it's also telling how whenever there's talk about diversity in the balkans from a western point of view nobody ever gives a shit about the roma and the persecution they face because that would require the west to adopt a slightly diferent worldview when talking about racism and discrimination but like. what did i expect

saw this take online and —
this proves my point so hard re: the total lack of cohesion when it comes to What The Fandom Thinks Happened With Jenny, bc the general take varies between the canon-supported but deeply messily written “she didn’t know” and the not canon-supported but easier to swallow “she had some idea that this could happen and was therefore at fault, removing any nuance/complexity from the scoobies’ reactions,” but THIS takes it a step further and i gotta preserve this take for science
i unironically really wanna write the fic where jenny actually was sent to sunnydale to straight up murder angel. it would have the energy of a forties screwball comedy and it would be a mess.

if you’re not a gypsy, you can’t say it ✨
if you’re not romani you can’t then claim something is “drawing on anti romani stereotypes” when it’s your own ignorance & bigotry showing through, especially when you are given direct evidence that it’s not romani cultural clothing ✨
if you’re not a jew you can’t give excuses for goyim antisemitism or excuse a hehe funny mini hitler ✨
if you’re not a jew you can’t criticize jewish headcanons made by jewish people in a marginalized ethnicity that has direct correlations to jewish oppression & literally has a hebrew first name ✨
especially when the same show has made their nazi inspired stand in a shitty ass creepy lesbian ✨
if you’re a racist, antisemitic piece of shit, stay in your lane ✨

you all realize that censoring the slur in the mlp fansong g///y bard doesnt remove the romani stereotypes from it right? that the problem extends beyond solely the use of the slur and into the writing of the song and the characterization of pinkie pie in fiw?

My sibling is watching Criminal Minds rn, and I decided to sit down and watch an episode.
I've never seen Criminal Minds. I figured it be, like, a bonding opportunity, or something.
And the antiromanyism and liberal use of the g-slur in the show really threw me off.
These characters were literally rolling from town-to-town breaking in to homes, killing people, and abducting children. And not just any children-- little blond haired, blue eyed white girls. They were slitting the parent's throats and stealing the little girls to make them child brides. They did this as part of some sort-of ritual with water and intentionally broken glass-- which they left everywhere because they're "incredibly superstitious."
And all these police and FBI were like: Romani (they used the g-slur) steal and teach their kids to steal, so let's search shopping centers to catch them because they're probably shoplifting and then reselling the clothes to make a living.
And like???
###
For anyone not aware: in Jewish wedding rituals, a glass is broken intentionally to make love eternal and marriage long-lasting, often by stepping on it-- which is exactly what these characters did. They scattered intentionally broken glass and broke glass at the scene of the crime and the "groom" then had to step on it.
So, it also seems like there was also a conflation of Jewish and Romani. Romani people have varying religious backgrounds as "there exist as many customs as there are Romani groups."
The broken glass thing might also be a Romani custom in some groups, but I am not Romani and would thus not have had that knowledge of customs passed down to me, orally, from my family.
But I am sure it's a Jewish custom. So, the fact the show creators wrote an episode where serial killers use a Jewish custom in a ritual where they kidnap blond haired, blue eyed white girls is incredibly suspicious.

Actually watching the movie sounds like torture but I’m am curious: from the leaks I got the feeling that America was less of a character in her own right and more of a plot device used for her powers, and certainly out of character. Like when making the movie they just wanted a dimensional teleporter character and not actually America Chavez and it shows. Is that something you’d say is accurate or no? Idk if you have any thoughts on America’s portrayal but I’d love to hear them.
Also Wendy… I’m wondering if there was any antiromanyism in her storyline beyond the child-stealing plot (which is a huge yikes obviously; perhaps less so because the mcu character is a whitewashed monstrousity as opposed to comics Wanda). I’m just wondering if they used any stereotypes either applied to mcu wanda in a “this is out perception of How Romani People Are, so here’s characterization for this character who should be Romani” or a repeat of the fortune teller costume thing.
If you don’t want to answer it’s fine it’s just hard to find someone who has a. seen the movie b. isn’t overwhelmingly positive c. isn’t an mcu wanda stan and you do seem open to giving your thoughts.
america/her powers were very much a plot device, but that said, she had some really nice character moments + she bounced off the rest of the cast, particularly dr strange, so well.
what was most frustrating to me was how she was being tossed between characters with little physical agency and no control over her powers. especially considering how powerful + self-assured she is in the comics pretty much from the moment she comes on the page! reminds me of how cassandra cain was nerfed in birds of prey. it would be very possible to rewrite the story to allow for ample america-beating-ass + ample multiverse-out-of-control-foolishness
hmmm. i have to say there is...something about the way elisabeth olsen is styled that speaks to a...decontextualized orientalism? it's difficult to explain, but popular visual shorthands for witches are heavily racially coded. similar to the antisemitic implications of green and/or big-nosed witches, there are also images of the witch that employ stereotypes about + bastardize visuals from brown + black culture. this caricature is related to the "fortune teller" antiromani caricature, the "voodoo witch" antiblack caricature, and more. the one wendy could possibly be referencing is more on the fortune teller side of things:
vaguely brown young to middle aged witch (often with light eyes) that has lots of "ethnic" jewelry ("ethnic" here meaning bastardized versions of roma, mena, and/or south asian culture), "ethnic" clothing, "ethnic" tattoos/makeup/markings, big bushy or dreaded hair, dark eyeliner + eyeshadow.
wendy emulates this some with the dark makeup, the darker, stripped down version of her costume, big hair, and black-stained fingers (i know this is a sign of corruption by the darkhold/dark magic/whatever but that doesn't lessen my point - connecting this "darker" wendy and "dark" magical items to an ethnically coded visual is an extension of the issue). maybe these visual examples showcase what im talking about?
cw images of white women in antiromani costumes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but this is difficult to parse because these signifiers have been so absorbed into witch iconography that it's hard to know what is purposefully racist and what is not.
even if the creators don't even know wanda is roma, they may know of that caricature, whether they are aware of its racial undertones or not, and want to emulate it. they may connect it to her naturally, not out of direct knowledge of her roma identity, but by influence of the obscured orientalist + antiromani caricatures that have plagued some of her comics representations.
or! dark makeup can just represent her corruption + emulate tired, sick, or sunken eyes. the stripped down outfit can be for similar reasons, and the black on her fingers can be a reference to "getting your hands dirty". ample plausible deniability here, which is so often the case with this shit. part of why it makes it so easy to call poc's criticisms crazy + "reaching" 😵‍💫
but considering the other orientalist/appropriative visual aspects of the film (see dr stranges multiple arms as an obvious reference to hindu deities), it isn't that far fetched...
idk! again i default to roma peoples' judgements on this. am i looking into it too much? is it just impossible to tell? lmk

hi !!!! i have been a huge fan of ur art for a long time, esp since i found it via x-men fanart, and it's what introduced me to evo which is now like one of my fave shows ever. i've always LOVED all your kurt/wanda stuff, but since i only rlly have access to the movies & tv shows, and wanda isn't even in the xmcu (💔), i've always wondered if they're involved in the comics or if it's just something you'd wanna see? obvs your earth-number-i-forgot au is yours, but the other stuff? i guess if ur willing i just wanna know what makes you like them so much, since everything you draw for them is so cute, and i don't get to see any of the source material!!
hi!
a lot of my interest in kurtwanda came from my old days of writing as kurt in the xmcu RP fandom here on tumblr :') i had some of my best times writing with my friend who wrote as wanda, we had loads of headcanons and just yeah haha. i think there's something about their visual contrast that's fun obvs the red and blue and then their similar sort of romani upbringings give them common ground, they're both sort of goth too lol.
but there IS also the cartoon wolverine & the x-men. they go on a date and wanda gives him a kiss, and i think this is all sort of a nod to the fact that kurt & wanda are married in the universe that gave us TJ wagner/nocturne
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and so yes they ARE in involved in the comics, but it's all entirely offscreen RIP!!! earth-2182 is their home universe - we only learn a little about their relationship via TJ, but she implies that her parents are a) married and b) very much in love:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(click through to view these properly, please excuse the antiromani slur used in the 2nd screenshot) there is also like... one extra panel where we see old man kurt watching wanda saving people on TV and he's like 'atta girl that's my wife' but i can't find it and you're not missing much b/c for whatever reason they said 'this version of wanda is as hot as always but this kurt is decrepitly old, bald, rocking a white goatee, and has an eyepatch.' really a weird turn for our favourite elf.)
but yeah i would recommend the wolverine & the x-men scenes: they appear together in episode 10 - greetings from genosha and episode 15 - hunting grounds i think they may appear in other episodes but it's been a while since i've watched the series, these are the only 2 where they are both main characters and their storylines interact.
anyway tysm for asking! i'm glad u enjoy my drawings of them and tbh i miss them!!! need some more free time to be drawing my faves they're honestly a ship for the ages!!!❤️💙❤️💙

Warning for antiromanyism in today's Dracula Daily.
It includes antiromani slurs (two kinds!) and some pretty typical stereotypes, but they are at least not portrayed as evil.

Idk if you’ve said anything about this already, but Wanda speaks Romanian in midnight suns. I don’t think “transia” has a (modern) official language, so it could be that Romanian is just what they speak there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a case of them think Romani = Romanian
Well, Romanian is the official language of Transia, which, again, is a former Wallachian territory that is most likely situated in between IRL Romania and Bulgaria. So, Wanda certainly does speak Romanian, and most writers would probably assume that it's her first language-- if they're thinking about it at all. She's canonically a polyglot who is fluent in several European languages, but, yes, Romanian is the language she would have spoken growing up in Transia.
That said, the Maximoffs were part of a largely independent, un-assimilated migrant group, so they would have most likely spoken a dialect of the Romani language among themselves. If I had to guess, I'd say that the twins were raised bilingual. This never comes up in comics because most writers don't realize that Romani people have their own language(s)-- those that do, like Orlando and Robinson, usually end up botching it anyways.
So, if I had to guess, I'd say that's what's happening in Midnight Suns. It's less likely that they mistook Romani for Romanian, and more likely that they didn't think to ask if Romani people have their own language. Also, I don't know if she'd speak it around gadje at the Abbey anyways.
Tumblr media
"Bună ziua," lit. "Hello"
This is probably a good time to mention that Midnight Suns... seems to have largely erased Wanda's Romani identity. I don't want to say that she's necessarily whitewashed, but her racial and cultural background seem to have been omitted from the game.
There may be some small mention that I haven't come across yet, but the racial elements have been completely edited out of her backstory, which I find really bothersome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the source material, the Maximoff family struggles financially due to racism and discrimination, and the violent retribution to Django's thievery is racially motivated. What's more, Django himself has magical abilities, and their whole community seems to have been aware of, and embraced, Wanda and Pietro's gifts. This is conveyed through antiromani stereotypes, but the point is that Django would never have turned on Wanda like that.

Why not send ask to others about tagging? They might not see this and most people on here are willing to tag if its brought up
"Why not send ask to others about tagging? They might not see this and most people on here are willing to tag if its brought up" (i think my blog still has that horrid desktop theme thay makes asks unreadable iirc so heres anon's message copypasted)
if it was just like, one or two people id do that but overwhelmingly its been most rbs of the post that ive seen. also if its an article about police brutality, generally id think that it would be self evident to tag for bigotry against whomever is being systematically targeted and im not sure what else to say that would convince ppl abt that. like it goes into Why ppl are rbing it- is it bc of solidarity with romani people and to try to draw attention to that civil rights movement or is it to further bolster anticop messages using romani lives as a vehicle to do so? and thats not something i can get into discussing with most of the ppl ive seen doing this bc i dont have the energy to be on the defensive for that entire conversation right now
and like, thats obvi not the only possible reason why someone may not have tagged it. maybe they ran out of time, maybe they forgot, maybe they dont know romani people are racialized and they think the article is talking about romanian ppl, theres tons of other potential reasons. maybe they dont think anybody w ties to romani communities follows them, or maybe they dont think its all that bad. theres so many reasons why someone may not be tagging for it and while id like to hope for the best of someone just forgetting to tag, id also have to be mentally prepared for the worst with each interaction.
when i have more time, i might go back to the ppl i remember rbed it without tagging for racism and sending an anon message for moving forward, but like. for a multitude of reasons i am not in the space where i can do that for every single person ive seen doing this so far
edit: also to be very clear i am against cops as an institution, but in terms of like. are ppl prioritizing that hate in this case over caring for the romani ppl affected etc yknow

certainly i could twist canon up in such a way that giles’s anger at jenny makes sense, and i have, but none of it is actually rooted in the misogynist antiromani writing that makes up the way that her character is handled ✨

the level of character assassination mcu "wanda" went thru in multiverse of madness is perhaps the only 616 wanda thing abt her 😭 its difficult to critique bc on 1 hand, White Women Be Like, but on the other, this is the misogyny + ableism that wanda has always been subjected to
it seems it shouldn't have the added layer of racism, but it also...somehow still does? because the demonization they are subjecting mcu "wanda" to has been copy-pasted from the original demonization of wanda
the way that wanda has been negatively characterized in the comics is inextricable from racist stereotypes about roma women… the ways the comics displayed that racism is in full force in MoM.
there are parts of it that are more blatant than HoM. mcu "wanda"'s positioning as an evil witch coming to steal away someone else's children is HIGHLY reminiscent of antiromani racist canards. even if she is trying to steal them from herself (her other self).
but this has precedent. the mcu suddenly remembers wanda is supposed to be roma only when they want to invoke racial stereotypes + canards. this is "sokovian fortune teller" part two
idk its hard for me to parse. but romani people will definitely have more insightful takes on this movie or this kind of whitewashing in general so please feel welcome to rb or reply w/ thoughts!
