#anyway I always have these webcomic ideas and this is one of them

You know, it's always struck me as a little odd how little most webcomics actually attempt to adapt to their medium. There's basic strips, the old 2k era 4-square, the endless scroll of Webtoons, and a few weird experimental things like Homestuck, but most webcomics I run into tend to stubbornly stick to conventional portrait-oriented page layouts.
It's… readable, I guess, but that format doesn't seem to work very well for either desktop or mobile viewing. It wastes a lot of screen-space, and usually makes it impossible to actually view the full page without making the text too small to read.
Have you encountered any interesting webcomics that experiment with more landscape-oriented layouts? I'm kinda curious about how well that would work.
So, there's this dude Scott McCloud who wrote about comics in the 90s. His first book, Understanding Comics, is literally the book on comics, it's the one schools make kids read. This third book, Making Comics, is a pretty good practical advice guide I'd recommend, even if it's not his groundbreaking seminal work. In between those two books was one called Reinventing Comics
Tumblr media
Reinventing Comics, written in 1993, was basically a book of predictions about how this newfangled Interweb was going to revolutionize the art of comics creation. Like a lot of early-90s stuff "Wow the internet!" stuff, it has a lot of inaccurate predictions, and thus isn't super well remembered (though, unlike a lot of early-90s predictions of the internet, it at least vaguely resembled reality).
Anyway, one of the big things from that book was the idea of the "infinite canvas".
Tumblr media
Which was basically the idea that a comic didn't have to be constrained by the size of the screen because you could scroll it. And this was a big idea in early webcomics, you heard this phrase a lot. And you'd see infinite canvas techniques like "What if the characters are falling and the comic is really tall to sell that?"
Tumblr media
(Read Narbonic)
Which is basically the one and only example that actually took off, because it turns out that scrolling horizontally sucks and no one really wants to do it except as a one-of gimmick (as Homestuck does). The much bigger impact of the internet was that a webcomic could be infinitely long and still reasonably expect it's readership to have read it all, but I think McCloud missed that one. So while there were a bunch of "landscape" webcomics where you scrolled horizontally, none of them took off, and even the ones that were well received are long gone.
Tumblr media
Adams himself would make Zot!, which is a vertical scroll comic that had a bit of a gimmick with parallel story beats being literally parallel. I think he even did some branching paths, and experimented with comics that you could read in different directions or that looped back on themselves.
Tumblr media
But then Homestuck just did that better because, as I mentioned, infinite depth ended up being a lot more impactful than infinite width. It turns out that making a comic really wide calls a lot of attention to itself and makes the comic annoying to read. And it doesn't mean you can't do it (Homestuck did it!), but it does mean it can't be the gimmick you hang your comic up on unless you've got a really good reason for doing it.

First of, I'm a big fan of your work. I love your comics and art and was happy to hear about the engagement 😁
As for my question, I love writing stories and creating OCs/characters. In your recent comic you called out that the only ace/aro rep always seems to be "the creator said so on Twitter" (a problem with a lot of rep. in media).
So I was curious, if I wanted to create an aroace character (and write a story with them), how could I naturally show them being aroace? Do you perhaps have any idea?
Thank you so much for the kind words!^^
Arguably my complaints are ironic because I myself haven't done proper aroace rep in my own fiction thus far – though I guess I'm compensating for that with my current comics, haha 🙈 But also, I've said it before and I'll say it again cus I'm annoying like that – Bojack Horseman did it, in my opinion, so that gives the rest of the media less excuses I guess.
So, again these are my personal views, and they're possibly demanding, but this would be my checklist for ideal aroace rep:
The aro/ace character needs to... BE a character. Actually have arcs, that matter within the story. Whether they're about being asexual or not doesn't really matter as long as THEY matter as a character.
...Ngl I feel they need to matter BEFORE they're revealed as aro/ace too, and obviously after. If they don't, they'll just feel like a placeholder who's just there to tick a box to me.
The fact that they're aro/ace needs to be addressed and not pushed under the rug or left up to interpretation. Leaving things up to interpretation will have so many people interpret them as allo for sure (just like in real life). And conversely, saying they're aro/ace may spark some curious questions and possibly awkward conversations (just like in real life). (...Again tbh Bojack Horseman was great at doing it naturally. The confusion from the ace character themself, the ace character's friend assuming they're gay because yeah that always happens, the MC having a friendly yet clueless "haha you're lucky that'd save me so many problems if I didn't have sexual attraction"... I could go on.)
By that I also mean... Actually NAMING the orientation at some point. If it's not named people who consume the media and don't know such an orientation exists will be none the wiser. (I'm guilty of that myself tbh. In one of my webcomics I had an alloaro character but never had the orientation mentioned within the story, I left it at showing he has sex and him having a conversation with his family explaining he doesn't have a favorite person because he just can't, but I feel like that's not enough, and I've been feeling a bit bad about it.) A good way of bringing that up fairly naturally would be to have the character figure out their orientation within the story, as a way to have the audience learn alongside them; but it could also be played for drama, which I don't think I've ever seen and would like to dabble with myself at some point – like, imagine you have a friend you hold dear who's key to your personal development and suddenly you find out they see you as sex / romance prospects and not as a friend like YOU do? That'd be crushing but that could definitely make for a good conflict. I should try writing that. I'm rambling anyway. Bleh.
Another thing that, to me, is key to the aro/ace experience is that the character may have some moments of questioning their place in the world. Our world is obsessed with sex and romance and fiction exacerbates that to the point where some characters barely even exist if they don't have romance. This could range from "Do I NEED to even identify myself as something" (again, Bojack Horseman did that great) to "Friendship is the most important relationship to me but not to my friends, what if they all abandon me once they find the one person they consider 'more important'". I dunno. I feel like there could be some interesting storylines there. I definitely would love to dabble into that myself a bit more, though I lack the time and talent – those concepts and the lack of things that are done with it live in my head rent-free.
...Actually I feel it could be good to show aro/ace characters as full of heart (if it fits their personality), having their own feelings and emotions outside of the usual romance spectrum, to show that they're just as human and compelling as the other characters. (...AGAIN Bojack Horseman did that great imo, I feel bad that I'm only ever quoting that show but that's still the best example I can ever think of.) Like – betrayal, loneliness, grief, kinship, literally ANY other form of love than romantic love... We feel all of those too, and those deserve to be addressed in stories just as much (if not more) than the pining or simping that's kinda everywhere.
Oh yeah and speaking of being human... Yeah, human. We need more human aro/ace characters. Making it so that only the aliens/gods/demons/robots/whatever are ever allowed to be aro/ace only serves to dehumanize these orientations.
...IIIII think that's it. I might be forgetting some things I'd wanna add on later but I think that covers everything that would make for ideal rep in my own opinion

... ⠀⠀יִיִ⠀𝃣 ⠀⠀ writeblr intro ⠀⠀ 💌 ⠀⠀ ── ⠀⠀ ;
hello ! my name is third king january but feel free to call me third or january ( or any other nickname you'd like ) ! i'm a twenty two year old black lesbian pursuing a graphic design major with a minor in art history and creative writing—considering media studies—who uses they/them pronouns !
ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧ :⠀ 🍓. i think this may be my third or fourth time trying out a writeblr, but the other attempts didn't go well since i was busy and didn't put a lot of effort into interacting with my mutuals </3. this time around, i really want to be a part of the community and be more supportive of everyone's writing! my goal for this account is to share my wips, any writing, and keep motivated to do more than just stare at a blank document for hours </3.
i'm a big reader and i plan to share some of my recently reads on this blog. please feel free to send me book recs if you think it's something i might like or if you just wanna ramble about something you read that you really liked! my favorite genres are horror, magical realism, fairy tales and fantasy. i love beautiful prose that's almost poetic and ambiguous writing that has you questioning everything until the grand reveal.
my favorite books are: bunny by mona awad, deathless by catherine m. valente, and how to win the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone. the last two books helped me understand the kind of writing style i want to strive for as did poetry !! i don't have a whole lot of fav poems, but worm king's lullaby by richard siken is one that's always spinning in my head.
alongside reading i like manga, webtoons, videogames, and anime. my all time favorite anime is hyouka followed by angel beats and clannad. my favorite webtoon is omniscient reader's viewpoint and i can't recommend it enough. it's soosososo good! ( i started with the webtoon before switching to the novel bc i was too impatient to wait for the updates ) my favorite games are the halo series and oxenfree.
other interests of mine include music, drawing, art, watching youtube videos, journaling, horror movies, and sleeping 😴. i have a few graphic novels / webcomics in my wips so i'm learning how to draw to make them a reality! i also have a video game that's tied to another wip so i'm getting into coding as well !
please never be shy / afraid to tag me in ask games, send me an ask, or even a message! i also have a discord ( username: thirdking ) if you'd like to add me and message me there. also never think or feel like you're bothering me or anything if you wanna say hi or ramble about your interests. i'm always looking to make new friends !! 😁
i ask that minors don't interact or follow !! thank you !!
i have a handful of wips that's been running laps in my head for some time now but these are the ones ( excluding shorter stories ) that aren't multimedia projects or animation ideas, but i may talk about those anyways 😋 since most of these are still in the outlining stage they're subject to change but i'll make sure to update anything to reflect those changes !
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip one ; spring ( technically untitled but springs gna be in the final title )
the story follows two ex band mates reconnecting in their adult years after they parted ways when their front man signed a major record deal.
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip two ; sisyphus
sisyphus stars three siblings at the center of a conspiracy 1!1!1 the oldest sibling, an astronaut, goes missing during a privately funded space mission embarking to a new planet found in the solar system. i wouldn't call this a greek retelling, but it does a feature a lot of nods to classic greek myths!
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip three ; atwe
atwe follows the mother of a teen superhero getting revenge after her kid is killed by an unknown villain. though it's my own special take on superheroes featuring my personal criticisms on teen heroes, it's also a study on family—in particular—distant family relations and saying i love you a little too late.
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip four ; march marchen ( title will definitely change )
march marchen is my sort of alice in wonderland / fairy tale retelling that follows an unnamed girl in what might be wonderland trying to figure out who she is and who she isn't. ft parallel worlds, escapism, the fear of childhood, and the fear of adulthood.
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip five ; neapolitan ( title will definitely change )
neapolitan is a magical girl webcomic / graphic novel. the story follows a trio of girls becoming the successors of a long line of ice cream inspired magical girls. ft a bright fun palette, gore, and cannibalism! though it's a webcomic, i intend to give it a novelization from the perspective of a different set of magical girls.
if you'd like to be added to a taglist please send me an ask! it'll be easier for me to keep track ! thank you for reading <3

Mr. Leech I had a dream that movies based on webcomics were the next big thing and Illumination tried to convince you to make an Awful Hospital movie with them what are your thoughts on this. What celebrities do you think they would try to get to voice acts the characters.
There's already so much I'd consider doing differently and so many conflicting ideas I narrowed down to begin with, plus the fact that all characters canonically exist in infinite design variations, there could basically never be a completely "wrong" way to even loosely adapt it. Unfortunately all the funny cartoon voice actors I'm familiar with just don't get cast in big budget big studio productions and I can't really tell one typical Hollywood movie star apart from another. Everyone who gets cast in Illumination and Disney movies sound like the same guy and same girl to me.
I still always imagine Dr. Phage as Dana Snyder but they'd probably cast some British sounding guy, which is still acceptable, I mean, I can't do Dana Snyder's voice so the voice clips I have made for Phage come out as more of an off-British Invader Zim voice anyway. I would actually INSIST on a Minions cameo somewhere though. In fact I'm just gonna say it: Minions are canon in Awful Hospital but not anything else from any movies that have Minions in them. Those are pretend movies in Fern's world but Minions are secretly real. They're from a really terrible unbearable zone that kind of defies description and some of them happen to work for Illumination acting in movies we don't realize are just mixing animation with live Minion actors.

How do you draw up your comics so quickly? I've been wanting to get into making comics myself, but it seems so daunting lol
Was hoping to get some tips on how you draw them so well and so quickly /pos /nf
Omf that's a tough one. My honest first response is "All I do is draw all day" so please don't hold yourself to my standards I don't have anything better to be doing.
Basically it's a mix of stuff:
My art style is simple/character designs are simple. Backgrounds are simple, overall.
STUFF BE SIMPLE.
"Gets the point across" tends to be the idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anatomy isn't perfect, gradients are used a lot, shading isn't always present, I try to limit my color pallets to be pretty small.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a bunch saved onto the side bar in Clip Studio. And I have presets like the borders of the panels as a pre-set so I don't gotta make a new one over and over again.
Short cuts are NOICE.
Art wise:
I start with a thumbnail. Just getting the idea/facial expressions of the character down.
Tumblr media
Sketching is 2nd step but I have no examples because I delete those pretty quickly.
More similar to this so line art is WAY easier.
Tumblr media
I change the sketch's opacity to like 20 ish and a light blue to see it better.
Then I do line art and add a neutral color under it to make coloring easy. I change this to black after ward to fill any gaps.
Tumblr media
Add color and ba-bam
Tumblr media
I use "Color burn" "linear burn" and Multiply in the layer settings for shading. Just depends on the circumstance.
Tumblr media
I guess smth else I do is go by "Chapter" or scenes.
Smth that's helpful for some is writing a script and then drawing your stuff based on that.
Often what I end up doing is writing a script but using it as a guide rather than a beat by beat thing.
Referencing manga for inspiration is smth I do a lot.
Smth I'd recommend doing is making a one shot or a comic you purposely make to be short.
Longer comics are daunting but the best way to deal with that is to complete parts of em. XD It's like going through a video game. Beating each mini boss gets you closer to the final. Like instead of one big project, see it as a bunch of smaller ones.
Smth I do to let off steam from bigger projects is making stupid shit like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like there's no point to it other than to be dumb and funny.
Keeping the story entertaining or fun even while doing a part you don't want too.
Sometimes you will just have to chug through a portion you dislike but is necessary. But staying strong really helps.
Pop on a freakin' YT video and zone the hell out is what I do.
Your art doesn't have to be perfect every single time, my comics at least, are free so anyone who complains is a little bitch.
Tumblr media
Just do what makes you happy.
Huge thing to consider: Your art doesn't have to be held to any specific standard.
You don't even have to COLOR that shit if you don't want too lmao. There's no rules. You can color a sketch and post it. It literally doesn't matter.
A specific standard of what every webcomic should be held to is a lie. It doesn't exist. Go feral.
Tumblr media
Draw backgrounds. Even if you suck at em. It helps give the world dimension hah.
That's what I've been trying to do.
Use your comics as a way to experiment.
Ghost Soulmate I wanted to try out this weird painter style for the shading/lighting.
In FSR it was trying out a more anime style
Falling Cards is weird character designs + A FAR too ambitious story hah.
Bunny and Kitty was to see if I could do a shorter form story.
Biggest advice would be: Just try smth. You got no obligation to finish smth either. Just try it and see how it goes.
I'd recommend having an idea where your story is going before you start, but just starting ANYWHERE helps.
I tend to doodle my characters before I jump into their comic. Doodle them doing fun stuff before I go into the meat and potatoes of what I want them to do. I often have an ending in mind too before I start. You can fill in the gaps later.
Anyways that's all I got Idk if this was useful or helpful. X'D

Do you have any advice to help or prevent writer's block? I have a terrible habit of starting but never completing what I write. Also really excited for the Charred Legacy!
Hello and thank you! My advice splits into two categories of writer's block, which I'll call here Classic Block and Progression Block. Classic Block refers to the block people usually mean, especially when drawing: that you can barely write three sentences before erasing it all because it's awful and you hate it, leading you to sit around stewing in frustration that your skill level is so low. Progression Block, meanwhile, is the block where the actual work of writing something to completion is a Herculean task, even if you don't hate your writing style. The distinction DOES matter, as you’ll see.
To start off, Classic Block sources from your standards of writing not matching what you perceive to be your level of ability. Maybe you used to like how you write, but now all you see is the flaws. Your skills have leveled out or lowered instead of steadily increasing in quality – at least, that’s how it feels. This leads to you not writing at all, or only getting a bit done and then abandoning it because it sucks and what’s even the point and you’ll never make anything good anyway and so on. It’s the same thing as artist’s block, just with typing.
This brand of block has similar advice in every medium of art that it appears in, which is “study and practice”. The only way to get better is to examine where your faults are at and work to fix them. If you find how you write dialog unnatural, for example, you take a look at books or scripts you enjoy the dialog of and pay close attention to how the characters talk, or you find as many advice posts on the web as possible about how to create natural-sounding conversations, or even just listen in to people chatting in the real world. Like an artist studies anatomy and feels more confident about their improving work, a writer studies all the advice they can get and applies it to their story, and continues writing for practice until they get somewhere they’re okay with. It may not be as easy as artist’s block to conquer, depending on who you are, but it is doable.
Progression Block is a different beast, and I’ve certainly felt it before on my comics and writing. This is when you’re at the beginning or starting the middle of your project and you find yourself unable to continue on to the end. Maybe you’ve lost the adrenaline that the start gave you; maybe the prospect of a long-term story is too daunting; maybe you ran out of ideas or passion; maybe you don’t like the start now and you want to rewrite it before you continue; maybe (and this is the most common one) you’ve found yourself at a part of the story you’re not that excited about and it’s difficult to get through it. Whatever the case is, you’re good at starting ideas, just not finishing them. This is extremely common, so don’t feel bad about it. I can’t count how many webcomics or fics I’ve seen left to rot after about a month of work on them. I’ve done it myself, multiple times! We’re all at risk of it.
The biggest thing to address here is that, sadly, writing is not always going to be exciting. That’s just a fact. You are not going to be riding a high the entire process. You WILL get to something that feels more like homework than fun. This is a guarantee for every single project that goes on longer than a couple pages, and sometimes even the short stuff isn’t safe. This is not a horrible thing, it’s just something you need to develop methods to overcome. Discipline is important if you want to take writing seriously. There are ways to get through this: dinner-before-desert (the promise of “I have to write this dull chapter and I’ll get to write the scene I’m really excited about”), setting small goals to get the unfun part done a bit at a time (writing 200 words a day, or a couple paragraphs, etc), finding things to appreciate (like that joke you threw in or how pretty this scenery is), and having something occupying the senses to keep flow going (listening to music, mainly) are all tools I use myself to get past potentially weeks of writing that I’m not excited about. You do need to be a little stern with yourself, but the reward of getting to the thing you’ve been dreaming of since the start is completely worth it, I can promise that. You just gotta eat your dinner first, and then we’ll get you some ice cream. One carrot at a time. You can do this.
Something that can get to people is the prospect of being “stuck” with something for months or potentially years. The size of a project can be intimidating, I understand that. You’re doing this particular thing for god knows how long, and you have to do it on a regular basis if you ever want to get anywhere with it? That’s a little scary! I get it! But that does not mean you won’t have fun, or won’t ever be finished. It took me six years to complete a comic you can read through in one day, I’ve started one I know will take me at least ten, and Iterum itself is going to be a long fucking ride I don’t dare to guess the length of. I have had the occasional sensation of leaning on a table, bracing myself on my arms, staring down at a drink and thinking “Jesus Chirst” about how long all this shit will take me.
With that issue, I’ve personally found that taking joy in the process is the best solution. “Well, I do love writing these particular characters, I’m excited to see how they’ll grow over time!” “Planning chapters is a very chill way to spend my evenings while still giving me something to think about.” “It’s so exciting to have all these secret plot developments no one but me knows yet!” And so on. Like in life, you should appreciate the Now, not constantly be fretting about Later or Before. Learn to love typing out dialog and prose! It’s doable.
Of course, you should have a few thoughts about the future. That’s where planning comes in. Some people can make up shit on the fly and write a complete, excellent novel. I am not one of those people, and not many are. Some architecture is generally necessary. When I don’t have a set general path ahead of time for me to take as I write, I give up on things because I don’t know where to go next. Create your path, however vague or exact it needs to be! My advice on planning is to start with only the most major of story beats, arrange them in the order you want or need them to happen, and add smaller connecting lines to them, then connecting even smaller lines to those lines, slowly getting more and more specific and detailed as you zoom in on the story beat-by-beat.
Another thing that might help you keep at it is finding an audience – at least, it worked for me. When I started writing for real, I was doing choose-your-own-adventure threads in forums, and then a choose-your-own-adventure webcomic, where people got to send in commands to move the story forward. I could not get anything completed on my own to save my life, but having people participating and actively waiting for me to continue the story helped me develop the discipline and work ethic required to do the projects I’m doing now (and taught me how to improvise extremely well, as a side benefit). Your audience could be one person, or ten, or a hundred. Even if they don’t comment or regularly engage with the story, just knowing that someone is there waiting to see what happens next can be a good motivator.
One final thing: you may fall into the trap many do of looking at the small bit of stuff you’ve completed, not liking it, and wanting to go back and rewrite it, because this time you’ve got the skills to do it right.
DO NOT FUCKING DO THAT.
All that’s going to do is trap you in an endless cycle of “improving” what’s already there at best, and wear you out from going over the same old ground over and over and drain your love for the story at worst. You will not be fixing anything. Put it out and move on. Don’t keep trying to rescrub the same plate until you put a hole through it. You’re going to look back and think it’s shit. That’s normal. Doesn’t mean it’s true, or that you should waste time “fixing” it. Learn to go “well, I don’t like it, but I gotta keep going”. Get it done. It will never be perfect, and the sooner you understand that, the sooner you can get this project done.
That’s about all the advice I can think of for now. I hope this prattling helped you, at least a little bit!

Glad to be here, lots more fanart coming soon, I’m really grateful for everyone who’s been supporting me <3
I got a lot of really sweet and fun responses bfdsfghitrtgyhcu I don’t deserve this 🫶🫶🫶🫶
Never been in tumblr before so I’m still getting used to this
(No way I’m finishing this drawing- lazy)
Fun(?) facts yay
- I play guitar and violin
- My favorite metal genres are Thrash, power, neoclassical, glam, and recently started listening to death metal
- I have a pretty broad music taste, I have a soft spot for popular, pop if you will, music from the 1920s to 2000s
- I usually dress like I’m allergic to colors but sometimes I need to look like the girliest girl’s girl that ever girled in the world
- I like to pretend I’m this really hardcore stereotypical teen but I couldn’t hurt a fly if I wanted to (being fr rn, it would probably beat me up first)
- I discovered KISS during mid-pandemic but haven’t interacted much with the fandom until beginning of last year (when I started doing fanart). Read my first kiss fanfic at my worst new year all-nighter and haven’t recovered since
- I feel kinda bad for reading/making gay content when I’m not even attracted to men
- When I like something, I try to learn and remember as much as I can about it (I have great memory for these things but horrible for everything else, somehow not failing school)
- Speaking of, here’s some stuff I like (aka things I devote my time and energy to consume and can’t shut up about): Michael Jackson, KISS, the actual fking titanic, Sanrio (DONT LEAVE I promise I’m not one of THOSE people), internet horror, girly things, lost media, old Barbie movies, 2010s YouTube, Monster High g1, attractive women
- RANDOM TANGENT! List of attractive women I find attractive (no particular order except for the first one):

Amy Lee
Hayley Williams
Kristen Stewart
Cyndi Lauper
80s Xuxa
Ann and Nancy Wilson
Ace Frehley
- Favorite movies (Actually in order):
Titanic
But I’m a Cheerleader
Rocky (1976)
Grease (1978)
Wizard of Oz
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
- Ace made me want to pick up a guitar, wow, big deal, so original
- I legit thought he was a girl when I first saw him without makeup (There’s no way I was the only one, or maybe I’m just dumb)
Spacechild lore + Fanfic related stuff at the very end
I talked briefly about this on the previous post, but I have this story on the Spaceman and Starchild that I plan around while I’m sleeping (I don’t have anywhere to write it down but still remember all of it) can’t really explain how my brain works BUUT what I can do is tell you the story!
Since I can’t write, feel free to borrow or steal any of my ideas since I’m probably never using them (unless I decide to make an illustrated novel/webcomic or something, but don’t expect anything from me)
Starchild is a lonely alien living in what’s left of the only planet that used to orbit him before he became a Star being (basically a living star going boom supernova and transforming into a humanoid). His only “company” is a woman who visits him in his dream, to whom he refers to as The Elder (It’s kinda like a parent child relationship, she’s the star that “gave birth” to him, get it? Star-child? I’m really smart, I know). He can see the future but since nothing ever happens to him, there’s nothing to predict… UNTIL
He has a dream about laying down on a dark, grassy field staring up at the sky, as he usually did, but this time, the stars that were always so far away, appeared to be curiously looking back at him, eager to know what was going to happen. Among them, there was a bigger, brighter blue light that appeared to be coming towards him. Scared, he tried to reach out to the elder, but she didn’t answer, right before the light got to him, he woke up
After waking up, Starchild just brushed it off as a strange dream and decided to take a walk. He eventually found himself sitting on a familiar looking field, he looked up, but everything seemed normal except for an unusual light out in the distance who appeared to be getting closer. Is it a shooting star? Is it a spaceship? Is it a… COMET?
It crashed right beside him, and when he opened his eyes, there it was. A frozen ice rock sitting right beside him, but when he looked up at it, there was something, someone sitting on top of it
A strange man looked back at him with a smile
There’s more but It’s not completely set in stone, I just know I want Spaceman to take Starchild to see earth and have fun adventures with him + Catman and Fox
They were really close friends that like to travel together, then one day they got turned into animals by an ankh wizard while visiting Egypt (also not set in stone but I really want Vinnie to make an appearance)
After their shared traumatic experience, they become practically brothers, learning how to live with their powers and animalistic needs
I wanted to maybe add a Demon cameo but idk where he could fit 🤘
FAV FANFIC TROPES LETS GO
- Slow burns
-“There was only one bed”
- Denial
- Found family (if you couldn’t tell by this point)
- Characters with no grasp on social cues
- Height difference
- Hurt Comfort
Other fic ideas I think about but aren’t as developed as the previous one
- Spacechild raising a baby (Would probably take place after the first story if it happens to have a sequel)
- Actual superhero origin stories
- Spaceman accidentally clones himself and ends up with an opposite version of him (Basically Tommy and Ace as some kind of opposite twins)
- Re-writing of kiss meets the phantom (Even though it’s already perfect it the way it is)
- Fox and Catman backstory
This is finally over
It’s the 2nd time I’m writing this thing bcs my dumbass forgot to save it 🫶
Anyways If anyone read this whole thing, thank you
I have no idea how to end this 🤘

If you're reading this, it means that I am now officially working for the NHS!
If you're reading this within the last few hours of it being posted, it means I am currently in my first training session!
All this means a lot less time for me to be online. I will probably be pretty active in the evenings, especially during my first week, as it's an easy, mindless thing to do when I'm tired.
This also means, less art and fanfiction updates. I mean my brain is always going so even if I'm at work I'll likely be throwing ideas around inside my head and end up coming up with a few things, but getting them out into the open takes energy and concentration which I won't have a lot of as my body adjusts to this new sleeping schedule.
So unless I feel particularly motivated one evening, don't expect anything original from me for about a week or so.
I promise I'll keep working on my submas fanfiction, and I still want to have a go at a mini comic with my fnaf glamrock sona, but other projects like my pokemon webcomic or that one crowd drawing that I've been putting off for months will have to wait a while.
In regards to that last one, I'm slowly working my way up to it again! I know a bunch of people are excited to have their sonas put in, so I promise I'll do my best not to make you wait too much longer!
Anyway! I'm terrified of starting this new job, but I can only do my best! Wish me luck!

Woe, 💕 be upon ye
I’ve been following ur Golden Brother fic for about… half the time it’s been up? I was already baffled by how u posted such long chapters of such GOOD SHIT, but recently I was like “oh yeah better check out their Tumblr!!” and… Who did you sell your soul to write that much, often post multiple drawings a day, AND have a webcomic (I still need to read it tbh) going??? LMAO
Whenever I open a new chapter and remember how long they tend to be, I go insane (affectionate, in awe, thankful).
That being said, if you overwork yourself with fanfic, fanart, or asks I will smack you with a large tree branch. So don’t u dare feel obligated to make a reply for this HHFJSBSNS
About the fic tho,,, your writing is so good. I came for the arc between Hunter and Vee (which I ADORE btw), but everyone’s characterization is just top tier imo. You even think through canonical strengths so well that you find new ways to turn them into FLAWS and I like it a very not normal amount.
Like… Luz genuinely fucking up a bit? Without being tricked like she was with Philip? You created such neat depth around her coping mechanism of distracting herself by helping others heheheee!!
Willow and how she got so set on being “the reliable one” that others find it hard to open up to her since the vulnerability feels one-sided is really interesting cuz it makes sense! It’s counterproductive, but I can see why she does it.
“The true mom-friend was Gus” is BASED, I’m absolutely here for it!!! He’s one of my favs, so I sometimes think he’s overlooked as far as character depth, but I love how you write himmm!!
Amity having to re-recognize that her and Hunter do indeed have a lot in common, but becoming very relaxed and understanding towards him once she does? Yissss always appreciate the (platonic) rosegold hostility->solidarity pipeline!
Hunter’s lingering child soldier mentality stuff is mmmmmmmmm!! And seeing him start to overcome it as he trusts others more IS SO!!!! AAAA!!!!! Plus his skill in understanding others and being a mediator from having a leadership role in the coven is super cool and fitting!! Also the grimwalker shenanigans are a blast ofc. Hhhnnggggg you’re really fueling my brainrot here >:[ /POS
Salty Vee fuels me. After being so mistreated for most of her life, she deserves to be a lil angry. As a treat. Directing it at Hunter may have been misplaced, but it’s understandable enough that Hunter himself recognized what she needed and encouraged her do her thing (when he does it out of guilt, I wanna hit him upside the head with therapy, but it’s still nice of him). And then her sudden, genuine “I forgive you” makes me wanna SOB, it’s so gooodddd!!
Even Jacob is super neat???? I never thought of Masha being like family sorta with him (and ngl I was actually :/ about the idea for a hot sec) but you worked it SO WELL!! I’m interested in his arc now lmaoooo
I can probably go on, but EEEE can’t wait to see more!!!!!
Anyways, THANK YOU FOR CONTENT!!!!! I wish you motivation, energy, health, happiness, and breaks if u need them XD
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for this letter, its been so lovely to re-read it and it's been very encouraging. 💝💝💝🙇
Idk where to start. Just thank you very much for saying all that. 😭🙇💙💙💙

ACT ONE - PART ONE
in reading homestuck again im going to try my best to analyse it to my fullest potential ; while i definitely like to enjoy homestuck Casually i think that doesnt necessarily mean i need to abandon fullblown analysis . i can acknowledge Hard Canon and The Implications in the same way i can acknowledge silly stuff + how im usually going to write characters . something something you have to know the rules to break them . thisll be half rambling half ( poor ) attempts at analysis and a bit of me going Hehe joke funny also i will use the characterses canon names and pronouns for simplicity + i feel its most suited . the exception is tavros because i have tried to not she/her tavros before and it was difficult and Painful i would never do that to her ... anyway .
[…] My intent was always to make the start date a very significant number in the story, recurring frequently. Consequently, I decided to make him thirteen years old, thus making the story about four thirteen-year-old kids. There are more references to this number than can be mentioned casually, some of which are serendipitous. Playing cards, which have a good deal of relevance later, are comprised of four suits of thirteen cards each, for instance.
(page 1 author commentary)
i wont point out every case of 413 occurring but i will point out cases i find particularly interesting or fun :o) the suit of cards thing isnt something i picked up on at first but thats interesting to know ! on page two john is incorrectly named ' zoosmell pooplord ' . zoosmell being a reference to an older comic ( series of comics ? ) of hussies . i read it to see if theres anything of value i can find in there ; even in the silliest and least plot driven media you can find some sort of significance to an authors later work . maybe an idea , a character archetype , or just the plot structure . zoosmells holds no value at all and is stupid though so
Tumblr media
im not sure if i talk about it much but i do really like how each main characterses room is in homestuck . not only are they typically really good at getting across a characters basic interests but early on with the beta kids they really sold the whole ' webcomic pretending to be a game ( that is actually a game pretending to be a webcomic ) ' thing . the simplicity of it all , the items of interest scattered around in sometimes nonsensical places , even shit like how the walls are drawn just gives the impression of a guy who you can walk around and play as . and you can ! eventually .
Your name is JOHN. As was previously mentioned it is your BIRTHDAY. A number of CAKES are scattered about your room. You have a variety of INTERESTS. You have a passion for REALLY TERRIBLE MOVIES. You like to program computers but you are NOT VERY GOOD AT IT. You have a fondness for PARANORMAL LORE, and are an aspiring AMATEUR MAGICIAN. You also like to play GAMES sometimes. What will you do?
(page 4) time for analysing interests . while characterses interests definitely dont mean NOTHING in the greater scheme of things theyre probably not as important as most other shit . i find them fun to look into , though :o3
really terrible movies - i need to actually watch these , and i plan to ! im not much of a movie guy unfortunately . i dont think theyll be the end all be all of john analysis but i doubt theyll hold NO value . apparently theyre quite shit but i willing watch the big bang theory so i think ill be fine programming computers - john is the ' player character ' in a story that is currently quite programming-joke-heavy . the fact that hes kind of dogshit at it adds to this . guy doesnt know what hes doing yet and neither do you ! simple enough . paranormal lore - johns interest in ghosts is relatively significant but id consider it more ' iconic ' . the guy likes ghostbusters , his tshirt is a knockoff slimer , etc. i think all of the kids have one of these . it doesnt matter much in the greater scheme of things but i think its cool to see what interest a character is sort of built off of even if it gets overshadowed by other shit quickly ameteur magician - im a little lost on this one honestly . it can kind of go hand in hand with pranks i guess ? maybe theres something worth looking into with regards to characters and their relationship with magic . john seems to specifically focus on magic tricks which is opposed to roses interest in Real Fucking Magic . probably not though thats stupid
Tumblr media
on page six is a rare appearence of the cursor . its a remnant from the homestuck beta where every panel was going to be a flash panel . it was ditched for good reason
its also one of the most blatant parts of the video game feel of early homestuck . thats a reader input interacting with a fictional world ! thats all there really is to say on it though i just thought it was neat
Tumblr media
biggest plot twist in fucking history
You stow the SMOKE PELLETS on one of your CAPTCHALOGUE CARDS in your SYLLADEX.
(page 9)
i love sylladexes . johns is obviously based off a stack data structure . john rose and dave all have data structure inspsired moduses which i appreciate but i kind of like the silly ones that come into play later on too !!! like all of jades . unfortunate that they get dropped almost entirely eventually :o(
i should give characters that dont get one them . theyre pretty awesome i think
John: Examine Problem Sleuth Poster.
Tumblr media
PROBLEM SLEUTH MENTION !!!!!!!!!!!
John: Read note on drawer. This note is rich with the aromas of FATHERLY AFTERSHAVES AND COLOGNES.
(page 12)
i made a seperate post awhile back on how dadbert is a sort of symbol of masculinity of fatherhood of manhood etc etc and more specifically how this interacts with reading jeggbert as transfem or otherwise Not A Dude . i still think that holds some decent value
In any case, you now feel like you have gathered enough things to get down to business and do some really important stuff. The next thing you do will probably be exceptionally meaningful. John: Squawk like an imbecile and shit on your desk.
(page 15)
snrk . anyway , since it reminded me : regarding analysis that strongly take timelines into consideration when i look at a lot of homestuck character analysis i see a lot of people try and make a point of ' oh the homestuck characters dont actually HAVE these specific character traits because in ANOTHER TIMELINE they did so and so ' and while i get that , timelines are interesting as a concept and its fun to think about , it doesnt exactly have a place in character analysis . homestuck is ultimately a story and the characters are less like people and moreso tools to tell that story . this is simple shit i am well aware i am not acting like what i am saying is revolutionary but it does lead to people losing the plot a little ( literally lol ) but like .. character a doing something instead of character b or character c sparing character d or whatever blah blah blah . did these all happen ? yeah sure probably . hell you can explore that in an au and ill probably go ' woah , cool ! ' because again its fun to think about . but it doesnt matter .. homestuck tells a story and while it focuses on multiple timelines . just because john took a shit on his desk in one timeline doesnt mean i need to be factoring in ' probably took a shit on his desk at least once ' to how i write him as a character . he would not fucking do that because he does not do that in homestuck . go and write your shit-on-desk-taker!john au but it has no place in canon analysis and you dont really need to think about it all that much
Tumblr media
typheus is a wind god etc etc basic observation . i would really like to read more on the denizens and what gods theyre inspired by but the sources i find are really long and hard to parse .. ill have to look at other peopleses analysis if i want to understand anything i will be honest
on page 25 is the first pesterlog to appear in homestuck , between john and some loser nobody cares about . in a post i unfortunately dont have the link to , said loser is compared to a sort of tutorial character for early homestuck , similarly to johns status as the player character . obviously as homestuck goes on more characters become ' playable ' , as in you see the story through their perspective . but its a pretty neat observation for the early comic !
TG: but who cares about this lets stop talking about it TG: did you get the beta yet EB: no. EB: did you? TG: man i got two copies already [...] TG: why dont you go check your mail maybe its there now EB: alright.
(page 26)
^ classic tutorial conversation . go do your objective !!! your first quest !!!!
[...] The red flippy-lever thing means you have new mail. And that means the beta might be here!
(page 28)
FACT CHECK : this is false === SHITTY ASCII 'BANNER' THAT OF WE ARE DONE HERE ===
anyway it is day two of me working on twenty eight fucking pages and it just hit midnight which means i am going to play miitopia . this is likely going to be one of the shorter posts but i hope i get less rambly as i go on so i can read more than an average of fourteen pages a day jesus fucking christ . Anyway

Since you've earned kind of a reputation as Batgirl 2009 hater (positive), what are your thoughts on Wendy Harris as Proxy? I really, really want to like her and the idea of her being Oracle's protegee, but I kind of disliked how it was set up and then it got derailed completely by the calculator and that completely took over the b-plot with her and Barbara. idk maybe I'm way off base bc I do like Wendy and want her back but I was curious if you had an opinion
It's always a little disorienting being told that I have a reputation, even a minor fandom one. Being Known is such an odd feeling. 😅
Anyway, my thoughts on Wendy mostly agree with yours -- I really want to like the concept. Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog got screwed over in Teen Titans, hard, for the sake of nothing but mean-spirited edgelord shock value bullshit, the exact kind of edgelord shock value bullshit that resulted in the War Games torture scenes and the Killing Joke. So the concept of reclaiming her the same way Babs was reclaimed and making her Oracle's protegee so that the new Batgirl had a dedicated "guy in the chair" while freeing Babs up to go head the Birds of Prey, that's a solid idea.
But the execution sucks, for a lot of the same reasons the rest of Batgirl 09 sucks -- because it's ablest for one, treating both Wendy and Barbara like they're trapped in their wheelchairs and longing for escape, but also because it's ultimately not even really about Wendy learning to overcome her past or even connecting with Babs about their mutual struggles and/or with Steph over their mutually shitty dads. It's about Wendy raging and crying and being miserable until she's finally ~inspired~ by Stephanie's ~amazing badassery~ to get violent revenge on her impossibly eeeeeeeevil insane father and then deciding that being Steph's mission control is her new goal in life because what the hell else is she gonna do.
It just sucks and honestly I hope they ever bring Wendy back it'll be a complete refresh like they did with the Wonder Twins. Just, bring back Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog. Team them up with Snapper Carr as like, the normal human support staff at the Hall of Justice who have to deal with all the craziness that the League puts them through. That'd actually make for a pretty fun slice of life webcomic series now that I think of it.

Asks Compilation 11/12
Tumblr media
I never considered that Aradia could be feeling sincere gratitude towards Equius - that's a good point, and might partially explain her flushed feelings for him. Similarly, I never thought about how difficult and impractical a relationship would be for Equius, given he has this kind of strength paired with this kind of dexterity.
Anyway, I half-agree with your thesis. I can imagine a hypothetical kismesissitude between an older, more mature Equius and Aradia, and I think that relationship could potentially be healthy, for the reasons you describe.
But the one we're getting is doomed from the start - Equius's mind-control shenanigans have pretty much torpedoed the whole thing. I don't think he can have a healthy relationship until he figures out why that was wrong.
Tumblr media
I'll give you a freebie right now - most of the Jojo villains would fit right in with the Felt!
Tumblr media
Yeah, it's not like romantic rivalry is a new idea. Really, the more I think about it, the more I think Hussie's riffing on real relationship tropes with all the quadrants.
Hell, I could probably list some fictional characters that work pretty well as Moirails - and I'm not just talking about The Locked Tomb!
Tumblr media
[ sent when you posted your troll ranking! - C ]
She's the best, she's the worst, and she's destined for great terrible things.
Tumblr media
Sorry Eridan - someone had to nab last place!
Tumblr media
He does have a great design. The cape and scarf work well together - I can see how he'd be easy and fun to cosplay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have two opposing views here, and they both make good arguments. Aristocrats do tend to be egotistical by nature - but Alternia would expect him to act that way, even if it wasn't his natural tendency.
I personally don't think Eridan ever intended to exterminate the land-dwellers, but I'm not sure he ever realized that himself.
Tumblr media
Don't forget Insane Clown Hussie, which is when your webcomic author keeps putting more harlequins in their story.
Tumblr media
Toby, what are you doing back in my ask box? Get outta here, you scamp!
Tumblr media
Ayy!
It's funny, I never considered that many people are reading through the liveblog/chrono/ tag. I'm almost never on my blog's page; I see it through the dashboard!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy belated birthdays, Jade, Dave, and, Rose!
Odd. It really looks like John's birthday should be December 2nd. Maybe something went wrong with his meteor.
Tumblr media
The Newtonverse is a corruption of Homestuck, but Homestuck is already a parody of a million other things. It's one layer too deep, and feels 'wrong' as a result.
Unless Cool and New Webcomic is a similar style of parody, in which case, who knows? Maybe the Newtonverse is simply real, and trying to break into our reality.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that makes sense. She certainly looks like a classic eldritch monster.
I can't see the commentary - I assume because some of it contains spoilers. For comments that don't spoil anything, feel free to send them along.
Tumblr media
It's always very tempting to check out other livebloggers so I can compare and contrast. I won't, though - quite aside from any worries about spoilers, I just don't want to influence my own opinions!
Tumblr media
This has always been a blind spot with me, and it always will be. Try as I might, I will never recognize the difference between Rouge and Rouge.
Tumblr media
I knew the comic had about 8000 pages, but it's good to know it clocks in at 8128.
It annoys me more than it should that it's not 2^13, or 8192. It would have been a nice round number to finish on!
Tumblr media
Thank you, and welcome!
Eridan's beliefs don't really make sense - but it makes sense that they don't. It's bigotry, after all.
He knows trolls like Kanaya, and can clearly see that there's nothing inferior about her - but he can't let go of what he's been taught, so he just doesn't address it, and continues on as normal.
Tumblr media
This comic is damn long, so it's a fun reference to make.
Tumblr media
I'd probably pick one. No special reason - I just sort of vibe with the number, and it's the closest to something kooky like zero, or a negative number.
I would have picked the cueball, but I don't think I want Scratch as a rival...
Tumblr media
Ok, that's fair, actually.
I love how she's trying to 'cull' them.
Tumblr media
It's a good bit. I wonder if this means Hussie's trollsona is a green-blood, like Kanaya?
Tumblr media
Read it!
Tumblr media
It's not intended to! The others all link to the post where the work was recommended to me, but Con Air wasn't recommended - it's just a movie slightly relevant to Homestuck. I have it up there for completeness, and it's underlined for consistency.

the fiorello post
@a-tired-bass asked about my Thoughts on this guy yesterday so i figured i might as well make an entire post about The Trials and Tribulations of Fiorello Operacharacter (who shows up only briefly in the barber of seville and then disappears), The Personality I Decided to Give Him, and then My Silly Attempts At Operatic Matchmaker Because The Composers Are Dead And Cannot Stop Me.
Tumblr media
SO (for those unaware) fiorello is count almaviva's servant who appears at the very start of the barber of seville and then dips like fairly immediately afterward. given the count tasked him with what is a relatively pretty weighty mission (corral the townspeople into helping him woo the girl) and brought fiorello along w/ him to seville in the first place, we can get the sense fiorello is a pretty high-ranking servant, if not the count's head servant. usually, fiorello isn't ever seen or mentioned after the first ten minutes, and his absence carries into the marriage of figaro (which makes sense, as fiorello doesn't exist in the figaro plays and thus wouldn't have been around before rossini's barber of seville premiered).
fiorello's entire appearance is very weird. such a character didn't exist in the original play barber is based on, and there doesn't seem to be a reason for why he'd need to be there and after he leaves, he's never seen again. HOWEVER, if we go look at the original libretto in its entirety, we find that fiorello DOES in fact reappear in a very short, frequently-cut scene! in which he points out how badly his boss treats him and resolves to eventually leave. (this scene is super rare to find and is nearly always cut- although it remains intact in the ponnelle film version, which you can see below at around the 41 minute mark:)
youtube
and THERE'S the character's true purpose: to foreshadow that the count is, in reality, kind of a shitty guy (as we'll come to see in the marriage of figaro) AND to set up the idea that the count will be in need of a new head servant. fiorello is a continuity point for those who had seen mozart's opera, similar to marcellina/berta's aria that sets up the dilemma she eventually faces in marriage of figaro.
outside of this little spot at the top of barber, fiorello has made other occasional appearances in the figaro-verse. he appears in one of the versions of the fanmade figaro play the two figaros (remember the two figaros? well don’t it’s not that good) as one of the count’s other servants. he appears in this one weird loose adaptation of the barber of seville, which gives him a particularly interesting charcater detail: fiorello actively looks down on figaro and resents him until figaro convinces him into allyship:
Tumblr media
then there’s the weird covent garden marriage of figaro from the early 19th century, from back in the day when opera translations were incredibly loose and therefore often changed the plot (this is where we also got the berlin don giovanni where ottavio Fucking Dies and the scandinavian love triangle magic flute i heard about once and never again). among other things the marcellina subplot is erased, barbarina becomes susanna’s rival, antonio gets an aria, and fiorello becomes figaro and susanna’s close friend who helps them stop the count. try this on for bizarro world size:
Tumblr media
over time it seems people have gotten less and less interested in fiorello as a character, and now he’s mostly just a footnote.
anyway, so i took pity on him! and decided to give him a concrete personality.
Tumblr media
i used to write a webcomic based on operas (it was bad LOL it is not seeing the light of day ever again) and i was made to reconsider this guy because he showed up in that for continuity's sake. since then i've had fun figuring out what kind of guy fiorello should be. i decided to make him the 'anti-figaro' of sorts, turning a lot of fig's traits on their head in order to set up what fiorello would be like. (i like the idea of fiorello initially resenting figaro and it being hilariously one-sided on his end, so that carries over here.)
here's what i think he's like. primarily he's a silly little guy. he has a gloriously tacky fashion sense and absolutely would be a dandy if he had the money for that kind of thing, but he doesn't, so instead he just embroiders stuff on his coats. he's very kind and patient, although this often turns into complete naïveté and letting others kind of walk on him. (even though he's nice that doesn't mean he's above pettiness. were he a little more socially aware he would love gossip.) fiorello tends to act as though he cares more about social conventions than he actually does. he's also incredibly genuine- the man cannot tell a lie to save his life. he's an extrovert and always eager to please, if a bit of an attention seeker... which makes him a good servant but also annoying to some.
anyway, after figuring all that out, i thought 'that's funny! he and leporello from don giovanni would get along! and they have similar names and are both basses what if they dated. that would be funny. as a joke. funny.' and then unfortunately i i thought about it hard enough that i ended up liking it unironically and now in my heart of hearts sometime after their respective opera plots they find each other and get together.
Tumblr media
whatever. cringe but free. and that's the story of how i adopted this guy who has like 11 lines in the opera and no friends.

post-school school/career headcanons (non-exhaustive, will make a part two eventually), for your consideration:
nina goes to undergrad for literature with a concentration in creative writing. hasn't picked a medium yet, and regardless it's not like making it in screenwriting is that much easier than traditional publishing, so she writes by night and is an office temp by day (she is aware of the irony of being the "permanent new girl" as a job description. it was funny the first time someone pointed it out. the first time.)
fabian gets a bachelor's in history and immediately goes to grad school for...library/information science. he has to spend a good bit explaining to people that yes, that's a real major, and no, "the books don't start reacting with each other -- a science is a system of ideas, not just when something blows up." he works as a TA and is torn between if he wants to stay in academia or find more "practical" work (this is where i mention this is background work for a story where he goes back to the school to teach <3)
amber might go to a post-secondary fashion school, but even if she does, she's absolutely going for the connections and dropping out the second she gets an industry job, most likely in nyc (which considering how well off she is...probably didn't take long). idk she's thriving (though if she's surrounded by work/kind of by herself socially i could see her getting to a breaking point and claiming she needs roommates to afford rent (lie) just so she can have people around lol)
patricia actually DOES become a guidance counselor. LOL. i can't resist this one -- more specifically, i could see her going to a liberal arts undergrad without a direction in mind but knowing she "needs to figure one out," taking a couple psychology classes, realizing She Cares, declaring a major in psych, and after discounting the clinical track (too close to med school) and the research track (too creepy), she ends up working on an MA in social work
alfie seems like a guy who would have his fingers in like 5 different pies at all times -- depending on who he's talking to/if he feels he needs to impress them, he says one of the following: "business partner" (jerome's business -- more on that later -- alfie's more of an ideas/production guy than a """business guy""" but you don't need to know that if he's telling you this), freelance film crew (prop master/art department), Professional Artist (has a studio where he makes the stuff he uses for his various pursuits), comic author (i feel like he has a weird janky webcomic he makes for himself. i can't explain it. he has a couple thousand readers), etc. he's always picking up a new thing and finding a way to use it until he gets bored and does something else. he just tells his dad "jerome and i are making A Profit" to keep him off his back
speaking of jerome: i've always been fond of the idea that he and his dad go into business together at some point, so it'd be some sort of thing they could do together that alfie's artistic skills would be of use for. despite the fact that jerome very much would like to bend some rules here and there, his dad is not keen on the idea of going back to prison so unfortunately, no white collar crimes for him. (for now.) they're doing well all things considered, but jerome refuses to get a job to fund the business ("what's the point in doing all this if i'm going to let someone else be my boss anyway"), so he's definitely having to find creative ways to squeeze more money out of the business to, y'know. Survive
i'm not 100% settled on this joy idea but communications/PR? definitely gets her start somewhere more corporate, but i could see her getting creeped out by stuff she'd have to spin/help cover for, so she switches to nonprofit (which is also depressing, arguably moreso sometimes, but it's a bit easier to stomach). isn't directly involved in jerome's business, but she does "consult" (not without something in return. preferably, y'know. Money. but sometimes she starts a casual conversation without realizing she should have written up a contract first, and that's the only way that jerome will actually pay you)

I was tagged by @headlesscribler in this post, but like the OP there, I also don't like really long tag game posts. (I do like being tagged in them, though! Thank you for tagging me!)
Last Song: If the song in the background of a video I just watched counts, then it was "Ain't That A Shame" by Fats Domino. But I wasn't watching it for the song, so I don't think it really counts. Last song I listened to on Spotify was "Death by Glamour".
Currently Watching: The Dragon Prince Season 5. One of the rare Netflix shows to get more than 3 seasons. Kinda surprised I don't see more people talking about it here. It's made by Aaron Ehasz, head writer for A:TLA, and it definitely has a lot in common with it: elemental magic system, similar sense of humor, Jack DeSena (Sokka) as a main character, etc.. Plus, it has dragons (in case that wasn't obvious from the title).
Trying to think if there's some other show I'm currently watching, but nothing's coming to mind. But I might finally get into MP100 soon (something I've been telling myself for probably a couple of years now lol).
I think the last movie I watched was Nimona. Highly recommend that one.
Currently Reading: Oh, gosh, I really need to start reading books again so I can stop being embarrassed every time someone asks me something like this. Been meaning to get into The Locked Tomb series on the recommendation of @prodigaldaughteralice (this also counts as me inviting you to do this, if you want), so let's go with that? But that's kinda in the same sense that I've been meaning to watch MP100. It might happen, but the stars must align the right way first.
Current Obsession: Also my OCs. I had this idea back in 2020 for a video game based on the idea of the hero's journey, and then I kinda shelved it until a couple months ago, and now it's basically the main thing I do with my free time. Except now it's probably going to be a multimedia webcomic instead of a video game? Idk, I'm trying to figure out the plot first.
It was never really going to be a video game anyway. I just wanted to use it as inspiration for my music, like a concept album. But now I'm getting back into drawing (I have the opposite problem as @headlesscribler: I've always been more of a writer than an artist), and I've also been learning QGIS so I can make overly detailed maps of my silly little fantasy world. But I'm eternally grateful to @lunathrix for helping me out with this, both with the art and catching the many plot holes I tend to introduce by forgetting what I've already written. (This is also an invitation for you to do this, but again, only if you want.)
I feel like tagging @justarandomart and @junior-classic, but anyone else can join (or not join) if they wish.
