It's always so funny to me when people try to make up a title for Elucien, as if SJM didn't already give us titles for all the couples:
Night Triumphant and Stars Eternal
Lord of Bloodshed and Lady Death
Death and the Lovely Fawn
A Bird of Flame and a Lord of Fire
You think SJM just comes up with fancy ship names for funsies? Just to throw us off (where's Feylin's ship name then)? They were having a full blown WAR and she still managed to slip in TWO Elriel key moments. Like come on, open your EYES.
Why are people still trying to push a made up title of "fox and the fawn"? Y'all know foxes eat fawns right? Like your ship name is ... predator and prey....

on my "anti elain/anti elriels are allergic to reading comprehension" tirade; taking the word of nesta (who is literally proven in the same book to be unreliable when it comes to her perspective of elain with her "elain is like a dog" comment that cassian later disproves) on blind faith about how elain would love the spring court or that it was "made for someone like her" simply because it has flowers when, in the first book, we are explicitly told that there is no gardening done in the spring court- which is what elain actually enjoys about flowers, the actual process of gardening and getting her hands dirty. it's like sjm is trying to tell us something about elain and how fundamentally no one in the inner circle (cough, besides azriel, cough) understands her as a person.

Saw a post talking about how el*cien is no different from other ships and that opinions (the characters) can change, which somehow nods to the chances of El*cien being endgame.
They used Nessian, Feysand, Rowaelin, Yrene and chaol, and Bryce and Hunt as examples.
But the differences between these ships and El*cien is painfully clear.
For all of those ships, or at least 4 of the 5 aforementioned that I know, there was an inherent attraction to one another. (I haven’t finished ToG for clarification)
They either thought their future SO’s were exclusively beautiful or had a figurative pull that kept them coming back to one another no matter what.
Nesta combated Cassian.
Feyre combated Rhysand.
Aelin combated Rowan.
Bryce combated Hunt.
(For obvious reasons, I’m excluding Yrene and Chaol but my guess is they may have combated one another too.)
The trend is there.
They all had an initial attraction and still disliked one another. They argued, they bickered, they tested one another and still remained on equal ground.
However, El*cien is different.
Elain does not, from what we know, have any initial attraction to Lucien. She immediately cringed away from him. She avoids him. She loses all of her boldness around him. She makes excuses to leave. She refuses to talk to him unless Feyre or anyone else forces her to.
They don’t bicker. They don’t argue. They don’t test one another. They flee from each other. They don’t have a figurative pull to one another.
In a way, they stifle each other.
Elain is uncomfortable around him.
Lucien is uncomfortable around her.
Discomfort is significantly different from disliking a person. You can hate someone all you want and still have enough mind to argue and stand your ground against that person. Elain doesn’t do that. Lucien doesn’t do that. Hence, obvious discomfort.
They don’t have chemistry like Nessian or Feysand or Rowaelin do.
SJM couldn’t have emphasized that fact enough.
And if someone argues and says “well, she’s saving that for their actual story,” sorry, that’s bull.
SJM has sown the seeds of what’s to come already, and it’s not anything positive regarding El*cien. She’s already told us what we need to know.

Feysand/Nessian/Elriel analysis triangular theory of love
Disclaimer: This is a post, Pro Elriel, AntiElucien/AntiGwynriel
Disclaimer #2: This post is long and written in somewhat technical language if you have any questions you are more than welcome to ask as long as you are kind.
This theory was proposed by the psychologist Robert Sternberg (1986) describes the different elements that make up love, as well as the possible combinations of these elements when forming different types of relationships.
Robert Sternberg is an American psychologist, professor at Yale University, widely recognized for his research, not only has he been interested in love, but intelligence or creativity have also been objects of interest in his research, his contributions in the field of intelligence study are well known and accepted.
For Sternberg, love is made up of 3 qualities that are manifested in any love relationship: intimacy, passion and commitment. These elements, in practice, are intermingled with each other, but knowing how to distinguish them in a theoretical framework helps us to understand the phenomenon of love and to better recognize its nuances and details.
Intimacy: Intimacy refers to the feeling of closeness, the bond between the two people who are part of the love story, the trust between them, friendship and affection. Passion: This component is the emotion or energy of the relationship. Feeling of physical attraction and wanting or needing to be with the other person and be sexually intimate. Commitment: It refers to the decision and willingness to maintain the relationship, together with the feeling of responsibility.
Tumblr media
The possible combinations or types of love According to the possible combinations, Sternberg affirms that there are different ways of loving.
These ways of loving can be heard in isolation or as stages:
Liking/friendship Affection refers to true friendship. There is only intimacy, but there is no passion or commitment. Members of the relationship feel close and trust each other, but there is no desire for intimacy or commitment as a couple.
Infatuated love In this way of loving there is a lot of passion, however, there is neither intimacy nor commitment, which makes this type of relationship superficial. It would be a kind of romance but ending soon or the beginning of a relationship, where there is a lot of desire to be intimate but not enough trust and commitment.
Empty love There is the commitment to be together, but the passion and intimacy have died. They do not feel anything for each other, but there is a feeling of respect and reciprocity. In arranged marriages, relationships often begin with empty love, It also usually manifests itself in long-term relationships.
Romantic love Romantic love is a way of loving in which the members of the relationship feel attraction and excitement, and also have trust and closeness. If this stage continues with great experiences together, it will end up provoking commitment.
Companionate love It usually occurs in long-term relationships. There is intimacy and commitment, but no passion. It is the type of love that can manifest itself when the couple lacks desire and excitement towards the other person, but living together, children and experiences together keep them together. This relationship may seem satisfying to the members and last a long time.
Fatuous love In fatuous love, passion and commitment predominate, but there is no intimacy. Fatuous love can occur because the members of the couple want to be together, since there is a desire and excitement to live intimate experiences, however, they do not have much in common.
Consummate love This is complete love. It is made up of the three elements of Sternberg's pyramid theory. Consummated love is the main love archetype, it is the ideal love and is also called mature love.
With an author like SJM it should come as no surprise that in fact most of his romantic partners always end in consummate love, all going through different stages but ending up the same with all three components present in their relationship.
Let's start by looking at the evolution of Feysand.
Liking/friendship: This relationship began with intimacy that led them to understand each other and have moments of empathy and acceptance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Romantic Love:Feyre and Rhys begin to have moments of sexual attraction but these are accompanied by affection and mutual appreciation, they understand each other they have affection and security (Intimacy + passion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Consummate love Feyre accepts Rhysand and they decide to commit to their relationship, we saw how they went from understanding each other to understanding and accepting, they also have sexual chemistry and intimate desires with each other and finally there is an acceptance of being a couple and building a relationship. (Intimacy + Passion + Commitment )
Tumblr media
Let's see the romantic evolution of Nessian
Infatuated love:  Nesian there is first a lot of desire to have intimate relationships but there is not enough trust or commitment. (Passion)
Tumblr media
Romantic Love: We can see how Cassian and Nesta's relationship evolved to the point of understanding each other, appreciating each other's presence and what Cassian can bring to Nesta and vice versa (Passion + Intimacy )
Tumblr media
Consummate Love: We know how difficult it was for Nesta to let go of control and committing to a relationship requires giving a bit of control to the partner, we see how Nesta evolved to feel good about commitment. (Passion + Intimacy + Commitment)
Tumblr media
Let's see the evolution of Elriel
Liking/friendship: We see how Elain and Azriel's relationship in a certain way always remained on pleasant terms since they met, they felt comfortable enough to question each other as the books progress we see how little by little their relationship grows to understand each other enough to notice specific details in the other and enjoy mutual company (intimacy)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Romantic love: is a way of loving in which the members of the relationship feel attraction and excitement, and, in addition, they have trust and closeness, they can often understand each other without words since they know, perceive and notice each other so much that they discover what they think, there is a physical attraction on the part of BOTH ELAIN AND AZRIEL and an emotional attraction.
He needed to know what the skin of her neck tasted like. What those perfect lips tasted like. Her breasts. Her sex. He needed her coming on his tongue-
Azriel’s cock strained behind his pants, aching so fiercely that he could hardly think. He prayed she didn’t peer down. Prayed she didn’t understand the shift in his scent.
“Yes,” he said, his thumb sweeping in long strokes along the side of her throat.
Her arousal drifted up to him, and his eyes nearly rolled back in his head at the sweet scent. He’d beg on his knees for a chance to taste it. But Azriel just stroked her neck again.
For Sarah's favorite archetype Elain and Azriel need to have the commitment factor, we know that will be the plot of the Elriel book.
Now let's see where Elucien would fit into these categories.
Empty love: We see on several occasions how the only thing that unites Elain and Lucien is a bond mate with which they both feel uncomfortable so they are currently in "this kind of love"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this relationship there is no "intimacy" they do not understand each other, they do not know each other, they do not enjoy each other's company, we have not seen signs that they desire each other sexually other than those of the bond when we enter Lucien's mind
Could a relationship like this be the key for intimacy and passion to grow? YES AND NO, intimacy could develop but it would be a product of commitment, not mutual trust and passion could occur but the same would happen, it would be a product of the need to commitment. A small reminder this type of relationship is the most unsatisfactory for those involved.
Let's see where Gwynriel falls into this category.
Well, actually, Gwynriel is in a very special type. Sternberg introduces non-love, which is when none of the three components of love are present in a relationship.
There will be people who argue that Azriel and Gwyn are friends but that is not true. Azriel does not think of Gwyn as a friend, also in his conversation he wanted to avoid her and it seems that he stayed alone so as not to seem rude.
How are the books right now that is the romantic relationship that couples have based on this theory.
This post was written thanks to my bestie @nitecourtfairytail I talked to her for hours before I dared to make a post, we also spent until dawn trying to find NESSIAN's first romantic moment haha Thanks friend ❤️
Here you can check the information: Sternberg, R. J. (1986). A triangular theory of love. Psychological review

Woke up today to see so many assholes in your inbox. I'm so sorry you have to put up with their bullshit! They know you don't support e*riel and v*ssien and they still have the NERVES to spit bile at you when you're one of the most popular pro elucien blogs on tumblr. Honestly, they have no respect, if they really wanted to have a conversation, they would at least come off anon, but they simply lack the balls I guess 😃. It's probably to avoid the backslash because you have many followers, but they think it's ok to harrass you and send other antielucien minions at your blog and say your response is rude? They really need a selfcheck.
Thank you for messaging me ❤️
Could the anon have wanted to have a real discussion? Maybe.....
But the approach was EXACTLY the same as other anons or anti's that we've all come across who just want to fight with us under the guise of not really caring about ships at all (though they have paragraph after paragraph of knowing quite a bit about a specific ship that it's clear they want to happen). Under the guise of being ok with us only to find out they actually hate us and have hate stalked our blog.
It's not that I don't expect to get hate anons, because I realize we all will as long as we have our Asks open. It's the underhanded way they go about it that angers me. And it wasn't even about me so much as my being exhausted over the whole thing considering our mutuals just said they've dealt with some of the exact same stuff on other Platforms (i.e. new to the fandom and genuinely curious but how does anyone ship Gwynriel?) and I just feel tired over others trying to make us feel we're not allowed to freely and loudly ship Elucien / Gwynriel as much as the E/riels ship E/riel. They say shitty things about Lucien and Gwyn in every forum they can, they harass people that don't agree, they sneak into asks pretending to be friends at first, and so on. And I swear that I do NOT go searching for these E/riel blogs, which goes to show you how incredibly wide spread their harassment is. Their behavior and arguments are unavoidable.
If we're not vocal about our ship, they accuse us of not actually liking our ship all that much. When we start getting vocal they try to beat you down into submission so you stay quiet. They claim Gwyn is a liar and Lucien an abuser then they act affronted when I dedicate time to proving why Az and Elain aren't a match 😒And my blog has a lot of Anti E/riel posts but I don't see what's wrong with that. They try to push the Vassa / Lucien narrative hard so it frees Elain up for Az, they create Lucien slander to prove why he couldn't end up with Elain, how is my pointing out the incompatibility of two characters wrong? Pointing out how Azriel's treatment of Elain is wrong?
It's not but they need to make us feel bad for the content we create so they're free to continue their Gwyn / Lucien slander and push their E/riel agenda without others having valid counterarguments. Then claim WE'RE the ones who have a responsibility to followers and we're not doing it right because we're spreading the wrong interpretation of the text.
It is absolutely absurd and I, with much shame, lost my shit 😂
But I really love you guys for reaching out to me, I wasn't expecting it because I know it's annoying to have drama filling up your news feed. ❤️

feysand in acowar: “You said your mother and father were wrong for each other; Tamlin said his own parents were wrong for each other.” I peeled off my dressing robe. “So it can’t be a perfect system”
“And sometimes, yes—the bond picks poorly. Sometimes, the bond is nothing more than some … preordained guesswork at who will provide the strongest offspring. At its basest level, it’s perhaps only that. Some natural function, not an indication of true, paired souls.”
“Many mated pairs will try to make it work, believing the Cauldron selected them for a reason. Only years later will they realize that perhaps the pairing was not ideal in spirit.”
azriel in acosf bonus chapter: “What if the cauldron was wrong?”
anti elriels: WHY would azriel say something completely random and entitled like that? elriel stans are so delusional he was just talking out of his ass because THE CAULDRON IS NEVER WRONG! 😡 then we should start questioning all mated couples!
elriels: feyre was questioning the cauldron just by looking at elriel and comparing azriel to lucien. she has a whole conversation with rhys in which he answers the cauldron can be wrong (see quotes above) is it really delusional for elriels and azriel to actually question the cauldron when elain has feelings for someone who is not her mate and azriel knows that? is it really weird when that scene is a direct parallel to acowar and both involve elriel & elucien Again? maybe if the narrator questions something you should start questioning it too.
anti elriels: *acting like that acowar scene doesn’t exist and continue acting like the cauldron is a perfect matching system*

I know that the “I can hear your heart beating through the stone” comment is a very heavily debated topic right now, and I don’t want to fan the fire, but I noticed this and I can’t NOT share.
Here is the quote in question:
She looked away—toward the windows. “I can hear your heart,” she said quietly.
He wasn’t sure how to respond, so he said nothing, and drained his tea, even as it burned his mouth.
“When I sleep,” she murmured, “I can hear your heart beating through the stone.” She angled her head, as if the city view held some answer. “Can you hear mine?”
He wasn’t sure if she truly meant to address him, but he said, “No, lady. I cannot.”
There is a lot to point out about this scene, and it’s possible significance, but I’m only going to focus on the bolded parts.
Before I explain, I need to throw in another quote. This is from later on in ACOWAR, a scene that I nearly cry just rereading for this🥲:
That thing that rose and fell with each breath. That echoed each heartbeat.
The mating bond.
It wasn’t there. It was gone.
Because his own chest ... it was not moving.
And Rhys was dead.
These quotes point out something interesting to me.
Elain’s visions were often confusing and odd. It’s why they thought she was crazy. The ravens turning out to be two Hybern soldiers is the most notable example of this. I don’t necessarily think this was a vision (though since she added it’s when she sleeps, it’s totally plausible as well), but her mind was a very jumbled place at the time because of the visions, so she may not be thinking straight—most likely isn’t, actually—and could have also meant it as more than what is actively stated.
I believe she may have actually been referencing the mating bond in this scene, NOT Lucien (or anyone’s) actual heartbeat. Just as Feyre describes the mating bond to echo each heartbeat, Elain may have mistaken it to be such, or she may have known it was the mating bond—which is why she asks Lucien this question.
However, Lucien’s response is rather telling. He didn’t lie to her—we were in his head at the time, and Feyre would’ve noticed if he was lying. He meant it. He does not feel a heartbeat—nor anything similar enough to have caught her meaning. Which is odd, considering that Feyre only didn’t feel it after Rhysand had died. (You could argue it’s because Lucien and Elain haven’t accepted the bond, but in this context, it would be ignoring the fact that Elain was hearing it but Lucien wasn’t despite both of them having felt and been aware of the bond).
So my theory for this is that the heartbeat she is hearing is a mating bond to someone else—her true mating bond, to Azriel, while the one to Lucien is more likely a spell from the Cauldron. Not real. That could be a stretch, but with the mate behavior Azriel has exhibited (others have done a post on this, and I can too if people want to see it!) I don’t think it’s unlikely.
This is just a random thing I noticed, and completely my own interpretation! This scene is definitely a very interesting one, so it makes a lot of sense that it’s such a heavily debated topic, and it could have many hidden meanings. We don’t know what the true one is until SJM herself confirms it.

Something that I see overlooked in the discussion of shipping in fandom and how fandom allows you to explore things you wouldn't be able to otherwise/ship things that are unhealthy is how: yes, fandom and fiction are safe spaces to do these things. However, not everyone is going to be comfortable that you do. It is true that fiction isn't real, however, people can not like things because of how real world experiences and the like are associates with them.
For instance: E/ucien. I see a lot of E/uciens get upset that people who don't like E/ucien "shame them" and "make them feel bad about shipping it" because of how their qualms with the ship relate to real world problems. Such as, how Elain's discomfort and disinterest is constantly brushed off, not just by fans, but also in canon with Feyre inviting Lucien around and telling Elain to give him a chance, and how Elain tells her he isn't entitled to her time and affection. How real world misogyny gets reflected in Elain's wants and desires getting pushed aside, in how fandom treats this soft, feminine character who is not a warrior. How yet again, it feels like a woman is being treated like what she wants doesn't matter, her own choices and desires don't matter, what matters is that they are mated and Lucien wants the bond, so she needs to get over it.
And listen. Like I said, there is nothing wrong with shipping E/ucien, if that's what floats your boat. However, people bringing up the reasons why they don't like the ship or why it makes them uncomfortable isn't making shipping about social justice issues - it is relaying the reasons why people find it icky because of the issues they see in it. That is what people do. You can just not like a ship or a character because it's just not your thing. Sometimes, there's more to it than that. And people bringing up those reasons and saying that they can't see why anyone would ship it is because of how those things make them that uncomfortable. And yes, sometimes, people can't set aside how they see real world issues in a ship or a character, which does make them uncomfortable around those who can, because they are that icky to them.
It is important to recognize that, the same way it is important to recognize that fictional and reality can be separate.
Fandom and fiction are spaces where you can ship whatever and write and explore whatever. It's one of the best things about it. These two characters have never met? Doesn't stop me from thinking they would be fantastic together. This couple would be so unhealthy in real life, but doesn't mean they aren't damn fun to read about.
But they are also spaces where you curate a safe space. What someone is okay with, another person won't be, at all. And sometimes, that means they won't be okay with YOU either, because you can overlook this thing they hate or because you don't see a problem there at all. And that is something that everyone has to make their peace with. There is room for all of these things to be true. It isn't an either or - that isn't how society or people work.
Like, I can see why people like E/ucien. I saw the potential before ACOWAR and Elain made it clear how she wants nothing to do with him, and how that has only gotten more prominent in each following book. Like, sure, maybe if her issue was just that she is uncomfy with the bond itself, and how once she grows to accept this new body and new world, and maybe she and Lucien start tentatively bonding.
I also get why people don't like Elriel. Lord knows, I hate Maas men, lol. I don't like Lucien, I never did, and I can never forgive him for trying to get Feyre to go back to Tamlin, even though I understand why he did it and that he is growing as a character. I don't like Azriel either, not with the Mor situation, I never shipped him and Mor even before ACOWAR, because it was clear to me she was not comfortable around him.
So, I get why people hate Elriel, I do. But I like Elriel because to me, the way he acts around Elain shows care, especially in the Maas way. And most importantly: Elain wants him. She gave him offer and permission. If she didn't want him, I'd be like fuck this guy. If she was mated to him and didn't want it, I'd be like fuck this guy. If she wanted Lucien and hadn't expressed such discomfort around him, I would ship E/ucien.
I read Maas books for the female leads first and whatever ship they end up in second. I looooove Aelin, but I didn't like anyone she was with. I liked Feyre through the whole series, but I only liked Rhys in ACOMAF. I hated Cassian and how he thought about Nesta in Wings And Embers and ACOFAS, but I ended up loving him in ACOSF - the only Maas male I can say that about. So, I ship Elriel because Elain wants him and I'm seeing him grow and change, not because I actually like Azriel, although I know plenty of Elriels do - which there is nothing wrong with! It just is one of those personal preference things.
Like, I can overlook my dislike of Azriel because I like his dynamic with Elain and I love Elain and Elain wants him. I can't overlook my dislike of Lucien because E/ucien makes me EXTREMELY uncomfortable, in so many ways. And when I see people not seeing the issues with that ship I do, it does make me uncomfortable with them. So, I just block, so I don't have to see anything about that ship.
And that is fine - being uncomfy with a ship, being uncomfortable that people ship a ship you find such issues with. What isn't fine is when people go attacking people for not shipping what they do or not recognizing fandom spaces. Similarly, it isn't fine to diss on people for talking about the reasons why they are uncomfortable with a ship or a character. If it makes you uncomfortable to see people talk about real world issues in relation to a ship you like, sit with that and analyse why that is, especially if you do the same with other ships and characters. It would be very hypocritical to complain about people talking about real world issues and how they tie into fiction when you do the same, even if you personally don't see those issues, because everyone has different experiences and viewpoints.
What matters is that people are respectful. In the ACOTAR fandom especially, it is a HUGE problem with people starting drama and attacking people just because they don't ship the same thing or like the same characters. It is one thing to ask a genuine question about why someone ships something you don't, it's another to attack them for it. It's one thing to disagree with someone's view, it's another to call them stupid for thinking it and get snippy whenever anyone doesn't agree with everything you say. It's one thing to not like a ship, it's another to assume that everyone who ships it is bad, either because of your personal qualms with it or because you had a bad experience with some people who ship that ship.
There is just so much bad faith in fandom spaces, and so many people trying to hold the high ground in all these different ways, like with degrees and whatnot. Fandom is supposed to be fun. There are very loud bad seeds that can ruin it. Assuming that fiction = reality will also ruin it, the same as ignoring that seeing reality reflected in fiction and how that can affect people's views and experiences with that fiction will. There is no "one size fits all" approach to fandom. Multiple things can be true at once.
What matters is that people are kind and respectful about it. If you don't like something, don't mock people who do like it or attack them or whatever. When people start attacking people or saying they can't talk about the reasons why they don't like something, like has happened an insane amount since ACOSF, so much so artists get bullied away from the fandom and people are legit getting threats, that's a big, big problem.

Quick Lesson in Reading Comprehension:
For example if we take this snippet, pulled from the Azriel POV bonus chapter where it says:
Tumblr media
What the text says: Azriel is fantasizing about Elain. He is attracted to her. He wants her, desperately.
What the text does NOT say: Azriel felt only lust for Elain. He only wants sex from her.
What does this mean?
There has been a lot of debate about people being upset that they are being told their interpretations of the text are wrong. To this, I just want to point out that there is a difference between interpretations and what the text actually says
Interpretations are subjective. They are based on what you personally think after reading the text. Interpretations could be correct, of course. But they are not always 100% based on fact, they are based on feelings.
What the text actually says is fact determined by the author. This is not debatable, it is in the book. This is objective. It is canon.
If this fandom would stop distorting canon with their own interpretations of the text, we wouldn't have this crazy ship war. If people quit getting their self-inserts and feelings mixed up with what is actually written in the text, there would be wayyyy less arguments in this fandom. But alas.

y'all have NO reading comprehension... why would sjm,... who spent like 5000000 books describing true endgame mated pairs (feysand, nessian, rowaelin, quinthalar) as being so natural and magnetic and irresistible that they cannot stay away from or keep their hands off each other... have elain be so obviously and painfully uncomfortable around l*cien and REPEATEDLY bring it up multiple times throughout the books if she meant for them to be endgame. riddle me that. be so serious right now

Elain's book is going to be all about her own choices.
Whether she chooses to accept, reject, or do nothing about her existing bond with Lucien is up to her.
Unfortunately, the way SJM has set it up since ACOWAR has shown that Elain does not regard Lucien in a positive light. She shrinks away from him, they avoid each other, etc.
That is the only reason I don't ship Elucien. If SJM had written a single positive interaction between them (out of Elain's own will, not out of pressure from Feyre or reluctant politeness), then I would ship them together.
But she has gone out of her way to show how the bond makes Elain uncomfortable and she doesn't want Lucien. SJM even goes as far as to bring in another love interest (Azriel) to show just how much Elain does not desire her fated mate, she desires someone else.
It doesn't matter if Lucien "is a good male". It doesn't matter if he's being a gentleman and giving her space. It doesn't matter if he's the high king of prythian or gives her 40000 solstice gifts she won't ever touch.
She. Does. Not. Want. Him.
That's the only reason you need to stop shipping Elucien.
Any further analysis, any 80 page ppts how much Lucien shows mate behavior and how much he thinks Elain is beautiful and how he is devoted to her... do not matter.
She. Does. Not. Want. Him.
"But don't you want Elain to be happy? The mating bond is the epitome of love. She should want him"
She. Does. Not. Want. Him
"But Lucien is hot/a courtier/a future high lord/sunshine and he's already been through so much rejection in life"
She. Does. Not. Want. Him
End of story.
She doesn't owe him anything. Why is that so hard to understand?

I'm gonna need the ACOTAR fandom to be so fcking for real right now. Which of these is a better story?
A) An uncomfortable/awkward indifference between two people that have been declared mates already, turns into love. Join Elain & Lucien as they grow...and heal...together...and end up together to the surprise of absolutely no one. Elain, again, bends to the will of others and makes a choice that makes everyone else happy. She leaves her sisters, and moves into the human lands or day/spring/autumn/anywhere but Night court with Lucien for her happily ever after.
B) A priestess who is afraid around men due to her traumatic past ventures out to start her healing journey by learning self defense in order to never be weak again – only to fall for her training instructor. They fall in love through training, where the instructor is very careful and respectful of her and all the other women he trains. The training instructor is known as a freak in bed, and she is suddenly all healed to go have kinky sex with him. Follow their journey of fighting, and fucking, and bantering, and fucking some more as they fight and banter. There are ribbons and friendship bracelets. And a pegasus shows up.
C) A woman who everyone underestimates and makes decisions for finally gets to make her own choice. Fate has given her a partner she does not want, who makes her uncomfortable. An iron crockpot has stripped her of her mortality and forced her into a life she did not choose for herself.
Yet, this woman, this female, is so lovely and good that she finds the best in things, despite the circumstances. She adapts to her new life, her new world. She makes friends, she tries to bridge the gap between her relationship with her sisters. In the process of acclimating to her new life, she starts to have feelings for someone else.
A quiet male, the first to truly see her for who she is. The first to talk to her like a real person, the first to hand her a powerful weapon, the first to discover her powers and free her from her depressive murky realm. The male seems to want her too, but is careful around her because she already has a mate. Yet, he cannot seem to stay away from her. One night, under the cover of the night, they meet and are about to share a kiss when something pulls him away. He says "This is a mistake" and she is hurt - Was she imagining all the secret touches? The shy glances? The time they spent together?
She doesn't know that he was physically ordered away from her. The High Lord of their court ordered the male to stay away from her, claimed that she is already spoken for. The male immediately argues, says, "You can't order me to do that". But after some more angry threats, he relents. His own brother basically affirmed the fact that he does not deserve a female as lovely as her. He is tortured endlessly of how he could love someone so much, and yet, fate gave her to someone else?
Then their journey officially begins in the next book. Fate once again, brings the two secret lovers together. Circumstances demand Elain train her powers, and who better to do that than the Spymaster himself? He is the only person (other than Amren, perhaps) with the type of skills (Seeing/Hearing/Spying without physically being there) to be able to understand how to build her powers. They train together, are forced to interact and finally they make up. They cannot stay away from each other, but they have been expressly forbidden to be together. So they sneak away to the garden, under the covers of the stars, when not even the shadows are awake to witness the two lovers find peace in one another. Their love, their bond grows stronger - until Azriel can't physically stay away from her and he finally tells her his suspicions - that they also share a bond. Once it snaps into place, Elain, sweet lovely Elain, understands she has been given not one bond, but two bonds. The cauldron loved her so much, it wanted her to have the choice of whom to love. Elain, after understanding this, decides they've hidden their love long enough. She accepts the bond with Azriel, making her choice forever. They live happily ever after, raising their kids alongside her sisters and their mates.
Idk you guys, clearly I have a bias, but I'm going for option C 🤭

Listen, if someone can just tell me why/how Azriel knows that Cassian would feel it if Nesta was dead, I'll shut up forever.
Tumblr media
I'm definitely willing to accept that this is another literary, figurative way to just say "Oh, you'll know in your heart if she's alive or not."
But this is magic fae world with mating bonds that can be felt. With love, attraction, lust, anger, sorrow, all emotion basically being able to be felt through the mating bond between a pair.
So I ask again - how does Azriel know? He taps Cassian's chest and says, "Right here–you'd know, Cass."
Like?? Hello?? How does he have the exact coordinates to this feeling?? What is giving him GPS powers??
Could it be-perhaps-that he knows because he has felt it before?
But when could he have felt such a feeling, if he does not have a mate? How?
It's haunting me, truly. I'm sitting here trying to think how this man would know what that feels like, and I've come to two conclusions:
Maybe Mor is his mate, and he felt that same feeling of emptiness in his chest when she was left beaten/with nails in her stomach from her failed betrothal to Eris. It was a traumatic moment for her, and Azriel has always been ready to defend her honor.
But this situation still doesn't make sense. If they were mates, how is he able to move on from Mor after 500 years? Cassian notes Azriel seemed to have moved on in ACOSF. Mor seems to be perfectly fine and well, so it's not like she has been in any danger since that would imply that's the reason why Azriel knows what a mating bond going silent feels like
OR, and in my opinion, the far more likely theory:
When Elain went into the Cauldron, Azriel was shot by a faebane arrow. Or whatever poison it was that snuffs out all magic, including the bond. He was basically dead to the world. Maybe there was some kind of bond that was supposed to snap between them, and so when Elain went into the Cauldron, it assigned her to a different male, after presuming Azriel as dead.
Maybe that dormant bond still lingered, even when Elain was taken by Hybern. When they put those chains on her, that also snuffed out all magic. Maybe that's when Azriel noticed he couldn't feel Elain anymore. Maybe that's why he was so, so desperate to get her back. To get those chains off her, even though his wings were shredded. Maybe that's how he knows what that emptiness in your chest feels like when you lose your mate.
What is very interesting about the Hybern/Elain's chains situation is that she was still mated to Lucien during that. And yet, Lucien did not magically arrive at their camp (he knows where they were, he arrived like the next day smh), and declare he was going to get her back. He can winnow. He can sense the bond, that thread between him and Elain. Where was he, when he got that emptiness in his chest? When he presumably sensed his mate was gone? He did not act like Cassian when Nesta got taken for the BR. He did not go insane, demanding he needs her back. He did not even attempt to send word or check in with Feyre/Rhys. No, that was all Azriel.
And please do not reply to this with "Oh, well how do you know he didn't do any of that?" um. because if SJM did not mention it on the page, why should I consider that a possibility at this given time? She has no reason to not mention that. In fact, if she were going for Elucien, it would have been a great way to show Elain the perks of the mating bond and have her become more accepting of it, but Lucien was. not. there.
Those are the only two times we've seen Azriel lose his cool. When it's situations around Mor's honor, and now situations with Elain. Not going to even bother commenting on Gw*n, as Azriel has not shown any reaction to her despite being around her every day in ACOSF and barely acting phased and going to save Eris instead when the girls were taken to the BR. Like, completely wrong redhead, my dude.
Personally, I would like it more if Elriel weren't actually mates, and still chose each other. But this whole mating bond thing with Lucien/Elain/Azriel is so suspicious to me. I need some answers Sarah!!

“If elain rejects the bond or the bond is broken/they will feel it forever” “ if elriel gets together, their hearts will never fully belong to each other, their souls will always belong to their mates”
Y’all acting like they didn’t just have a giant war in ACOWAR and thousands of people died, including people with mates. Has Prythian been burned to the ground because of people without their mates suddenly going crazy? No. Seems fine. They seem able to control themselves.
What makes you think Lucien won’t be able to control himself if the bond is rejected? Sure it might not be ideal, but their pairing is so incompatible and I don’t know how many times SJM has to say it explicitly or show us that.
Sometimes the bond chooses poorly. It’s easier for females to ignore. It can drive the males mad. That’s ALL we know about rejecting bonds.
You’re telling me, Lucien, son of Spell-Cleaver Helion, cannot control himself enough to recover from a bond with a woman he didn’t even want in the first place?
“They’ll feel it forever” who said that?? Where? Yes there is a sense of loss, when the bond is gone… but so is normal death? What makes this so different?
Maybe it’s because I am a human person, but I don’t understand a mating bond unless that couple is in love. Then only does it make sense that the rest of their lives are haunted by a missing mate.
“It’s a biological, innate thing-“ ok. and?
The point is, we wouldn’t even be having this argument if Elucien was actually interested in each other. They are already mates, they could’ve been head over heels for each other from the moment Elain got yeeted from the cauldron. But they did not. They avoided each other, were uncomfortable around each other for the next 3 books.
Don’t you think both Elain and Lucien would prefer a life with someone they truly loved over just some insignificant tie to each other? Are you really telling me if we somehow put Jessaminda and Elain side by side, Lucien would still pick Elain because she’s “his mate” 🤡
“The mating bond is sacred” “the mating bond is above all” “the mating bond is eternal” yeah I don’t care?
Elucien is proof that a mating bond … IS NOT ENOUGH. You need LOVE to have a love story, it’s Romantasy people, wake tf up!!
I don’t want to read a story about a couple in an arranged marriage that don’t want to even be in the same room. I want to read a story about a couple in love. I’ll say it again…A mating bond means nothing without love.
But again, I thought it was obvious 🤷🏻‍♀️

The ACOTAR fandom's Goldilocks Syndrome
Elain is Spring, so ofc that would mean Lucien and her are endgame 🙄
But not too much spring because then Tamlin & Elain could be endgame
Elain needs sunshine, so ofc that would mean Lucien 🙄 (even though his symbolism is flames)
But she needs strictly sunshine NOT the sun, because the only character with sun imagery is Helion himself.
Elain wants to travel and see the world, so ofc she would end up with Lucien 🙄
But nobody else is allowed to show Elain the world, *cough* Azriel you better stay in your lane.
Elain will wed for love and beauty, and obviously she loves Lucien and he's hot so they're endgame
"But Azriel is constantly described as handsome and beautiful and pretty by everyone-" No. Only Lucien is allowed to be hot.
Elain needs to have a choice, so obviously she will choose what everyone wants her to do and be with Lucien.
"Well, Elain could also choose to reject the bond-" No, sorry. That's not a choice that's available for her.
Elain will choose Lucien because he has suffered so much and he deserves it.
Elain has also suffered, she should have the freedom of choice - No, actually, she hasn't suffered as much as poor precious baby Lulu.
Elain is secretly in love with Lucien that's why she avoids him.
If she's in love with him already then why does she need a book - <summoning that one Elucien troller who posts those screenshots of SJM's facebook comment from 2015>
Come on now. I get half the fandom cant grasp canon but maybe they can grasp their own hypocrisy 🤷🏻‍♀️
