them to get married, an immaculate conception, and the blurring of the line between hate and love. They fear that they have no control over their lives and are doomed to make the mistakes their parents had done before them. They’re not good for each other, but the fiasco that is their romance may be enough to teach them how to hate each other and themselves a little less.

Always (Come For Me): Snape might have been lying when he said Sirius Black wasn't punished for the prank he had pulled on him. It all started with Sirius having to live with the Snapes for the remainder of his summer...

First and Last and Always: Severus had his wand. He swallowed hard. His wand. Magic. His only defense, because Black outweighed him by at least three stone. But magic was more than enough. Severus had never needed physical prowess. His magical strength, and the keenness of his mind, gave him the advantage. Except when it didn’t.

Visions of Doom: Severus gets injured in the shrieking shack (his fifth year). While unconscious he witnesses some scenes from his future and realizes becoming a death eater wouldn’t bring him power and glory but pain and servitude. He spends the rest of his schooling trying to shape a different future for himself.

Fuel the Pyre of Your Enemies: A paired class assignment for Astronomy incites a mutually beneficial agreement between Remus Lupin and Severus Snape. An exploration of sexuality and friendships. (One of my favourite Snupin fics, really realistic. Also no evil!peter).

where the wolfsbane blooms: Remus and Severus friendship, and then more. 7000 words-short but sweet. Severus tries to cure the lycanthropy. James is constantly befuddled.

Have Your Cake and Eat It: Remus POV. Long. Incredible. Changed my world view. I cried with Remus at the end. Still kind of happy! Time travel fic. Remus lives. Realistic for the characters and especially for the seventies (although lowkey Remus is too woke for the nineties why does he know the word heteronormative). I loved Sirius in this one. Lying in hospital after the Battle of Hogwarts, Remus Lupin has a lovely lucid dream that he's gone back to his school days at Hogwarts. Only the day passes, then another, and another, and soon he must face the terrifying possibility that it isn't a dream — that he has irreparably altered the events of the past. Cunegonde is SO good!

DELOCAPONUM: 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟏. A new acquaintance to the territory of teaching, an old friend to grief and misfortune, and entirely off on the wrong foot, twenty-one-year-old Professor Severus Snape reverts to an old charm of his — a charm for things that are lost — in attempt to find the one book in which he wrote it. But when the spell starts working against him and mysterious things start happening to his own students, it seems he has no choice but to form an alliance with an old schoolyard enemy in order to find a culprit, a book, and his own identity. And one thing is for certain: the irritating charm of Remus Lupin is nearly impossible to refuse.

Creature Comforts: A classic! Remus and Severus are paired to work together in Care of Magical Creatures in 6th year. Neither one is too happy with the arrangement at first.

That Awful Boy: CLASSIC! Severitus. Petunia lets slip a twenty-year-old secret, and Harry is sent to Spinner's End to study Occlumency early. Severus Snape can see no way in which this could end in catastrophe.

Not Really Here: After the werewolf prank, Severus disappears. He’s still at Hogwarts—at least, he thinks he is—and he’s probably still alive, but no one can see or hear him. Except for Lupin. Remus, meanwhile, is avoiding the other Marauders—as well as everyone else—and Snape becomes the sole exception to his self-appointed isolation. As they work together to look for answers about Severus’ condition, the unlikely pair drift toward friendship. But building a relationship of any kind presents a challenge when neither of them is sure Severus exists at all. I've only read this once but I love it. No Marauders bashing, but no pretending they're saints either. And they have a pretty big part but obvs Snupin is at the forefront.

The Heir to the House of Prince: Harry is the main character and the main ship is Harry and Theo. While Snupin is secondary it's pretty central. Summer of 4th year and Harry's all alone, dealing with his grief and the sudden revelation that James Potter is not his father. Support comes in a strange form. The form of Theo Nott, son of a death Eater. A strange friend who says he'll help him find his true father, whoever this Lord Prince might be. Technically Snily ig? But not really.

Sight Unseen: After losing his sight during the Battle of Hogwarts, Remus struggles to adjust to his new circumstances; when depression threatens to overwhelm him, he receives unexpected assistance from an unknown source.

The Other Side of The Mirror: In sixth year, Remus Lupin nearly killed Severus Snape in wolf form. Miraculously, Severus escaped unharmed. But what if he hadn't?

It was a spur of the moment kind of thing, a moment of weakness and strength that led Severus to put his name in the Goblet of Fire. But he was chosen now, and he had no choice but to play in the game, maybe he will live or die, but either way he wasn't going to become what everyone said he would be.

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown): Long, loved it, well written. James Potter starts his seventh year with a secret. He has amazing friends, Sirius is always right by his side, Lily is finally starting to warm up to him. His life is an endless cycle of partying and drinking. So what if the Wizarding World is on the precipice of war? So what if Severus Snape has disappeared from Hogwarts? That's not James's problem. Life is beautiful, and even if it's all an illusion he wants to hold on to that dream for just a little bit longer.

Colours of Redemption: Severus Snape was meant to die. Instead he was placed into hell. Trapped in timeloops, Severus tries to make sense of the future knowledge he suddenly had. If he made one bad move, everything is reset for him to try again. Being placed into a new house and everyone being nice to him, Severus is doing his best but it is hard. Especially when James Potter is noticing him in a different way.

Goeey Melting Hearts: In their 5th year James, Sirius and Remus over hear a conversation that makes them reconsider their opinions of the ‘future Death Eaters’. Burning Doves: The first Snape/Regulus I ever read. Regulus needs help with potions and Snape tutors him. Not much Marauders, they're just offscreen assholes. Narcissa and Severus friendship which I always enjoy. It's done, but I haven't finished it yet. Whoops.

Severus and Snape: Severus Snape finds Lily dead in Godric's Hollow, her son's screams echoing in his ears, and decides to end his life with hers. Fate has other ideas. Next thing he knows, he's facing an 11-year-old Lily Evans, on their way to their first year at Hogwarts.

Headcanon

As a person who never actually read the books but spend too much time on this fandom, I headcanon that:

The marauders were hypocrites, bc Sirius and Remus were """secretly""" dating, but they still made fun of Severus for being feminine and later on for being bissexual.

Lucius and Narcissa earned the spot as the "prettiest couple" in the yearbook for almost 3 years in a roll, that until James and Lily started dating.

Lucius swears that if they came out as a trouble with Sev they would get that spot back. That always makes Cissa giggle and Sev blush.

By the way, they're a trouple.

More like, Lucius and Narcissa are dating bc their families want them to, but have more of a platonic relationship while Severus and Lucius are secretly dating. Narcissa supports them with all her heart.

They know about The Half-Blood Prince book, as Severus was really putting effort on it and was very proud.

Lucius nicknamed Sev as "my Prince" and sometimes he even makes a small bow, just to make Sev blush.

When Narcissa got pregnant with Draco, they panicked b they didn't know if the kid was Lucius' or Severus'. Luckily, Draco was born with Lucius' white hair. If he has Sev's dark hair, they were going to say that it was bc Narcissa was a Black.

Both Narcissa and Lucius presented Severus as a pureblood from the Prince House to their parents. The lie didn't last long, but it was good while it lasted.

When they found out about Severus' abusive home life, they really decided to spoil him, taking him to expensive restaurants and parties.

Once, they asked Severus what brands were considered luxury in the Muggle world and Severus made them buy Prada cuz the Devil Wears Prada. Lucius and Narcissa never got the joke.

Narcissa brought Lucius and Severus "Prince" to a family dinner (the kids were allowed two companions). Sirius brought James and Petter. That was an awkward dinner, but most of the adults were mad at Sirius for bringing two Gryffindors.

Also, Narcissa hates Sirius, not for being a Gryffindor (that as well), but for being a Marauder and a sadistic bully. She makes his family life as miserable as possible.

Actually, Sirius and Bellatrix were not so different. She was also a sadistic bully, but she aimed muggle borns.

'How has the Marauders fandom hurt you today?'

By turning the Black Sisters into abused, cynical sad girls™ with no agency, a characterisation that is the very opposite of how canon presents them. Even Andromeda is no 'sad girl'. In the only scene we have of her, she is described as haughty. Narcissa is only sad because of Draco being in danger. And Bellatrix... How can anyone read about someone so exuberant and...sensual, who enjoys life to the fullest especially in battle and while she kills and tortures people, and see a sad girl? She is sad in one or two scenes because she is human and things are not going well, but when they are going well, like at the beginning of the Department of Mysteries and in DH when she thinks Harry is dead, she is positively vivacious.

And people who are abused obviously do not have monolithic personalities but abuse leaves signs that I do not see in any of the Black sisters. You can see such signs clearly in someone like Merope, for instance she is defeatist, but nothing like that in the Black sisters. I really hate the obsession this fandom has of giving villains/darker characters tragic backstories and they're not even creative about the tragic backstories. It always has to be child abuse. Sirius going to Azkaban at 21 for a crime he didn't commit after his best friend got betrayed by one of his other friends and died isn't that tragic. He has to be tortured by Walburga to be tragic enough for them.

Dear @fugamalefica, preach. Dialling up child abuse to make the characters "interesting" or "tragic" is a cheap way to characterise. Especially if no thought is given to its lifelong effects. Actual survivors of child abuse will show signs of it well into adulthood or for their entire lives. It's glossed over. Romance "fixes" the abuse. That's not how it works. It is fanfiction. It does not have to be realistic. It does not have to be accurate. It is frustrating when this narrative is pushed on all parts of fandom. When fanon relies on bad narrative, bad characterisation.

The Black sisters in fandom are sad, hysterical, or forgotten. When you want to write them in a different way you get hate.

The irony.

Marauders Era Headcannons (Realistic)

Regulus Black did not interact with the Marauders very often, and though Sirius threw jabs at him on multiple occasions, he never really bullied Regulus nor targeted him, mostly because he felt guilty about targeting his brother. It was easy to target Severus because Sirius had only known that Severus was 'unpleasant' to him and not really much after that, but knowing Regulus his entire life, he would rather not harm his brother even if he resents him. Regulus and Sirius downright avoided each other at all costs but never really had major issues with each other.

James didn't like Lily until his fifth year. Before that, he mainly tried to annoy Lily because she was Severus Snape's best friend and wanted to annoy Severus in the process. He only started to like Lily after she rejected him because he saw that Lily was a person with self-respect who values true friendship and love.

Sirius Black was more emotionally abused by Orion and Walburga than physically abused, same with Regulus. Sure, they might have thrown a stinging hex at them a couple times, but I imagine Walburga as a master emotional manipulator who finds pleasure in pitting her sons against each other, though she obviously favors Regulus more and encourages him to shun Sirius. Even after Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor, Walburga was obsessed with him in a creepy mother way and still tried to sway him towards Pure-Blood ideology, even when he rejected it. She was genuinely sad when Sirius left and didn't want to disown him, she only burnt him off the tapestry out of rage. She loved both of her sons, but in a twisted way. She was a little bit like how Queen Victoria was to her daughters. Obsessed and Controlling but did care about them deep down. Sirius and Regulus's death drove her into insanity and she claimed she hated them, but deep down she was just depressed, sad, angry and bad at parenting.

For the longest time, Sirius and Andromeda weren't close. Andromeda, who was at the very least 5-9 years older than him was definitely in Hogwarts when Sirius was growing up, and was more invested in her studies than her relationship with her cousins, so I imagine Sirius was closer to Bellatrix and Narcissa growing up. Bellatrix being the eldest viewed Sirius like her baby cousin, at least before he went to Hogwarts, and loved him as such, and Narcissa was closest in age to Sirius, so they'd a close bond. Even after Andromeda was disowned, I have a feeling they still weren't super close, and Sirius more or less looked up to her more than anything. Andromeda had a daughter to raise and Sirius had school to go to.

Peter Pettigrew was a Neville Longbottom like character before his betrayal. He was very brave deep down, but often was too scared to reach his potential.

Frank and Alice Longbottom were in Auror Training by the time the Marauders were in Hogwarts, they were respected Aurors according to Dumbledore, which means a lot of years of experience.

Evan Rosier, Barty Crouch and Regulus Black never hung out together. I imagine young Barty Crouch being a try-hard for his neglectful father, and never really had much friends in his early years. He joined a clique of future Death Eaters as he got older once he realized trying to please his father was a Sisyphean task, but even then he was distant from everyone in the group who kinda considered him somewhat of a loser. Evan Rosier is a character I headcanon being in Bellatrix or Andromeda Black's year and therefore had no contact with Regulus or Barty. Regulus Black had a small friend group and looked down on Barty Crouch due to the fact his father leaned light.

Pandora wasn't a Malfoy, Lestrange nor a Rosier, nor did she interact with Regulus, Evan, Barty or the Marauders. In most FanFictions, I make Pandora's name 'Pandora Morgenstern' or 'Pandora Flume' but I feel like she is used to replace the Severus-Lily dynamic with Regulus by making her his best friend. I just think she was a regular Half-Blood witch with a lust to discover new spells.

I'm loving the recent chapters to The Man Who Would Be King! I was wondering with the homophobia in the wizarding world, does anyone has a functioning gaydar?

Like all things depends on the character and their upbringing even within the wizarding world.

You have Lily where homosexuality is a nebulous concept that exists, that gay people are somewhere and certainly in the Muggle world, but she would insist she's never seen it personally in the wizarding world due to lack of overt out people/not really having internalized it in terms of the wizarding world.

You have Alphard where he is the gay people that exists, is highly closeted, but is also a bit of a shut-in and family oriented/doesn't have many friends. He'll side eye other people and go "huh, they're acting very similar to me/have very similar life circumstances, aren't they/don't they?" So, he'll look at people like Rabastan who really really really really really don't want to get married even though his brother's over there in his mid-thirties still without an heir and goes "hm, looks familiar" but he would also shrug and accept he's wrong if someone vehemently went "no way!" to him.

But you bring up interesting examples.

Dumbledore is... Dumbledore. He'll never catch on with Tom in particular, or anyone having anything to do with Tom, because as you note Tom is an evil hellspawn with a dark glamour about him. Everything by its nature with Tom is at once both hyper sexual and also completely asexual because that's just what Tom is to Dumbledore. He's a sexy sexy sexy man who isn't sexy at all because he's evil except he is but in a dark way and completely incapable of love and intimacy and what do you mean the way Dumbledore's been describing him is weird?

So, even in a different world, I don't see Dumbledore being different because he's Dumbledore.

As for the nieces, absolutely no idea, none. Now, they wouldn't go Edward about it because but they would have weird reactions because of just who it is. Bellatrix gets to deal with the fact that her father is banging her god (and is it gay if he's banging your god or is that just something anyone would do if their god asked?), Narcissa would also be more :/ about the fact that the dark lord... is... doing things with her beloved uncle-father, and Andromeda of course would lose her goddamn mind. If it weren't Tom I imagine they'd be a bit more "huh" about it and would probably, eventually, shrug it off as an Uncle Alphard quirk of which he has many, on par with things like "Uncle Alphard really likes books!" But the idea that the Dark Lord is banging their uncle-father?

Merlin forbid, the concept is blasphemous and terrifying. They're not going there.

hi, i read this one-shot similar to Tabula Rasa by senlinyu recently but just can't find it - (1) starts off with H has memory gaps and feels like things are missing from her flat, including an ?armchair, her bed smells like peppermint, and she finds a stained ?blue/?green coffee mug that doesn't belong to her bc she doesn't drink coffee. she asks her friends but they just say it was a "work accident", and she starts carrying the mug around. later it turns out she was secretly living with D(1/2)

and he gave her some old Malfoy heirloom necklace that was cursed, either by Narcissa or she didn't tell him it was still cursed? she's definitely not happy when he told her tho. anyway H went into a coma and D had to be removed from her mind entirely. the flashbacks to their developing relationship are interwoven, and in italics. eventually ginny figures out she was with D and writes it on a parchment scrap that she keeps with her (2/3, sorry i remembered more as i typed it our lol) H breaks into her boss's office to look at her records, finds out it wasn't a "work accident", blackmails her boss not to report the break-in with evidence of an affair boss is having with ?secretary that she found while breaking in LOL. doesn't look at the scrap until she finds D and figures out he's what's missing from her life (he smells like peppermint, he says the armchair was his in the first place, missing books in her bookshelves (which I just remembered) were also his) (3/4 LOL sorry) D tried to pretend he didn't know anything but then finally admitted it, he'd removed almost every trace of himself from her flat after she was obliviated. she looks at the scrap, reads out his name, then goes into a coma again. it ends with her finding the mug again? or drinking coffee from it? like it's implied she had to be obliviated again 😭😭😭 i went through some of my ao3 history but i've been on a binge lately so it's super cluttered, pls help, thank you so much!! (4/4 finally done LOL)
