why do baby otohan’s colors look like fuckign TOOTHPASTE in this version 😭😭😭

Was Anyone But You a good Much Ado About Nothing adaptation? No, not at all, but fuck it was fun!

#y’all know I have many thoughts about this play and these characters #but even though the movie didn’t completely live up to my expectations as an adaptation #I still really enjoyed it! #and I really despise all those people making posts about how sydney sweeney can’t act #idk it seems a little rude #my main problem is how they messed up the benedick and beatrice characterization and dynamic #I love that they played up the ex lovers thing (which is left up to interpretation in the play) #and i love love queer Hero and Claudio!!! #but their hatred of each other didn’t really pack the same punch as in the original #I suppose I wish they weren’t afraid to make the characters bigger assholes? #ya know- give them more flaws? #because right now the enemies part doesn’t really feel believable for big parts of the movie #They really could have leaned more into making Bea a bit of a cold and snappy mess (as she is in the original) #and Ben more of…ya know…actual human disaster who can’t commit #both of their characters in the play are driven by their desire never to marry and their distrust for the opposite sex #They included this a bit with Bea (her not believing in true love and all that) #but her break up with Jonathan (because he was too nice???) didn’t really convince me of it #They also keep insisting that Ben is a fuckboy but we never really see it demonstrated? #I personally don’t mind the fact that they changed up the whole ‘convincing them that the other secretly loves them’ bit #especially considering this is only loosely based on much ado #but I do think they made it a bit messy considering they included the gulling scenes but only as a joke #I wish they’d either leaned fully into the much ado plot or ditched it #I think what a lot of adaptations get wrong is that they’re either too afraid of leaning into their og media #or too afraid of seperating themselves from the og media #oh god I’ve reached the tag limit help #anyways- rant over #anyone but you #maria talks about things #much ado about nothing #beatrice x benedick

Ok so she doesn’t have a name yet but I’m thinking of something high class ish. I had an idea earlier but I lost it.

But basically she’s a identical triplet who was born into like. Not a gang but like. Mafia???? Kinda???? Her family fucking sucks basically. But they front the awfulness with a traveling care group, going around and finding vulnerable people and saying they’re gonna “heal” then but really they’re indentured now sorry bud.

Anyways this girl. Middle triplet. Thing is, she actually wants to heal people, and her role in the mafia type thing is that she does the first half of the con, doing enough nursing for the people they take in to be in good enough shape to work off their indentures. Her older sister runs the second half of the con (basically keeps all the indentured in line) and the younger sister does admin, keeping track of debts and who’s doing what and where they’re planning to go etc. Neither of her sisters are particularly nice people, and haven’t caught onto the fact that she wants to do actual medicine and healthcare.

So she starts sneaking people out. But since all she knows is this group and how to hurt people she’s very….she’s an asshole. She doesn’t handle people with much gentleness and expects to be thanked for the rough handling. She definitely has killed people who she couldn’t heal because it was easier than going to her sister (who runs admin, very terrifying woman, think manic pixie dream girl but all the mania is in a locked box) and saying “hey do we have the funds to get equipment for surgery/routine treatment/whatever else”.

But yeah that’s all I got so far

side note about last days: i say it’s detective noir-inspired in the tags. to elaborate, it’s not detective noir—it’s an urban fantasy thriller and for one thing it’s not nearly bleak enough to truly be noir fiction lol. but it is inspired by a lot of the noir tropes i know. it has vibes. class is a thing here. corrupt institutions leave our heroes with few places to turn. our heroes are willing to do some not-so-morally-upright things for their ultimate goals. it’s set in a dirty city filled with dirty secrets. but largely, i think, i’ve taken from my favorite piece of noir writing advice i’ve ever seen: “you need a dame with a past and a man with no future”. pearl is probably the single most detective-noir inspired character here; she’s not a femme fatale, sure, but a dame with a past…?

anyway make of this whatever you will fic’s not done yet and as i said it’s merely inspired by noir i wouldn’t even begin to claim that’s the genre it’s actually in. like I said. urban fantasy thriller/detective story thats a bit too bright and fun for that, and with protagonists who are probably way too likable and have a bit too much hope to be noir protagonists, lol. just wanted to elaborate a little bit about that one tag,
