in Dragon Slippers, Creel’s whole thing that puts her in demand with customers and an asset to the dress shop is that her embroidery is inspired by stained glass, with color blocks and pictoral scenes, rather than more typical borders and small motifs. but like
filling in an area takes more thread than bordering it- kind of obvious, but in a pre-industrial society that’s gonna add up quick. It also takes more time. Just for sheer skill + materials + time, the dresses she makes should be notably expensive even among the category of court/ballgowns.
Plus she’s, y’know. Good at it. And I feel the books do not properly hammer home??? That “giving her her own dress shop” at the end of the first book should by all rights launch her to fabulous wealth. The implication is that if not for the whole “falling in love with and marrying a prince” thing she’d be solidly middle to upper middle class. But based on demand, clientele, and the amount of labor that goes into her work, girl should be richer than Croesus within 5 years.
