Harlequin jewellery were popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras. The name was used for colourful pieces set with gems in an array of different colours making for playful and fun jewellery. Like this pretty Georgian era brooch, set with sapphires, emeralds, amethysts garnets, pastes, chrysoberyl and a conch pearl. Luxorious and cheerful at the same time.

Roaring Twenties - dripping with rubies and diamonds. This chandelier-shaped pendant, which is quite as decadent as the era it hails from, is modeled in 14-carat yellow gold and silver with millegrain borders. It boasts approximately 5.50 ctw of old-cut diamonds, with additional rose-cut diamond accents; and finally, 7 round, faceted rubies, likely Burmese, 2.5 ctw.
Hallmarked for Vienna, ca 1920s. Maker’s mark J-M. Measures 9 cm long, with a weight of 14.4 grams.

The resolution isn't the best, but to the left is my ear, wearing my favourite pair of antique earrings, and to the left that of a lady of the early 18th century wearing earrings of a very similar design.
I was quite surprised to happen across earrings very much like mine in a painting, despite having seen photos of other currently extant pairs that look very similar online.
Perhaps it is the fact that she selected these exact earrings to be represented in her portrait, similar to me deciding that I wanted my picture taken wearing mine.

Reminiscing over some sold pieces today. One of the many things I love about vintage and antique pieces is that you never know what you might come across.

Coiled up in the snowy moss are two golden Victorian era serpents. They adorn a pair of very wearable earrings in 14 carat gold, with green paste gems and Etruscan style ropework details. Each serpent forms an airy little knot almost in the shape of an 8, a symbol of eternity which makes perfect sense as snakes symbolised eternal love to the Victorians. Lightweight and comfortable to wear, they once most likely had back-to-front findings now with newer latch-back (or russian) closures, making them sit very safely on the earlobe.
I love how they turn their heads towards each other, creating a beautiful frame for your face as you wear them.
