I was talking about shipping fandoms rising from the dead so i meant that JM was really popular but was mentioned 100 later and bc it's just a vanilla ship it didn't have the complexity or hardened fanbase to get any popularity back.As for heteros i meant that they'll always be at the top of a shows' overall ship popularity rates because the audience(especially the male one with their self insertion)is conditioned to expect to be pandered with the usual hetero romance like in many other stories
Got it.
I can’t say I have anything to say about jeanmarco. Also because it’s part of my blocklist so like, even if it was revamped, I wouldn’t know.
As for het ships, I understood perfectly what you meant the first time, but I don’t really think het ships are only shipped by the goat people. Besides, now that you bring it up, I think you should be aware that a massive amount of non-het ships are also born out of shippers self-inserting on one of the characters. I don’t think there is much wrong with it. My only gripe with it is when people make one of the characters (often female...or the uke which, what a surprise, often is made to “act like a girl”...mmm) to be some sort of sex object with no personality other than wanting to have sex with the other person(s). No matter the orientation of the ship. I am aware they can still ship it and I don’t intend to police it, it is just a mega turn off for me and pretty offensive.
Anyway, I digress.
There was once a pairing poll (not officially romantic pairing, but we gotta admit people voted for their ship lol) for fire emblem 3houses on a popular magazine in Japan, and both queer and het pairings got in the first places. I don’t feel like there is a disparity overall. It exists, sure, based on what website/demographic you look at because of different type of userbase, just like anything else.
Official sources pander to ALL of the sides, m/f and mlm and wlw, based on how popular they are. Everyone’s reason for shipping something is different, and that’s what good about it. It’s also why I don’t see what’s the benefit of rankings, particularly when they are used to try and invalidate other ships (same with character polls but eh).
It’s no secret that Ereri has dominated over EM in the past (dunno now) and that many ereris (well, rivaeres) self insert on eren and wants to be fucked by levi lol. The pandering to ereri shippers during the years has been COLOSSAL (no pun intended). EM barely got official arts imo, in the early days. I don’t feel like het are favorited by promotional pandering. The only thing the heteros always win is the “race” to canon. Shippers of gay ship have a very VERY low chance of their ship becoming explicitly canon. You know the reasons why. It’s common for PR stunts to pander to queer ships only for the show to, of course, canonize the boring het ship.
So sure, some people ship het because they also have the incentive that there is a high probability that their ship will become canon, esp if it’s a ship btwn main characters, but it’s hardly the only reason as to why het ships are popular.
At the centre of it all, I feel like we are in agreement, I just don’t have such strong opinions as you do XD

Anyway, top-bottom discourse is stupid and damaging
Hey, dudes, so there’s been this sudden (but sadly not new) flux of people attacking others, particularly artists and authors, over using the “ereri” tag when the content is “rivaere” or Levi “topping” Eren.  And to those flux of people, ya’ll are actual idiots and are damaging this shipping fandom.  Badly.
While I understand people have their preferences, there is no reason to attack people for using a tag that has been historically used on tumblr to tag the pairing in various positions or roles.  Yes, the specification of the pairing, like nearly all pairings, are tagged based on topping/bottoming on Japanese run sites like Pixiv or by Asian artists on Twitter.  That’s the way it has been over there for years and for other fandoms and that’s fine to stay.  Except here, on Tumblr, there is different tagging “politics” that caused “Ereri” to be the umbrella term for anything Eren and Levi.  And for good reason.
Tumblr’s tag system has been (and is still, despite the bugs and censorship) used for exposure for different topics.  When it comes to ships, much of the time the ships will have one name.  Ereri in this case is Tumblr’s official name for the ship.  And if you look on a search, even back then, you’d put Ereri, there will be more material than searching up “Rivaere” or “Riren.”  Since the ship has become popular on tumblr, anything Eren and Levi, even if it is platonic or them just existing in a picture together that is absolutely not sexual, has been tagged “Ereri.”  In popularity fandometrics, that is the official name.  So policing people to not use the official name of the ship in Western culture, in this case Tumblr, is rather damaging.  And frankly, quite stupid.
How so?  Well--
First off, the entire debacle of topping/bottoming overall is heteronormative and homophobic.  For a number of people, yes, it’s an aesthetic choice and that’s cool, but a lot of these vicious attacks are laced with a lack of understanding of how malexmale relationships work and really how sexual roles vs personality works.  There are people who of course take natural roles on “subbing” or “domming” based on their consistent nature (whether they feel comfortable being lead or initiating acts), but this is not a rule at all.  First and foremost, making love is about compromise and the idea that one can only top/bottom because of supposed character traits (size, nature, age) is NOT how actual relationships work or should work.  So how is it basically sexist and homophobic to make these claims?  Well, I see a lot of arguments are based on viewing whether a same-sex relationship is equivalent to straight relationships (malexfemale), and often the argument implies one “has to be the woman” and that person is the “sub.”  Ok, I hate to break it to you, but a same sex relationship is a same sex relationship.  In the case of Ereri, malexmale if we are talking their canon genders.  Meaning there is no “woman” involved at all.  Gay relationships have no equivalency to a straight relationship other than the love they share because THEY ARE NOT STRAIGHT!  Moreover, this also implies that in a straight relationship, the woman cannot dom over their male partner.  Uh...that’s obviously completely incorrect.  And the men are not any less “manly” for being dominated by a woman; that’s their preference and their business.
Top/bottom tag separation also implies that Eren and Levi’s relationship in the ship is strictly sexual.  Now it’s fine if people are in it for the smut, but much of the fandom are in it for any representation of love they share that isn’t always sexual.  Sexualizing real world homosexual relationships gives the impression that such relationships are mature-rated and promiscuous and therefore are to be censored, when in fact it is essential for any LGBTQ+ to be normalized so they may be accepted as equals because they should be!  I know these characters are fictional and fictional =/= reality, but the root of the problem actually comes from real world views.  Chances are if this bothers you, you’ve been conditioned by the real world’s homophobic environment to react to things this way.  So....unlearn it.  You should see gay people as real.  Understand this normalization should apply to characters.
Separating the tags diminishes the popularity in the tumblr fandom.  Again, Tumblr uses tags for exposure and they tend to trend the universal tags in fandometric polls.  Ever wonder why, one of the most if not the most popular ships in the fandom, is getting very little exposure than it probably should?  It’s because you are policing people from using the universal “Ereri” tag.  And therefore, it confuses any new shippers that may want to find content but are not getting all they can, because they have no immediate awareness to the stupid war.  In fact, I wouldn’t blame them for not interacting with the fandom anymore once they find out about potential hate thrown around over positions.
Much of the fandom has used the “Ereri” tag as organization for their own blogs that has nothing to do with sexual positions.  This includes platonic relationships.  I’ve been in the fandom since 2013.  All my Eren and Levi reblogs and content are tagged “ereri” even when fandom back in the day had a lot more “rivaere” content than “ereri.”  I don’t plan to stop and have to shift through multiple tags to get any Eren and Levi content over the years.
Artists and authors use the tag for exposure.  That’s how they have always gotten their content out.  Wanna cry about it?  Maybe support your creators more by reblogging the material.  You can cry about how creators should create for themselves, but the primary motivator for creators to continue posting their content is for people to see and spread their work.
And this “debate” quite frankly is embarrassing.  Want to know why no one takes us seriously in the fandom?  Want to know why people treat us like a bunch of “yaoi fangirls” who only wanna see two boys fucking each other?  Yeah, this is one of the reasons and that part of the fandom is to blame.  For fucks sake, I can’t even be properly respected as an meta analyst of the series because of immature homophobic idiots.  Shippers can’t even constructively analyze the relationship in canon because the (universal) Ereri fandom humiliates them and general fandom doesn’t give them a chance because they know about this stupid drama.  It’s bad enough that most shippers are completely overshadowed and overlooked by loud parts of the fandom simply shipping the characters at all, claiming that they know nothing about the series.  You’re just making it worse for those who appreciate the canon aspects of their relationship who want a respectable interaction with non-shippers.
I mean, I have my aesthetic preference too, but I certainly don’t give a flying shit about positions.  They are still the same characters as I analyze them and how I work them from canon, whether they are in an AU or not.  Shouldn’t you just...love them being together?  At all?
Or you could always, like, blacklist the “Ereri” tag and whitelist “Rivaere” and “Riren” so you can narrow your search.  I guarantee you those who prefer “top!Levi” already couple their ereri tag with one of the other two.
Or you can be not ignorant and rage-fitted and, like, get the hell over it?  Chances are you are not having panic attacks over seeing one position over another and if you are you probably should be re-accessing yourself before getting into the fictional shipping scene for your own mental health.
That’s my piece.  Anyone coming at me with hate comments or immature, nonsensical arguments of the above points will likely be blocked.  As someone who aesthetically likes Eren putting his dick in Levi’s ass but otherwise switch or take on the same “role” because they’re like...IN LOVE...and probably don’t give an actual shit about domming or subbing...I don’t even care if those liking top!Eren charge at me, I’m not your ally.  I rather you never see my “top!Eren” content.  So bye now!
