Your OC Backstory: Joy

Joy is a hard one to find for Freedom, but here is my entry into @yourocsbackstory prompt for the week. Enjoy!

"But Mother! I don't want to wear a dress!"

"Young lady, you are a noble and this is an important event. I thought you were excited to go to the parade for the Magistrates birthday?"

"I am! I'm super excited, but why do I have to wear a dress? I can't run in a dress without it flying up!" Daeris crossed her arms with a huff.

"Firstly, you don't need to be running. You stay with me and your father. Your brother will be busy helping Faelwen prepare for her father's parade. So you have to behave and stay right with us."

Daeris's mother smiled at her in the mirror, brushing out her long black hair. The young girl scowled at her, but finally uncrossed her arms and sighed.

"Can I at least have a sweet bun if they have them? I mean, if I have to wear this, I deserve it I think."

Lady Anwin laughed softly, starting to braid her hair. "If you behave and listen, I suppose I could arrange that. Let's not tell your father though."

Daeris reached up, making a zipping motion over her lips. This was going to be a great day!

"Why didn't I get a parade for my birthday? I just turned six! That's a big birthday!"

"It is, I agree, but while we're nobles, we're not the leader of the country. That makes the Magistrates birthday more important than ours."

"I think everyone should have birthday parades!" Daeris smiled at her in the mirror as she worked the intricate braids into her hair. "Thank you for my dress. Even if I can't run in it, it's very pretty, mother."

"You're very welcome. And you're very pretty too."

Daeris put her hands over her mouth, giggling softly. Her mother was always so nice to her, unlike her brother. Her brother was a butthead as far as she cared. She did her best not to fidget, the promise of the sweet bun silencing all complaints the six-year-old elf girl had. She'd be happy to wear dresses all the time if they rewarded her with sweet buns. She got to go to a parade and see all the people dressed up. Yes, it would be a good day.

"Mother?"

"Yes, my little raven?"

Daeris giggled at the pet name her mother only used in private for her. "Will there be horses in the parade?"

"Oh, I’m sure there will be. At least pulling the magistrates carriage if nothing else."

"Goodie! I love horses. They're so big and pretty."

"When you're older maybe we can get you a horse. It's important you know how to ride."

Daeris gasped looking at her with wide unnaturally green eyes in the mirror. "You mean it?"

"Yes, I can't promise, but even if we can't get you one of your own we'll get you lessons. So you can be around horses."

"Thank you! This is the best day! Sweet buns, horses, parades! I can't wait!"

Lady Anwin laughed softly as Daeris squealed her delight, a sad look in her eyes as she finished up her daughters hair. The image of her mother's eyes zoomed in closer and closer until the blue filled up everything.

Freedom sat up in the bed, breathing hard. Her head whipped around, black hair flying, looking for what had woken her. Her cheeks were wet, but she couldn't help but smile. If she was going to dream, she appreciated whichever God was over it giving her a good memory. One before everything changed and her mother stopped smiling at her.

She stood up, the barest amount of light filtering into the tavern room she'd been given through the closed shutter above the bed. For her, it was as good as full daylight as she padded over to a small table in the room, picking up a bottle of whiskey and lifting it to her lips. She'd been so happy that day. So full of joy and excitement. She wanted to hold onto it. To remember only the good things, but the memories of what happened after she got her powers threatened to override them. She took another deep drink, washing them away, letting the warmth of the dream wrap around her remembering a time when her mother loved her.
