The thing about Stannis that people often forget that he was only 17 when Robert's Rebellion started. His parents are dead, his older brother who was meant to be in charge and head of the family has practically abandoned him with all the responsibilities of being Lord of Storm's End, being head of the family and raising Renly who was 3 or 4 at this time. He's seventeen and all of a sudden he has to make a choice between what he knows is the "right" thing to do which is staying loyal to the Crown or standing with his brother, who he no doubt loves despite his later declaration in ACOK. He's seventeen and there's an army outside the walls, everybody inside those walls has to rely on him when he knows that they really want Robert, he is in charge when doubtless he wants Robert back. He's the one who is meant to be in charge after all, the one with the experience, he's only 17. He has to watch Renly grow thinner and thinner, likely going without food himself just to give Renly an extra mouthful here and there. He has to see people turn on House Baratheon from inside the castle, probably knowing them all his life. He has to punish them or end up looking weak, he can't afford weakness. Not when there are hundreds depending on him. And Robert. He's depending on him too, afterall. Then comes the news that Rhaegar is dead, King's Landing is Robert's and he's King now. Weeks later, Stannis gets news that the Siege is about to be lifted. Doubtless he looks out over the walls and sees who has come to save him. It's not Robert. It's Ned Stark, who Robert went to war with, who Robert sees as a brother, far more than he's ever treated Stannis. And even then Stark has to run off for another duty, leaving Stannis to deal with Storm's Ends recovery. Then when things are settled, the Baratheons unite. Robert has a task for Stannis rather than a thank you or an apology. Stannis grits his teeth and gets on with it. He fails to capture the last Targaryens. He returns only to hear Robert's grumbles. And when comes time for dealing with succession, Renly- who is only a child - gets Storm's End. Stannis gets Dragonstone, the reminder of his failure not his achievements. It breaks Stannis's trust in Robert. In the following years, Robert becomes more and more of a disappointment. He beds Delena Florent at Stannis's wedding ruining the nuptials which are nothing more to Stannis than a political move no doubt recommended by Jon Arryn. He becomes more lazy, more distant, less and less of somebody to look up. To make matters worse, Renly who Stannis protected, starved for and practically raised, still looks up to Robert, pushing Stannis away. By AGOT, Stannis is isolated by his own House, trapped in a loveless marriage, weighed down by duties he never asked for, responsibilities that he has to shoulder because Robert won't, crushed under the knowledge of the Lannister Twincest and its repercussions and he's just been pushed aside again by Ned Stark, this stranger who Robert idolises so much. Its the last straw so he leaves. Months later, Robert is dead, Renly is at the heart of trouble and the Realm is bleeding again. Stannis declares himself King, not only because Melisandre wraps the shroud of messiah around him or he really feels any sort of higher calling or ambition. He does it because that's what he does, he cleaned up Robert's messes, he steps into Robert's shoes and does his duty. Just has he's been doing since he was just a child.

One thing that I hate that the show runners did was take away Renly's complexities and make him a straight up good guy that just wants what's best for the people. In the books, hes crazy, but it makes sense!! His family left him!!! And now he's like kind of terrible and no one understands why. From the ages of three to five he's starved and watches other people starve too. His parents are killed in front of him as a baby!! I mean, he obviously doesn't remember their deaths, but it's not really a comforting thought none the less. But throughout all this extreme trauma, he has Stannis. He has his big brother who loves him and takes care of him and is like a father to him. They go through all of this together. Even when it seems hopeless, like they're going to have to resort to cannibalism (presumably Renly, being a little kid, doesn't know this) they still have each other. Then, things start to look up when Davos brings them onions or whatever. They're not going to die, their men aren't going to continue dying. Robert wins the throne. But then he decides that Stannis needs to come to King's landing with him. They just. Leave their little brother alone in Storms End with the maesters. After everything he's been through (and they've been through together) he is abandoned. Then he has to watch Robert start a family of his own, listen to all the praise for Joffrey, the Prince, and none for him. What's worse is Shireens birth. Stannis was his main father figure!! And he abandoned him and now has a kid of his own. Then Stannis wonders why Renly hates him and Robert hates Renly for wanting his approval so badly. I wonder why, Robert!!! He does everything for the attention he never got when he was little and always wanted. He can't even properly see the love that Maester Cressen has for him because he's disillusioned. The show just takes all of that away, and it could've been soooo good and so complex, but it just falls flat

The day people stop comparing Aegon/Rhaenys/Visenya to Jon/Arya/Sansa is the day I'll know peace. People hate Daenerys (and house Targaryen by extension) but then always want to steal from her story to uplift their faves. It's past the point of being pathetic 🙄

Not to get feisty but it's kinda funny when members of team Renly (in universe but I guess it applies to fans too) point out that Robert is a Usurper but then instead of realising it's supposed to deconstruct the ridiculous concept of the "rightful heir" Targaryen stans are like "yes exactly, based character pointing out the divine right of kings to burn people alive without trial and you're not allowed to complain about it". Like bro pls this is not a legitimist talking.

Hello!! What are your top 3 favorite and 3 least favorite ASOIAF ships?
I'm a basic person, I love mostly canonical and unproblematic ships.
Love:
Arya x Gendry (obv). I mean come on, If Martin didn't want me to ship them he could have done without writing all the tropes of the romance genre on them. I can't tell you it will end well, but I can tell you it will happen.
Jaime x Brienne. My first asoiaf ship. I think it's very difficult to write this kind of interaction while we can read both characters' thoughts, but it's so well crafted.
Renly x Loras. When the sun has set, no candle can replace it…
The only ships I love, but I'm sure will never happen are Aegon/young Griff x Shireen and Jon x Satin (!).
Hate:
Jon x Sansa. It wouldn't be number one if it wasn't so popular in the fandom. Plenty of characters share themes or parallels, but that doesn't mean they're going to fuck.
Jaqen x Arya. I like most Arya ships, but this one makes me want to puke. It's wrong on so many levels.
Drogo x Dany. I don't think all ships have to be romantic necessarily, but this is… (sorry George) a girl who convinces herself she's in love with her rapist because the reality is too hard to process.

Loras in season 2 & the books fought on the front lines in the battle for Kingslanding & helped liberate it from Stannis’s forces.
But later on D&D suddenly decided gay knights can’t fight as they had him arrested by vicious homophobes without a fight. He was even armed when they arrested him! Like they could’ve at least shown him taking a few of them out before being arrested.

I actually think Margaery and Renly did consummate their marriage, it doesn't make any sense not to. They needed an heir. They probably lied to the Lannisters about consummation to hasten the wedding otherwise they would've had to wait till the pregnancy was over.
I wouldn't be so sure.
It's very possible that Olenna leaned on Renly's obvious reluctance on the subject to give her blessing to wait a little. Margaery was only 15 at the time, which would have been a plausible pretext. That way, Olenna has the marriage in hand but the trump card of it being unconsumated in case this alliance goes south or Renly dies. A virginal Margaery remains a potential royal bride.
At this point the Reach is sitting on a formidable army AND vast food reserves. They're a valuable ally for anyone willing to court them.
As it turns out, that was exactly what happened.
And it is not just the potential pregnancy that would have hindered a royal marriage at a later date if this marriage with Renly had been consumated. I'm pretty sure the king would be expected to marry a maiden and not a widow with prior sexual experience.
I may be wrong, but I don't think there is an example of a king on the iron throne marrying a widow, especially as his first wife.
The queen and mother of the royal heirs has to be "spotless". (Blech.)

The actors who play daemon and rhaenyra have insane chemistry whereas kit and Emilia had negative chemistry (I’m cringing just thinking of it) hence the difference in public reaction I guess
so you’re telling me… a character who is around 15-17 (13 at the start of the show) has more chemistry with her 30 or so year old uncle than jon had with dany… and that’s why people think it’s so beautiful and what romance is meant to look like?
what about alicent and viserys- why is that so disturbing?
honestly, thanks anon but this is not a convincing enough argument for me to understand why people are finding this so iconic and revolutionary.

grab my muse by the throat | accepting ( somehow ?? )
【@west1rosi sent a raven】: 🙌 you know what, from jaime ( lets get the number of people who choke renly to 69 )
Tumblr media
oblivious to the looming threat, on his way back to his chambers renly had found himself TRAPPED between the nearest wall and a feral kingslayer, the latter's strong hands closing around his throat. and he thought he'd once again gotten away with publicly mocking the queen at the feast .. apparently this time there would be some consequences. how thrilling.
Tumblr media
daring to let out a scoff despite the situation he was in, the young master of laws studied the man's smug face ; the dim light of the deserted hall casting ominious shadows across the chiseled lannister features. unlike most others renly wasn't intimidated by him, by ANY of them, probably because he overestimated his privileges as the king's brother && a beloved public figure. a part of him knew it was still unwise to continue provoking them, but he also knew not even jaime lannister was stupid enough to do him serious harm. so this uncalculated attempt at frightening him was .. quite amusing, actually.
"alright, i suppose you've made your point .. can we call it a night now ? i am exhausted." aye, poking fun at cersei from across the high table all night long as robert laughed and fondled serving wenches in the background had certainly taken its toll on poor renly.

Dany antis' "metas" about how Dany is totally naive about Westeros really shows they just haven't read the books, or at least not her chapters. They'll rant about how she expects the people to just bow down to her, when in reality that was how Viserys (and later Young Griff) thought due to Illyrio's words. Meanwhile Dany, "mistrusted Illyrio's sweet words as she mistrusted everything about Illyrio." (AGOT Daenerys I) Dany knows that it takes more than a name or even dragons to be worthy to rule. That's a major piece of what sets her apart from other rulers in ASOIAF.
Robert took the throne because he was the foremost head of the rebellion and had some Targaryen blood. Joffrey and Tommen rule(d) because of their perceived relation to Robert. Stannis laid his claim based on being Robert's brother. Renly laid his not only because of blood, but also popularity with the lords and sheer number of troops. Robb was crowned because he was his father's son.
Dany knows she how fickle allegiance owed to a name is, she knows how the lords turned on her family and saw the hospitality in Essos fade when she and Viserys had nothing. She also knows simply scaring them into following her with dragons and armies won't work, she scared the shit out of the masters in Astapor and Yunkai, yet as soon as she turned her back they went back to slaving. In Meereen, she had her armies and her titles, yet the Sons of the Harpy constantly defied her.
Dany knows the Westerosi people won't just bow to her when she arrives (though stories of her are causing quite a stir lmao), she knows she will have to fight for her throne and make alliances. She understands that she will have to prove herself to the people and lords, after all, why else would they follow her? Her Khalasar only followed her after she proved herself strong, the Unsullied followed her when she proved just (after she freed them), Barristan Selmy swore himself to her only after observing her for a long period, and the rest of the Dothraki will follow her only after she proves herself once again.
Every time Dany has lead, it's because she proved herself to be worthy following, not because she's a Targaryen or the Mother of Dragons. Why would she suddenly forget this when she gets to Westeros? Well bad writing is the answer in the show, which is why in the books, she won't just become entitled.
There's different character who already has that characteristic: Young Griff. He expects the lords of Westeros to follow him against the Lannisters and Baratheons without question and for Dany to swear herself and her dragons to him and even marry him simply because he is (supposedly) the son of Rhaegar. Young Griff is a subversion of the lost prince trope, he is not only a fake but also exhibits qualities reminiscent of Joffrey (according to Tyrion), so not exactly a great candidate for king. Yet Dany antis insist on putting the sense of entitlement on Dany while portraying "Aegon" as a true heir and worthy king that evil Dany will kill in her lust for power.
Dany antis will formulate arguments against her purely out of thin air and shitty writing. They will ignore any and all actions she has done when ruling and when talking about it, rather choosing to force their fanon ideas on her and give her true qualities to their favs instead.

Thinking of the most prominent succession struggles in asoiaf and realizing that a good majority of them are not even because of some evil bastard usurping their trueborn relative. Alys Karstark’s dilemma is caused by her uncle wanting to forcibly marry her and steal her birthright. Renly is Stannis’ trueborn brother and yet he declares himself king despite Stannis being older. Euron is Balon’s trueborn brother and Asha’s uncle and yet look at what he did. Littlefinger wants to use a trueborn Harry Harding to take over Sweetrobin’s rights (though not so openly). And the Dance of the Dragons was between a trueborn pair of brother and sister. And if we are to see a repeat of it, it will be between a trueborn daughter of the last Targaryen king (Dany) and a trueborn son (Aegon) of the previous crown prince.
That’s what makes the whole “Jon was a threat to Catelyn’s children” argument so frustrating because people act as if Jon was a ticking time bomb that was going to blow at any minute, purely on account of him being a bastard. When historically, we’re given much more precedent for trueborn relatives to usurp each other.
This frustrating argument arises out of two problems:
ASOIAF stans are not engaging as critically with the text as they should be. Catelyn’s historical evidence lies in the series of Blackfyre Rebellions which happened after a legitimized bastard rose up against his brother. But context is key here. Not only were there several factors that led to this fallout (e.g., Daemon being given the conqueror’s sword Blackfyre, anti-Dornish sentiment not working in Daeron’s favor, Daeron himself being a suspected bastard, Daemon’s overall popularity, etc), but people ignore Bloodraven (a BASTARD!) who supported his trueborn brother’s claim during this series of conflicts. Daemon did not rebel because all bastards are inclined to treachery and all bastards bring evil to those around them. If any bastards raised near trueborns are a threat to the trueborn’s inheritance, then why not Bittersteel? Why not Shiera? Why didn’t other Stark bastards rebel against their trueborn siblings? Several factors led to the conflict specifically between Daemon and Daeron. Instead of taking Catelyn’s filtered history at face value, we should instead recognize that Daemon was given legal basis to push for his claim (after a series of events that symbolically recognized him as the worthy and true heir) as he was now a legitimized son, and succession struggles are, more oft than not, likely to happen between recognized legitimate competing claims. And here’s the thing, Ned Stark at no point indicated that he was going to give Jon legitimacy in the North. And he never indicated that he would give it to Jon over Robb. On the contrary, everyone knew that Robb was the heir. Robb was the one being given lessons, Robb was the one helping Ned attend to visiting lords, Robb was the one who would inherit Ice, etc. By Alys’ account in ADWD, preparations were being made for Robb’s future (NOT for Jon, who was largely ignored). There was no opportunity for Jon to pose any threat to Robb or his children because Ned did not give him legitimacy and he did not allow him to gain backing with the Northern lords. Aegon IV created Daemon and his subsequent rebellion(s), but Ned Stark did not do the same with Jon. Despite Catelyn treating Jon as a walking crisis center, there’s little evidence to the effect. In fact, we might as well say that Bran or Rickon or any of Sansa’s or Arya’s sons would pose an even bigger threat to Robb’s legacy than Jon would, you know given historical precedent and all that.
Treating Jon’s mere existence as one that inherently comes with dire consequences for “le poor trueborns” plays into bastardphobia, which is actually in world bigotry (and grrm considers Jon to be a marginalized individual on account of his bastardy). Saying that Jon is a threat to the Stark kids is saying that all bastards are threats to trueborns but like….so are the trueborns. History, actual hiatory, shows us that trueborns are a bigger threat to each other. But no one is saying “Bran is a threat to Robb’s kids” even though there is precedent. Bran is also getting a lordling’s education just as Robb is, and Bran is allowed to engage with the upper class on important occasions and gain visibility just as Robb is, and Bran is even expected to command his own castle and men (which would even give him ability to stake his claim). So why isn’t he a threat? Instead, Jon is the one who is singled out - because he’s a bastard. He’s being singled out because Catelyn said he should be singled out, despite there being little actual evidence to his supposed incoming usurpation. Which is ironic because the literal purpose of his story is to critique these bigoted views. Jon is just as honorable and good and kind as any other trueborn son, if not more so. And we have seen him sacrificing his own happiness for his siblings (e.g., the direwolf pups and refusing Winterfell because he will not usurp Sansa’s rights). It’s one thing for Catelyn to show ignorance, but we as readers should know better because we have a full picture and not only do we have an understanding of the history being cited by Catelyn (and what is being purposefully ignored), we also know Jon. So we should be saying, “wait no, there’s no indication that Jon is any more a threat than any one of Ned’s sons”.
It is understandable (but not justifiable tbh) that Catelyn is biased against Jon; he is the ever present product of her husband’s affair. But that’s just it, she’s biased. So she has a biased application of history. And she has a biased (and bigoted) view of Jon’s place in it. We as readers have a full picture though. So shouldn’t we be having more nuanced dialogue regarding this instead of taking her biased word for it?
