ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...
the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin
this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.
you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.
also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.

“Not that I’m complaining (quite on the contrary, actually), but you couldn’t have waited for two more minutes until the end of the battle to do that, sir.”
“How could I, with you giving me a smile like that, my dear?”
“...fine. I’ll allow it, this once. Sir.”
“:)”
my second @codywanfirstkissbingo work, for “battleground kiss”

Let's not forget that until this Stede has only had sex with Mary (that we know of) so now he's losing Ed not only the day after they first have sex but the day after he first has sex with anyone he's actually attracted to, not to mention in love with
Like, the man was flying so high and then lost it all (and had his lover call their night a mistake to his face) in under 24 hours, I think it's impossible to overstate how much he's really going through it at the moment

There's something about the way Aziraphale starts to wrap his arms around Crowley- how he touches his shoulders and back- about how he just so clearly didn't want to let Crowley go, but was too afraid to commit to the kiss fully because six thousand years of awkward pining and a romance literally forbidden by Heaven/Hell will do that to you. And then when the kiss ends Aziraphale can't help but sob a little because he knows what choice he made and is making and he knows he chose not to be with Crowley, not the other way around.
He knows that when the kiss ends and Crowley takes a step back that it's over- that they are over. He made a choice and I think he knows he made the wrong one, even if he can't admit it yet. The way he so clearly wanted to hold onto Crowley but didn't- the way he hesitated- says so much.
I am an empty husk of a man.
