Probably all believers and non-believers have heard of John the Baptist at least once in a lifetime. Some people even call him “the greatest man ever to have lived.” What was so great about him? John the Baptist was a real historical figure and Jesus Christ’s forerunner who prepared people for the coming of the Messiah. “The Baptist” part emerged because he called on his followers to go through a ceremony of baptism. Jesus, as you know, was among the recipients of his rite of baptism.

The icon of the Virgin Hodegetria that you see in the picture is made with tempera on wood, but it is a riza, also called oklad, that distinguishes it from other images. Such metal covers serve three functions: they protect icons from candles and prevent the darkening of the surface; they direct the focus of a viewer; and, finally, they make icons more valuable because covers are often embellished with semi-precious or precious stones and pearls. The featured antique icon was sold for €2,000 by the Scandinavian auction house Bukowskis.

There are quite a few icons of the Theotokos, from the Feodorovskaya icon of the Mother of God to Our Lady of the Sign. In the picture, you can see one more incredible example of an antique Russian icon depicting the Virgin Mary with Jesus Christ in her hands. According to history, it was painted in the 15th century by an anonymous icon painter from the Novgorod School, the predecessor of the Moscow School. Nowadays, this antique icon is in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

On closer look, however, you can clearly see that the piece has seen better days. To make the icon shine again and get rid of visual defects, you need professional icon restoration services. The 19th-century icon in the original Ovchinnikov wood case features Saint Andrew (in the center) flanked by Saint Alexander and Saint Xenia. The imperial triptych painted in Old Russian style was given by the Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich and Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna to their son Prince Andrei Alexandrovich after his birth. The family icon was auctioned at Sotheby’s, with the estimated price of $250,000-$300,000.

The given icon of the Theotokos of the Unburnt Bush was painted circa 1600-1633 at the Church of the Intercession on Luza in Russia. This famous type of image is also known as the Burning Bush icon. Its plot revolves around the miracle witnessed by Moses in the Old Testament. Now, take a look at the composition. Traditionally, it consists of two overlapping diamonds: the red one features the four Evangelists, and the green one usually depicts the archangels at its corners. As of today, the featured icon is in the collection of the notable Andrey Rublev Museum.

Kazan was once home to a distinct school of iconography, which brought up many talented icon painters. The featured work is a fantastic example of the style typical for the iconographers belonging to the Kazan school. Distinctive dark tones imbue Saint Nicholas icon with solemn seriousness and profound privacy. Unfortunately, the master’s name was long lost to time. The piece is now held in the collection of the Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery of Burgas in Bulgaria.

The featured icon depicts one of the most revered saints in Orthodox Christianity — the Prophet Elias. This piece is dated back to the 19th century and was probably painted in Guslitsy. The icon pictures the life of the Prophet, with its centerpiece dedicated to the scene titled “Prophet Elias in the Desert.” The most interesting thing about this specific piece is that it features a rather rare scene depicting Avdius, a servant of King Ahab, who saved Elias from death.

This amazing antique icon is an impressive piece of 19th-century Russian religious art. It features all the Great Feasts and Minor Feasts of the Orthodox liturgical year, as well as the scene of the Resurrection — the Harrowing of Hades in its centerpiece. The Feast cycle traditionally starts with the Nativity of the Mother of God and ends with the Pokrov. Such complex icons, which are called “polnitsy,” were popular among all social classes and were often commissioned by churches.

The given antique icon of the Lamentation, also known as “The Entombment of Christ,” dates back to the first half – mid-16th century. It is believed to have been painted in Pskov, a city famous for its Pskov school of iconography, where medieval Russian icons and mural paintings were created between approximately 1175 – 1525. The name of the icon speaks for itself: it is a depiction of the scene of the lamentation over the dead Christ, with Mary stooping the head over the body of her Son.

The featured icon most likely belongs to the Mstera icon painting school, which is known for its highly decorative style and abundance of details in the icons. In the picture, you can see a so-called Calendar icon for November, depicting the constellation of saints arranged chronologically according to their feast days in Orthodox Christianity. Among them are Menas of Egypt, Matrona of Moscow, Philip the Apostle, and Nikon of Radonezh, among others. The holy piece dates back to the late 1700s – early 1800s, with the icon painter being unknown.

According to the Gospel of Luke, Zechariah got God’s announcement that he and his aged wife, Elizabeth, would have a son whose mission would be to prepare Israel for the coming of the Messiah. That boy was John the Baptist, and now you see the antique Russian icon depicting the scene of the birth of the famous preacher. The curious fact is that the baby was supposed to be named after his father, but Elizabeth objected and stated that his name would be “John.” The original version of the icon dates back to 1475-1500.
