listened to three episodes of mabel (the podcast) yesterday. SO good, holy shit. i’ve been meaning to listen for years and i get it immediately. just the first episode was so good. turns out i’m not actually that hard to get into podcasts i just haven’t been finding the right ones…

what is penumbra about?? why does everyone love juno what happens why dont u like it RAGGHHH i hear so much abt it but it all means nothing to me. would u recommend it????

the penumbra podcast consists of 2 separate stories that run alongside eachother: the second citadel, a fantasy story and juno steel, a sci fi mystery/detective story. (i don’t remember much ab second citadel it wasn’t my thing) juno is a private eye and most of the episodes consist of his cases. i like juno a lot, he’s kind of a jerk at the beginning and has so much problems and baggage and i like how snarky and grumpy he is. very much enjoyed what i saw of his arc and growth. i do not remember too much of this podcast that’s why i’m not going into the rest of the plot lawl.

i don’t hate the show but it’s really not my thing anymore mostly i can’t get around some of the voice acting and dialogue, the main cast is pretty alright but oh god some of the side chars are hard for me to listen to.. it also has a lot of issues w dialogue volume vs the volume of bg noise/music where it’s like the same volume thus making it hard to make out what characters are saying iirc this issue persists throughout

. idk a lot of small things, and it’s just overall not my thing anymore. it’s got 4 or 5 seasons and i dropped off a few eps into s3, just a gradual loss of interest. i am not going to recommend it to anyone but again i’ve listened to only half the show 3 years ago so im not the one to do so anyway

about the rad bouquet: yeah it's canon! and i love them so much <3

if you decide to start listening to the penumbra podcast, just know that it's separated in two completely independent main stories: juno steel (or the junoverse), which is the most popular i would say (regrettably), and was at first intersected with one-off stories, and tales of the second citadel, which only starts in late season 1 (and is the story containing the rad bouquet)

the junoverse and the second citadel being completely independent, you can choose only to listen to one or the other (say, if you want to get to the polyam faster :P), but both are great!

(anyway now that i've gotten the facts that you probably already knew out of the way, tell me if you want me to ramble on about the rad bouquet because i absolutely will, i don't get enough chance to gush)

not to make an incredibly niche post at noon on a thursday but im thinking about dean getting some free time in the bunker and remembering the time claire called him old for not knowing what a “podcast” was and anyway, he IS looking for something else that could take his mind off the world for a bit like old wild west flicks or his secret very well hidden dice set do. and so he opens up “spotify” and searches for a while and eventually he sees “noir detective” and “outer space” and “mars” in the description and figures hell, he’ll give “the penumbra podcast” a shot. and wow, he starts it while working on baby in the garage, wow this juno steel character seems cool! he’s gruff and tough and drinks too much and he solves crimes in a broken city that can never be fixed - whats not to love, right? and then an hour into it his emotional support “manly” detective is kissing another man. and dean drops the fucking wrench. because that’s not whats supposed to happen. and he rewinds and listens again because he must have misheard, but there it is. private eye juno steel, who can drink whiskey and kiss a man and shoot a gun and kiss a man. and dean- he just takes a moment to breathe. takes a moment to make sure no one else is around, figures baby needs more work and it’s already on so he might as well keep listening, for convenience sake, he tells himself. he presses play and goes back to work. but then when juno calls himself a lady before he shoots a gun and makes his daring hero escape, dean just has to sit down because an old buried ghost of a feeling is welling up in his chest and he keeps listening well into the night just sitting on the garage floor and he hears juno steel kiss men and women and save hyperion city and be a lady and forgive himself for the angry parts of his mom he carries with him, the angry mom who haunts him

i just think that wouldve been very formative for him

If you’re into horror, like tma:

Alice Isn’t Dead- By Night Vale Presents so you know it’s good. Anxious lesbian trucker takes off around the country looking for her missing wife, accidentally gets wrapped up in spooky supernatural stuff. Also has some pretty interesting commentary on America and society as a whole. Actually has a happy ending, so that’s a plus!

Old Gods of Appalachia- Horror anthology podcast that focuses on the eldritch happenings that go on in old Southern mining towns, in the 19th & 20th century. Very aesthetically pleasing. Each season so far has an arc about a specific town, and a second arc about this immortal asexual witch and her enormous pet bear. It’s good shit.

King Falls AM- I’m not very far into this one, but you’ve probably heard of it. Your local small town is known for being haunted, radio station reports all the spooky happenings. It’s funny, and pretty lighthearted (at least so far.) A good podcast to wind down to.

If you’re into sci-fi: (most of the podcasts I listened to are spacey and they’re all SO GOOD)

The Penumbra Podcast- Yeah after tma this is probably the most well known podcast out there. I won’t say much except that it’s SO SO GOOD and you should definitely check it out. You can either listen to a private investigator on Mars solve dangerous cases, fall in love, and work through his extensive childhoood trauma OR listen to a bunch of dumbass knights in a medieval citadel fight monsters and learn that maybe they shouldn’t be fighting monsters. Everyone is queer. It’s a fantastic ride either way.

Wolf 359- oh my god oh my god this goddamn podcast. I can’t even. I can’t. Ahhhhh anyway so a four-person crew on a space station orbiting a red dwarf star are searching for signs of alien life, and they possibly end up stumbling on an alien race, while also discovering that the company that sent them up there *might* not have humanity’s best interest at heart. Has found family galore, valuable lessons about personhood, and just overall so much good stuff. Starts out as a comedy but gets intense pretty fast. WILL rip your heart out.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris- Honestly in terms of number of relistens... this might be my favorite podcast ever. It’s definitely up there. Only has one season right now and only ten episodes but more is coming and I can’t wait. Your local gay space smugglers accidentally get caught up in a massive government conspiracy and try to stay alive while unraveling the mysteries behind a past intergalactic war, trying to bring down said oppressive government, and being as useless and gay as possible. It’s just. A lot of fun. TRUST me.

EOS 10- It’s uhh basically a sitcom about a team of doctors on a space station? At least it starts out that way. There’s a pretty big shift in tone after season two, it’s goofy, & the plot’s kinda all over the place but who CARES because it’s friggin hilarious. Half the time I have no clue what’s going on but it’s still really enjoyable.

Girl in Space- The name says it all, really! A scientist clone is living on her spaceship all alone doing her research and is perfectly content...until a huge fleet of ships turns up on her doorstep claiming she’s now their company’s property. Her life now consists of imprisonment, mutinies, and giving lectures about human rights to the company’s employees. It’s got science, it’s got Jurassic Park references, it’s got sentient stars! What more could you ask for.

If you’re into more modern fantasy:

The Bright Sessions- A group of people called ‘atypicals’ have special abilities that are, essentially, superpowers. And what do they do? They go to therapy!! It’s all well and good until they find out that their mysterious therapist may or may not plan to use them & their powers to rescue her brother who’s being held captive in an evil agency. Whoops. Anyway it’s got lots of lovable characters, adorable romances, and emotional moments that make you want to sob. It’s great.

The Far Meridian- A girl with severe agoraphobia lives in a lighthouse with her brother, until one day he disappears. Shortly after, her lighthouse starts moving somewhere different every day, and she travels the world searching for her brother. This is just a really nice podcast. It’s about memories and friendship and finding magic in little things and it’s just...beautiful tbh. And sad. Beautiful and sad.

alex im thinking of listening to some of the podcasts that u like so i can relate to you again, what do u recommend

okay babe so i’m probably the worst person to ask for podcast recs because (despite being a podcast blog) i have listened to like three podcasts in my life and two of them are horror but here goes i guess (under the cut because it got long)

The Magnus Archives: this one’s obviously the first. Horror + tragedy but really its just a workplace comedy but not really. The Magnus Archives follows Jonathan Sims, The Head Archivist as he tries to get the archives in order while not knowing anything about archiving while trying to figure out what happened to the previous archivist while also trying to stop the apocalypse(s). Currently running (Season 5). Episodes every Thursday. Check the triggers for each episode before you listen. Very Gay. Critically Acclaimed. 10/10

The writing is insanely good. A Lot of lore to keep up with. current favourite podcast. I am emotionally attached to so many characters. Definitely listen to this if you can stomach horror and weird sfx (including but not limited to: worm noises, Man Attempts To Chop His Finger Off And Fails Repeatedly ASMR, and [extended sounds of brutal pipe murder] but NO kissing noises). Took me 16 days to complete but then again i didn’t have anything better to do.

Welcome To Night Vale: this one was my gateway podcast. episode one changed my life. kind of existential/cosmic horror but also a comedy. Told in the form of community radio broadcasts, it follows the daily happenings in the town of Night Vale, a high-key fucked up place, narrated by the omniscient radio host Cecil Palmer. Currently running. Bi-monthly (episodes every 1st and 15th). VERY Gay. 9/10

The writing is pretty deep. Fun to listen to at the end of a day to unwind. Not really horror horror, but wtnv has a special place in my heart.  I honestly could not tell you the timeline if held at knife-point. The weather is always great. Would unhesitatingly die for Khoshekh, Cecil and Carlos. Has several novels (+ a tv show in progress).

Limetown: okay so this was one of my first podcasts. Audio Drama with True Crime vibes (it’s entirely fictional btw). Limetown is a fictional story told as a series of investigative reports by Lia Haddock , a journalist for American Public Radio, detailing the disappearance of over 300 people at a neuroscience research facility in Tennessee. Fun to listen to but it can get a bit loud (as in both loud jump-scares and loud volume). Finished it in one day back in 2018. It was pretty interesting but I don’t recall much. learnt some pretty interesting things from it though :) The music in this was excellent, and i remember thinking the writing was good too.

The Penumbra Podcast: my most recent listen. i LOVED it. made a sideblog for it and everything. Audio Drama. It has two separate storylines: The Juno Steel series (noir detective +sci-fi), in which Juno, a brooding private eye on Mars tangles with an elusive homme fatale etc etc. The second storyline is The Second Citadel (fantasy), in which Sir Caroline must corral a team of emotionally distraught all-male knights to defend their citadel against monsters. It’s a lot more fun than I made it sound just now. Trust me. Currently running (Season 3). Episodes usually every other Tuesday. Super. Fucking. Gay. 10/10

I am emotionally attached to this podcast. It’s my comfort podcast. Joshua Ilon has a great voice, by the way. The writing is incredible. I would say something about how it talks about humanity etc but i can’t because i’ll cry. I kin Juno but that’s irrelevant. I am living for the found family + organised “crime” (is it really crime if it’s against capitalism?) trope in junoverse season 3.

The Black Tapes: one of my first podcasts! Paranormal Horror + Investigative Journalism. Alex Reagan, journalist at Pacific North-West Stories, investigates sceptic Richard Strand’s collection of Black Tapes- records of paranormal encounters he couldn’t disprove. Everything Is Connected TM. someone once said the magnus archives was the black tapes but better and yeah. Completed (? they re-released a bunch of episodes and i think they’re planning on releasing another season). Three Seasons. Not gay. 5/10

i listened to this in 2018 and i thought it was good at the time but it’s kind of. not bad. i guess? the writing was meh but its good background noise. Takes like 15% of your concentration to keep up with what’s going on. It’s fun in that Conspiracy Theories And Chill kind of way. The ending of season 3 was disappointing. Richard Strand kind of vaguely reminds me of mr darcy in that what-part-of-me-insulting-you-to-your-face-did-you-not-understand?-i’m-in-love-with-you way. but i’m playing it up too much. very underwhelming.

Lore: Non-Fiction. 30 minute episodes about dark historical tales, touching on both the macabre and the paranormal. lot of folktales and stuff but also a lot of real historical tales (but only the Fucked Up ones). You can listen to the episodes in any order. Bi-weekly. Currently Running. apparently it has a tv show and book series too. 7/10 but only because it’s excellent background noise + story inspiration.

great for listening while doing other work like math homework, which is what i do. it’s interesting enough and requires like 8% of your concentration to keep up. Aaron Mahnke has a relaxing voice. Would recommend if you spend a lot of time driving or something like that.

Alice Isn’t Dead: made by the same people as wtnv. Mystery + Supernatural Horror + Drama. A series of audio diaries by a truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not!human serial killers, towns lost in time and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman. Completed. Three seasons. has a novel that i did not read. 7.5/10 from what i remember

i never finished this one actually. it’s been on my list since forever but i kind of stopped after season one. all i remember was that it was good. planning on finishing this soon.

so ive been listening to the penumbra podcast

this is a very long and rambly post so bewarned

i just finished the first season and

ohhhh my heart hurts so badly

juno and peter nureyev are IN LOVE but they CANT BE TOGETHER and it HURTS SO BAD

all while juno was narrating about how much he wanted to go off w peter nureyev i was just waiting for the moment when he said "but i cant" and it was SOUL CRUSHING when he did even though i KNEW he couldnt because his life is on mars man and hes so tied to his city and i just knew he wouldnt be able to leave but GOD it hurt

and hearing peters little "juno-" as he left was devastating

and im so so afraid that peter nureyev doesnt come back because he said he wouldnt come back to mars and

i just already miss him so so much and im so scared he wont come back :(

it feels like all my organs have been removed individually, blended up and poured back into my body

anyway- great show! highly recommend. :)

but its not all bad emotions- not at all

i love all the characters so much and juno steel is just so coooolllll

but even though he is Very Cool i can kinda tell under that hes just a little bit of a loser (i still love him though)

ive always loved detective stories and cop shows and stuff like that so i just love him so much

and hes always got a one liner for every situation and hes just so so sassy and i love him

have i mentioned i love him

and its just the COOLEST THING that he LIVES ON MARS

like!!!!! hes just out there!!!!!! in space!!!!

and i could listen to him talk about his city for hours man

when he talks about it i can feel everything ukno? its a little bit rough around the edges but it feels like home when he talks about it

like i can see the red sand and the floating mansions and feel the heat and the air and the culture and the way he talks about it id wanna protect it too ukno?

thats really cheezy now im writing it down but GOSH its the emotion i feel

and peter nureyev is also Very Cool but a little more fluid about it

like with juno it feels like his charisma is learned but with peter nureyev it feels like he was born with it

it seems like itd be very difficult to feel so authentic while living several different lies at once but MAN this dude pulls it off

and in my head hes got a bit of that wacky cecil palmer fashion but quite a bit more understated

it doesnt make sense with his job but it just makes me happy

my favorite story so far was the train from nowhere

its sooooooo cooooolllllll >^<!!

i just loved all the high stakes jumping around they did and their chemistry is just *CHEFS KISS* exquisite

my favorite part was the poker game because i just LOVE the way they cut together the lines!!

and the music in the background and the frantic narration had me on the EDGE OF MY NONEXISTANT SEAT(i was in bed :/)

like i could SEE the jazzy montage playing out so clearly

thats something i just LOVE about this show-- that somehow it just makes me SEE THINGS

like with tma and wtnv i see all the events in my head but i guess with tpp its the first time the aesthetic has really got me ukno?

like esspecially w train from nowhere bc this might not be completely accurate but in my head when they were playing the card game i imagined it was a biiig room with partially glass walls overlooking a bit of a hill where you could see the sun start to set as the game went on to show the passage of time and theyre in the corner

i might end up drawing it because it just appeared in my mind and i thought it was so so coooolll(even though i made it up but ukno self love and all that) but i dont think id do it justice /:(

anyway i love peter nureyev with my entire heart and i will die a slow painful death if he doesnt come back :)

im also really excited to see where they go with the second citadel

that story didnt really grab me the same way juno did (ive never really been one for fantasy or old timey knights and kings and such) but im still very interested to see what happens

i like the two “knights” and sir caroline is just <33333 and the janus beast is very entertaining

so im excited to see where that goes

“Georgie told me once- before the Unknowing, before… before we really understood the gravity of everything- that I needed people around me, to anchor me, as it were. To talk to- to all of you, but I think she also meant you, Martin, specifically. You were always there to anchor me, to listen to me, even when you were neck-deep in Lukas’s business. Even- even when I didn’t think I deserved it.”

Martin looked down at Jon, met his inscrutable and unwavering gaze. “You always deserved it, Jon,” he said, with all the conviction he had.

[i just ahhhh i think i really nailed jon’s voice through all of this fic but martin’s line here specifically. that’s it. that’s the crux of all of it i think.]

2) from my unfinished juno steel amnesia fic (the penumbra podcast, juno and rita):

“Amnesia?” Juno mumbled, looking at Rita for confirmation. “I lost… two years?”

“I mean, yeah, Mister Steel, if the last thing you remember was the Robertson case that was two years ago. And that means you don’t remember anything about Mister Ex-Mayor Takano-Flaherty or the THEIA’s or Mister Ransom or- OH!! This reminds me of that one stream we watched, Boss, with the guy who had his brain sucked out by aliens only they weren’t aliens they were actually a super secret government agency taking away people’s memories; but oh, no, I guess you can’t remember that either, because we watched that one after the case where that lady’s cat exploded after you lost your eye and you were still all sad about Mister Glass again- we should watch that stream, Boss! Especially now that you don’t remember anything either, even though-”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, back up, Rita,” Juno said, waving his hand vaguely, “what was- any of that, if I’m being honest. Ransom and the mayor? We blew up somebody’s cat?”

“I mean technically, the cat blew itself up, Boss.”

[did i mention that i LOVE rita penumbrapodcast? cause i LOVE her and i love to write her she’s so fun and her dynamic with juno is So fun to write, she just talks and i get to run away on my keyboard and let her say whatever her salmon-crunchie flavored heart desires <3]

3) from my bad kids fantasy au unposted wip (dimension twenty, fabian and adaine and gorgug):

Fabian frowned at Gorgug, considering. “Gorgug, we need to duel more often. If I’m going to be Captain, I need to know all my competition- even if they’re my best friend.”

“Aww,” Gorgug smiled down at Fabian, “I’m your best friend?”

“What?” Fabian blinked in confusion, before noticing Gorgug’s widening smile. “You dick-” he punched Gorgug in the shoulder- “you nearly got me! Of course we’re best friends, Thistlespring-”

“What about me?” Adaine asked, watching her boys’ friendly scuffle.

“You’re my best friend, too,” Gorgug said eagerly, “I can have more than one best friend.”

“Well I have dozens of best friends,” Fabian said, never one to be out done. “But, uh, I suppose you two are the- the top of the list. Of my many friends.”

[i simply think.... they!! their dynamic is SO choice if i do say so myself, i just think that old childhood best friends is one of the Best dynamics out there and is sorely underutilized and i am taking it upon myself to solve that problem. you’re welcome, world]

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

i HAVE to write my fics in chronological order, from start to finish bc there are always scenes that i really Want to write and if i write those first then i have No drive or focus to write the Rest of the fic or the context that goes with it, so i make myself write chronologically and use the scenes that im really excited to write as a goal and a driving force to get myself through the other, equally important scenes, that i’m less excited about, otherwise the fic sits half-finished and abandoned in my wip folder, never to see the light of day......

H: How would you describe your style?

truly i Could Not Tell You. ive been told i write how i talk which. yeah. but idk how true that is for my fic/fiction writing? i truly don’t know tell me about my writing style im begging you i don’t know what my style is i just write its just there

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

there aren’t any specific writers that i draw regular, constant inspo from, really? i’m lucky to know and be friends with multiple incredibly talented authors (you, anna grace, chief among them of course) and sometimes when i read a really good fic or story ill get inspired by the author’s style or tone and work off of that; but those beats of inspiration aren’t super common and tend to just lead to short little spurts of writing, most of my longer ideas and wips are products of plot and character inspiration, drawing from my life or the original media itself and less from fic or other writing (shoutout to @nojoyinmudville and @cauldronoflove both for writing SO good that it made me write fanfiction for THEIR fanfiction sfjvnksjfbd)

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

uhhhhhh not off the top of my head? im a sucker for coffeeshop and bakery aus but they always sort of infuriate me bc you can always tell when theyre written by people who have Never Worked In Food Service nor have they KNOWN anyone who’s worked in food service bc they’re always “im the owner of a very popular, well-trafficked bakery and i’m the owner and also the ONLY EMPLOYEE. I BAKE ALL THE BREAD AND PASTRY MYSELF. AND I RUN THE REGISTER AND THE COUNTER. AND I CLEAN THE WHOLE KITCHEN. AND I DO ALL THE FINANCES AND ORDER FORMS AND LEGAL TAPE. The Adventure Zone

If youre on tumblr youve probably heard of this already. It’s created by the McElroys, and follow the adventures of Taako, Magnus and Merle and a lot of fun other side characters all voiced by Griffin. Its hilarious and full of goofs, but the story it weaves Will make you cry by the end, there are so many plot twists, gays, found family tropes, its just ugh. amazing. very good to listen to if u want a laugh tbh, but the episode are pretty long, up to an hour and a half. but the story is beautiful, the characters are amazing, n i feel like im constantly laughing at jokes i dont even understand bc the mcelroys r Just That Funny. there are also other arcs u can listen to, like amnesty, which is about a trio of monster hunters, commitment, which is about superheros, and dust, which is a western supernatural mystery!

EOS 10

This is for sure one of my favourite podcasts ever. The characters are so easy to love and all so complex with very human issues, except its set in space surrounded by aliens so the shenanigans are never-ending and all so, so entertaining. the general plot is about dr. dalias, a surgeon on the space station EOS 10, and his friends and coworkers dr. urivdian, jane, and levi the hypochondriac, chaotic alien prince (and akmazian, the gay space pirate). the relationships between the characters are to die for, the gays are beautiful, and its fucking hilarious. 10/10 recommend, the episodes are relatively short between 10-15 minutes so its very easy to listen to.

Wolf 359

This was the second podcast I ever listened to, and will forever be held close in my heart. it starts off as a funny, light-hearted podcast based on the logs of communications officer doug eiffel, an astronaut aboard the USS Hephaestus, a spacecraft with only 2 other crewmembers, commander Minkowski and scientist Hilbert. eventually more characters are introduced such as captain lovelace, and the SI-5 crew Jacobi, Kepler, and Maxwell. the series goes from something entertaining and joking to a story with an unfolding plot that honestly blows me away, morally grey characters and the complex relationships between everyone, and amazing character development. the episode start out pretty short but they get longer as the plot progresses. you’ll laugh too many times to count, find yourself crying near the end and wonder how you got here, and fall in love w the characters, the jokes and the mystery. i cant recommend it enough (eiffels development ugh my fucking boy…..)

The Penumbra Podcast

This podcast is so fucking fun. its a detective-noir type storyline set far into the future on mars. it follows PI Juno Steel, a detective in Hyperion City, and all the cases he lands and has to solve. its intriguing as hell, the characters draw you in completely bc theyre so layered and complex but so easy to love, its gay as FUCK (theres only one straight person on mars lol) and its v enjoyable listening to juno’s character development and his interactions with other characters (namely nureyev and rita). im literally never bored listening to this podcast, and if the detective theme wouldn’t typically be your thing i swear you should listen to it anyway because with how its set on mars, in space, in the future, there are things youd never imagine and worldbuilding so smooth and surprising and fun. there are hilarious moments, tragic moments, heartbreaking moments, heart-healing moments, and just. the whole thing is brilliant dude. i adore it. (theres also a lot of mini episodes set in different universes like old western lesbians, and the Second Citadel, which runs alongside juno’s universe and is kind of a knights vs monsters fun thing but theyre also all bisexual lol).

Time Bombs

This is a mini-podcast made by the same creators as wolf 359. its only 3 episodes long so if u want something quick to listen to this is v good! its about a bomb squad on new years eve as Simon Teller tries to break the record of most bombs defused in a year. its very funny, easy to listen to, and just a fun lil thing!

Lake Clarity

Now this boy is a horror podcast. Its about a bunch of teens who go up to the abandoned Camp Clarity for a trip together before they graduate. they uncover abandoned military bases and a conspiracy, mutations and monsters, and get picked off one by one. i admit i never finished the second season but i greatly enjoyed the first! it was interesting (and they acknowledged the slightly basic set up in show a lot lol) but i like it!

King Falls AM

I only recently started listening to this one but its so good dude!! its set in a radio show in King Falls, hosted by Sammy and Ben. Sammy just came to the town from the city and Ben has lived in King Falls his whole life: we listen to the strange events happening around town as they happen and ben and sammy report on them, listen to the residents send in calls about their weird situations, meet new characters, and get a lil freaked out by some spooky things! its funny, its odd, its creepy at times, its the perfect blend of humour, supernatural, and horror!

Welcome To Nightvale

This is one you’ve probably heard of as well. WTNV is a radio show hosted by Cecil Palmer, a citizen of the town of Nightvale, which has got to be the weirdest town in the world. its delightfully strange, entertaining, fun to listen to, and i havent finished it but i like it and i know a TON of other people adore it, its v popular!!

The Magnus Archives

Another horror podcast, I never got very far through it (mainly bc i just. struggle to listen to jon’s voice and accent rip) but the gist of it is a british archivist is going thru some archives n recording the stories. its full of monsters, supernatural stuff n creepy stories. people love it, if ur into horror n creepy stuff then i recommend this one!

The Bright Sessions

Another one I never got very far through, it follows dr. bright, a therapist for the ‘strange and unusual’ and her sessions with various super-powered people, for example empaths, time-travellers, etc etc. im not sure why i didnt get v far thru bc it is v intriguing and has a lot of potential, im sure id pick it back up one day! i think it could have a lot of cool overlapping storylines if u dig that!

Directive

This short podcast is very interesting, its about a man who is on a spacecraft alone looking after people in stasis for many years, and isnt allowed any real contact with other people on the ship outside of a video call once a night. there are plot twists, you will randomly find yourself crying by the end of it bc of the raw emotion, and it can be a little slow in the start but its worth the quick listen!! it goes into the effects of isolation and moral dilemmas on a person and is v interesting!

I don’t have funny things to say about the new year special episode so here’s just a list of things I liked bc god there’s so many

When the episode kicked off straight away with Damien beginning his story with “it happened once, far south from here...” I was like heck yes I’m so ready to kick back n listen bc THIS IS GONNA BE A STORY

I like how the people from the Southern Frosts all have vaguely unintelligible unfriendly European accents this is peak world building

Sir Angelo is such a disaster but he’s like an endearing disaster

You can tell how uncormfortable n alienated he’s feeling though he tries to cover it with his usual bravado and I like to think that he knows how Caroline feels being a foreigner in the second citadel now

Speaking of Caroline I loved her in this ep!!! I always love when Kabert show her softer and more sympathetic side bc the last couple episodes have been ROUGH

When Angelo decided to become Old Cinder and Damien broke the fourth wall and went “..wait wHAT?! That’s TERRIBLE IDEA”. Stellar storytelling.

Old Cinder was such a cool concept!!1!1! Loved how it was described I could picture it so clearly in my head like this is good podcasting ok

ANGELO N CAROLINE FRIENDS NOW! YES THEY ARE U CANT TELL ME OTHERWISE

Like Caroline has a lot more patience for Angelos antics now and Angelo is a lot more accepting of their differences and open to embracing her culture and both of them understand each other and are empathetic toward the other’s challenges love it!!

The whole speech about Old Cider burning up to make way for the new year.,,, I know Damien made a lot of it up but it’s a very good 2019 mindset so 10/10

one of the things i most appreciate about the penumbra podcast is how upfront it is about how angsty things are gonna get. like, with almost every other podcast ive started, i listen to the first couple episodes and think, “sweet, a fairly low-stakes plot and super likable and quirky characters, how adorable and funny, seems pretty fun to listen to, im sure i wont become emotionally invested in THIS one,” and then it turns out there are emotions and a very intense plot and i end up crying. fun. however, the penumbra podcast just started off angsty, right out of the gate, and the real surprise was realizing how quirky and adorable and funny the plot and characters would be. like, i expected that i was going to cry at some point, given juno’s emo intros and the just, like, the music for the second citadel intro. i dont know. the music in and of itself is enough to make me cry. but the podcast has so many genuinely ridiculous and lovable characters and it just kinda takes you by surprise, because this is film noir and high fantasy, right??? isnt everyone supposed to be cool and heroic??? but theyre not, theyre dorks, and its great. i lost track of where i was going with this. ANYWAYS. i just noticed the penumbra does the exact opposite of what ive seen other podcasts do. it developed from somber to lighthearted, even if it still remains largely serious, it has a kind of comic-book-esque humor to it. i just thought that was interesting.
