Analyzing "Demon in the Wood" (book) - Part 3

(Part 1, Part 2, Part 4 and Part 5 🫶)

⚠️TW: BULLYING⚠️

I managed to squeeze more than 20 images in this (yay!🎉) so prepare yourselves for a loong meta this time.

That's both amazing and creepy.

Imagine being so ancient that you have actually met those figures. While children in the future were being told fairytales at night, the Darkling lived inside those fairytales. He was part of them.

(It's like saying: "Oh my favorite fairytale is Cinderella!" and a guy next to you says: "Oh that girl? Yeah, met her. Not as pretty as they all say". And in the meantime, the story of Cinderella takes place at 1600s💀💀)

Baba Anezka appeared in "Little Knife".

Petyr of Brevno is a freaking Saint. The patron of archers.

Magda of the Black Woods appeared in "The Witch of Duva" and is a Saint as well. The patroness of bakers and abandoned women.

And Eryk has met them. (let that sink in)

Besides that, the obvious secretive life of Grisha is so painfully clear that antis seem to purposefully miss it. They need to seek each other by listening to rumors and looking in secret while most Grisha try to not be found at all.

Antis: "The Darkling forced Grisha to become soldiers and go to war!!"

And then accuse us for not reading the books.🙂

Before the Little Palace was built, the Grisha had no lives, with dignity and normality. They were living hidden in whatever they could find. Nothing was "permanent", like Eryk said in the Graphic Novel, always on the move and in fear. Trying to not draw attention to themselves out of fear of being exiled, killed, imprisoned, sold, tortured or experimented on.

Then the Darkling convinced the then-King of Ravka to allow him to build a home for them (after going to war for him). And when the Darkling went to find the Grisha, they were afraid of coming out of their hiding.

What if it was a trap from the King? What if they were killed?

Very few went with him and became soldiers because it was the only way for Ravka to accept them. Ravka was constantly involved in wars, so for Grisha to be soldiers was the only acceptable position they could have in this kingdom.

So no, Aleksander didn't make them soldiers because he didn't care for their fates. But because there was literally no other duty they would be allowed to carry. Become traders? No one would board their ship. Instead they would be captured. Become merchants? No one would buy from them. Instead they would be killed. Soldiers? Well yeah, because with their powers they would prove that they could be trusted with the safety of the kingdom. A safety the otkazat'sya needed. To fight the wars that the First Army couldn't win. Becoming servants of the Crown was their only option (and yes, the Darkling was also a servant of the Crown).

Okay I got this out of my chest 😭

Eryk seems really resigned that things will change. He's thirteen and hope for a change is bleak for him. He has seen first hand how low Grisha are in the "food chain". An ethnic group forsaken by everyone else.

His love for animals is so cute!!

I just imagine him standing down hidden and admiring wild animals from afar.

He just wanted to satisfy his needs. Stay at one place and go exploring and looking for tigers.

(The Darkling with any animal: "I just think it's NEAT!")

Also, his mother's "lessons" really annoy him. And it seems they do this wherever they go and with whoever they meet(?). Nevertheless, Aleksander was a brilliant child that grew to become a clever tactician and leader. Whenever his plans didn't work out in the Grisha trilogy, it was because he was letting his heart and feelings rule over his mind (aka: the whole Alina situation).

Baghra: "Aww you seem to really grow accustomed with power"

Baghra when her son gained power and position: "HELLO?? 911??"

Besides Baghra's hypocrisy, LOOK AT MY BABY'S SARCASM

"I want you to know my name. The name I was given, not the title I took for myself. Will you have it Alina?" - Ruin and Rising.

He didn't let just anyone read it. Only to the girl he fell in love with. Perhaps he did it to gain her trust back. Or out of his love of her. Or because he thought of her worthy to know it. She proved to be strong and also caring. She wouldn't betray his trust and let others know it.

"It's my own name I'm afraid of forgetting." - DitW.

"Aleksander. A boy's name, given up. Almost forgotten." - Ruin and Rising.

Or perhaps she gave his name to her so it wouldn't be forgotten.

All his life, his mother kept telling him "Don't say your name anywhere. Just don't. Don't let them touch you. Don't."

And yet he allowed both to Alina. It's not about him forgetting what his mother had taught him. But giving in to his feelings out of a desire to love and to be loved.

He loves evergreens 🥺

And let's not forget that he loved the forests so much that he decorated his room with it:

"The chamber was hexagonal, its dark wood walls carved into the illusion of a forest crowded with slender trees." - Siege and Storm.

Leigh explained in a Tumblr ask why she had the Darkling's room decorated with trees. I'll repost it one day for you.

GUYS HE TRIES SO HARD 😭😭

The way he was socially awkward as a kid and no one talks about it. When you have your mom telling you to stay away from people and peers then you don't socialise that much and (after a while) you don't how to properly do it.

Is he supposed to be friendly?

Is he supposed to be aloof?

His mother's constant warnings have made him confused about how to talk with other children.

"He'd stopped trying to make friends"

So he was making efforts to make friends and play but Baghra fucked this up and then he simply stopped trying. Reminds me how Leigh said that after losing his lovers, he stopped trying to be in relationships.

*that's your cue to cry*

Eryk: "Great. Another day for other children to run screaming from me. Just another lovely morning."

SYLVI IS SOOO CUTE (another baby to adopt 🥹)

And Eryk's certainty that she will be afraid of him.

STOP!! STOP RIGHT NOW!!

He smiled with her innocent curiosity. She didn't run. She liked it. And he was so relieved.😭

He couldn't get used to people's aggressiveness towards him. It hurt him, bro 😭

I feel sorry for Annika, man

She's not my favorite character in this book but I find her one of the most intriguing ones.

She has seen things. Lev hasn't. It's probable that he spent all his life inside that camp. But he definitely hasn't seen the way drüskelle hunt Grisha. Annika has and the way she's so overprotective with her sister shows how she can't afford to lose someone else too 😔

The evil villain was ready to defend a little otkazat'sya girl that he barely knew from a bully that insulted her.

Yup. We must hate him.

That just confirms my previous thoughts about how some Grisha only let the strong ones inside their camps. They can't afford to take anyone in. They only need more strength and protection not just random people.

Of course it's a possibility that the Ulle allows them to live there because he feels sorry for them. Throwing out a family is no easy thing.

The way he seems to care for the underdogs. Perhaps because, even though he had great powers, he too felt like one.

How he wanted to sound like: "LEAVE US ALONE!!"

How he probably sounded like: "leave us alone, okay?"

The Darkling is confirmed that he was a victim of bullying as a child.

It's such a far cry from the man that is portrayed in the trilogy. As a child we see him defending two girls (one of them otkazat'sya), he was bullied, he seemed giddy in the prospect of having a stable home and friends and showed regret and sadness when an otkazat'sya village was destroyed. As an adult he's a terrifying leading figure that inspires loyalty and respect and rarely shows his emotions.

It seems that somewhere down the line he hardened his heart, matured and learned and repressed any emotion that could sabotage his plans and heart.

Fuck immortality.

And he's so worried that he fucked up his hopes to stay at camp. He always worries that he'll ruin things. That he's a failure and a disaster for his mother and her plans.

Also, the way he's so afraid that they will fear him and run away from him. He does it "warily" so he still hasn't gotten used that. 😔

SYLVI IS MY ADOPTED DAUGHTER

Look at her being all cute!! Instead of being frightened of him, she wants to be like him 😭

His surprise 😭

It's so clear that he isn't used to this kind of treatment.

Just imagine how many times he's heard Baghra's scoldings to the point that he already knows what he is about to hear from her.

He had one hope and now he thinks it vanished. And he blames himself. For the danger that he'll bring to himself and his mother. He's so hard with himself...🥺

The feeling of someone holding his hand is strange to him. He doesn't know the feeling and hasn't been accustomed to it.

He wants to trust her and keeps finding good things in her as if he's trying to find reasons to do it.

"He had so many secrets. It felt good to share one"

So, contrary to popular belief, I don't think the Darkling was thriving and cheering inside of him for having so many secrets in TGT. Secrets are burdens you have to carry. He gave a personal one to Alina (his name) and he revealed some of his plans to her in S&B and S&S. He was a secretive person because he had to (and because he wanted to be one step ahead) but not because he enjoyed it.

That could have been the beginning of a beautiful friendship (or even a future cute romance, who can say?) but, alas, Grisha were living shit lives and were too desperate and scared.

It's a very interesting and spicy song for those two, cause in this song, Minos' opinions is represented by the tiger, the more dangerous choice. I like it!

Ugh, that thing Russell Lewis does...

... of dropping in devastating or revealing character information in off-hand bits of dialogue or the info on a tombstone you see for one second or this this that and the other. Right up until the final episode.

Some of the things that are really blink-and-you’ll-miss-it the first time around if you’re not careful:-

Bright lost his daughter. While way posher than most of the characters he’s still not from quite as upper class a background as his wife (who cheated on him at least once, though they weathered it). Her nickname for him means “tiger”. He doesn’t seem to have fit in comfortably at any point with anyone, perhaps indeed until he starts to bond more closely with Fred and Morse in the last 2-3 series.

Win was stalwartly in London for at least part of the Blitz. She once met a guy with a foot fetish who flirted with her and she’s still tolerantly amused decades later.

Constance was less than 20 when she had Morse. (AAAAAAAH.) (Everything about her marriage to Cyril sounds horrifying frankly.)

Max is gay and has a lost love (“and one was fond of me” / ”the one that got away”)

Fred grew up without indoor plumbing and generally in fairly intense poverty, he and Charlie at least (presumably Billy and I suspect their mother too) were physically abused by their father (who was an alcoholic).

Also on Fred: he was already an anti-fascist in the 1930s including when it meant joining with one of his colleagues (Sgt Vimes, who Sam was probably named after) against the rest. (Frankly Fred is the king of the “devastating info that is easily missed”, and that last point regards some moderately obscure knowledge to decode but it’s solid once you have that.)

Jakes’s non-Blenheim Vale background was very poor too, given his familiarity with the “Never-Neverland” of the kind of housing estate that replaced the kind of slum that Fred grew up in.

Dorothea has had a fricking epic past doing war correspondence etc..

Sam was bullied at school and didn’t tell his father because he was worried about how he would react.

Jim was brought up by his apparently rather obnoxious and judgemental grandmother, which might explain the desperate need to fit in and get on at all costs, as well as the extremely skilled peacemaking at times. He might have been in the navy before the police, though that’s a bit more uncertain.

Trewlove went to a posh enough school to have serious chess-playing as a thing. (She’s definitely the only person at the station with a comparable class background to Bright’s.)

And so on; I know I’ve missed out plenty of things here and especially I know there’s some info about Win that’s on the tip of my brain and I can’t quite remember. (I think she’s from Blackpool originally, e.g. and misses the sea? And did some war work outside London?) I weirdly couldn’t think of anything significant that’s not already foregrounded about Joan, Box, Fancy, or Monica; help me out here lovelies. :-)

This is on top of eveeeeerything about Morse, which is far more foregrounded but even he has things dropped in very casually sometimes.

Goodness they’re all so messy and I love them all so very very much. <3 (Though also: I so very much wish that Lewis gave just *more* to his women characters. I have the obvious reservations about Joan’s arc (I *like* Strange, but... hmmmmmmmmmm), and the obvious wishing that Monica and Trewlove especially had had far far more to do.)

(I tried to explain to various people that it was all a misunderstanding because they were being sarcastic about it. But they didn't believe me at all.)

My thorny emotions only stab me one-sidedly, and they don't listen to me.

I was trapped in a worse environment than before, and I was stuck in all directions.

(There are many people in the court who have a stronger dislike for Obsidian than in the city…)

(I guess it reflects the princes' idea that "reconciliation is impossible".)

Clavis: "Haha, don't look so glum. You haven't done anything wrong, have you?"

Clavis: "It is just right to follow the example of Lord Gilbert's brazenness and smile at the situation."

Nokto: "Oh, yeah. I think even King Highness would say, "So what?" I'm sure he’ll say that."

Nokto: "You are King Highness's direct subordinate, so you have to be tough."

Clavis: "The fox that borrows the authority of the tiger—or is it the rabbit?"

Nokto: "Ahaha, she's tough."

(Even in this situation, Nokto and Clavis are the same.)

I glance at the large number of letters piled up on the foreign policy faction's office desk.

The letters listed were inquiries about me, and the two seemed to be busy responding to them.

Although they are busy with unscheduled official duties, I don't hear any resentment.

(If I fret, I'll only make you two worry about me... Enough of this, look over the front.)

Emma: "Thank you. I'm certainly not doing anything wrong, so I have to be confident!"

Clavis: "Yeah, what's the big deal?"

Nokto: "By the way, "this" is just our official business. It's not something you care about."

Clavis: "Rather, it's really interesting that the friendly and anti-Obsidian factions have become clear, isn't it?"

Clavis: "So far, though, it looks like there's a lot of opposition."

Clavis: "Obsidian betrayed Rhodolite once in the past. It's hard to believe."

Nokto: "If you think about it, I wonder which side is King Highness now."

Clavis: "He's a militant. He's not looking to build friendships."

(I see…)

The ally's position is the guideline for the whole.

If Prince Chevalier does not have the idea of approaching Obsidian, the discussion will be extremely difficult.

(... Even if we show a friendly attitude, we do not know if the Obsidian country will betray us at all.)

(A good example is the way Prince Gilbert treats me.)

(I guess Prince Chevalier's way of thinking is rational and steady.)

It is difficult to swallow more than a glimmer of violence, even if one understands.

My own helplessness pierces my chest with a sense of emptiness.

Clavis: "Sometimes, I've been somewhat curious..."

Clavis: "What happened to your neck?"

(I knew you would ask.)

I gently placed my fingers on my bandaged neck.

Emma: "It's a secret."

Clavis: "Well... does that mean that you want to keep the hot night with Lord Gilbert to yourself?"

Emma: "No… it's not!"

Nokto: "If you have nothing to hide, you can say it, right?"

(… What should I do? I could say I was bitten, but I feel kind of embarrassed…)

Clavis: "Emma, don't make that face. Even if you don't mean it, Lord Gilbert will misunderstand you, won’t he?"

(Uh.)

Nokto: "… You can't possibly—"

Emma: "I was just bitten!"

(… I ended up saying it.)

Clavis: "Oh my…"

Nokto: "Did you know? A man who bites a woman is very possessive."

Nokto: "You might end up with bite marks soon."

Emma: "… It seems possible, and I don't like it."

(Even though it still tingles and hurts.)

Every time my neck hurts, I think of Prince Gilbert.

I should have been scared and in pain, but in the end, the only feeling left in my heart was sadness.

(As long as he is a real beast, the idea of approaching him is just a dream.)

(I thought about having a conversation with Prince Gilbert... but then I realized that I couldn't even do that without turning him back into a person.)

Though I always feel deceived by his refreshing and gentle smile,

Prince Gilbert has never been friendly with me or Rhodolite.

Whether I like it or hate it, the idea of "domination" won't change.

(His Majesty the Emperor may be behind it…)

As I unconsciously put strength into my fingers, a hand extended from behind me and grabbed me, pulling my hand away from my neck.

When I turned around, Cyril, who was standing beside me, shook his head as if troubled.

Clavis: "Emma, if your neck is bothering you so much, the gentle Prince Charming will prepare some medicine that works instantly, okay?"

Emma: "Prepare?"

Nokto: "I don't know. Despite his appearance, Clavis is a professional drug maker who has contributed to numerous medical breakthroughs."

Nokto: "… I'm not sure what to expect."

Clavis: "Do I have to say it twice?"

Emma: "… I can't believe you were such an amazing person."

Clavis: "Haha, did you fall in love? I'm a guilty man."

Clavis: "I'm afraid this is going to make Lord Gilbert jealous… but where's the important guy?"

Emma: "I don't know. I didn't see him, at least not this morning."

(I usually meet Prince Gilbert at the breakfast table, but...)

Since we came back together from his hideout, he must be at the court.

Nokto: "How unusual for someone who spends all his time with you." // "Isn't that unusual for someone like him to be with you all the time?"

Clavis: "In times like this, it's reasonable to assume he's planning some evil deeds."

Emma: "I hope that's not the case."

Emma: "… By the way, Prince Chevalier isn't here, is he?"

(Even though at this time of the day, he's usually in his office.)

Clavis: "He's been missing since this morning, too. I went to wake him up, but his room was empty."

Nokto: "It's unusual for King Highness to be active in the morning."

Clavis: "Oh. Where the hell did he go—"

Gilbert: "—That's rare, isn't it?"

Chevalier: ". . . . . ."

The sound of footsteps echoes in the chapel in the early morning air.

Gilbert, seated in the front row, crossed his legs without turning around and looked up at the ceiling.

Gilbert: "Greetings to the gods so early in the morning? Haha, I didn't know you were religious."

Chevalier: "… Nonsense."

He proceeded through the aisle leading to the altar, his white cloak fluttering gallantly.

He sat down on the opposite side of the seat without so much as a glance at the other person in front of him and let out a languid breath.

Chevalier: "It seems that you are the one who frequents the chapel."

Gilbert: "Isn't it relaxing to be in a quiet space?"

Gilbert: "You see, I hate people. Sometimes I miss the silence."

Chevalier: "Hating people makes me laugh."

Chevalier: "… I thought you were really repentant."

Gilbert: "Unfortunately, I don't have anything to repent for."

Chevalier: "I suppose."

Snickering, Chevalier looks up at the statue of the god sitting in the chapel.

Chevalier: "I'm going to ask you straight. What are you going to do with that?"

Gilbert: "By "that," you mean the little rabbit? Right…"

Gilbert: "I'm going to get her, and I'm going to take good care of her." // "I'm thinking of getting her and cherishing her."

Gilbert: "Because, even if her term as Belle ends, she won't be able to go back to town anymore, right?"

Gilbert: "Right now, rumors are circulating in town that "the girl in Akatsuki's bookstore is an Obsidian woman"..."

Gilbert: "Even the Obsidian pests will hear the rumors and come to see the little rabbit with all sorts of ideas."

Gilbert: "If she gets along with other guys without my knowledge, I'll be jealous."

Chevalier: ". . . . . ."

Chevalier caught his red eye softening. **

Gilbert: "What's that look on your face, like you're trying to say something?"

Chevalier: "I just don't think it's like you."

Chevalier: "As you know, that woman is not a noblewoman."

Gilbert: "Oh, you're just going to admit it."

Chevalier: "We're not in a public forum."

Chevalier: "You are famous for your brutality against those in power, but you are also rumored to be merciful to the weak."

Chevalier: "Even if I think about you in the past... isn’t it against your principles to hurt and corner a common woman?"

Gilbert: "Ahaha, that's just me as a member of the "royal family."

Gilbert: "Not in my private life, okay?"

Chevalier: "Oh, so any malice towards the rabbit is a private matter?"

Gilbert: "Yes. She honestly has nothing to do with my plans."

Gilbert: "It doesn't matter if you're there or not. You don't have to mess with it or not."

Gilbert: "Look, there's no point in a beast slowly torturing its prey without killing it, right? It's the same."

Chevalier: "You're not even interested in her position as "Belle"?" // "You're not even interested in the situation of "Belle"?" **

Gilbert: "Of course, I can't think of a plan to use it, but it's a bit troublesome to prove that she's Bell."

Gilbert: "There's no reason for me to go through all that trouble. Maybe not Benitoite and Jade, though."

Chevalier: ". . . . . ."

The conversation dies down, and a sacred silence returns.

After a moment of searching for something, Gilbert's sigh dissolved into the air.

Gilbert: "You must have figured out what I was after the other day with all that fuss."

Gilbert: "That's why I came here."

Chevalier: "… Ah."

Gilbert: "Okay? I'll at least listen to what you have to say since we've known each other for so long."

Chevalier: "Well? Then…"

Chevalier stands up and quietly draws his sword.

He took a few steps and drew a beautiful trajectory, which was intercepted by a jet-black cane.

Chevalier: "Can I see that cane of yours?"

Gilbert: "Eh, no. Why would I lend it to you?"

Gilbert catches the sword while sitting and laughs out of place.

In contrast, Chevalier etched a wrinkle between his beautiful eyebrows.

Chevalier: "At first I thought it might be a made-up sword, but the position of the cut is unnatural for that."

Chevalier: "If it were just a sword to begin with, there would be no need to disguise it. It's not forbidden to wear a sword belt."

Chevalier: "And it can't possibly be an ordinary cane either. Because according to the little rabbit, it has an unnatural weight to it."

Gilbert: "Then, what do you think?"

Chevalier: "100 years ahead… No, it's the crystallization of technology that's even further ahead, isn't it?" // "It's the culmination of technology that's a hundred years old... maybe even more."

Chevalier: "It's a new type of weapon that no continent has ever seen, with the potential to overturn the world."

The "World Disaster" says nothing.

He dismisses it with a refreshing smile that shows no signs of faltering.

Chevalier: "… When it is introduced to the battlefield, the continent will undoubtedly usher in a new era."

Chevalier: "The time of knights will be over, and the time will come when the common people will have weapons to fight."

Chevalier: "Obsidian's military development has been spectacular... but it seems to have gone far beyond my imagination."

Gilbert: "Fufu… Then why do you think I did what I did so that you would find out about it?"

Gilbert: "Chevalier, you are an uncertainty. Even if we advance our technology a hundred years into the future…"

Gilbert: "You're the only one who can come up with a plan that can overturn that." **

Gilbert: "I value you. I never underestimated you."

Gilbert: "What's the point of me giving you all this information if you can't even guess?"

Chevalier: ". . . . . ."

A small click of the tongue echoes through the chapel.

Gilbert: "Yes. Because we've already done the preparation."

Gilbert: "It's too late for you to realize it now. My piece is on the verge of checkmate."

Gilbert: "Rhodolite is now fanged... yet no one but you is aware of it."

Chevalier: "It seems so… But I have some concerns."

Gilbert: "What?"

Chevalier flicks the cane with his sword and returns it to its sheath.

Chevalier: "There's no reason to wait for a checkmate, is there?"

Chevalier: "You are ready. Then, execute it promptly."

Chevalier: "Why don't you do it?"

Gilbert: ". . . . . ."

Chevalier: "It's a contradiction, isn't it? Especially if you see me as a risk."

Chevalier: "The more time you give, the less chance you have of winning—there's no way you can't understand that reason."

Gilbert: "… Hmm."

Chevalier: "I see... it seems that there is a purpose that has not been read yet."

The glacial eyes stare down at the beast.

Chevalier: "Your evil deeds are very rational and worthy of the name "Ever-Victorious General," but..."

Chevalier: "Your own actions are wasteful and filled with contradictions."

Chevalier: "Even if I know "what to do," I can't honestly understand "what you want to do."

Gilbert: "You think I'm going to tell you nicely?"

Chevalier: "I'd like to hear it out…"

Gilbert: "You don't want to see what's in the cane… yet, do you? It's a bad bet for you."

Chevalier: "It's not bad to accept that bet, but I might accidentally kill you."

Chevalier: "It's troublesome to keep you alive, and it's troublesome to kill you."

Gilbert: "Ahaha, I'm the same. If I kill a prince in Rhodolite, I'll never get out of here alive."

Gilbert: "If you want to kill—"

Chevalier: "You have to figure out a way."

The two beasts laugh as their murderous atmosphere clashes in the air.

It was a smile that seemed to be deeply amused, as if no one else could understand it.

Gilbert: "Hey, I've answered a lot of questions, can I at least get something in return?"

Chevalier: "… I'll listen to you."

Gilbert: "It's about Little Bunny—"

—And again, silence returns to the chapel.

Chevalier's expression after hearing everything was not bright at all.

Chevalier: "… I don't want to say this out of my mouth, but…"

Chevalier: "The woman you like may be the most unhappy person in the world."

Gilbert: "It's obvious, isn't it? I'm the world disaster."

Chevalier: "There is that, but right now it's like..."

Gilbert: "Like what?"

Chevalier: "… Nothing, I thought something stupid."

Chevalier stands up gallantly after saying that his business is over and heads for the doorway.

He pushed open the heavy door without difficulty and stepped out into the blowing wind—

Gilbert: "Oh, I almost forgot. On a different note, I have a gift for Rhodolite."

With his back turned, Gilbert spins as if singing.

Gilbert: "Look forward to it, okay…?"

Jin: "I'll disturb you."

Emma: "Oh, Jin?"

While I was helping with official duties in the foreign policy faction's office, Jin came in with a package of sweets in one hand.

Jin: "Oops, you're here too."

Emma: "Yes. I was originally scheduled to help out today…"

Jin: "It's rare that that bastard isn't there."

Nokto: "Jin is the same as always."

Clavis: "Haha, that's why being with Emma has become the norm."

Emma: "… I'm having a headache."

Jin: "Stretch your wings while you still can. By the way, have you seen Luke?"

(...? Jin, you seem to be less relaxed than usual.)

Emma: "I haven't seen him."

Clavis: "So do I. It's rare for him to participate in official business, is it?"

Nokto: "Well, but I certainly haven't seen him around lately. I did manage to get him to attend the memorial service, though."

Nokto: "… No, wait, Jin, is that honey candy?"

Jin: "Yes. I asked Yves to make it for me a while ago, and it's a real masterpiece."

Jin: "I'm walking around the place with this, but I haven't seen him at all."

Clavis: "Oh my…"

Nokto: "… It's a strange situation."

Emma: "What's wrong?"

(Everyone seems to have suddenly changed the look in their eyes.) **

Clavis: "Luke never misses a hint of honey, no matter how far away it is."

Nokto: "Whether he's on official business or eating, as long as he smells the honey, he'll definitely come."

(I-I didn't know he likes honey that much.)

Aside from Jin and Clavis, even Nokto has a straight face, so it must be true.

Jin: "… I've been noticing that he's been acting a little strange lately."

Jin: "I was just curious and wanted to talk to him…"

Clavis: "Hmm, really? I didn't notice anything unusual…"

Nokto: "Me too. I think you're thinking too much. He's probably sleeping somewhere."

Nokto: "That's why Luke is most attached to Jin."

Clavis: "You can't stay in one room just because things are difficult."

Clavis: "A change of scenery is important. Isn't the air outside better when you're depressed?"

(Clavis…)

Clavis: "Cyril, just to be safe, you're coming with her. Or rather, from today onwards, you can be Emma's exclusive bodyguard."

Cyril: "Eh, is that okay? That's good, now I can get away from my troublesome master for the time being."

Cyril: "I'll do my best, so please look forward to it, young lady!"

Clavis: "… Oi."

Please Help These Animals

Hi. I'm not normally the type of person who shares random charity posts; this blog has a gimmick that I don't want to break. But this is something important to me, and with the number of followers that I've somehow amassed, I felt a responsibility to try spreading the word about someone in a desperate situation.

This is Enzo and Diego, two tigers who live in South Africa. Like me, you might have seen some of their more-famous videos on YouTube several years ago.

Their owner, Michael Jamison, takes in rescued animals and raises them in a safe environment. This isn't some Tiger King scenario; he's not a stereotypical crazy rich guy who just owns exotic animals because he can. He got wealthy with a telecommunications business and then sold it a long time ago, and now just works day in and day out tending his flock. He's nursed many sick and hurt creatures back to health over the years, including bottle-feeding animals who can't eat on their own and rescuing a third malnourished tiger (Ozzie) from a circus. The tigers have a massive enclosed area with a pool and a fort, lots of space and friends to interact with, and they clearly love their owner.

Well, the South African economy has completely collapsed in the last 2 years, thanks to Covid and government mismanagement, and Michael is essentially flat broke now. And the YouTube algorithm destroyed his passive income…no one watches his videos anymore, so he can't get the word out about what's happening. I myself was wondering what had happened to him, and suddenly he popped back up in my feed after several years. He made a vlog last week discussing the situation, claiming that he'd barely eaten in days.

You're on Tumblr. You're probably a fierce anti-capitalist or something. If you're looking at his house and all the shit he owns and wondering "Why would I give money to a rich guy? Why doesn't he sell stuff? The dude has a helicopter and a suit of armor in his effing living room..." well, remember, South Africa's economy is in the toilet for everyone. Not to mention their country's import/export sanctions, and his lack of consistent internet. Michael's trying hard, but he can't really sell things because there's no one to buy them.

That's the tragic irony - the dude has 1 million subs but his videos can't get 10k views, and is surrounded by all this rich guy crap but can't afford to eat. And, besides, this isn't really about him.

The government is threatening to take his house and his animals, and with the way things are in South Africa right now, it's a guarantee that they will not be put in good homes. They all rely completely on Michael and his girlfriend Jackie. They're family.

Stumbling on this situation broke my heart, and I don't want to see Enzo & Diego (or any of his other animals) lose their dad and be put down or thrown into an abusive third-world zoo environment. He has a paypal, a merch store, and a GoFundMe. If even a tiny fraction of my followers donated a tiny bit to keeping his head above water, or at least shared his videos with other people, it would help tremendously.

I just hope it's not too late.

Hey, I'm rambling about IkePri again

Okay, I just need to get these thoughts I have about Gilbert von Obsidian out because I enjoy predicting stuff and overthinking design and narrative choices even tho they might not be right. :P But there really isn't that much predicting other than me overthinking about narrative and design choices. This time there will be most likely spoilers of Gilbert's route so far, and route of Clavis and some thoughts I have just gathered while playing the game in general. I try to put these thoughts in cohesive order, but well... I don't know if I can really, because I just need to get these out of my head. These are my thoughts, ramblings and opinions. Feel free to form your own and certainly disagree with me! I apologize about the lack of art in this post. I'm busy with work currently so no fanart for a while. I'm also not native English speaker, so there might be grammatical errors and such. Sorry about that. Everything under the cut.

To start with Ikemen Prince is a romance visual novel first and foremost. That doesn't mean it can't be deep (and it certainly has been deeper than I initially expect, which left me positively surprised). I suppose there is somesort of thematic vibe that there is no prince whose ideals are the main thesis of the game itself. But that also kinda leaves that fact there is no huge catharsis regarding the world and it's state. Everything so far has been left quite open. And the more I have learned about lore of the world, I really feel like anti-monarchist here xd Clavis really sold me the idea for real. Or atleast throw away the absolute monarchy. That's where I think things should go, but that's my own belief. (really, the last king of Rhodolite... He umm... I have some opinions.) Chevalier and Gilbert First things first: I don't hate or dislike Chevalier as a character. There are just some things that give me Deus Ex Machina feels. But I know it is what they are going for with him. This genius that so far ahead of everyone that it is so alien concept to rest of the people. And well that is a very hard concept to pull off without being a genius yourself as a writer. Or that is what I feel like. But what I do love is what the writers are doing with him and Gilbert in thematic sense! (Hence why Chev x Gilbert sounds so juicy to me)

I really took steps to the deep end as I started to think about why I have enjoyed Gilbert's route or was interested in his story to begin with, but have little interest in trying Chev's one. Because they are so similar but they really aren't.

How I would describe it is that where as Clavis is the complementary to Chev, the purple to his yellow, the emotionality vs rationality, the heart vs the brain, Gilbert is more like right brain to Chev's left brain. If it makes sense like that xd Their color schemes are harmonious. Not opposite. Almost like how Nokto and Licht's color schemes are harmonious with each others.

(Nokto (Blue + white + gold) vs Licht (Blue + black + gold)) Not to mention that their names clearly are meant to mean light and dark. (Licht: variant for light, Nokto: comes form latin nox or noctis, meaning night = dark) But that is a rambling for another time.) Both their crests are tigers. White and black tiger. Chev's color scheme is White + gold and black. Whereas Gilbert's is Black + gold and white. But then the overall color that game devs use to signal about the characters baffles me a bit. Gold/Yellow vs Black/dark red. They don't seem to have too much connection or that of which comes to my mind quickly and without digging deeper. (because I believe that if you dig deep enough, you have digged yourself into a trap of overthinking about things. (Justifying things because you want to justify them, which I'm not big fan of. And sometimes things don't need meaning and we have to live with that. As much as it pains my overthinker brain.)) But here is my impressions about Gilbert so far. I'm at the point where MC has left the Clavis's party (I loved it btw). Gilbert really does give me toxic INFJ villain feels, but let's not get too hang up on terms such as that. But he is someone who is driven forth by his own ideals and desire to change the world better. He, like Clavis, seems to cloak himself in this idea that he is the villain and is okay, even happy, to take that role. He is the one who, like Chevalier, has thrown away emotional attachment out of the window (or so they say) unlike Clavis who makes his choices based more on emotion rather than rational thinking. Maybe that's why I like Clavis and Gilbert, they push MC out of their black and white thinking. That things are not so easy peezy as "choose a right king and everyone will be happy". There will always be someone who is mad about it. That's why I really loved the scene with Gilbert with the orphaned kids and the Clavis's party. He seems to enjoy the company of children (who are not morally corrupted or tainted) and he really empathically listens to those who are angry. He believes in the idea that "no one remembers what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel". (A quote with debatable origin, people say that it was coined by Maya Angelou. But I really love this quote, because I think it is the truth.) Gilbert isn't trying to rationalize against someone's choices with pure intellect. He uses empathy to guide him to the most rational outcome in that emotional scope. But he also uses this to manipulate people with fear. He uses fear extensively and he does it actively. Where as I feel like Chev just has that aura about him automatically. Hence my next thought: Action vs Stasis!

Gilbert and Clavis are action oriented. They shake the gameboard, they make the first moves. Gilbert probably more than Clavis. They both want change. Is it change for the better, we will see, I still haven't finished Gilbert's route but he really gives me this "I'm willing to become the greatest threat so that people unite to defeat me." or "I will conquer all so there will no longer be wars.". Chev, on the other hand, symbolizes stasis. His goal is to keep the kingdom of Rhodolite going. That's his duty and he is willing to take it. (even tho we can debate if that is something he really really believes in or even thinks about that much. I feel like it is out of obligation rather than of personal ideal. But alas, I have not played Chev's route yet.) Chev is reactive rather than proactive. He waits for the opponent to make the first move and reacts accordingly. (I'm not saying he is not reactive once game is on. More like "if there was not threat to deal with, he wouldn't create one".)

Chev doesn't care what you think about him. Gilbert does. He might seem like he doesn't but he is really there to prove a point. (I will pick up his dislike for lying later >.>) Chev is not. Chev knows that his way is the right way for him and that is enough for him. Chev also actively makes a "gettaway plan" for himself in Clavis. He knows that Clavis is the final thread that keeps him from going overboard because he understand that he has to be blind for "individual people" aspect to be a good ruler. Gilbert probably understands this about himself too, but he is trying to prove a point. So he needs to go overboard. Because masses of people need absolutes to react to. If it is something banal, it won't do. His evil actions need to shake the very foundation of ideas. The people have to face those things head on and see it for themselves. They cannot be sheltered. Gilbert gives me the vibes that he is willing to sacrifice himself not for the kingdom, but for the betterment of all mankind. He is happy to become the villain #1 if that means that other people will rise and take down the corrupted Obsidian or the corrupted idea. I would say that he is Lawful Good going on about things like Lawful Evil.

Gilbert asking questions means that he wants you to think, he wants to challenge your opinions and how you look at the world. Same as Clavis. They yearn for change. They want to change the world. Where as Chev wants to maintain things as they are. Chev "If it is not broken, we don't need to fix it" Michel. Where as Clavis and Gilbert want to improve the system. They are idealistic. Gilbert and lying

This is something very interesting. At first I thought that he was all "I dislike when people lie to me." but he really is "I dislike lying in all its forms." And he does say that he doesn't lie. And I'm starting to believe that is really the case. All the things he says are true. But because how other people see him, they are suspicious anyway. Like MC is. Like we all probably are when we start the route and think "So what is your trauma, baby girl?" When he is unsure or knows that he shouldn't say the thing he really thinks or that is true, he will deflect or give a very vague response. Which makes me quite happy to replay his route at somepoint with this in mind. In conclusion: Welcome to my TED talk, with no head or tail, just me overthinking about things about a otome gacha game. Nokto: Maybe it's the first and last time you'll be popular in your life. Congratulations.

Emma:…..I’m not happy.

(I should have just started my day, but I'm tired.)

Nobleman:….How selfish. Even if that was Prince Chevalier's policy the other day, it's impossible.

Nobleman: Do you intend to repeat the same tragedy like Prince Yves? …..deplorable.

Noblewoman: I never thought that woman who had a private affair with Obsidian would walk around the court with dignity.

Noblewoman: What kind of nerve does it take to fall in love with a man who doesn't know her place?

(I tried to defend myself to various people that this was a misunderstanding. But they didn't believe me at all.)

The thorny emotions only stab me one-sidedly, and they don't listen to me.

I was trapped in an environment that was worse than before, and I was blocked in all directions.

(In the court, there are many people who have a strong dislike of Obsidians than the city...)

(I guess it reflects the princes' way of thinking that "reconciliation is impossible".)

Clavis: Haha, don't look so gloomy. You haven't done anything wrong, have you?

Clavis: It's just right to imitate Lord Gilbert's boldness, laugh refreshingly and pass it off.

Nokto: Yes, yes. Even King highness would say, "So what?"

Nokto: You are the king's direct subordinate, so you should be strong.

Clavis: A rabbit who borrows the authority of a tiger, or a fox?

Nokto: Ahaha, looks tough.

(Even under these circumstances, I see that Prince Nokto and Prince Clavis are still the same.)

I glanced at the large stack of letters on the foreign factor’s office desk.

The letters listed were inquiries about me, and the two seemed to be busy dealing with it.

I'm supposed to be busy with unplanned official duties, but I didn't do anything for him.

(If I hesitate, I'll just make the two of them worry about me….)

Emma:….Thank you. It's true that I'm not guilty, so I have to be dignified about it!

Clavis: Yes, that’s the important part, isn’t it?

Nokto: By the way, this is just an official business. It's not something you should care about.

Clavis: It's rather amusing to see the clear divide between those who are for Obsidian and those who are against it, isn't it?

Clavis: So far, though, it looks like there's a lot of opposition.

Clavis: Obsidian has betrayed Rhodolite once before. It's hard to believe.

Nokto: When I think about it, I wonder which faction King highness is now.

Clavis: He’s a militant. He's not looking to build friendships.

(I see….)

The position of the alliance is the guiding principle of the whole.

If Prince Chevalier does not have the idea of stepping up to Obsidian, then discussions will be extremely difficult.

(......Even if you show friendliness, you’d never know when Obsidian will betray you.)

(A good example is the way Prince Gilbert treats me.)

(I'm sure Prince Chevalier's thinking is rational and solid.)

(Prince Leon would say the same thing about this.)

Even if you understand it, it is difficult to swallow it as long as the shadow of violence flickers.

Clavis: It's not just Chevalier, we're the ones whose position is being questioned right now.

Clavis: Speaking of friendship with Obsidian....the vigorous anti-monarchy faction is likely to invade.

Nokto: But there are anti-monarchy people who think the opposite, right?

Clavis: In their case, "Royalty has made mistakes in judgment before, and we can't trust them to make a second one."

Nokto: I can't believe it got that complicated.

Nokto: ....I mean, was there ever this much distrust of royalty?

(Even though it still tingles and hurts.)

Every time my neck hurts, I think of Prince Gilbert.

It should have been scary and painful, but in the end, the only feeling left in my heart was sadness.

(As long as he is the real thing, it is a dream come true to compromise.)

(I was thinking about having a conversation with Prince Gilbert….but I realized that I can't even do that unless I turn him back into a person.)

Though I always feel deceived by his fresh and gentle smile.

Prince Gilbert is by no means friendly to me or to Rhodolite.

Whether one likes it or not, the idea of "domination" will probably remain the same.

As I unconsciously put strength into my fingers, a hand reaches up behind me and grabs me, pulling me away from my neck.

When I turned around, Cyril, who was standing beside me, shook his head as if he was troubled.

Clavis: Emma, if you're so worried about your neck, the gentle prince will prepare the medicine that works instantly.

Emma: medicine?

Nokto: Despite his looks, he's a professional drug maker who has contributed to numerous medical advances.

Nokto: I don’t know. That’s how I view him.

Clavis: Do I have to tell you twice?

Emma:......I didn't know you were that great.

Clavis: Haha, did you fall in love with me? I'm a guilty man.

Clavis: If things go on like this, I'm afraid Lord Gilbert will become jealous, but...where’s the important guy?

Emma: I don't know. I didn't see him, at least not this morning.

Since we came back together from the hideout, he should be in court.

With the white cloak fluttering gallantly, he walks down the aisle to the altar.

He sat down on the opposite side of the seat without taking a glance at the man ahead of him and let out a languid breath.

Chevalier: it seems that you are the one who often goes to the chapel.

Gilbert: It's so relaxing to be in an empty space, isn't it?

Gilbert: You see, I don't like people. Sometimes I miss the silence.

Chevalier: Disliking people makes me laugh.

Chevalier:.....I thought for sure you were doing some sort of penance.

Gilbert: Unfortunately, I don't have anything to confess.

Chevalier: I suppose.

Chevalier, who snickered, looks up at the statue of the god that sits in the chapel.

Chevalier:....I'm going to ask you straight. What are you going to do with that?

Gilbert: By "that", you mean little rabbit…right?

Gilbert: I'm thinking of getting her while cherishing her.

There was a firm determination in his fresh, carefree smile that this was already a decision.

Gilbert: Because even if she were to finish her role as Belle, she wouldn't be able to return to the city, would she?

Gilbert: There's probably a rumor going around town right now that the daughter in Akatsuki's bookstore is an Obsidian’s woman...

Gilbert: Even the evil of Obsidian will hear rumors and come to meet the little rabbit with various ideas.

Gilbert: I would be jealous if she got along with other people without my knowledge.

His red eye catch Prince Chevalier who soften suddenly.

The conversation breaks off and a sacred silence returns.

After a moment of searching for something, Gilbert's sigh melted into the air.

Gilbert: You should have understood my purpose from the commotion the other day.

Gilbert: And the reason why I came here.

Chevalier:…..Yes.

Gilbert: Okay? I've known you for a long time, so I'll listen to what you have to say.

Chevalier: Hoh? Then…

Chevalier stands up and quietly draws his sword.

After taking a few steps and drawing a beautiful trajectory, it was blocked by a pitch-black cane.

Chevalier: Can I see that cane of yours?

Gilbert: Eh, no. Why would I lend it to you?

Gilbert, who blocked the sword while sitting still laughed out of place.

In contrast, Chevalier carved a wrinkle between his beautiful eyebrows.

Chevalier: At first I thought it might be a made-up sword, but the position of the cut is unnatural for that.

Chevalier: If it were just a sword to begin with, there would be no need to disguise it. It's not forbidden to wear a sword belt.

Chevalier: And it can't possibly be ordinary cane, either. Because, according to the little rabbit, it has an unnatural weight to it.

Gilbert: What do you think? // Can you guess?

Chevalier: 100 years ahead...no, it's the crystallization of technology that's even further ahead, isn't it?

Chevalier: It's a new type of weapon never seen before on any continent, with the potential to overturn the world.

The "disaster of the world" says nothing.

He passes it off with a fresh smile that shows no signs of breaking down.

Chevalier:…The continent will definitely usher in a new era if it is introduced to the battlefield.

Chevalier: The age of knights is over, and the time will come when common people will fight with weapons.

Chevalier: Obsidian's military development was spectacular, but it seems to have far exceeded my expectations.

Gilbert: Hehe...then why do you think I did something that made you find out about it?

Gilbert: Chevalier, you are an uncertainty. Even if we advance our technology 100 years into the future….

Gilbert: It is the one and only existence that can set up an ingenious plan to overturn it.

Gilbert: I value you. I never underestimated you.

Gilbert: What's the point of me giving you all this information so you can guess?

Chevalier:……..

A small click of the tongue echoes in the chapel.

Gilbert: Yes. Because they've already been prepared.

Gilbert: I just realized it was too late. My piece is on the verge of checkmate.

Gilbert: Rhodolite now has its fangs up....no one has noticed it but you.

Chevalier:.....That seems to be the case. But there are concerns.

Gilbert: What is it?

Chevalier: Why wait for a checkmate?

Chevalier: You are ready. Then, execute it promptly.

Chevalier: Why didn’t you do it?

Gilbert:……..

Chevalier: It's a contradiction, isn't it? Especially if you see me as a risk.

Chevalier: The more time I give you, the less chance you have of winning, and you don't fail to understand that.

Gilbert:….Hehe.

Chevalier: I see... apparently there is a purpose that I have not yet read through.

Frozen icy sea eyes look down at the beast.

Chevalier: Your evil is very reasonable and worthy of the name of the "ever-victorious marshal", but.......

Chevalier: Your own actions are wasteful and filled with contradictions.

Chevalier: I know what you do, but I honestly don't understand what you want to do.

Gilbert: You think I’m kind enough to tell you?

Chevalier: I'd love to hear it out....

Gilbert: What's inside the cane....you don't want to see it yet, do you? It's a bad bet for you.

Chevalier: It wouldn't hurt to take that bet, but I might accidentally kill you.

Chevalier: It's troublesome to keep you alive and troublesome kill to you……

Gilbert: I'm the same way. If I kill the prince of Rhodolite, I'll never get out of here alive, you know?

Gilbert: If you're going to kill me—

Chevalier: You have to figure out a way.

The two of them laugh as the air clashes with the deadly atmosphere.

It was a smile that seemed to be deeply amused, as if no one else could understand it.

Gilbert: Hey, I answered a lot of questions for you, so you can at least give me something in return?

Chevalier:….I’ll listen.

Gilbert: It’s about little rabbit——

Silence returned to the chapel once again.

Chevalier's expression after hearing everything was not bright at all.

Chevalier:…..I hate to say this but…..

Chevalier: The woman you like may be the unhappiest person in the world.

Gilbert: Isn't it obvious? I’m the disaster of the world.

Chevalier: That's one thing, but it's not enough...

Gilbert: Like what?

Chevalier:….No, it was a foolish thought.

As if to say that his business is finished, Chevalier stands up briskly and heads for the doorway.

He pushed open the heavy door without difficulty and stepped out into the blowing wind.

Gilbert: Oh, I almost forgot. On a different note, I have one gift for Rhodolite.

With his back turned, Gilbert spun like he was singing.

Gilbert: Look forward to it, okay......?

Jin: I’ll disturb you.

Emma: Huh, Prince Jin?

While I was helping with official duties in the foreign factor’s office, Prince Jin came in with a package of sweets in one hand.

Jin: Oops, you're here too.

Emma: Yes. I was originally scheduled to help out today.....

Jin: It's rare that the bastard isn't here.

Nokto: Jin is the same as always.

Clavis: Haha, that means being with Emma has being taken for granted. // Haha, that means that being with Emma has become the norm.

Emma: …...I have a headache.

Jin: Stretch your wings while you still can. By the way, have you seen Luke?

(......? Prince Jin, I feel like you have less time than usual.)

Emma: I didn't see him.

Clavis: Me too. It's rare for him to participate in public affairs, is it?

Nokto: Well, but I certainly haven't seen him around lately. I did manage to get him to attend the memorial service, though.

Nokto:.....No, wait. Jin, is that honey sweets?

Jin: Yeah, I asked Yves to make this for me a while ago.

Jin: I've been walking around the castle with this, but I can't see him at all.

Clavis: Oh my…!

Nokto:.....It's an abnormal situation.

Emma: What’s the matter?

(Everyone's eye color suddenly changed....)

Clavis: Luke never misses a hint of honey, no matter how far away it is.

Nokto: Whether he’s on official business or eating, as long as he smells honey, he’ll definitely come.

(O-Oh, so he likes honey that much.)

Aside from Prince Jin and Prince Clavis, even Prince Nokoto has a straight face, so it must be true.

Jin:…..Lately, I've had the feeling that he's been acting strangely.

Jin: I was curious and wanted to hear what he had to say….

Clavis: Oh? I didn't notice anything unusual about it…..

Even after getting into the carriage, he seemed to be somewhat lost in thought.

Emma:….Shall I look for Luke, too?

I found myself saying those words.

Jin: But you're having a hard time right now, aren't you?

Clavis: You can't stay in your room just because it's hard.

Clavis: A change of scenery is important. The outside air tastes better when you're depressed, right?

(Prince Clavis….)

Clavis: Cyril, just to be safe, you're coming with me. I mean, you can be Emma’s personal bodyguard from now on.

Cyril: Eh, you don't mind? yay, now I can get away from the troublesome prince for the time being.

Cyril: I'll do my best, so please look forward to it, young lady!

Clavis:……Oi.

(I-I wonder if it's okay that I got the top knight of the foreign faction to escort me...)

(But Cyril looks very happy... I can't say that I'm not afraid of being targeted…..)

Emma: Thank you very much. I will take your words for it…!

Nokto: I think he's the right person for the job. Cyril is a former obsidian soldier, and he knows Gilbert, right?

Emma: Um.

Cyril: I'd say we've known each other, but that was a long time ago.

Cyril: Well, I think I can stand up to Gilbert better than most soldiers.

I'm curious, but right now we should focus more on Luke.

Jin: Sorry, Emma, but we'll have to split up to find him.

Jin: I hope nothing is wrong….

hi!! i love your taste in dramas and i was wondering if you have any more villain romance recs, specifically cdrama recs? i finished lbfad and tiger & rose already and im currently watching twisted fate of love (and LOVING it hehe)

yay i love villain romances!! gonna include villains and villain-lites! my favorites on this list are goodbye my princess and arthdal chronicles for villain main leads and love and redemption, monarch industry, empress ki, extraordinary you, chicago typewriter, and bridal mask/gaksital for villainy second leads!

cdrama: villain is the main lead

the ultimate villain romance for me is goodbye my princess. the male lead is fucking horrendous but compelling and it's a tragedy from start to finish. don't watch if you want healthy relationships, someone changing for the better through the power of love, or a happy ending. do watch if you're in the mood to just get fucked up and see gorgeous costumes and scenery while doing so (also my favorite cdrama ost!). romance of tiger and rose is kind of a romcom parody of this one, too!

the legends is a nice sort of gender flip-- the female lead is basically a hot shit, overpowered demon and the male lead is a gentle guy trying to do bad all on his own because he's full of heart eyes. there's also a secondary antagonist who has a thing for the female lead, so double villainy!

word of honor. i have not finished this one, but one of the male leads def fits this bill!

the rise of phoenixes. not really a villain ML, exactly, but he's very machiavellian and schemey so if you liked the lead in twisted fate of love, you'd DEFINITELY like him (i need to finish this drama!!!)

...till the end of the moon. which i dont think i recommend, but feel compelled to mention. here's the deal: the middle arc, like eps 19-30ish? fucking perfection! the bookends on either side? dont do nearly as much. the end? i dont know her (literally, i didnt bother with the last ep). idk try it out if you're starving for costume villain love trapped in a masochism tango, but....watch some of the other dramas on this list first

cdrama: villainy second lead and/or main antagonist is in love with the lead

love and redemption and dear god you'll need a stress ball

monarch industry/the rebel princess has shades of this

prince of lan ling

kdrama: villain is the main lead

arthdal chronicles has a male lead having a villainous crush on the female lead (and they are VERY ship baity), as well as the second male and female leads both being villains and in love. i love iiiit, but be warned it ends on a cliffhanger and s2 isnt out yet

cheese in the trap. the male lead is not a great dude. a lot of people dont like this drama, but i love it (aside from a weak last ep)

everyone's just a little bit shitty in bloody heart, to include the male lead

the male lead in little women will have you guessing from start to finish if you're a clown for trusting him or not

who the villain is is kind of a rotating door in the series, but the main male lead in moon lovers: scarlet heart ryeo definitely spends time in anti-hero land

que sera sera and when a man's in love/man in love are older dramas with male leads who are definitely Questionable (the former is described as a bastard in the synopsis and the latter is an ex-gangster trying to go legit but not quite able to shake the gangster tendencies). neither story is a traditional romance, and there's a lot of content warnings to be mindful of (lots of slapping and hitting in the former, cheating in the second [and probably some slapping])

depending on your POV (or the point of the story) the main love interest from empress ki could qualify! and then there's a support character who's a straight up villain that's got a crush

i dont want to tell you anything because spoilers! but there's flavors of this with king in love/the king loves

kdrama: villainy second lead and/or primary antagonist is in love with the lead

extraordinary you

mr. sunshine (more anti-hero than villain, but you'll get that flavor with dong mae aka my most intense SLS ever)

dali and the cocky prince

the princess' man

tale of nokdu

chicago typewriter (more villainous crush than full on love line)

bridal mask/gaksital (the male lead also starts out as a villain in this one!)

from now on, showtime! features a villainous crush and i wish the backstory eps were their own drama because i loved them

I really, really, REALLY hope the “disgusting twoleg den” with the “strange animals” is an illegal exotic pet situation and not anti-zoo stuff :(

Yeah to me a singular den as described doesn’t sound like a zoo tbh.

I agree. Obviously there are still really bad zoos around the world, and I know there are a lot in America with these roadside zoos and suchlike (they shouldn’t even be called zoos, just the private collections of selfish cruel narcissists out on display to make money) but real zoos do great conservation work and have good standards for animal care. Even if it would be nicer if the animals were in their natural habitat, a lot of the time that isn’t possible. Obviously there is absolutely a whole massive debate about this whole thing, with many other points including what species should even be in a zoo because of the impacts on their mental health (eg apes and elephants) but my point is that not all zoos deserve to be tarnished with the same affiliation as places like the tiger king guy.

When I first read that blurb I assumed it would either be a private animal collection, a lab, some kind of dodgy exotic pet shop or a holding place for animal smuggling, or even a circus, but circuses aren’t allowed to use wild animals anymore in the UK, that got banned a few years back, so I think that is less likely.

Glass Joe

trichophobia (fear of loose hair) thanatophobia (fear of death) & athazagoraphobia (fear of being forgotten)

His trichophobia is naturally occuring, loose hair just makes his stomach turn, hes a neat freak because of that

His thanatophobia is also really normal, especially for someone who has come close to death many times thanks to him getting wrecked on the daily

His athazagoraphobia is from a sad childhood memory of his, his mom left him on the street as a teenager for a while because he was angry at her for not respecting his boundaries, he ended up almost dying from thirst & has never contacted his mom ever since

Von Kaiser

Glossophobia (fear of public speaking), Atelophobia (fear of imperfection) and Chronophobia (fear of time passing)

His glossophobia is pretty normal since hes socially awkward and crowds scare him a little

His Atelophobia stems from his childhood, he basically lived on academic validation & any sort of praise he got at work

His Chronophobia just...popped up in his head one day, he was trying to sleep when the thought of not being able to take any mistakes he had done back hit him like a train, it effects him really severely, causing him to overthink everything and then get more stressed about the fact that hes wasting time overthinking when he could right all the wrongs he did and it just turns into a loop.

Disco Kid

taphophobia (fear of being buried alive), claustrophobia (fear of tight spaces) and Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)

His taphophobia comes from a nightmare he had as a child, it happened after a funeral too so it hit him hard and he couldnt sleep for a few days.

His claustrophobia is also from his taphophobia, hes just scared of being squashed to death.

His Ophidiophobia started to begin after one of his friends got hospitalized from a snake bite & got severely traumatized from it.

King Hippo

Thalassophobia (fear of drowning), megalophobia (fear of large objects) and Gerascophobia (fear of growing old)

His thalassophobia is mainly caused by all the tales of people he heard drowning back in hippo island if they went too far into the deep end, he knows it would take a lot for him to sink but it still freaks him out

His megalophobia is caused by the time a entire brick wall fell down on him, it was ridiculously tall too so it stuck with him for a eternity and still effects him.

His Gerascophobia came to him when he was with his Father while he was on his death bed, his dad tried to keep him calm as he died by talking about growing old, it didnt work on him, at all.

Piston Hondo

Atychiphobia (the fear of failure/rejection), Mazeophobia (fear of being lost)

His atychiphobia was with him (and still is) for a huge chunk of his life, he loved to talk about the things he had & had "weird" interests, due to this he got bullied and he decided to just stop talking about the things he likes due to that.

His Mazeophobia is pretty recent due to him going hiking with bear hugger & losing him, he was pretty much scared for his life because he didnt wanna die in the woods alone.

Great Tiger

Phasmophobia (fear of ghosts), aichmophobia (fear of sharp things) & pediophobia (fear of dolls)

He grew up with a lot of ghost stories & tons of urban legends so his phasmophobia was with him as soon as he could speak

His aichmophobia comes from a "prank" his "friends" did to him during a sleepover while he was trying to sleep, their bright idea was to tear a hole on the door with an axe to freak him out (how funny, right?), he thought they would break in so he held the door, long story short an axe literally went through his hand and hes out for blood now.

His pediophobia is from a old friend of his who had a lot of dolls & had a HUGE crush on tiger, she once gave him a handmade doll of him and he discovered his & her hair and blood along with teeth in it, anytime he sees a doll he gets nauseous because she left a impact on him. (are you seeing a pattern here?)

Don Flamenco

autophobia (fear of being alone), Entomophobia (fear of insects) and monatophobia (fear of dying alone)

His fear of being alone is getting better suprisingly, it originally stemmed from his dad abandoning him at a beach "to teach him a lesson" for a few hours. (holy fucking shit)

His Entomophobia just popped up one day, hes just naturally repulsed from bugs

And his monatophobia also came from the beach incident since he had a heat stroke along with it.

Bear Hugger

Tomophobia (fear of surgery) and the fear of being crushed to death (i couldnt find a official name for it)

His tomophobia is mostly prominent thanks to his families history with sketchy doctors & surgeries done im the worst way possible, he kept hearing tales of people dying from surgeries and that literally drove him mad

His fear of being crushed to death is mostly obvious when hes chopping down trees, especially tall ones, if it leans his way even a inch he'll change positions to make sure he doesnt become a human pancake™

Aran Ryan

Bathophobia (fear of deep holes), emetophobia (fear of vomitting)

His emetophobia is self explanatory, throwing up just disgusts him & leaves him feeling awful.

His bathophobia is from his teenage years where he fell into a well & proceeded to lie there for days until he got discovered by his dad, he refuses to go near deep holes and will hold onto anyone or anything near him if he has to go near one.

Soda Popinski

Methyphobia (fear of alcohol/getting drunk) & scopophobia (fear of being stared at)

Since he used to be a former alcoholic, his methyphobia becomes really visible at any events that have alcohol, he doesnt wanna go back to those times so he avoids it as much as possible

His scopophobia is from his teenage years where his alcoholism was developing, he kept being judged by people thanks to his alcoholism, whenever he walked into a place he would be known as the "alcoholic" of the room

Bald Bull

Trypanophobia (fear of needles), Hemophobia (fear of blood) Pungophobia (fear of being stabbed)

His Trypanophobia was basically with him all his life, he does his best to hide it away since he thinks its "childish"

His dystychiphobia stems from a car crash he got into when he was 14, nothing really bad happened thankfully but hes still working on not being scared of accidents

His Catagelophobia is very recent & shined bright after his TD match with mac, he didnt go out for a few days after that
