do not have the fucking energy for ryan mnrphy stans anymore so here we go:
ryan murphy is making a movie about jeffrey dahmer. setting aside the fact that we shouldn't be sensationalizing stories about serial killers, ryan murphy, specifically, should get the fuck away from the jeffrey dahmer story, and how this fucking film is going to just be performative torture porn that dehumanizes victims.
for those of you who don't know about jeffrey dahmer, here are links to what he did. PLEASE be extremely cautious with yourselves. there are extremely explicit descriptions of torture, necrophilia, sexual assault, murder, dismemberment, and cannibalism.
cw for explicit description of one of the murders under the cut:
before i saw that ryan murphy was the writer/director i had some vague hopes for this film. i don't agree with any serial killer movie just on the basis of the fact that i truly and deeply believe that we should not be giving these people the hollywood treatment, but i was SLIGHTLY optimistic because it looked like there were black characters who weren't just there to be murdered by dahmer! but then i saw murphy's name, and actually watched the trailer, and oh boy i have not seen such dehumanizing shit in a while.
the thing about this that's pissing me off so much, beyond the fetishization of YET ANOTHER serial killer, is you cannot fairly and accurately discuss the murders committed by jeffrey dahmer without discussing race and racial conflicts in milwaukee in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. jeffrey dahmer was able to kill so many people (SEVENTEEN. SEVENTEEN.) because he was a white man and his victims were, predominantly, men and boys of color. they were queer. they were sex workers. they were fucking children. you cannot and should not and should NEVER present the story of the people who were murdered by jeffrey dahmer without focusing on that point. you can't discuss how jeffrey dahmer got away with it for years--from 1978 to fucking 1991--without acknowledging that he was white.
the story that breaks my heart is the story of konerak sinthasomphone, a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD LAOTIAN REFUGEE who was the younger brother of one of dahmer's sexual assault victims. dahmer injected acid into his skull. konerak got away, and asked two passing black women for help, but cops those women called BROUGHT HIM BACK TO DAHMER because dahmer claimed that konerak was a) drunk, b) 19, and c) his boyfriend. this in 1991.
you cannot separate the horror of dahmer's predation and killings without an intimate and thorough examination of racism and queerphobia, not just in dahmer but in milwaukee, in wisconsin, and in law enforcement as a whole. i do not fucking trust ryan murphy to do that. i barely trust him to own a pet.
jeffrey dahmer murdered 17 people. half of them were black men. only three were white. this story could not and should not be told by a white man, especially a white cis gay man who thinks his shit doesn't stink while simultaneously pulling off some of the most egregiously racist torture porn that i've seen in DECADES.
fuck this movie. fuck this movie. fuck ryan murphy and fuck netflix for enabling him.

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking, I hear mixed stuff about Ryan Murphy e.g. whilst he's quite progressive in terms of queer media, in some instances not so much? Like he doesn't like bi people ?
He despises bisexual people, unfortunately. That was pretty evident from his writing of bi characters on glee and there’s evidence (in naya riveras book I believe) that when he had issues with people or certain things, he’d add it to the script in some way where a character was mean to another character based on who he was mad at bts, like how he completely wrote Quinn out of the final season bc Diana Agron wouldn’t take his shit anymore when he mistreated her and her character.
The reason why I think he’s biphobic is bc of how he wrote characters to disregard bisexuality as someone who will cheat or having a character straight up dismiss it by saying that person is trying to tiptoe out of the closet instead of just being full on gay.
He had Brittany cheat on her bf with Santana and then when Santana had moved to New York, she was happy to date a lesbian who she “won’t have to worry about straying for penis.” I just know that anything RM writes, that there’s bleed through from his own personal beliefs and I don’t trust him to be good to bi characters.
Hopefully others will take over on writing Buck or Oliver puts his foot down to make sure RM doesn’t mishandle this story.
(Unrelated: I just started rewatching schitts creek today lol)

so that blogger seriously tried to tell you lea's behavior wasn't racist and called samantha ware a liar? but, i bet she probably wouldn't ask a woman to produce receipts if she'd been harassed. white feminists are so transparent! p.s. my mom died when i was a kid and i hate it when people bring up cory as reason why we shouldn't call her out for being a bully. there are years worth of stories about how awful she is.
Hi Anon,
First, I'm sorry for your loss and I get it that I am no stranger to grief myself. Cory Monteith's death was tragic. However, it's not a green light for terrorizing your coworkers and it definitely doesn't excuse racial abuse and microaggressions. Ironically, the point of my post really was that Lea Michele and Emma Roberts deserve the heat they got for what they did, but Ryan Murphy's willingness to enable this kind of behavior on his sets shouldn't go unchallenged.

Okay, so. I never understood why they made jokes about Finn’s weight. I didn’t think he was fat or chubby. In fact, I’ve always thought he was skinny. He was a normal weight. He was cute!
I know Ryan put the jokes in there because Cory was self conscious about his weight- and that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms to unpack at some point- but I wish he hadn’t done that

okay, I'm having thoughts. Ryan Murphy's obsession with pregnancy is insane. like, he usually examines it from a horror lense, so he seems to find it horrifying, which, fair, but considering the cis male of it all, it's not giving horror the way it should be; it's giving misogyny lmao.
for real, honestly. like, men should not be trusted to write certain things that are about women and their bodies. like yeah, giving birth is fucking terrifying if you heard that you might not survive, but it's not always like that

I had to look up if Ryam Murphy wrote this episode and Why Did I Even Bother I Know He Wrote It.
Of course the guy who assaulted the wheelchair user gets his momemnt while last year he was kicked out for the same thing. Of course this white knight's reasoning to help the lesbian he outed was because she was his first and that means something. She means something to him.
SHE'S A LESBIAN YOU MORON IT LITERALLY CANNOT MEAN LESS
This is by far the worst part of the episode for me. WHY would he bring it up??? And why don't more people focus on this tomfoolery instead of bRiTtAnY sHouLdvE sAng IKAG
Prom-asaurus? Lol yeah I wondered for a second when rewatching but there's truly no one else who'd hate Quinn this much. I guess the rest of the writers treat Finn as this golden fucking boy as well but the hatred of Quinn and willingness to frame her as a villain feels unique to RM by late season 3. So petty. But yeah case in point for the Finn stuff, Flopson writing IKAG.
And the whole virginity thing... God. I hate it so much. I hate it more than I could ever say. Well, that's not true, I probably could explain all the reasons why it sucks so much lol. But you already know, Anon. How could they get this script past any sort of check or review? I won't for a second believe Ali Adler had a say beyond the Abuela scene because surely any self-respecting queer woman would take one quick look at "you were my first; that means something to me" and shut that shit down. A lesbian's worth being defined by the guys she fucked, we love that 🙃🙃 Santana and comphet part two here we gooooo
bRiTtAnY sHouLdvE sAng IKAG
Lmao Anon 😂 Don't get me started. When that's the issue people have,,, Not even the song choice itself! Or the shit upon shit that is this episode in general. Sigh. The only thing coming close to being more frustrating than IKAG itself is fans being stupid about it.

Why the hell does Ryan Muphy try to present Rachel Berry as a hard worker?
Glee constantly talks about how hard Rachel works but we never see that.
Whenever Rachel has real competition she either sabotages them or throws a fit until she gets her way.
Where is the hard work? To prove she's better for the part? You know actually freaking compete!
The only reason Mr Scue even gives her everything is she reminds him of his ex-wife and he's deluded himself into thinking she always has to be happy. Mr Schuster decided she’s a star without her doing anything to prove it.
And of course she’s better then everyone in Lima in terms of training most parents of the people in Her small town  didn’t have millions of dollars to drop of vocal and tap dancing lessons.
Most of the other Glee kids didn't have that kind of money or resources. So of course Rachel is going to be better than almost all of the club in terms of vocal training. She’s a big fish in a small pond.
Rachel also undercut everyone's confidence and constantly took opportunities away from other kids that would have given them to chance to expand their horizons and improve. Which is why the others bearly get any better. They weren’t even allowed to grow as performers.
Whenever Rachel has real competition she either sabotages them or throws a fit until she gets her way or quits.
Where is the hard work? To prove she's better for the part? Half the time Rachel costed off mr Schusters predujists as well involving Kurt. She brags about Kurt being her biggest competition but lets be honest of course the straight girl is going to beat out the Gay kid just by virtue of being more marketible especally in a small homophobic town. So its not that impressive.
The only reason Mr Scue even gives her everything is she reminds him of his ex-wife and he's deluded himself into thinking she always has to be happy. And is his golden goose despite her doing nothing to earn that.
Rachel isn’t actually a hard worker she just had more money, oprotunties handed to her bearly had any real competition and mostly whined her way to victory. As well as controlling Glee Club with such an iron fist no one was allowed to reach her level.

The thing about When They See Us as brutal as it was is that the Exonerated Five wanted to talk about what was done to them and they were included in the process of telling their story. One review said that Monster was putting the victims first, but is that really an accurate statement if their families say content like this adds to their pain and trauma?
