🎉 As I’m sure you all know by now, today is my thirtieth birthday, yay! 🎉
I decided to both honour the hobbit tradition of giving a gift to you all, and attempt to contribute something late to ‘An Unexpected Anniversary’ by writing a little fic.
Recently, @ahiddenkitty reblogged a lovely photo of Bilbo here (x), and the tags she added really inspired me, so this is what I used as my prompt for the fic.
Enjoy!

Three years to the day following the beginning of the Quest for Erebor, Bilbo was asked to pose for an official portrait.
"All the Company are having a portrait painted of them." Ori beseeched, scurrying after the belligerent hobbit as fast as his legs could carry him while encumbered with goodness knows how many scrolls. "Besides, all the newly arrived dwarves want to see the Hero of Erebor."
This was probably the wrong thing for Ori to say, and behind him, Balin brought a hand to his face in order to pinch the bridge of his nose despairingly as Bilbo halted, turned, and replied; raising his arms in an acerbic flourish.
"Well, here I am. They can see me well enough as is. In case you forget, I am the only hobbit living here, so I daresay newcomers should not have much trouble in guessing who the so called Hero of Erebor is."
"Does the idea of a portrait upset you that much, laddie?" Balin came to Ori's rescue, stepping up beside Bilbo to place a fatherly hand on his shoulder.
The effect was instantaneous. Bilbo sighed and let the tense hunch to his shoulders ease as he regarded the elder dwarf, replying in as measured a way as he was able whilst still trying to convey the proper amount of conviction.
"It's not so much upsetting as it is ridiculous. I’m not a hero, Balin. I do not need some daft painting of myself hung for all and sundry to gawp at."

Earring
In the dimly lit chamber, the fireplace was the only source of light. Bilbo sat in front of it, tensing up as he felt Thorin threading his fingers through Bilbo’s hair. He grimaced, when the needle pierced through the skin of his ear and stifled the groan as the earring was forced into it. Something gently rubbed at the sore place and when Bilbo glanced to the side he saw Thorin putting away a blood-stained piece of cloth.
He shivered, when Thorin placed a gentle kiss on the earring, as if apologizing for the pain.
“How does it look?” Bilbo asked curiously, unaccustomed to the peculiar feeling of the metal piece weighting down his ear.
“Good,” Thorin replied tersely. Bilbo snorted.
“Concise as never,” he said derisively, but softened when Thorin hid his face in the crook of Bilbo’s neck. “Are you tired?” he asked quietly. Thorin hummed in agreement, putting his arms around Bilbo’s stomach.
“Wouldn’t you rather sleep in bed?” Bilbo exasperated as he felt Thorin’s breathing slowing down.
“No,” Thorin buried his face further.
Bilbo sighed. As he gazed into the fire he felt his own eyes drooping, the soothing quiet and warmth of the chamber putting him at ease.

Happy Unexpected Anniversary everyone! Please excuse any mistakes I made, I'm very out of practice.
It's rather short, but I thought I might as well post it. Enjoy :)
Thorin could remember the first time he met Bilbo. He had been tired from his journey to the Iron Hills, and he walked past the hobbit's house twice before he noticed the glowing rune on the door. He was already irritated when he slammed his fist against the round door, and seeing the person Gandalf had chosen for them-a simple halfling-had done nothing but increase his anger. He had let it get to him, insulting the little creature that was meant to help them. He went into the kitchen and found that, as expected, the rest of the Company had eaten the good food, leaving him with the scraps of their meal.
Throughout his rushed supper, the hobbit had stood around indignantly shouting (politely, he remembered. It had been rather interesting to hear someone manage to yell politely), until Gandalf quieted them all, and he began to explain their quest. The entire time, the infuriating hobbit stood behind him, asking question after question. It was like he had no clue as to what they were talking about. Thorin later found out that Bilbo hadn't known-and yes, Gandalf had gotten some rather murderous scowls cast his way during that conversation-but at the time it was just made him more annoyed.
And then the hobbit had fainted at the mere mention of incineration. Thorin felt that his enmity was justifiable, at that point. He had wanted to storm out, to leave the halfling lying there on the floor. Instead, he forced back his ire, and carried the small thing out to his sitting room, placing him on a chair. Gandalf had pushed past him, telling him to leave, and he did. He did not speak to the hobbit for the rest of the night.
The next morning, they prepared themselves breakfast and got ready to leave. No one woke the hobbit. They would not force him upon the journey. Still, Thorin left the contract lying on the table, where he would be sure to see it.
The first bet of the quest was about whether or not the hobbit would show up. Thorin didn't put any money in, uncertain of if he wanted the little being to show up. Before he decided, the hobbit was there.
The next few weeks went by slowly. The halfling struggled every step of the way, yet he didn't turn around and go home. Thorin couldn't wrap his head around it, resulting in him glaring at the poor being every time their eyes met. His hostility had not spread to the rest of the company, it seemed, for though the hobbit had stuck out of their group at first, Bofur, Ori, Fili, and Kili made a continuous attempt to include him. Over time, their conversations with him stopped feeling forced, and some of the others began to talk to him too.
Eventually, even Thorin was forced to admit that he had grown to like the hobbit. The burglar was trying his best, and he could not fault him for that. The night when they were captured by trolls proved that maybe the hobbit wasn't as useless and Thorin had originally figured. In Rivendell, he had overheard a conversations between Lord Elrond and Gandalf about the gold sickness. The hobbit had looked ashamed at being caught eavesdropping, and slightly afraid of being so close to him, but he hadn't even mentioned it. Instead, Thorin sat next to him, and told him stories about growing up in Erebor, and they both watched the fireflies.
Another two weeks passed without incident. Then, they had encountered the Storm Giants. Thorin had let his fear get the better of him, and he snapped at the hobbit, who had nearly caused both of their deaths. That night, he watched silently as the downtrodden hobbit prepared to leave. And then they had fallen into the goblin tunnels.
Thorin had not realized the hobbit was gone until they were already outside. Worn from all that had happened in a few hours, he stated that the hobbit was gone. But he was wrong. The halfling stepped out from behind a tree and declared his loyalty. Before he even had a chance to react, there was a series of howls, and they were running again.
Discovering Azog was alive was one of the worst moments of his life. He had been blinded by rancor, and charged thoughtlessly at the pale orc. Everything had been dark, as he tried desperately to reach his sword before he was beheaded. And then, a stream of light pierced the blackness. The hobbit had come, had saved his life. And then Thorin was gone to the world.
He had come to on the Carrock, disoriented and in pain. The words he said to the hobbit sounded slurred to his own ears, and he was hardly aware of them. Instead, he focused on the way the hobbit fit against him when he hugged him.
As they traveled, 'the hobbit' became 'master Baggins'. Thorin felt at ease with their burglar, and he wasn't sure when Bilbo had become their burglar and not simply the burglar. They entered Mirkwood, and grew closer. Thorin was in almost constant physical contact with Bilbo, keeping him safe and stopping him from wandering off due to some enchantment of the forest. When the sun was covered by the trees, and a sudden, pitch blackness fell upon the Company, their burglar led them by sound alone.
Despite their best efforts, the company did not get out of the forest on their own. They were captured by spiders, and then elves. Both times, Bilbo saved them. Thorin felt like he could have kissed  their hobbit when he had shown up with the keys to their cells and a plan to escape.
Their escape was unpleasant, but the Company made it Laketown regardless. Their burglar vouched for Thorin in front of the entire city, and Thorin felt love well up in his chest once again. That night, they sat up together, like they had in Rivendell oh so long ago.
“Call me Bilbo”, his burglar had said, and Thorin's heart sang. He could vividly remember that night, the way the mountain had looked under the full moon, the way Bilbo had looked under the moon, almost phantom-like, a beautiful creature more amazing than any on the earth.
That night was Thorin's last good memory on the quest. After that, they had reached the mountain, and the dragon had died, and the sickness had come, and-
A gentle hand on his arm draws him out of his mind, pulling him back to the present. Bilbo, his perfect Bilbo, is there.
“Come back to bed, love”, murmurs Bilbo, and Thorin allows himself to be pulled back to their bedroom. He lays down, sliding up against his husband.
“What were you doing?” Bilbo asks, and presses a soft kiss to Thorin's lips.
Thorin merely smiles. “Just remembering”.

An unexpected Anniversary
I wanted to write something to celebrate but as usual, rl and other business have got in the way so I’m posting a very rough draft of my FIRST BAGGINSHIELD FANFIC *throws confetti*!!
Please note that English is not my forst language and it’s not betaed so any advice/correction/suggestion is very welcomed! Oh, and I need a title too! XD
HAPPY UNEXPECTED ANNIVERSARY!
Exactly 16 months, 2 days and 9 hours from his crazy adventure with 13 Dwarves and 1 Wizard, Bilbo was making (first) breakfast when a light but firm knock-knock was heard at the door of Bag End.
Now, no well-mannered Hobbit could ever turn up at that time (before 10 o' clock!), so there were few other hypotheses about the mysterious visitor's identity, but nevertheless Bilbo was caught very unprepared by who was standing in front of him.
“I know that is early for tea... you said at 4, if I recall right...” murmured Thorin as the Hobbit came round and let him in.
“But you are perfectly in time for breakfast!” answered Bilbo smiling softly and he trotted down to the pantry to bring some more seed cakes.
Thorin followed him down the hallways of Bag End noting some differences from the last time: not only some furniture was mismatched (something unacceptable for a respectful hobbit hole) but also a reigning chaos of books piled on the ground, umbrellas left in the corners...
“Ah... sorry for the mess...” said Bilbo reappearing from the kitchen “You would never imagine what was going on my return: they were selling everything!”
And between a cup of tea (coffee for Thorin, since the Dwarf preferred it like Bilbo remembered) and some sandwiches, the Hobbit told him all the details about his alleged death and the difficulties recovering his properties.
Thorin listened to the last word smiling softly but when finally Bilbo questioned “What about you? What business bring the King Under the Mountain in the Shire? Where are the others? Are they well?”
The Dwarf didn't reply but neared a shelf that was detached from the wall saying: “I could fix it, if you want... do you have a tool box?”
And despite Bilbo's  protests (“You're a guest! I can't let you work! You must be tired from the journey! Thorin!”) in a couple of hours all the shelves of Bag End were back on their proper spots.
Meanwhile the Hobbit, feeling guilty for being a terrible host, prepared an hot bath and warm towel for refreshing his guest.
“I'm sorry but the water pipes have some problems since Dwalin's last visit in my bathroom...” explained Bilbo filling the tub with a bucket of hot water.
“I could fix it too, if you want” repeated Thorin and Bilbo did not even have a chance to protest this time before the pipes were working again.
“I could hire you as handyman” joked Bilbo during dinner.
“Thorin at your service” replied the Dwarf slightly bowing his head and Bilbo couldn't miss the smirk on his lips.
They stared at each other for a moment, then burst into a laughter.
Bilbo tried again to question Thorin about Erebor but everytime he approached the matter, elusive answers were all he got.
At least seemed that everyone were well and the kingdom was regaining its splendour.
The following morning, the Hobbit was waked up by a steady hammering in the garden outside his window.
“Thorin! What are you doing?” asked Bilbo rushing out in his dressing gown.
“I'm repairing the fence” replied the Dwarf as if it was obvious and perfectly normal.
“And he's doing a very fine job too!” added Hamfast, Bilbo's neighbour, who was walking by on his way back from the market.
“It's nothing too complex...” said modestly Thorin but Bilbo didn't miss the satisfied glance that his friend gave him.
“I don't mean to be rude but I'd like to have an help with my fence too...” continued Hamfast “If it is not too much a bother...”
So in the afternoon Bilbo went with Thorin (though Hamfast's hole was just a few turns around the hill he thought that it was not wise let him wandering alone) to the Gamgee's where they got to work until sunset.
As repayment, they were offered a splendid dinner with plenty of wine and ale; the Hobbits living nearby, thinking that was a sort of party, joined them bringing more food and more wine and more ale, so the voice that Thorin has moved in Bag End and that he was able to repair anything spread out in a flash (maybe the information were slightly misrepresented by the alcohol but so Ms Mimosa Burrowes was told at the market the day after by Tolmann Hogg who in turn was revealed by Odo Proudfoot who has eavesdropped Malva Goldworthy and Pansy Oldbuck's conversation).
In no time, there was a row of Hobbits out of the Bag End's green round door asking of Thorin for a favour, an order... or just for sake of curiosity (but they were always promptly removed).
One day a powerful storm raged on Hobbiton and it took almost a whole week to repair all the broken windows.
Another day, Thorin decided to build a swing for the Hairyfoots' 5 daughters and the week after that to make a new irrigation system for Hamfast's vegetable garden.
Bilbo got used to take note of Thorin's orders on a notebook on his desk in the studio and make him lunch boxes with cheese and sandwiches when the Dwarf stayed at work at the forge for long.
Often ravens came bringing messages from Erebor, letters from Balin, Fìli&Kìli and the rest of the Company but no a word bout what that seemed a prolonged vacation of the King.
And Bilbo couldn't help overthinking it.
Until he decided to tackle the matter directly and one evening marched in Thorin's workshop (since when?) that was previously one of the many unused rooms of Bag End and asked: “What are you doing here?”
The Dwarf looked up from the desk and replied, even if he knew that was the wrong answer  : “I'm fixing your old water-can”
“No, not here “here”... here in the Shire!” exclaimed Bilbo.
Thorin's expression clouded at this “If I am a bother, I can pack and leave tomorrow morning...”
“I'm not saying it!” insisted Bilbo on the hedge of exasperation “But you're a King! You should... don't know... sit on a throne and rule?”
“I can't...” murmured Thorin, so faint that the Hobbit almost struggled to hear him.
“Pardon?”
“I said that I can't!” exclaimed Thorin “ I can't sit under that blasted stone without the fear that would infect my mind again! I can't supervise Erebor's  revenues and not to be horrified by gold! I can't even sleep because I'm afraid to dream of Smaug!”
Bilbo was staring at him with wide eyes and Thorin couldn't bear it anymore. He looked down, defeated.
But after a moment, he felt Bilbo's touch on his hairs. Thorin wrapped his arms around the Hobbit's waist.
“I can't live in terror of hurting the persons I love...” he added.
“Silly dwarf” smiled Bilbo “You should have said before”
“Stay with me and maybe I can fix you”
Exactly 19 months, 7 days and 3 hours from their first encounter, Thorin made Bilbo a ring. Well, Bilbo already had a ring to which he was quite attached (to not mention the fact that it was magical and therefore useful) but accepted Thorin's one with a “Yes”.

For their anniversary, Bilbo and Thorin go out to dinner at a fancy elven restaurant that Bilbo has always wanted to eat at.
It goes about as well as anyone familiar with elves and dwarves might expect.
