Honestly, I'd kinda like Ben X Mal, if they just let Mal admit to Ben that she drugged him to get the wand, but only a girl can dream.
You and I have very different opinions, anon, because in my opinion the love spell nonsense is only the tip of the iceberg with what I can't stand about the ship.

I finally fell down the "Descendants"-rabbit hole (better late than never) and watched all three movies back to back. Here are my first thoughts that came to mind:
Maybe a controversial opinion, but the third one was the best in my eyes and the first one gets the last place, even though it has many wonderful moments too. (That being said, I deeply dislike the very last scene of the third movie, since even for a Disney-movie, everything seemed to be forgiven way too fast and easily.)
2. Say what you want about the movies, but the actors are very talented and dedicated and the songs are absolute bops that will hold up for a very long time.
3. I have never had more conflicted emotions about any protagonist than I have about Mal (I might make a separate post about it later, but others have explained it better than I could, so... :) ).
4. Evie would've been more fitting ruler, in my opinion.
4. My shipper-heart beats into so many directions, but I can't truly root for Ben and Mal. The way their love story began was shady (beautifully expressed) and they both had better connection and chemistry with so many other characters.
5. Ben was done so dirty multiple times, and I feel like he is very underrated.
6. Speaking of chemistry... Harry Hook seems to be Theo Raeken of the "Descendants"-universe - he has chemistry with literally anyone. A huge part of me loves Huma and wanted them to end up together, but the connection and sparks he, Gil and Jay have going on.. ;) I also wanted to know more about the obvious romantic past between Hook and Mal. (Hook seems to be one of my favorite characters in many fandoms, huh.)
7. The fact that they didn't make Malvie canon is a huge crime (nothing against Doug, though, he is a great guy).
8. Uma and Audrey deserved so much better, to be honest.
9. Carlos is such a wholesome and sweet bean, he deserves the world as well. I would love to have him as a friend. What happened to Cameron was so tragic and unfair, and thinking about it while seeing his radiating presence on screen made me constantly tear up.
10. I never would've thought I'd say this in any circumstance, but Hades is hands down the best villain-parent and I truly hoped to see more of him.
All in all, I liked the movies way more than I thought I would and they make me feel really nostalgic. ...Plus, the songs will surely be stuck in my head for the next couple of weeks.

Mal: I need motivation not to kill Harry today.
Ben: I can't kiss you if you're in prison.
Mal: okay. Phew. That should tide me over for the next half hour or so.
Ben: see you in 30 minutes.
Mal: it’s a date.

Lol I saw that post on Descendants instagram yesterday and I can’t help but cringe.
And they put out another post today about how we can learn from Bal🙄 yeah sure from drugging to straight up lying to Ben to the point where she want to spell his memory but oh ‘she’s trying to fit in’ bullocks. Then you have the simps in the comments section rooting for them..
Bal is one of the worst disney ships in history. They completely failed at the "good boy bad girl" love story. From this (the love spell cookie comment) and other canon events Mal doesnt actually regret her actions and who can blame her?? She gets to control the king who's basically a pet afraid of telling her no and controls all of Auradon. Looking at it like that why is anyone (myself and other anti mal people) surprised she still sucks by the end of it. She hasnt had any actual consequences in all three movies.

Controversial opinion (or just an opinion that’ll make people offended haha):
I don’t like Mal and I don’t ship Bal because Ben can do so much better imo (the simple way of putting it lol).
I do however ship Malvie because they have great chemistry imo and I love wlw ships. Especially best friends falling in love. Though I do think Evie can do better than Mal in terms of gfs haha, this is the only Mal ship I like.

There is sooo many things wrong with this scene
The crowd is just out there gasping like hOw DaRE yOu bring another girl to a special event when you're already taken?!?! NO ITS NOT LIKE HE DID THE SAME THING TO AUDREY IN THE LAST MOVIE AND ALL OF YOU HYPOCRITIC BITCHES JUST STOOD THERE DANCING
Uma has every right to enjoy Mal's misery because that girl was literally her middle school bully and practically ruined her life. Where are we at? Church? Yall telling me you wouldn't like to see your old bully get a payback?
I was about to say Mal was stupid for thinking Ben would be with someone who tried to harm him to get the wand but then I remembered the first movie...
All of Ben's friends are like "how dare you break Mals heart?" "How dare you hurt Mal??" Seriously, that's what you focus on? Core four I can get BUT Lonnie and Doug have known Ben for years- they know what he's like, especially Lonnie, who was one of the people who saved him from getting killed by the same person he's dancing with. Sounds a little odd to you? No? Why the hell are they worrying about Bal drama instead of pulling Ben up and asking him what the hell he's doing?
This scene irks me so much. People on the screen don't know that, but we do- Ben has every right not to want to be with Mal. He doesn't owe her a single thing and every "selfless act of love" she did through the movies could also be seen as her own benefit- but that's another story entirely.

I'm still not over people still forgiving and making excuses for Mal from the first movie. She had her "friends" (moreso minions, if you've read the books then you know full well how she treats them like shit) at her disposal and was undoubtedly groomed into a perfect manipulator or bully, ranging on what Maleficent used on the Isle besides her reputation and name alone to get people to either avoid or appease her and Mal. Why resort to magic? It's apparent that love magic, when forced on someone else, is known as evil. As seen in the third Cinderella movie, A Twist Of Time, when Lady Tremaine spells Prince Charming into loving Cinderella's step-sister Anastasia, instead of Cinderella herself.
Mal never admitted the real reason why she did it. She still wrecked a relationship and poisoned Ben with a love spell, also publicly humiliating Audrey.
And oh no, her mother's victim isn't happy to meet the daughter of her perpetrator, the one responsible from ripping her baby from her life, having her be raised by fae? How dare they not trust Mal, especially after using MAGIC to gain and garter the trust of the girls? Something even Fairy Godmother doesn't use, nor Jane does, especially being her daughter? This led to Mal wanting to steal the wand again.
Let's not forget her also threatening to spell Audrey because of her rightfully being angry that Mal stole her life and lover from her? And the other girls who felt awful for what happened to Mal?
Mal's "motivation" for being good was being in the best position in Auradon. Stealing someone else's life in a high position of power, guaranteed to marry the king and still bullying people and only furthering her own goals.
Mal never apologized or owned up to what she'd done in the book (the whole reason why Descendants even premiered was because of the books!) or to Ben and Audrey.
Mal didn't earn Ben's heart. She stole it. How do we know he isn't still spelled? He has no agency whatsoever.

And the dresses in that mod 🤢 none of them at all fit the time period and I hate how they went through the effort to give the women dresses but put no effort into the men's outfits so they all look like they're attending different events
Also the fact that the dancing couples just kinda float around each other looks bad
I should preface this by saying my opinion is based entirely on the 3.0 and 3.1 versions of the Grand Crystal Ball. I don't know anything about any other versions that may exist.
Like, the closest comparison I can make between the dresses from the Grand Crystal Ball and literally anything else in The Elder Scrolls is the dresses from the Shivering Isles. You know, over two centuries and a realm away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little gaudy? Maybe. But these dresses blend into their environment. The SRM ballgowns don't really do that. (I don't have any screenshots, but if anyone else does, please feel free to share them.) They are Disney Princess dresses, completely out of place in a pseudo-medieval/Viking Age society like Skyrim.
This isn't to say I don't think ballgowns don't exist in Tamriel. I think it's perfectly plausible and altogether probable that culturally appropriate gowns exist. But the SRM ballgowns aren't it,
The men's outfits are just. Okay. They're okay. Nothing is particularly special about them, but nothing is really bad either. Honestly, they look kinda foppish. But yeah, they don't mesh with the saturated Princess Barbie thing the ballgowns have going on. Which . . . is a shame, because I'm sure the artists (not Mara, she didn't put these outfits together) did their best, but their best would look better in a different game.
The only thing I can say about the dancing mechanics is that it's freaking hilarious that the Skyrim Romance Mod requires the Skyrim Sex Lab to allow the LDB and Bishop to twist each other into pretzels, but nothing is done to make the dancing even look dynamic. By Talos, I can't decide if it's haha funny or sad funny.

Who are the biggest victims in Descendants and why you'd think so?
Uma and the isle kids. They had no control over their environment yef have to deal with no only ignorance but also tyranny by Mal's own hand. Second is Ben because the show cannot help itself to spend every moment dunking on his character. Third is Evie Jay and Carlos for being reduced to Mal's minions. Fourth is Audrey bc let's face it she was demonized before she became a literal one.

Poor Baurdey never stood a chance
It really makes me sad that they did all they could to kill this ship before the movies even really started. When I really sit and think about it, to me it’s a little out of character for Ben to sit in a relationship that he’s not happy with, under the impression that he knows the other person feels strongly for him. Now Ben’s a human being, I can see why it was ultimately a good move to have him make said mistake because he was a teenager and he deserved to be able to grow as a character. It’s just that as the years pass, you can tell it was more of a decision to make Bal not look as bad. Because take away all the books and focus strictly on the movies, why were we assuming that Ben and Audrey were in an unhappy relationship? We assumed that because pretty much as soon as it started they were dropping hints that Ben wasn’t interested, he was interested in Mal. Again not taking in the books, we don’t know why they’re together or why they’re still together if he’s not interested and then the rumor flies that they are in an arranged marriage. The death of Baudrey really was just to make sure there was no backlash for Bal. With how they tried to portray them as a dead ship even if Mal wasn’t around the relationship was going to end anyway, was the vibe they were giving off with how hard they were pushing “Ben doesn’t love Audrey, he doesn’t even like her.” On the bright side it makes Baudrey fics all the more interesting because it usually involves Ben re-falling in love with her.

Never mind the fact that there's a difference between a potion and the God damn scepter! Maleficent even said in the first movie 'with that wand and my scepter, I will be able to bend good and evil to my will' and Mal said in the third movie 'there is no spell that can reverse the curse of the scepter' so maybe, maybe, that would include water from the Enchanted Lake?
But no, let's give another reason to hate on Mal! That makes sense!
Yes, thank yooou!! More good evidence
Oh my god, hello?? Also she literally made an antidote to the love potion and Ben ate that -_- Jfc so that's like half a dozen different things working against the stupid little love spell but nah Ben was probably spelled all the way to the alter. Whatever, right??

In a way, Prince Ben is a chad because of him the villain kids got a better life. Or he just deserves more credit than what the narrative tries.
He really is. Shame how his contributions were shoved aside to make him a trophy husband.

Problems with Descendants that aren't talked about enough #1
I already mentioned this in one of my previous posts, but I wanted to dedicate it a bit more attention.
If you watched Audrey's royal return, you probably know she ranted about Bal and everything canonically wrong with that ship. The problem comes when she starts talking about Mal's two attempts at spelling Ben. By the way she says it, it is obvious that at that time, everyone knew about what Mal was doing but no one saw a single problem with it.
If it wasn't true, please explain to me how the hell did Audrey find out about the spelling in the second movie?? First one, maybe ok, she had every right to assume Mal did something to Ben. But she wasn't even in Auradon in the second movie, so how did she find out?? Someone clearly told her later, which meant it spread around because it certainly wouldn't be Ben or Mal. That means most, if not all Auradon knew about what Mal was doing to Ben, that she drugged him, attempted erasing his memories, ran away- which meant opening the barrier and potentially endangering Auradon etc.
The whole kingdom sat back and watched as their sixteen years old king was abused by his girlfriend.
I get it, he's the king, she's a self persevering fire breathing lizard. Ordinary citizens probably couldn't risk it, because we all know what happens when you go against something Mal wants. But what about Ben's friends? Lonnie, Doug, Jane?? If Audrey knew about the spellings, then they had to know too. Even Mal's three minions don't look like people to sit back and watch, but that's exactly what they do. So far Evie was the only one to point out that using spells was wrong.
And what about Ben's parents? Belle, Beast, with all due respect, WHY DID YOU LET THEM GET ENGAGED??? Ben is seventeen at most, which means he's still underage, which means he NEEDS YOUR PERMISSION TO DO THINGS LIKE GET MARRIED. Ben either hid it from them or they didn't care. My money's on the first one. Because Ben is too naive and forgiving to understand why Mal's doing what she's doing.
This should have been addressed more. The fact that the only person who did was instantly turned into a villain is honestly heartbreaking
