FRUITS BASKET EPISODE 17

So... I knew I had Kyoko feelings... but I didn’t know how MANY Kyoko feelings I had. Man. Between this anime and ‘Pose’, I dunno if I’ll have any tears left

I love this because I think a lot of people in the anime (and some fellow audience members) see Tohru and think that she’s a pushover and/or weak when that is not the case at ALL! She loves people - all kinds! And she will go beyond and try to protect them through whatever actions are needed (to the extent that she’ll surprise even herself; e.g. when she pushed Akito away from Yuki). And yeah, she’s not the most aggressive or physically strong person but I think this anime is very good at displaying different impactful ways in how you can save someone. Sometimes it’s not always a fiery battle, sometimes it’s just taking someone’s hand and running away with them.

Kyokoooo <3 Outfit appreciation goes to her this week cos I like her jacket. Just gonna slide that into my Autumn 2019 lookbook. 2 out of 5 stars.

Look, I love romantic shipping as much as the next fangirl but there’s something about the early stages of a blossoming friendship that I identify SO HARD with. It’s just... so nice. Romance is cool and everything but the early stages of a friendship paired with the worry that the other person might not feel that same want to be friends is something that I feel like we don’t often see often on screen (and even less when it involves men or between opposing genders) and yet it happens so often to a lot of us!

I could go into how friendship is devalued as you grow older but then I really would be going off track...

Friendship is magic, guys.

Oh, Uo... SHE’S JUST A CHILD. I think this is the first time during these flashbacks in the two episodes that Uo has been presented EXPLICITLY as a middle school child and it IS terrifying.

Kyoko is such a goddamn badass! No wonder everyone in this anime is obsessed with her.

Wow. Uotani’s english VA really got me here. Kudos to Elizabeth Maxwell. I should just start collecting the tears I shed for this anime and see how far I go.

Hahaha! I love these little comments from Kyo through this anime (this and his comment to Haru in an earlier episode where he told him to go easy on the class president as he ‘clearly wasn’t trained’). It just makes it so much more clearer that Kyo REALLY IS passionate about martial arts and knows his shit. Which is something that I didn’t really get from the 2001 anime - it appeared more so as a hobby for him there?

- I wish we got more story about the relationship between Uo and her dad. It’s clear her dad is still struggling with alcoholism but was it his decision to clean up for himself and his daughter or is it something Uo has literally had to monitor him to keep away from? Because it really is looking like it’s the latter... and I’m not sure I like that... at all. Uo needs a parent! While this whole story arc was mainly about Uo needing and wanting people to care about who will also reciprocate that care back to her, I also think she just wanted a parent who is present. Throughout this story, Uo is constantly putting herself in adult situations and I just want her to have a place again in which she can be a kid and have someone look after her... (*mind flashes forward to a new character that’ll be introduced in Uo’s life and suddenly I’m looking at that relationship a bit sideways*) A DISCUSSION FOR ANOTHER DAY, PERHAPS

- Haha! I knew those girls would end up falling in love with Uo. I still want them to form a girl gang with Momiji though.

This was a nice end to the two episode arc. Phew, we’re really getting closer and closer to the end of this season, aren’t we? I’m still not ready for end. But I’m still hoping we get a nice three episode arc for... THAT arc. (Lol, nice wasn’t the right word) See you next weeeek!
