The amount of ice cold “i don’t like it, and therefore it should be against the rules” takes i’m hearing about the otw elections and ao3 rules is as insane as it is exhausting. Ao3 is an ARCHIVE. The tag system is created to allow you to find what you want, and block content you don’t want. It is not a commercial enterprise, and should not be sanitized by parties trying to force it to look that way. "Cleaning up” the site by destroying tag groups (even ones YOU PERSONALLY may not like, such as underage, non-con, dub-con etc.) WIll not stop people from creating this stuff.
It will just make it harder to avoid, because the tags won’t exist, and it will be impossible to block/blacklist the content. And therefore will be floating around without a warning label.

CP isn’t justifiable, under any circumstance. If there’s anything worth getting up in arms about, it’s CP. This is exactly why Tiffany G’s campaign has decided to use anti-CP as their cornerstone. To elicit strong reactions.
Chinese creators are telling you that it isn’t about CP. Victims of childhood SA who are creators are telling you that it isn’t about CP. Tiffany G’s actions are telling you that it isn’t about CP. It’s time to listen.

300 Works on AO3 Check In
I now have 300 works up on AO3. The only harassment from Antis I've received is a hate Ask from an Izzy-Anti and a nasty comment from an anon really upset that I included a pit bull in my fic.
I've also gotten dogpiled, rude comments, and my works reported for talking about racism, but those people don't typically identify as "Antis".
For that matter, you get people who do identify as Antis but don't harass anyone. And most people in fandom have something they dislike but keep that to their own blogs rather than harassing anyone, even if they feel really strong about it. Like, in my current fandom (The Locked Tomb), a lot of the fandom really does not like John Gaius (my blorbo) or second cousin incest ship Camilla/Palamedes (my OTP), but I have not received any harassment for my fandom content here.
So let's talk about strawmen, exaggerated harm, and Making Up A Guy.
See, the reason I started doing these check ins is that I'd encounter breathless warnings about Antis harassing people across fandom. Don't leave comments turned on for your dark fic, the warnings would go, or you'll get harassed. You can't ship X without getting harassed, I was told.
And it just wasn't matching up with my experiences, even though I'm a prolific fic writer who writes a variety of content for a multitude of ships.
Oh, Antis who harass people exist. Like I said, I've encountered them. And I've seen the same happen with others. But I feel like the fear of Antis on a pan-fandom basis outstrips the actual threat. (It seems like some fandoms have a worse Anti harassment problem than others. Our Flag Means Death is bad, and I've heard horror stories about Voltron. But that's the thing: the warnings I see don't narrow their scope to a few specific fandoms; they treat it as if every fandom is as bad as Voltron.)
Now let's talk about Tiffany G. Last year, Tiffany G ran for the AO3 board. Now, like all candidates, she had to meet certain volunteer requirements; not just anyone can run for an AO3 board position.
Tiffany G made some comments about wanting to push back against misconceptions of AO3, and fandom lost its damn mind. She got accused, no lie, of being an infiltrator spy for the Chinese government. Hey, if you're ever wondering why the AO3 board isn't more diverse, it's because when a Chinese fan ran, fandom rallied together to slander her as a spy for the Chinese government. Fans openly celebrated when she lost. Which, you know, has to be a really shitty experience for a devoted AO3 volunteer.
And she was positioned as an Anti and a threat to fandom.
Fandom collectively Made Up A Guy. The phantom menace they'd made up didn't reflect who Tiffany G actually was or what she wanted. It was a caricature - a strawman for fandom to band together and destroy. But there was a real human person being targeted by all that ire.
So what's going on?
Well, out in meat space, there is a lot of censorship and repression, from the U.K. banning protests to the U.S. banning everything from books to gender affirming care to a thousand other shitty things happening all over the globe.
And that can make people feel genuinely powerless. Making Up A Guy to destroy is easy. It makes people feel like they've accomplished something.
But they haven't accomplished anything.
Well, except for probably making one dedicated AO3 volunteer (Tiffany G) feel like shit. Good job, everyone. You didn't stop fascism, but you hurt one random person.
And this is what all the warnings about Antis harassing people are about, why they're broad instead of narrow and why they tend to overstate the [real!] problem.
Because it's about Making Up A Guy that fans can feel so brave for opposing.
Because that's easier than actually doing something.

I absolutely agree that anyone eligible for the current AO3 board election should vote for ANYONE BUT Tiffany G. Her statements worry me. I believe that she would either be completely unhelpful, or actively try to work against AO3's goals.
However, if she somehow does get elected (and I doubt she will, from the backlash I've seen), that is NOT the end of AO3. It would simply be the beginning of a problem. She would be one outnumbered board member.
Please don't spread unnecessary panic. It is enough that an anti may be trying to get on AO3's board. We don't need to pretend that AO3 will immediately collapse if this one single person gets elected.
(If you donated at least $10 to AO3 between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, however, please vote against her.)

Hey, so if anyone has a Reddit account, maybe we could get this AO3 thing fatured on ADV's weekly China Show podcast? They are 2 guys who used to live in China, but are now anti CCP activist. Lot of Chinese followers, too, I followed them for a long time before they had to flee China. Doubt they even know what AO3 and fanfiction are, so in depth explanation would be needed. Their subreddit is ADVChina.
I do have a Reddit account, but I'm going to ask you and anyone else to stop right there. We don't need to bring this issue to a wider, non-fandom audience.
I understand your worries and empathize with them. I also fear the CN gov't -- I'm Han Chinese ethnically and my entire extended family lives on the mainland. I grew up hearing from my parents about how much communist rule sucked -- in fact, my dad was in Beijing during the Tian'anmen Square protests (6-4). So believe me when I say I am anti-CCP as hell and hate, hate, HATE the idea of Chinese censorship coming to a website I love like AO3.
HOWEVER. As I said in my post, there is next to no chance of the candidate in question winning and successfully implementing their ideas, so why should we invite outsiders to pile on and scream even more?
And as for this whole thing being a potential Chinese psyop?
Aside from the extremely obvious answer that anyone who is ACTUALLY a spy would be so much more subtle in their attempts to join the Board -- I promise you, the OTW and AO3 are the lowest priority on the CCP's radar, if they are on it at all.
I unfortunately know that the CCP does indeed try to gain footholds in cultural organisations internationally. They use their own culture as a bridge for that as well. I am EXTREMELY aware of this; I won't tell you how I know, but suffice to say I unfortunately know of some people involved.
I don't want to cause more conspiracy mongering either -- I don't think their efforts are going to be very successful, just judging by how ineffective Russia has been in keeping footholds in the West when push comes to shove -- but this tactic does exist.
AO3, to put into perspective, is laughably tiny of a target for anyone but furious fans and antis. The OTW is a made up of roughly a thousand people or so, and all of them are volunteers. The budget might seem large to you, but it has yet to break into the millions, which is more typical for an organisation of this size. Finally, the userbase, while it IS in the millions, is global. That's a few million people in a world of seven BILLION. We are not an attractive target.
The CCP would rather target organisations in capital cities like London, D.C., or Ottawa. They want IRL officials and politicians to be swayed by them. They want larger reach and more international currency flowing in their direction. The OTW is not useful for any of these goals.
So no, please don't go on Reddit and ask non-fandom people to get involved in this entire mess. It has gotten too many people whipped up into a frenzy already (concern is justified! excessive anxiety and terror and anger is... not).
Please don't add more wood to this fire, anon.

I don't give a fuck about how if that tiffany g gets elected will change ao3 policies she's still a minority among the otw board but the thing that she may be from the CN government is not unfounded istg just listen to Chinese people on this instead of claiming all arguments against her is sinophobia

Man, a lot of the commentary is pretty harsh
Re the Tiffany G thing and the OTW elections, I think people are being a bit dramatic.
No, I don’t want her on the Board. I don’t think you should want her on the Board either.
But a lot of the commentary is like “Hasn’t she heard of strikethrough?” and the reality is that she probably hasn’t if she’s younger and especially because she’s from mainland China. She could easily have been using AO3 for years and not know that much about its founding. Her English is good now, but has it been good for that whole time?
I’m not going to give her a complete pass like “aww, widdle baby doesn’t speak English and didn’t know what she was saying”. That’s rude and clearly untrue. But it seems like people are making zero allowance for the difficulty of expressing oneself in a foreign language and zero allowance for different cultural backgrounds in how people phrase things and talk about issues, and that’s not great either.
I think she’s too focused on appeasement and her own past shame, and that opens the door to manipulation by puritywankers, but whatever kind of better outreach she’s envisioning might actually be fine if she really is talking about better communicating what AO3 is to fans in mainland China and not about removing content. Most fans there hadn’t heard of it till the ban and all the wank around it. I’m sure there is considerable misinformation. I don’t think PR should be a major OTW priority, but if Chinese fans see a need and a way to fill it, that could be good. (TBH, it doesn’t sound like Tiffany is super experienced or confident just as an individual person, so IDK if other mainland Chinese fans would actually agree with her, but it’s worth keeping an open mind.)
I mean, yes, don’t vote for her, but also don’t assume everything she said is just a 1:1 clone of US-y anti garbage without at least trying to investigate the cultural context and her attempts at clarification. US puritywank does poison other fandom communities, but if someone is primarily doing fandom not in English, they may have a pretty different frame of reference. Just something to think about.

Oh so the AO3 drama is there's some lady named Tiffany G who is running to be elected to the Fanfic High Council or something and she's slightly more anti-CP than your average AO3 libertine and because she's Chinese they're saying it's a CCP plot to censor their beloved fanfics, because why not just be a p*do when you can also be a racist and anticommunist. Lol. Everything I learn about that site is a glimpse into the absolute nadir of the fandom id.

AO3 Election Candidates!
If any of you are members of AO3 and eligible to vote in the election this weekend I would highly encourage it! The site has a great webpage (https://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/22947) where you can do your own research on candidates, and I would definitely recommend everyone to check that out!
What sparked my interest in the first place were other people raising concerns about Tiffany G who is running for the board but does not seem to stand for the positions that AO3 is most known and loved for.
My personal impressions of the candidates will be down below, but please take these opinions with the understanding that I'm not attempting to sway votes (except for maybe away from Tiffany) and just provide my thoughts. These are also the notes I'll be using to cast my personal ballot
Natalia G - Fourth pick I like her Q&A answers well enough. She emphasizes the legitimacy of fanworks and references the terms of service. She does reference the attacks against AO3 which shows an awareness of the issues that are relevant, but doesn't make any strong statements that show a firm stance. Her diversity responses emphasize the push for a blocking feature, but nothing super concrete beyond that.
Noemie B - Third pick Noemie explicitly warns of the dangers of censorship and references that every platform has specific terms of use and committees in place to protect and develop. She cites a personal affection for AO3 which is important to me, but she also doesn't cite a negative experience and idk if thats a kind of willful positivity or not?
I do like that she cites user responsibility in exposure to problematic content and again points out the dangers of censorship. She also recognizes anti-blackness and transphobia as issues and cites specific actions and events to combat that.
Michelle S - Second pick Michelle also emphasizes the TOS and states that she has no plans to prescreen content or increase moderation, but she doesn't directly address concerns regarding censorship or the abuse towards the PAC team.
her diversity responses, like Noemi, reference the push to hire a diversity consultant. She specifically references AO3's existing features to handle harrassment and curate content, but doesn't take credit or promise any specific new features. Instead, she points out that the AD&T committee are the wizards who do that. She mentions maximum inclusivity and stresses user responsibility which are plusses in my book. She states she signed the June 2020 statement on racism as a chair
Heather M - Likely my first pick Heather is more user-focused in her response surrounding frustrations with the OTW. She also mentions the attacks against volunteers and has a nice statement about the response following the attack. She also cites a personal affection for AO3 and states that monitoring content is a ridiculous standard.
Her diversity responses are very strong to me as she shows an awareness of the racism in fandom but also an understanding of how systemic the issues truly are. She specifically references the proposed block feature and even cites a difference between active harassment and unintentional ignorance. She also cites specific features available to users to curate content and stresses the stance of maximum inclusivity. Her experience on the policy and abuse team is also a big plus. She also speaks about the history and purpose of the OTW.
Tiffany G - last pick She is definitely the most concerning of the candidates. Her statements are pretty sweeping and general and she doesn't list a lot of concrete stances or experiences except for personal anecdotes that dont always support her points. She is just as worrisome as the other posts make her out to be and doesn't answer with the same maturity and experience as the other candidates. I know im not saying as much about her specific stances but its hard to find anything of substance to even pull over into this post.
also in one interview she was weirdly against NSFW content which like... is kind of the whole reason AO3 exists
Obligatory Disclaimer: this is purely my personal impressions and opinions. I have been using AO3 for at least 5 years now (likely much longer) and been a member for over three. I've donated a considerable amount to the organization since AO3 in turn supports my livelihood as a writer, so i do have a vested interest in the well-being of the website also i think free speech and transformative works are important

watching two subreddits and all of twitter getting mobilized to vote for the AO3/OTW elections cause of a weirdo anti trying to get on the board is magnificent and also i wish i had donated this year to prevent this person from having a seat. so if you can vote... don't vote for tiffany g.

Am I going to have to make a post abt the otw elections? Because everyone seems to be taking tweets at face value again
(I am a volunteer, everything I say is me speaking for myself, not for the organization, all opinions are mine)
"Don't vote for her we don't want another Tiffany g situation" yeah, we don't. The harassment Tiffany faced was disgusting. The conspiracies that veered wildly into anti-chinese rhetoric were awful.
Looking into Audrey is like.
Yes, she ran republican. In a state where the only hope of winning is going with that party in some places. She is not homophobic or transphobic, though. Before she was bullied into hiding her Twitter she had some pretty pro-queer leftist stuff on there. I dont trust that the other non profit she is affiliated with is great, but that doesn't make her 100% gung-ho pro-censorship.
I wouldn't vote for someone willing to affiliate themselves with that party, and her answers weren't strong, but my god
Stop the fear-mongering. Stop thinking its an infiltration to take down the otw.
This level of harassment is disgusting. Do better. People have gone after her paying job about this.
Everyone is too scared of this idea of evil antis scheming away to take over the organization by.... making it through rounds of applications? Volunteering their time and efforts and energy for at least 6 months? Legally having to reveal their entire name in connection with the organization if they win and thus have this association for the rest of their life?
Stop spreading conspiracy theories. Stop harassing people.
Do fucking better.

I really hate that fandom antis/purity police are trying to make jokes about and/or frame the possible takeover of AO3 by Tiffany G as "haha the freak proshippers are upset there might be REAL moderation on their site and that they won't be able to post their written kiddy incest porn". Like aside from the fact that literally nobody on AO3 is forcing you to look at any of the fanfics on there (and that 98% of said fics feature fictional characters and not real people who could be harmed by these fics), AO3 is like the only fanfiction site that lets its users have total creative freedom that's still left online and if Tiffany G succeeds and puts in bans on content that a lot of other groups of people who don't write that kind of ficiton will be affected too. The majority of fics on AO3, despite what every brain diseased tumblr anti says, are not incest, agegap, or non-con/dubcon; most of them are regular NSFW fanfics, and a lot of them feature LGBT content. If you think that Tiffany G's bans won't affect those fics as well then you've learned nothing from the past with Youtube and Tumblr also banning NSFW and conviently including LGBT content as 'NSFW'. I'm shocked that a website that boasts about how accepting of LGBT people and LGBT 'culture' it is is just so willing to throw LGBT people under the bus by making those types of posts like "oh if AO3 gets censored then it'll be like 9/11 for 40 year old women making Harry Potter fanfic" as if there aren't plenty of people who depend on AO3 as a place to put their MLM or WLW fiction, or just regular vanilla NSFW fanfiction in general.
You people have no fucking idea how good you have it with AO3, nor do you understand the wonderful fanfiction writers who might lose what's important to them. Just because its not important to YOU doesn't mean it isn't important to ANYONE.
